Other Games Tonight

@jayballer73 Wofford is the type of team that would be a 13/14 seed in the NCAA tournament and could give someone trouble. Obviously KU shouldn’t lose at home to them, but it also wouldn’t be surprising if they kept it competitive for most of the night. It’s one of those match ups people would be tempted to take Wofford to cover.

Strongly disagree. Calipari is a bad offensive coach and it showed last night. He also had no answers to get UK coherent on defense. His line-up choice to start the 2nd half was a joke.
You can draw up all the X’s and O’s you want - -after you do that - -it’s on the players, lack of focus— execution - -;- 15 TO’s - -that’s not the Coach THAT’S the players lack of attention – I know of at least twice where Kentucky players just flat as threw it right to Barrett for TO’s and 2 points - Cal can’t go out and execute things for them - -THEY have to do that -again just a plain and simple ASS WHUPPIN - nothing to be ashamed of - – -well wait actually there is lmao – but hey they won’t be the only team that is going to take ass whuppin from Duke this year,
-
Last night was Duke’s A game and it was spectacular to watch. Their A game is the best A game in the country.
They also won’t do that every night. I believe it was Bill Self that said most teams play their A game 4-5 times a season, D-F game 4-5 times a year, and the rest of the season is their B-C game.
For the most part, the Silvio situation won’t impact KU on the court. The one team that not having Silvio is really going to hurt Kansas is if they play Duke in the NCAA tournament. Silvio would’ve allowed Self to play a line up of Doke, Silvio, and Dedric against Duke’s front line.

then they would be fools Hell I’ll take their money if they want to throw it away. - -Mark it down right here right now KU wins this game anywhere from 10-15 points
Hope you don’t think I’m trying to argue - - I just don’t think they will hold up especially with us at home – I understand what your saying but I have never felt any more comfortable about a game like this. - -We GOT THIS - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

That frontline match up would be sweet to see I bet. - -I think actually well for sure IF Silvio was available - I think we would have better frontline if that were to happen— KU a lot of Height from them to go against - just more depth in Bigs. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@Kcmatt7 Dook is for sure the more talented team and has a higher ceiling than prob anyone this season. I’m just saying if they meet later on in the season Dook still wins but most likely but it ain’t 34 point route. It’s prob a 10-15 point win.

That’s almost exactly what Cal tried last night at one point in the game and it got eaten alive.
I think you probably just have to deny Zion the ball with someone like Garrett. He destroyed Kentucky’s bigs off the dribble, so either you guard him with a big and sag WAY off him or you put a guard on him.

What Channel?
-
@jayballer73 ESPN2. It’s a brutal game though. 16-10, 7 and a half minutes to go in the first half…
-
@Kcmatt7 He was trying to match up the height instead of the quickness. The quickness killed them.

Guess I’ll watch some of Stumpy on the Pac 12 at 8:00 tonight should be a scrimmage - would be funny as hell to see them struggle. – -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

TCU has their hands full with Cal State Bakersfield tonight-@ TCU. Tied @ 46 with 8 minutes left.
-
@Gorilla72 I was about to post this, heh.

Good teams in the B12: Kansas, Iowa State, KSU.
That’s it.

West Virginia?

TCU was without two of its best players, Fisher and Noi who are battling back from knee injuries. 6 guys played that hadn’t been in a College Game before. They struggled and I think its a bit early to judge them based on the injuries. If those two guys gets healthy they have as good a starting 5 as anyone outside KU in the Big-12
-
@BeddieKU23 Fair enough. I had only just noticed the score, not the fact that they were without two players. KU would probably struggle without Q and Dedric.
-
@BShark Very dipolomatic of you (and I know it’s not your argument), but Dedric can be replaced with a frosh McDonald’s AA or a Jr. Top 100 recruit. Grimes replacement would likely be a top 50 recruit a Soph with good game experience.
I think KU’s struggle would be a little less against that level of competition. I don’t doubt TCU will give KU a game as long as Fisher is healthy though.

When I looked at the box score I knew Fisher was out but Noi also being out was a big hit to them. They are lucky they survived. Dixon has his work cut of for him if his star players are out

Fisher had a second knee surgery 9/4, which is expected to keep him out 6-10 weeks. Sounds like he may make it back just in time for league play…

Yep. TCU has no margin of error; his top two players cannot be replaced by anyone in the current roster.

