  @ParisHawk Can’t say about UConn, since I don’t much care about UConn, because of their Jim Calhoun-screw-the-rules-I’m-at-the-end -of-my-career legacy titles that really shouldn’t be counted as UConn titles at all. Hell, Self could have won ten in a row easily had he done what Calhoun reputedly did. Note: it amazes me that Calhoun and Calipari are held in high esteem about their winning, when perhaps any second rate coach in the USA could have equalled what Calipari has done with his anomalous talent stream, and any first rate coach would likely have exceeded what Calhoun did with his reputed “approach to the rules” his last 10 years. Imagine how many titles Bob Knight could have won at UConn “educating” and “recruiting” the players the way Calhoun did, eh? Coach K would STILL be chasing Knight’s all time W number. But about seeding bias and refereeing bias in the NCAA tournament working against the Big 12, the apparent seeding and apparent refereeing of the last couple seasons, plus the comments of coaches about the seeding process, IMHO puts the onus of producing evidence to the contrary on anyone that wants to argue that the Big 12 is competing on a level playing field in post season. Capice?

  @jaybate-1.0 I would like to see convicted perpetrators receive a prison sentence AND a retribution fee (and prison rent) that must be paid in full to the victimized parties (and the State) before being released from prison. If these people want to ever walk free in our society, they have to “pay” their dues. They harm so many people and aren’t held accountable for the damage they cause. Prison time is like vacation for many of these people. Free food and digs. Often luxuries they didn’t have on the streets. Most are professional criminals that game the system. (my generalization doesn’t consider the thousands upon thousands of those convicted on simple drug possessions… a huge travesty in our system!) They should receive a wage for their efforts with most of the proceeds going to those who were damaged and the State for their “rent.” You can’t teach individuals without enforcing accountability. The entire system now is a “free lunch” for criminals with all of us “paying the ticket.” We don’t need a brutal system… that just raises the brutal mentality. It should be fair, but it should be strict and realistic to the harm these people cause others and society. It takes accountability if you want to teach responsibility.

  @Statmachine Like '08. None of those guys were super hyped or anything yet put them all together and they blew away nearly every team they played, locked them down, went at them like a hungry wolf pack. This years team has that same exact potential.

  @ParisHawk True and glad you mentioned that. This move was made as the first move to bring Aaron into the system. No guarantees he stays either, because after his injury heals I expect him to go back to playing for a fat check. But this first step is crucial for the day he is done dribbling and starts using a whistle. Good chance he will do that at Kansas!

  @drgnslayr I believe we are in the same page. Most coaches will play a 7-8 m,an rotation the majority of the game but other players will also get playing time when games are well at hand or because of injury or foul problems… Coach Self has rested players for extended periods of time towards the end of the season before. Also, a deep bench helps not only at game time but also during practice when the starters play against quality competition which helps all players. Coaches will tell you that you can never have enough players for practice and even student assistants are drafted to he[p; having quality players in your deep bench is a luxury that very few team have.

  I know (for sure) that I could not do as good a job as Self does at running this team. I would take his 82% winning percentage and would be lucky to win 50% of the time. Self is a great coach and I’m glad we have him! But Self is like the rest of mankind, and he makes mistakes now and then. I think he just put his foot in his mouth on the “fools gold.” If he doesn’t feel like he did and he liked the results of focusing on low post scoring after that, then there is a great chance he will use the “fools gold” statement again this year, right after we have a game where we hoist up a truckload of 3s. Anyone want to place a bet on that one? I’m willing to bet he doesn’t mention the term “fools gold” again (unless he tries to reverse the meaning). And I will accept that as his acknowledgment of putting his foot in his mouth. Self may be living down his “fools gold” statement for the rest of his career. How will we ever land another top trey shooter when competing recruiters will show their interpretation of Self’s “fools gold” and how Kansas doesn’t emphasize treys. How do we defeat that blunder negatively impacting recruiting as we move forward? I think Self should come out and address his comment. Clearly state that Kansas will use any and all weapons to win a game. Defend the trey! Let people everywhere know that “fools gold” was just a term he blurted out to fit a precise situation and it has nothing to do with how he sets his game strategy. blah blah blah… Like I said above… it deserves repeating… How are we going to recruit the next superstar trey shooter? How?

  @nuleafjhawk No one can tell me that Self doesn’t adopt a different mindset during the tournament. You can’t destroy teams all year long and win 30+ games and then get to the tournament and get the deer in the headlights look like you’ve never played in front of more than 500 people before unless you’re changing the game plan. The competition is so much better. It is a single game elimination tourney. Unlucky, injuries, ineligibility, match ups…All of the great programs have had early exits to inferior opponents in the tourney. Shit happens. We are not deer in headlights but we have slightly underperformed in March, no question. What bothers me, the only thing that bothers me and it is a minor criticism, is that Coach teaches team play on O same as D, and O has to be a little more selfish. We need to train the best players to make plays and not defer to the ‘team’ or the ‘system’ or ‘running our stuff’ or being hesitant to pull the trigger at crunch time. Not scared, just not trained to do it during the regular season, i.e. over-passing and too nice a team player on O. Coach Self’s philosophy is like his game: feed the post, take a charge, play D, rebound, pass to get a better shot, hustle, be tough mentally and physically, etc. All the KU fans know the style, so very different from Coach Williams style (all O no D). . But they are both winners and great program builders and great recruiters and great coaches in their preparation and game time adjustments (concerning the latter Self is head and shoulders above Williams). I just wish we had a personality to challenge Coach Self on his O philosophy, and bring KU a more modern approach, leveraging the superior talent, recruiting great point guards, a little looser and freer and more individual play on offense. More dribble-drive and less passing… This is such a small criticism but it may cause us (a little) to not perform as well at crunch time when one or two players have to take over the game. Wiggs, for example, just cannot only take six shots in the biggest game of the year. If he had been Alpha Dog trained during the regular season, he could have forced it a bit more at crunch time…maybe. Sometimes Coach Self says, “that is not who he is” but he is who we teach and train him to be in large part: a total team player on both ends of the court. UNCLOG THE LANE and turn 'em loose on O (like during the Games!) RCJH!

  @jaybate-1.0 I believe what @HighEliteMajor was implying is that Self will break their spirit by Fools Gold statements resulting in fewer trey attempts and decreasing make % which would somehow validate (in Self’s mind) they were fools gold all along… Man I hope this doesn’t play out…again…

  I think @Texas-Hawk-10 meant “Because Bill Self is not going to go dream killer on one of his players.” And I thought that when Self made the comment about BG and the NBA. That he was pumping the kid up because he knew where BG sat in the pecking order, but perhaps also saw his potential. With Greene, I just don’t know right now. If Self doesn’t place significant value on the three pointer, a player with the three point shot as his primary weapon (logically) would not have much value.

  @Makeshift Yes! Skill-wise, I don’t find it a close comparison between him and Shaq. Shaq had size and was able to take advantage of his size to be effective. But there is no way anyone can compare these two on a skill level and not choose Hakeem. In fact… what other center out there could match his footwork alone? I’m not trying to knock Shaq. He was an amazing player in his own right. But where are all the examples of him taking the ball coast-to-coast, even dribbling behind his back, and finishing at the hole? Or all the crazy back-to-the-basket moves like Hakeem had, including fade aways and all the moves you would expect from a talented guard, not a big man?
