John Belein to the Cavs

  • Defensive effort at the college level is lower, just that they can consistently get bailed out by guys that simply cannot make plays.

If you watched the games yesterday, there were times where the defense had to rotate to the third or fourth pass after help. In college, it is unusual to have to rotate that much because the ball eventually goes to a guy that either can’t pass, can’t score, or can’t do either, forcing the offense to have to reset. When the ball goes from Simmons to Embiid to Butler to Redick to Embiid again, you have to make every rotation there because every guy can hurt you. If the ball goes Lawson to Dotson to Garrett, the chain ends at Garrett because you don’t have to close out to the non-shooter.

And on this NBA thread … I watched the 4th quarter of the Philly/Toronto game. Amazing defense by the Raptors down the stretch.

But the difference is that the effort on defense is given night in, night out in CBB. Not in the NBA. But what I saw last night was a clinic. Shows what they can do max effort. Philly could barely get a partial look at the hoop.

82 games playing 3 to 4 night per week, players have to pace themselves. Teams that play in the NBA Finals are typically over 100 games at that point. The human body can’t handle playing at the level they play at in the playoffs every game otherwise players would get injured more frequently due to lack of recovery time.

So, I’m wondering, is this your opinion wherein you are mistakenly appearing to state it as fact, or you actually believing that your opinion is fact?

@justanotherfan That may be the first time I’ve heard it stated that they give more effort on D in the NBA. Now, playoff time, it’s very impressive. Regular season, not so much …

  • @HighEliteMajor Basic human physiology tells me that. Same reason why runners in marathons don’t sprint the entire race. When someone pushes their body too hard for too long without adequate recovery time, they become much more likely to suffer an injury.

Most players know how to take plays off on a game to not fatigue themselves early in a game without negatively impacting their team. Little stuff like guarding the last option on offense or standing on the perimeter as a decoy are 2 very common ways players get quick little breathers in a game without negatively impacting their team on the floor and without having to be subbed out.

Players who aren’t good at that frequently come across as lazy on the court.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 So, it’s your opinion presented as fact. And then, again presented as fact. You know, because basic human physiology tells you.

Then your second paragraph backtracks as the discussion is whether NBA teams play defense as intensely as CBB teams, as opposed to taking plays off that don’t negatively impact a team. Two different topics. Your second paragraph identifies things that CBB players surely do as well.

I very much appreciate the education.

Amazing, a 28 year old man in peak condition, can’t play hard on defense, because, as a high level athlete, to do so three times a week would be too trying on their bodies, I mean, with no real full speed work in practice, timeouts, bench time, days off, etc.

I mean, geez Wally, it’s basic human physiology.

And if you really want to know why a team like GS wins so much… it’s because that team knows when to let off the gas. They have probably the best confidence of any team in the league for a long, long time. They know they can make up 10 points easily within a minute or so, and they will. So they take gaps of time off. And they often do it by having one player, like a Curry, play a little “ball hog” and let the other guys blow air.

And GS is a team that runs tons of depth throughout the season. They are a bit short now because of Durant and Cousins… Kerr is underrated.

I suggest to everyone in here… at some time in your life, attend a NBA game and get as close to courtside as possible. Same can be said of a NFL game, if you are fortunate enough to be able to ever get on a sideline.

Moving that much mass at that speed… it’s breathtaking to experience live and you will never “get it” unless you are there… live!

  • I’ll never forget that loss to Belein and the Wolverines… that’s right up there with losing to Arizona in the E8 in 97, the championship game loss to Syracuse, and the VCU debacle.

  • Yeah, and if I’m not mistaken didn’t he recently sign a contract extension? He sure did leave the school in a bad spot. By the way, Jalen Wilson (if he leaves Michigan and we can get him)? Take, take, take!

  • @drgnslayr I’ve been to a few nba games; not my favorite. I have no horse in the race, so it’s boring. I tried rooting for Arthur or Morris, but that wasn’t working either.

Denver/the Pepsi Center sucks. (Nice building - no soul) IF the Knicks were good NY would be fun. Same could be said for LA.

When I realized how big and fast pro players are was during the “Barn Storming tour” that KU Seniors used to do. Sasha Kauhn was faster than the local all star guards…and he looked slower than molasses on tv.

But I’m just a KU fan. What do I know?

Why do you have to do this to us? I was having a great morning. A nice cup of coffee. Cooked a full breakfast. Checking stocks premarket. And then I read this…

  • @Kcmatt7 To make it worse, the loss to Arizona was in the sweet 16. The best KU team ever…maybe…could’nt get out of the sweet freaking 16. Yes, I’m mad at KUSteve for doing that to us as well.

@drgnslayr Even at the college level the athleticism amazes me. Back in the 80’s when I was on campus I spent a lot of time playing ball in Robinson Gym. After football season was over in November the football players spent a lot of time playing hoops. These guys, who by the way, were not elite football players by any measure, flew up and down that court. I had zero chance to guard any of them. They were amazing. I was impressed.

