@Texas-Hawk-10 All signs so far have Bill adding a 5. Dickinson or someone else.
To me that signals KJ is going to get most of his minutes at the 4. Maybe some minutes at the 5 if the ball is sticking, but mostly the 4. Word was that the staff didn’t enjoy having to play KJ at the 5. So that is sort of the lens I’m looking at this through. I could definitely end up being wrong.

Ingram is firmly in play now.

I should trust who I heard it from originally more. I feel like there was a lot of public misdirection on this from Bossi and co. We’ll see what happens, as UNC is for sure involved.
-
@BShark yeah makes me wonder if he was always the primary target or if we truly had higher ambitions regarding the portal. The athleticism concerns are a good enough reason.
-
We certainly have few options at the 4 right now.
If he’s the best option, fine, he’s certainly talented enough to start as a freshman. He would be a good fit here too. I’m just scared we will start 2 freshman, as talented as they might be

@BeddieKU23 I’m leaning this way too. I mean you take talent and make it work. But this is a weird add if we do.
I’m operating under the assumption we land Hunter though. If you don’t land Hunter and you can add a 6’8 guy who can shoot the 3 you probably do it?
If we land him, our roster construction is so weird. Bodies for days at the 4/5. But thin and weak at guard/wing.
Yeah Hunter/Mgbako feels like one or the other. Obviously you’d prefer Hunter.
Still have to get a guard and a wing/big guard.
Me thinks I would be just fine with either, but like you say Huner would be the preference but if not - - - -
-
@dylans said in Transfer Rumblings:
@BeddieKU23 I’d usually agree, but a top 10 freshman is better than almost every transfer available. I don’t think he’ll end up at KU, but I wouldn’t rule him out just because he’s a freshman. - My personal wish list is McCullar, Dickinson and a ball handler (so not this 4 if I get my druthers) - he may end up being better than whomever ends up actually available to KU though. Who knows? I’ll root for whomever they sign.
I would be really happy with the two you listed - -then our 4 freshmen coming in would be very solid

If KJ plans on seeing time at the 4 - -then he has LOTS of work to do. He has to develop and outside shot and be pretty consistent with it If he can’t do that then - - he does us no good at the 4 - not that strong of rebounder at this point - so let’s hope he puts in lots of time working on a shot

TCU just took another guard. Writing on the wall with Spears? No info here just tea leaf reading. @FarmerJayhawk @Kcmatt7 @BeddieKU23
-
I think Spears has gone under the radar as a priority guy.
-
So I don’t know where else to put this and don’t want to make a thread…
Syracuse lost a major booster today over some dumb drama. Tough scene.
-
Here’s the link. He feels unwanted by the Chancellor, Kent Syverud. I actually went to law school with Kent, who spent some time as dean of UMich Law. Sounds like there might be fears of excessive donations for NIL.

This is all unbelievably stupid and bungled by the chancellor from what I’ve seen. You do not want to lose bmds. I’m uh, not exactly sad about it though. Some are saying I have the opposite of that feeling in fact.
-
Jeez, this portal stuff is mayhem. This makes recruiting the high school kids seem tame. Now the window is shrunk to a month instead of years, and whoever can offer the best NIL package may win. If blue blood college hoops was a business 10 years ago, it’s now a multi-headed corporation. I know things change, but I can’t say i love it!

Love adding a spark off the bench
-
Just being honest I don’t get the Primo fit unless it is off the bench. You aren’t starting him over Elmarko. And certainly not next to Juan and Elmarko going small.
-
@Kcmatt7 I like him as a versatile guard. We kinda need one after losing both Bobby and Joe. If you start Elmarko, then you don’t really have another lead guard off the bench. At least, I don’t think Johnson is ready for that yet.
I think he could start as part of a three man rotation at guard. At very least it takes pressure off Elmarko to be a DUDE right away. If he is, awesome, he can start right away. But if not, you have insurance there with a guy who can handle and score.
-
@FarmerJayhawk Is Spears even immediately eligible? This is his 2nd transfer.

MENTAL HEALTH SEASON!
-
@Kcmatt7 yeah that’s a big question with a lot of these guys. Allegedly no, but the NCAA has claimed to crack down on waivers before and nothing happened. So no idea. If not then that totally changes things for me. We don’t have the space to redshirt a non-frosh
-
Not sure you can even risk taking him without being 100% sure
-
Matthew Cleveland just announced that he’s transferring from FSU so they do have shots available. Hard pass on spears for me, especially if Cuffe doesn’t leave

jus think you are up the creek without a paddle concerning spears- think he ends up being the 1st commit

Cleveland is better than Spears so that wouldn’t make sense for them at all lol
-
@BShark Oh yeah I just brought up spears since FSU was a part of his top 4 and I’m trying to rationalize anything so he won’t come here lol.
-
Cleveland is a take now and figure out the role later guy IMO. Think he can slot in as a small 4 or true 3 man with the right team around him.

