  • I’m telling you guys - - Baylor is LEGIT I’m not to proud to admit that , it’s ok they representing the big 12 - -hell ya

  • @BeddieKU23 replace Self with Beard etc

  • @BShark self > beard

  • @rockchalkwyo my stance is that Beard needs to prove it long term.

  • ok go ahead and STILL not give Baylor any love. - I’m telling you this team is a solid legit Championship contender. - -love their defense - -got really good guard play. - -Tied for best start in School history, yet I’m still sure there is gonna be people, who no way want to give Baylor any props. - -It’s ok to admit that yes there are OTHER teams that do have really good teams – Baylor is one of those teams

  • @jayballer73 Yeah. I had the same thought as I watched them totally dismantle Florida.

I suspect some of the skepticism on the board is that the coach this year is the same one as in previous years. Therefore results are expected to be the same.

  • @bskeet Agree. In the past, Baylor has had teams that could beat anyone (and they often did) but could always lose to anyone (and they always did). This team seems different. I’m with @jayballer73 . Great defensively and they can shoot. Right now they are better than us.

  • I thought the Big 12 showed pretty well. KSU and UT with comebacks that fell a little short. Of course, they weren’t impressive to fall behind like that. OU and OSU winning were a little surprising to me.

  • Also,…did anyone catch the crude gesture by the Florida drummer? It was quick but noticeable. When they were showing the guitar player. All I could think of was…man if that were my kid…I must be old.

  • @BShark

I like beard, his players just crapped the bed big time.

I have no idea who could replace Bill and I rarely chime in when this comes up every month it seems now. I know who I don’t want and that list is way longer then those who I think could

    Tech is terrible

Tech isn’t terrible, they’re inexperienced and haven’t learned how to finish close games yet. They really only have 1 bad loss on the season to DePaul, all the rest are reasonable losses. I think I heard during their game yesterday that they have 9 new players on the roster this season. To have that many new faces at a program like Tech and to be ranked for most of the season is a good accomplishment. With the inconsistency of most programs this year, if they could pick up a win over WVU on Monday and/or KU in either match up, get to 10-8 in league play, and reach the B12 semis, Tech will be back in the NCAA tournament. I don’t think a lot of people realize just how difficult that job is. Lubbock is in the middle of nowhere which hurts recruiting efforts, and they’re usually the afterthought program of the major conference Texas schools.

Beard is doing a very good job with that program and if he stays long term (that’s going to be the biggest hurdle for Tech), he’ll have them as a consistent challenger to KU.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

The comment was heat of the moment as I watched Moretti and another freshman miss critical free throws. I understand he has a young team and I expect KU will have trouble beating them coming up. They should have won that game last night

That’s part of the growing up process for an inexperienced team though. That’s the next step in the growth of that group is learning how to finish out close games against good teams. They’re a good defensive team, probably 3rd best on the league behind KU and Baylor so I think they’ll get there by the end of the season. I could easily see them knock off KU in Lubbock to close out the regular season.

  • Beard took TT to within a play or two of a National Championship, not KU, UNC, Duke or UK with all the advantages of a blue blood.

There is no better choice as your coach for the next 15 years than Beard.

  • This is the first time Beard has made it beyond year two at a job in this his fourth hc job. He might be Larry Brown adjacent.

He is a fine coach but he is 12-7 right now. If Bill ever started 12-7 here I don’t even know but it would be cataclysmic on the forums and twitter.

Bruce Weber did this too at Illinois… Shaka had a FF run at VCU.

Just pointing out that a tournament run doesn’t necessarily dictate future success. Sometimes I think some of these guys do better at smaller schools with less turnover and getting to a blue blood is an entirely different animal. This is a rare time KU has a starting 5 that was all on the roster a year ago. And even at that, our 6th, 7th and 8th guys off the bench weren’t.

Beard has massive turnover the first time in his career and he’s probably going to finish outside the top 25 this season. He will lose two of his starters after this season too.

If next seasons Tech team isn’t top 25, are you going to be saying the same thing?

  • @Kcmatt7 hell all Liberace has to do to get back to a ff at ksu was beat Loyola. Bruce is probably above average at xs and os but it just goes to show ffs can be fairly random.

  • @BShark How many coaches got to the final game that you would say to be random in the last two decades? Weber had Self’s players. Beyond that?

  • HighEliteMajor said:

UConn twice including once with Kevin Ollie (who proceeded to flame out). Shaka, the Loyola coach, Frank Martin, Lon Kruger, Greggggg, Huggins.