  • Looks like Juwan Howard is going to get the Michigan job.

  • Hopefully that doesn’t impact Wilson… but have a feeling it will. If he hires the Assistant definitely worried

    Just get him on campus.

  • Great hire for Michigan.

  • More Patrick Ewing than Penny Hardaway IMO. Ed Cooley would’ve been a better choice.

  • Just saw that Michigan assistant Luke Yaklich would most likely head to Texas if and when the Howard deal is finalized. Would be a big time hire for Shaka.

  • @Woodrow

Was just about to post this as well. Matt Norlander of CBS is reporting such. Ugh

  • I had heard/read that I believe the butler Coach was in the led his plane had flew in the Michigan for the head Coaching job had been interviewed by them

  • Howard to Michigan is a done deal. 5 year deal.

  • Hmmm. This might entice Wilson to stay. Fab 5 still has some pull.

  • Just get Jalen on campus with RJ.

I do think Iggy staying in the draft may have an impact. Nobody wants to go suck. And that UM roster looks pretty rough right now. 3 scholarships left and basically only two players worth a damn returning. Nothing else coming in. Not exactly an ideal situation to get yourself in.

  • I guess the question is, will Howard be a good coach? That he has pull and connections in Michigan statewide there is no doubt.

  • @Woodrow @BeddieKU23 Probably an upgrade from whoever is actually coaching the Longhorns now.

@HighEliteMajor Heard Yaklich was the main reason UM won out. If anything Texas could become a threat, but I believe they are full up.

@FarmerJayhawk @Kcmatt7 Howard is talking a big game RE recruiting, will be interesting to see if that works out…

  • @BShark Texas or TT? I ask because RJ’s dad was talking TT a bit.

  • Texas. Rumors that Yaklich ends up there.

  • Well this could end this week.

Seemed like a strange move for everyone involved from the get go.

Also, I’m not afraid to say it, Beilein is supremely overrated and I hope he lands a B12 job.

He’s basically Bruce Weber without all of the annoying habits.

  • This is why I don’t think very many college coaches leave for the NBA. You don’t even get a fair chance to implement your culture, system, or anything.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he retires. He is 67 years old and will still ~30M from the Cavs.

  • @Woodrow

Nice pay day to play golf

  • I think Belein is a solid college coach and considerably better than Weber. He pretty much has Drummond and Love who’s hurt about half the time in Cleveland. That place has been a wasteland since its inception out side of the LeBron years. They have all of one division title without him. Arguably the worst roster in the NBA right now. I think that’s why it was so surprising to see him take the job. Maybe because he’s guaranteed 30 million it’s just his retirement plan lol.

Weber has a better winning percentage and is basically one giant choke from the same tournament resume.

    Just saying…

And I think he would have lasted longer if it weren’t for the “thugs” thing that happened earlier this year. Top that off with him likely trying to bring a college atmosphere and I’m sure he lost the team.

  • @Kcmatt7 Yeah the thugs thing did him in. But who cares it’s Cleveland they suck? Management must still think they have LeBron. 😂

  • Texas is going to regret botching the whole Beard thing and not hiring him last year

  • @Kcmatt7 I’ll agree about his poor choice of words but if consistency and post season success mean anything Belein is superior to Weber IMO and it’s not close. Weber has a .03 better win percentage (could be lower by seasons end) than Belien, but he has inherited much much better programs than Belien IMO. Most of Weber’s post season success came in his first two seasons at Illinois with a Sweet 16 and a National runner up. If you take those outta the equation he has made it passed the first weekend a grant total of 2 times (1 KSU, 1 SIU) in 20 seasons of coaching (22 years is his total with the 2 at Illinois). Weber in 22 years at this level mostly at a power 5 school has a total of 4 sweet 16s, 2 elite eights and 1 FF. Belein in 27 years has made 7 sweet 16s, 5 elite eights and 2 FFs. In the regular season I’d say they are even, Weber has more conference titles but Belein I believe was hitting his stride in Michigan. That’s why I was shocked to see him leave. He had 9 tournament appearances in 12 years and was a staple in the upper half of the B10. Weber will most likely 5 for 8 for the NCAA tournament after this season at KSU and will hopefully finish dead last in the B12. I’d say Belein is average and hit his stride late, Weber can’t do jack didily crap with his own guys. I’d say he’s slightly below average because of his lack of postseason success even counting some of his best years with teams some else built. Arguably four out of five of Weber’s best years are his first two with KSU and Illinois teams that were lead by someone else recruiting and development for a few years. Without those he’s pretty much a laughing stock IMO. That’s why it was so shocking to see them tie Tech the title last season, I’ll bet that never happens again. Glad niether one is our coach at the same time lol.