Wasn’t expected, he’s got a destination in mind I gather from talking to their mod that’s plugged into the program.
He can’t shoot so we should be all over it if he hasn’t already got a deal goin

Mod didn’t have any inside info given this was unexpected as of midday Tuesday. However, it wasn’t unexpected to him that guys would leave FSU. He thinks the suddenness & how this came about leads him to believe he has a destination already in mind. He’s thinking SEC but has only a guess at this point

Am I insane for liking DaRon Holmes II (not in the portal yet, respectfully) more than Hunter???!

@BShark not crazy. Guy can play

Always liked him more and we have a lot of familiarity having recruited him. He’s a stud
If those reddit rumors become reality I hope we go all in if we have the need to.

So this is a Self quote from the banquet -
Self said KU would be looking to sign at least three players from the transfer portal. “I’m saying a minimum of three and then we’ll kind of re-evaluate if we can get three,” Self said. He’s looking for … “athleticism on the perimeter and perimeter shooting without question. One thing about this (2022-23) team, if it wasn’t for Juan (Harris) coming off ball screens we had a hard time touching the paint. We need to do some things with some guys who can get their own. We obviously will miss J-Wil (Jalen Wilson) and Gradey shooting the ball. We’ve got to replace that too.”

Minimum of three - maybe Cuffe is thinking of transferring. But doesn’t know if Self can get three KU level players it sounds like. Looking for shooters, play makers - it sounds like athletic wings are in high demand. He also doesn’t say he needs to replace McCullar’s production - maybe a good sign or it could just be he was thinking about offense at that moment.

He has backed up the talk with the targets too.
Timberlake is an elite shooter (doesn’t do a ton else at the KU level though imo), Spears is a guy that can get his own etc…
I think the athleticism part is why they weren’t enamored with Ingram initially, but at some point you do have to take what you can get.
The Cuffe stuff has all been hashed out before I think. He’s not a KU level player clearly. Self would have tried to play him last year if he thought he could help at all.
Think Kevin wants to be done with college basketball but no surprise Self loves him. When was the last time Self openly pined for a player to come back like that at the banquet? KJ he was recruiting back a little, but not quite like Kevin.
-
I want Kev back badly but haven’t put legs into it since it seems unlikely. Really good culture guy, great defender, rebounder & his offensive game was getting better. He had a lot of nagging injuries and deferred to Wilson/Gradey but he was flashing his offensive ability. Kev really became one of my favorite players from this past season so personally I’d really like to see him here another year.

Some smoke for Adem Bona portaling. Don’t think he gives you a new look but rotating him and Udeh would make us potentially elite defensively at the 5.

I mean yes but I have issues with the fact he basically quit on his team to protect himself instead of playing, oh and they found out right before tip he wasn’t even suiting up (Gonzaga game).
-
@BShark I think it’s valid. He’s a much better defender than Hunter and I don’t think Hunter provides actual spacing. But I’m also of the belief that Hunter isn’t coming given that he seems to be entertaining a return to Michigan and his first visits are the DMV schools.

Yeah. I like that we seem to have back-up options too. I’d prefer Holmes but if he never portals, Bona is a fine option.
-
@BShark I think the bigger question regarding Holmes is whether or not he actually hits the portal. Duke fans were hyped beyond all belief that he might enter and he still hasn’t actually entered.
-
Matthew Cleveland - AUBURN TIGER
-
@BShark That tracks.
Bill talks about needing to live in the portal, but Brucie LIVES in the portal. Feels like we’re still learning how to use the portal to its fullest potential.
-
LOT of players committing taking other options - tough to see all these guys - guys w have reached out to going other places
-
I’m not going to be negative until roster is set. A lot can happen these next 2-3 months so sitting tight. Let’s see what the staff can do

@BShark said in Transfer Rumblings:

So here’s my thoughts on the Hunter vs. DaRon.
Hunter is certainly the better player on the block. Better touch, and able to establish position better. They just don’t make bigger bodies than him. Plus he can really shoot it from 3. I’m just not sure he can keep the pace with our style of play the last few years.
But Holmes is better at just about everything else and is a legit NBA prospect imo. If you could unlock what he’s capable of athletically you’ve got a fucking stud. He can run better than Dickinson. Dribble better. Jump higher.
I’d consider them 1A and 1B. You land either of those guys and you’re ++ at the 5 for 23 and potentially 24.
Holmes has the higher ceiling. Hunter raises the floor (with a pretty darn high ceiling). If you made me pick today, I’m probably going Holmes. I think he lets you keep switching everything on D. I think Bill could turn him into a total freaking monster on both ends.