That’s going back 10 years. 8 in 10 years so usually about one a year. I almost wanted to include Gonzaga too since they flame out so much.

You would have thought Kevin Ollie was easily the next big thing too.

  • @Kcmatt7 Nah, I see building what he did at TT as much different from taking over a national power that had won multiple NC’s in the previous, what, 12 or 13 seasons (before Ollie took over) as just a touch different. I know, this is opinion stuff. But I just see a lot in Beard that I like. Everything, actually. Best in game coach I saw last season.

@BShark When you say flame out, I agree on Shaka and Ollie. I don’t think the others flamed out. Huggins is a hall of fame guy, Kruger likely will be, Martin not bad, Greggg has had a program that is better than any other Big 12 program (aside from KU) during his tenure, Gonzaga too, and Loyola was Cinderella. Like a George Mason. Shaka and Ollie are the best examples of flame outs I think.

If anyone was betting on a coach not named Self, at KU, only a few are in the conversation I’d think. Beard clearly one.

  • My top 5 Self replacements if the extremely unlikely happened and we needed to replace him next year (no order): Jay Wright, Mike White, Chris Beard, Mark Few, Tony Bennett

  • I am a huge fan of Beard but anyone that watched the end of the Kentucky game in regulation and OT could not come away impressed at all with what he did. I was in shock at how awful Tech executed down the stretch often times coming out of timeouts.

  • I didn’t mean that they all flamed out just that they were flukey. I don’t think Beard will totally fade but I wouldn’t tag him as the top coaching candidate either.

  • @Woodrow That last ridiculous drive by Moretti reminded me of 2013 vs Michigan with EJ’s wacky drive way out to the right of the lane followed by the desperate heave out to 24-ft-from-the-rim Tharpe.

  • @Woodrow

Did you take the end of that game and OT as anything Beard did wrong? His 90% FT shooter missed badly on the first to win it in regulation. Then a freshman went to the line and missed the first being a 60% shooter in OT I believe it was. I think the difference in the game was missed free throws and not having anyone big enough to match Richards inside. He had a monster game against them

  • @BShark

He is recruiting well at Tech. Culver & Smith just completely blew up as under the radar guys, Moore (flamed out and transferred but Top 50 kid), Ramsey was Top 25 kid from this past class. He got an All American this year who looks really solid. Moretti was a Euro, Edwards was underrated IMO. I think as far as High School recruiting goes he’s doing a lot of similar things as Self, recruiting Top talent, getting underrated kids and developing.

He hits the transfer market hard and got two studs in Mooney/Owens who were integral pieces last season. Clarke/Holyfield haven’t had the impact those did last year but they have been key pieces to the young squad he has.

I know he hasn’t proven himself beyond the last 2 seasons but an Elite 8 and losing the Championship in OT certainly build cred quickly. I think he’s a good character coach from what he says to the media and he’s young enough (10 years younger then Self) to think he could continue the elite level play we’ve had.

It’s a tall order but the other 2 coaches I’d put in the want bracket- Wright & Few are older and have really shown no interest in leaving their current gigs.

  • BShark said:

Yea I need to see at least next season before I’m sold on him I think. This is the first year he’s had his own guys and they are 12-7 with 4 games left against KU, Baylor and WVU.

And then they have road games against everyone else in the league except KSU and TCU.

Kenpom is projecting they finish 18-13.

To put it in a little perspective, Bill Self hasn’t lost 13 games since 1995 at Oral Roberts.

He hasn’t lost 12 games since 1998 in his first year at Tulsa. And since then, he has never lost more than 10 games in a season.

I’m not going to absolutely crush Beard over this season. But if next year he doesn’t bounce back with a team ready to compete for the league title I’ll be skeptical that he’s the guy. He will have back to back Top 15 recruiting classes and that should be plenty of talent to challenge or beat KU in the B12.

  • The reason I’m so big on Tony Bennett, he’s finished the season ranked the past 6 seasons. This might be the first year he hasn’t in the past 7. And 5 of those seasons he finished Top 6.

So he’s won consistently through multiple recruiting classes and not just been a good team. He’s had arguably one of the best 6 teams the past 7 consecutive years. And he’s proven he can win the big one.

AND he’s now proven he can win no matter where. He’s done it at two P5 schools, neither of whom were a basketball powerhouse before he got there.

You can say Virginia basketball is boring, and I’d agree with you. But you can’t say it doesn’t win.

  • @BeddieKU23 I didn’t see anything that resembled a well ran offensive set at the end of that game and OT.

Watching Self out of timeouts and then end of that game on both sides really is night and day.

