That guy was really struggling last night. Said some really vile things to a friend of mine (then deleted them).

Watched the game at midnight. Holy cow don’t know where to start.
We have guys who really know the game and can flat out ball. McCullers was so valuable. KJ what can you say other than he is one tough ass playerand put the ball in the hole. Udeh and Zuby made their mark in a big way. We have depth!!
DuJuan was better than any Duke guard on both ends, great game! Grady is a freak!! Highlight reel plays and Jay Bilas will realize that he is a terror on defense too. This was J Will’s best game I think. All American stuff. What can ya say? The whole team was focused and poised. So Impressive.
Duke played like punks and the refs made them pay. You could see the plan was to rough our guys up and beat us down with their length and depth. That last foul on J Will made my blood boil. But who was tougher? Yeah eff you Dook.
13 blocks against Duke I think we got more athletic. Really got after them on D despite being short handed I loved it.

@jayballer67 Zuby is a rebounding machine - did it in high school and circuit against legit bigs
Bill should be forcing minutes his way
When game slows down for him he’s gonna be nasty T rob jr
Not looking good for Zach I’ll say that.

Since I didn’t see the game, will someone describe the Duke technical foul please?
KU player fouled Duke guy on a three. He didn’t get the call. Landed on KU players foot, then after a slight delay flailed around on the way to the floor. - missed call (hand slap on three) followed by a flop - would’ve gone Dukes way in the past.
-
Only two guys that really couldn’t stay on the floor in stretches were Udeh and joe. And they both still did things defensively that kept the game close.
Not sure that it is fair that for joe to play he really needs to score. But with Juan doing Juan things and Bobby being Bobby that kinda the only role available for him. I still think he will get a look most nights to see if his shot is falling. Love that we can trust him to play tough d no matter what anytime he steps on the floor.
Udeh had his first moments where the game looked a bit too fast for him. He had some bad moments where he looked lost or failed to convert on plays we really need him to convert on but still again plays hard. Effort never in doubt. Made some huge blocks. He will be fine.
Bobby didn’t do anything great but also didn’t make any big blunders. There was a time early where I wondered if he’d be able to handle roach when Harris sat. He struggled at first but then settled in and was able to contain him. Even in the second half, Bobby stayed on roach when Harris got the assignment of shutting down that freshman who found his stroke in the second half. (I don’t remember his name but probably because it didn’t get called after Harris switched onto him)
Overall very impressed with where this team is defensively. I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising when you start 3 guys that you wouldn’t be shocked if they showed up in defensive player of the year lists (Juan, Kevin, and kj). This team not only plays hard on defense but does things from a team perspective that we usually don’t see until later in the year. The rotations are super crisp most of the time. The athleticism is there to challenge at the rim (clearly if we can challenge that Duke team at the rim we can do it to anyone). The hands and anticipation of those three defensive studs will continue to give the other team fits all year.

@benshawks08 Ideally MJ can take any minutes Joe might be getting.
-
@BShark That would be an upgrade!

Indeed.
Some more thoughts
I’m just not sure how Zach fits in at all. I have consistently liked what I’ve seen from Zuby he has great instincts just needs to learn the system and have the game slow down.
Our top 5 is very clear currently and this includes KJ. Right now he is absolutely the best big despite his rebounding issues. This does mean starting 2 guys that don’t look to score at all but we made it work against a major opponent that was favored against us.
Jalen is a legitimate player of the year candidate currently. If he keeps up 20/10/5 he might just get it, will certainly be in contention and win conference poty.
Juan is fantastic and was playing on one leg. He orchestrated everything.
The defense has been suffocating though Duke did go after Gradey in a major way to start the 2nd half. Norm made a key adjustment by getting Bobby in there. Well done. McCullar and Dajuan obvs great on this end.
-
@BShark I’m good with that. Zach is somehow slower and his shot isn’t falling making him not playable
-
@benshawks08 TOS showed how Duke 2nd half went right at Gradey which explains why he sat
Bobby came in and we got stops and kept it close then Gradey late off the bunch. I was mad at norm for lineups yet he looked like a genius with that play.
Bobby, Juan and Zuby isn’t a scoring offense why JW shot so much.
JW, Gradey and Kevin gotta carry the scoring load
-
Going to need to find some reliable guys off the bench. Points wise the bench contributed very little. The two bigs off the bench especially Zuby contributed in other ways.
Most cringeworthy moment was Joe chucking up a three and badly missing but got the rebound right back to him and chucked up another badly missed ball.
-
Coach Rob said he sat Gradey because he was tired. I don’t think he was that tired, we can’t have him sit that long. That’ll change when Self is back or after next practice! Gotta push his go button. Wilson finally made some nice passes. We weren’t making them work hard enough on D, and not getting a second shot.
-
@kuballin10 I think Bobby will score against most teams. Just tough for a 6 ft guy to get anywhere when the other team can literally put a 7 footer on him and know another 7 footer is at the rim if he gets beat off the dribble.
I think that Duke team has potential to be REALLY good. Their length is impossible to prepare for. And while they may be a little soft, they have some real pieces that could come together.
Really good win by our boys.