I disagree. Doke can’t play against this Duke team. He’s not agile enough to handle Zion. Duke would just go small and force Doke to cover Zion and that would be a huge mismatch in favor of Zion. Plus, Zion is so strong that Doke can’t really bully him on the other end.
If KU plays Duke, they have to play their most agile guys. Doke probably can’t play more than 10 or 15 minutes against this Duke team.
Doke can play against UK because he can match up against Travis inside and likely have an advantage. Doke is very matchup dependent. Against smaller teams, he will often end up at a bit of a disadvantage defensively, and if he isn’t dominating in the post, he probably shouldn’t play much.
Doke is going to have some games this year where he absolutely terrorizes teams and dunks them to death. He’s going to have others where he probably shouldn’t get on the floor more than a few minutes a game.
The question is whether Self is ready to swing that heavily in his lineups and rotations from game to game.
-
“He’s our first option,” Self said of Azubuike, who finished with 20 points and three rebounds. “Even though Dedric (Lawson) may lead us in scoring, everybody will tell you we want to play through Dok as much as possible.
“You know, I was probably not very bright last year, but I’ve never been a guy that thinks you take your best players out in a game. I don’t know how that breeds confidence," Self said. "But in his situation when I took him out late, I only took him out because we were switching ball screens. It didn’t have anything to do with free throws.”
Post Michigan St comments from Self on Azubuike. It doesn’t sound as if Self plans to sit Azubuike based on matchups or FT situations. He’s option #1 in the offense and he doesn’t believe in sitting his best players. Interesting comments
-
@justanotherfan I agree with you. I think we’ll see less Doke against Nova as well.
-
I hope those comments were to build confidence. Doke is a guy that fits on extremes. When he matches up well, he can be one of the most dominant players in the country. When he doesn’t, he can be completely out of sorts on the floor. It’s rare to have a player that can exist at both extremes, but Doke is that guy.
It’s especially apparent because he isn’t the type of guy that can hurt a team if he doesn’t get to his spots. If you can push Doke out away from the basket, he can’t really hurt you because he doesn’t handle the ball well enough to make combination moves.
Self’s in a tricky spot, here.
-
I believe under @Texas-Hawk-10 scenario, Silvio, who is big, strong and agile, would be guarding Zion rather that Doke which makes sense to me.

You make good points. If Doke is struggling with a matchup like he did Villanova last year then I hope he’s smart enough to recognize that and make adjustments if needed.
We will see in a month what happens when Nova comes to town. Doke is healthy and in great shape which I don’t think was the case last season, especially in the post-season. He needs to prove himself in situations like this because the NBA is watching.
Your right though Self is in a tricky spot. Azubuike is a literal (huge) advantage against most teams in the country. It sounds as if Self doesn’t want to gameplan to take away one of his most explosive players on the team. That could do more harm then good from a team and individual perspective. We may just have to see if Doke can improve against matchups that don’t favor him.
-
@justanotherfan I wouldn’t have Doke on Zion at all unless he’s in the paint. With a Doke, Dedric, and Silvio front court, I would’ve put Dedric or Silvio on Zion and let Doke and guard on one of the other bigs.
-
Everyone talking up Duke never mentions that UK started 3 freshmen in the back court and none of them can defend a lick. These freshmen playing against freshmen in games like this also make it easy. That game looked like a pickup game to me. Hardly any offensive sets and ZERO defense on both sides.
-
If Duke were to go small with Zion at the 5, there’s no one for Doke to guard. That’s my whole point. If Duke keeps a traditional lineup with Zion at the 4, then Doke is okay to stay in the game and guard their big man. But if Doke goes small with Zion at the 5, Doke has to come out of the game because he can’t guard Zion, Barrett or Reddish.
Every coach in the country saw what Villanova did to KU in the Final Four last year. There are only a handful of teams that can exploit that, but Duke happens to be one of them.
On the note of UK looking bad against Kentucky, I think we are overhyping the sample size. Think of it this way. If KU’s game against Villanova had been to start the season, rather than in the Final Four, there would have been panic throughout Jayhawk land after seeing Villanova take KU apart the way that they did. The reality is that it was just a bad matchup for KU, and that Villanova likely beats KU 9 out of 10 times because KU couldn’t match up with them. It didn’t mean that KU wasn’t any good. It just meant that Villanova exploited all of KU’s weaknesses.
Duke was the same for UK. If that game was in April instead of November, no one would say that UK was bad. Everyone would talk about how sharp Duke was, how overwhelmingly talented, etc. Duke is going to do that to a lot of people this year - not just UK. I need to watch them again to see how to stop them, but I have some ideas bouncing around my head.
-
@justanotherfan UK is losing tonight
-
I wish I could get a money line on the UK game tonight. I’d put $100 on it.
-
UK is playing an SIU team who returned all 5 starters and has the size to be able to compete. I don’t necessarily expect UK to lose, but I definitely expect SIU to cover the 18 point spread.
-
Oh and that SIU team didn’t have this guy on their 20 win team from a year ago: https://siusalukis.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=3506
He’s back and he’s a monster.
-
Most of their starters/scorers are Sr’s, good recipe for keeping it close
-
The SIU-UK game is on SECN tonight. No other way to watch?
-
@Gorilla72 Do you not get SECN when you stream ESPN3?
-
There’s a handful of good games on tonight.
Iowa St / Mizzou
Auburn / Washington ( both top 25)
Providence / Shockers
Arkansas / Texas
NC Greensboro / LSU
Buffalo / WVU
Good night for the couch and a cold beverage!
-
@Woodrow WSU v Providence is on at 5. Brews are in the fridge already. Going to be a great night.
-
Auburn/Washington looks like a good one
-
I get both the SEC and Big 10 networks on YouTube TV.
-
Buffalo/ West Virginia. Too bad its not a neutral site. Buffalo knocked off Arizona and returns most of the same team. They can compete and win this one
-
@JayHawkFanToo Oh yea I get the games. I was curious as to what @Gorilla72 was using that caused him to have issues.
-
@Kcmatt7 - I’ve “cut the cord” and and only have AppleTV and NetFlix. I usually subscribe to SlingTV for ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3. Now I’m thinking I’ll drop Netflix and go with YouTube TV (if I can get it through ROKU or Apple TV).
-
@Gorilla72 I really would have thought you could still get SECN through Sling.