I like Beard and think he is awesome, I just didn’t see anything in that game from him at the end.

  • @Kcmatt7

He definitely can win. Personally I’m just not on his bandwagon but I recognize he is a great coach. I recognize K, Cal, Huggins, etc as great coaches but they are not the guys I would pick to lead KU post Self whenever that comes.

But I can see the appeal from a stability, winning, defensive minded coach

  • @Woodrow

If I remember correctly guys didnt make plays and I thought Kentucky’s athletic bodies bothered them at the end. I agree there are very few coaches better then Self, if any in certain situations but I thought his players kind of showed their immaturity in that one. Ramsey was non existent that last part and Moretti tried too much to make a play which I dont think is his calling card either. That was a young team that just didnt finish. But I can see how anyone who watched might think otherwise. That was a game Tech shouldn’t have lost

Still just would not want that here - -it’s just to dam boring, kind of like watching the grass grow, and if he gets behind - - forget about it, his teams are just not designed enough to come from behind , causes them to get out of their comfort zone and becomes helter skelter - sorry I understand what you say – just not for me

  • Chris Beard has put fringe recruits in the lottery and has taken Texas Tech to the Finals. I thought Lubbock was a bball wasteland when Knight was there. Not so. Beard’s recruited talent, developed it and has his student body juiced for big games. He’s a young basketball 46. Last year he beat Self by 29, 25 at halftime, easily handing Self his worst ever conference loss. Self himself was 40 when he came here (?) and had made only 2 E8s.

Beard would be a grand slam hire, imo.

good thing we don’t have to worry about who is replacing him

  • The rest of the Big-12 plays tonight

Biggest game of the night: West Virginia at Texas Tech. If Tech holds serve that would put Huggy Bear 2 & 3 games behind Baylor/KU.

Baylor is at Hilton Tragic. They (ISU) tried hard to beat Auburn but came up short. Last two home games they have averaged 85 points. I highly doubt they can hang close to that on Baylor. Bolton is coming off 2 straight 20 point games, Halliburton is still not playing 100% I think. Hilton will need to bring the Magic for once this season.

hmmmm , do I dare go out on a limb ? – man I dunno. -probably really stupid , but what the hell here I go. - - I say Hilton Magic - -this is the ONE game this year that just something magical happens tonight at Hilton – long – long - -long shot I know but hey I don’t have any money riding on it SO - - BOO K IT - -run to your bookies and place your bets lmao. – ROCK CHALKALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Kind of surprised to see that Baylor is only a 4 point favorite tonight in Ames. Vegas thinks it will be a close game.

  • @Woodrow Vegas had Florida winning. Maybe they undervalue Baylor based on the past.

  • KU women trailing KSU 24-22 at halftime. Pretty ugly game to watch…both teams shooting under 35 pct from the field. Refs calling it pretty tight, maybe remembering what happened in the men’s game last week.

  • All of a sudden, both teams have found their offense. KU trails K-State 48-45 after 3 quarters. Lotsa threes falling, and more points scored in the last quarter than in the first two combined. Hawks still having trouble going inside against KSU’s bigs.

  • Boy Iowa St is really a - - - -BAD TEAM - - -A BAD , BAD , TEAM.

I am still not that impressed by Haliburton , UGLY shot - -I mean Ugly, I have yet to see him really take charge, just does not impress me , of course could be that Iowa State is soo bad , no matter how good Haliburton still makes it hard to see.

I don’t know how many times Baylor just toyed with them - -Every time Iowa State score and you think - -just need a stop , Baylor right down the lane for a lay up or little 3-5 foot jumper or IF they miss ANOTHER offensive rebound Iowa state is just a mess

  • KU shooting goes cold in the last quarter. K-State wins 69-61.

Jayhawk women now 1 and 7 in the Big XII after starting 12-0 in non-con.

  • Yep Baylor dominated Hilton Tragic.

Texas Tech hung 89 on West Virginia’s defense in a win. West Virginia now has 3 conference losses.

Texas beat TCU on the road by 1.

OU was beat by K-St in Manhattan (Lon’s group is not good).

  • @BeddieKU23 didn’t tcu beat TT last week?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 12-3 feasting on cupcakes; 1-4 since.

  • @dylans The Bruce/Snyder special. TCU has been low key great at this as well the last several years. I’m kind of surprised TCU hasn’t been better with Dixon. I guess he is just a middle of the conference coach. He seems almost locked in there.

Key injuries and athletic underperformers. I still think he can turn it around.

  • Is Beard’s success at TT cutting into TCU recruitment?