No doubt, Scheyer is going to study this game to figure out how he could have defeated KU. One thing he may have to conclude is that his team may not be equipped to win against KU. Duke is built for the old style and KU’s team is built for a new style. We’re evolving toward the GSWarriors style and Duke, Gonzaga and Kentucky are in classic mode. If you have shooters, it has been demonstrated that the Warriors style can pick apart and run down the classic approach.
Their concerns with officiating reflected the schism in approaches – KU was quicker and more athletic which led to defensive charges, etc.
By no means does this mean that KU or anyone using this style can win simply by adopting it; you have to execute it well and hit shots. But even with just 3/19 threes, we were able to spread things just enough to drive various lanes to the basket.
This can change recruiting over time … because the premium on recruiting a 7ft center (which is fairly rare) is diminished when you construct this kind of team.

He played 32 minutes, third most on the team.
We were never going to outrebound Duke. Our starting 5 man can’t rebound and they are massive.

I really thought our bench would score more. Only Zuby and Bobby got baskets. So, 4 pts from the bench on 2/9 shots. Four bench players played 46 minutes. KU needs more bench scoring. Come on now. The bench did contribute 10 rbs, 7 blocks and 2 assists, so that’s something.

The bench I’m pretty confident would of produced more if MJ would have played

your right on Joe - -I mean we know he can hit the three have seen a couple , just wondering if he just doesn’t get to sped up when he is in and just plain hurrys his shot more often then and not get det before launching -somewhere down the line we might very well need that three point shooting , hope he get’s it worked out

I know some of you all are pretty high on Yesefu and Pettiford. I just haven’t seen anything yet to think they’ll be impact players at KU. I’m hoping they can get some mojo going, but they just seem too small and too timid.
-
I was high on Yesufu, but his shot selection … well let’s just say it’s looked a bit wild. I want to believe, but he’s put considerable doubt in my mind.
Pettiford has looked pretty good by my eye. I think he’ll be a solid backup to Dejuan soon enough.
-
@bskeet I’ve been pro Joe forever but it is MJ time to be that scorer off the bench

No question about it. - I think if we can keep MJ on the floor when it’s his rotation – got to have him. More physical bullish type can get his shot and seems to do an efficient job of doing it
-
The feeling of confidence and alignment with the world is so nice after a big victory.
Living in the afterglow right now.
-
@approxinfinity today is my bday. Got my birthday wish a little early!
-
Joe does it in practice all the time, but he hasn’t been able to translate that into games. MJ has to be ahead of him. I thot BPJ played small- I don’t think he ever penetrated their defense once.
-
He did get a floater to go in over Lively. The only shot he took I believe
-
@jayballer67 his 1 three looked smooth his mechanics are solid just like selden. Just needs to get more shots up and practice - he is a scorer when it’s needed he will make them
-
@Jethro yeah Bobby has to attack way more. He can penetrate at will but the speed of the game I think made him hesitant Duke’s size is no joke after the first two games we played. Guarantee the court felt smaller to each guy

The whole team shied away from driving to the rim at times in that game- drove me crazy. Guarantee you- when Bill gets back, he’ll make them drive it to the basket.

Main reason jalen ended up with 26 shots.

After rewatching that game i just am in awe of Jalen and Dajuans composure. Yes Grady had a brilliant sequence and looked like a senior during that stretch, but how lucky are we to have two returning champions who believe in our potential this year and appear ready to lead us there? These guys arent the left overs from a championship run. These guys are made men. HARD warriors!
