Silvio Done

@BShark I think you have to be eligible to play in exhibitions. Our transfers played in the overseas tourneys, but not in exhibitions, I think.
Billy played the exhibitions when he hadn’t actually been cleared by then. Not saying it’s 100%, but things definitely don’t look good.
-
I kinda figured the exhibitions would be Silvio’s swan song. Maybe he can/will get cleared. I hope the NCAA actually does something unlike the Preston case.
Remember Ayton played last year. Will Arizona have to forfeit games? …Will KU?
-
@BShark And we’ll see KJ at the 4 for a stretch tomorrow, I’ll bet.
-
@dylans Sexton was withheld 1 game.

I think he starts tomorrow night along with Dedric. Doke off the bench.
-
@KUSTEVE Did Alabama get him cleared or did they just say to heck with it and play him? And if he was cleared how did they get it done so fast? KUs eligibility issues seem to drag in and on. Maybe because they aren’t clearable, but not convict able either.
-
@Woodrow KK was looking for a sound bite. Asked about it being a level playing field and how KU has won 10 years in a row.
-
If I understand correctly, the admitted evidence and testimony under oath at the trial indicated that KU was not aware of any of the payments and it followed the NCAA ruling that Silvio was eligible and cleared to play.
This reminds me of a time I was in California driving on the Antelope Valley freeway off the 405 and headed to the Palmdale/Lancaster area. The speed limit was 55MPH and traffic was moderate and moving at a steady 70 MPH; I was driving at a conservative 60 MPH on the right lane. I noticed on my side mirror a CHP motorcycle with flashing light coming fast in between the two lanes (motorcycles are allowed to do this in California) and I looked at my speedometer and saw I was driving slightly over the speed limit but considerably slower than the rest of the traffic so I did not think much of it. The CHP office pulled next to me and motioned to lower my window and when I did he told me using the motorcycle speaker…speed it up buddy, you are holding up traffic. I pointed to the speedometer and he repeated the warning to speed it up which i promptly complied. I always wondered whatt he outcome would be if a few miles down the road I was stopped and given a ticket for speeding…would it hold in court?
This seems to be a similar case where KU was given the go ahead by the NCAA to play Silvio and KU followed the decision and rules carefully. Can the NCAA rule against KU after having cleared Silvio and given KU the go ahead to play Silvio, particularly when there is no evidence that KU knew of the alleged violation? I would think that any penalty the NCAA levies would be on Silvio and not on KU. Thoughts?

Another season, another big man ineligible. Rinse Repeat to next season

At least we all saw this one coming.

Still disappointing. It’s obvious the NCAA has contacted KU saying his eligibility is being reviewed
-
If KU played Silvio they’d basically be taunting the NCAA, imo.

4 out of the last 5 seasons KU has had a big man out with eligibility issues!

The comments from Self about having already talked to the NCAA and continuing to work with them suggest that there may be a quick resolution to this for Silvio. I hope?
Quick Resolution isn’t in the NCAA’s dictionary.
I do however applaud the optimistic view at this news

My biggest concern with this is that he is being withheld from the exhibitions. Those games don’t count so reading the tea leaves you could say it’s because Self expects Silvio to never play for KU again this year.
That’s how I see it! Even Preston played in exhibitions while not cleared to play

Hmm. that’s a coach issue. But yeah its bad optics every year

Vecenie knows basketball, btw. Like he is quite smart.

Maybe after Danny left we had to pay the big men to come.
-
Self is on with Petro right now.
Paraphrasing… Self is confident in the way KU conducts their business. It is uncomfortable to have his name and KU’s name in a federal trial , but he also is not as concerned because he knows how he conducts his business.
-
@BShark At some point I think Silvio develops a 3 ball. Also, I think Silvio moves better on D than Mccormack or Udoka. This doesn’t help us on the defensive end chasing 3-chucking bigs.
-
This has had no effect on the team other than Silvio not being able to play tomorrow.
It has certainly effected recruiting.
-
Self thinks this could help the teams focus.
-
Doesn’t think losing Silvio really affects the team because of the depth.
Reiterates he is totally confident on how they conduct their business.

Not to play devil’s advocate but he would never say the opposite to the media. He knows he lost a very talented player and has 30+ games to narrow the gap of his loss
-
That was a pretty good interview with Self. He seems loose, and knows he has a talented squad. There is no doubt in my mind he would love nothing more to win it all this year to stick it to everyone.
-
Silvio just invented the quarter season and done!~

Part of the point is that Sam and Aaron don’t think you can play Silvio along side McCormack or Doke. They are all back to the basket C type bigs. It’s three guys for one spot, essentially. Very crowded.
I’ve heard a lot of really positive things about McCormack so this will be very interesting.

I’d agree with this.

I caught the last part of the interview. Coach Self does not seem too worried or at least does not sound like he is.
-
Where’s @stupidmichael when we need him …

It’s just PR 101. He’s not going to talk to the media and paint KU or himself in a negative light. It would be an extremely bad look to do so
-
@BeddieKU23 It was definitely more than just “No comment” though in my opinion.

Yes I fully understand that.
However, even Soren mentioned how well and smooth he handled the interview.
-
Hard to explain but you can always catch glimpses or key words when someone is worried or hiding something. Coach Self sounded pretty relaxed, open and very positive.
-
Gary Bedore Verified account @GaryBedore
He said Silvio would not have started as Dedric Lawson and Udoka Azubuike have separated themselves a bit but, where he would plug in Silvio, he said he can plug in McCormack and play KJ Lawson at 4.
-
Self was pretty upfront with how this is really effecting recruiting. We all assumed that, but thought it was noteworthy he said that.
-
“Done” lol ok. If you’re going to go there might as well say the FF banner is coming down too.

You don’t think it’s possible that he doesn’t play for KU this year and the banner stays up? I think it’s possible.
-
Unless the NCAA has a lot more evidence than the FBI it is not happening.
-
If they go full Cliff and he doesn’t cooperate, I could totally see a scenario where both happens. As in he doesn’t play AND the banner stays up.
-
I just have no idea what the NCAA’s power/demands are. Can they ask for bank statements? Is Fenny stupid enough to deposit dirty money?
-
Self is usually pretty good with these types of things. I think he was well prepared, as he should be at this point in his career.
Self gets to coach, the team gets to play, but Silvio gets to sit. SMH

Possible, though remote. To be clear, the thread title is getting way out over your skis.
-
@Kcmatt7 They can ask anyone, and they can sanction players, coaches and schools that don’t provide them. They have no formal subpoena power, but as with Cliff once they review someone’s eligibility they can effectively suspend by doing nothing if a kid’s family does not cooperate.
-
JayHawkFanToo said:

Exactly. They won’t drop the hammer for $2500.
-
Yes, Cliff was not officially suspended by the NCCA; KU chose to not play him as a precaution and to take away the NCAA leverage. The NCAA cannot punish a school for acting proactively once it finds out of potential issues.
-

I do think that was positive that the questions weren’t avoided or deflected. This was his chance to put some positive spin on things that are going on and it looks like he did that.
-
@JayHawkFanToo The NCAA punished Memphis for the Rose deal, that they supposedly didn’t know about, right? If we play an ineligible player, regardless of prior knowledge, we can get hammered, clearinghouse or no clearinghouse, right?
And you think the FBI doesn’t have more info? Why would you think that?
-

The NCAA warned Memphis something was fishy with Rose (namely, his fraudulent SAT) and Calipari played him anyway.
