Coaching Carousel

  • @Woodrow said in Coaching Carousel:

Are we going to do this every off-season?

With Les’s age I suspect so. And there will always be a segment of our fanbase (not saying anyone on this board) that unless the coach performs an actual miracle like getting the 2020 Jayhawks to 4 wins or something, it’s time to blow it all up and start over. It’s one of the big problems with having a fanbase used to basketball where you can rebuild in a year.

  • @Woodrow Don’t despair. It seems like every season, but since 1890 we’ve only had 39 coaches. So - we’re going to do this every 3.3 off seasons. On average.

    🙂

  • @nuleafjhawk Good point. Here are the coaches in the 50 years (gulp!) I have been paying attention. The last decade has seen more upheaval than the prior 21 years, however.

    Les Miles 2019-

    David Beaty 2015-2018

    Charlie Weis 2012-14

    Turner Gill 2010-11

    Mark Mangino 2002-09

    Terry Allen 1997-2001

    Glen Mason 1988-96

    Bob Valesente 1986-87

    Mike Gottfried 1983-85

    Don Fambrough 1979-82

    Bud Moore 1975-78

    Don Fambrough 1971-74

  • @mayjay It’s embarrassing (to me, anyway). I cannot understand why we can’t attract good coaches and good players. And, I’m of the belief that there is no coach anywhere that could come to KU and make a winning program with the players that we have. NOT talking about their heart or character - just their football ability. Is Urban Meyer going to turn this team around? NO. Vince Lombardi - NO. Whoever you think the best coaches of all time, at any level are - they can only coach players who can play with the big boys. And you have to have more than one or two. You have to have them stacked up 2 and 3 deep.

Sorry - sermon over. But I’m frustrated. I want us to be good at football too.

Re: the good players thing, I think you’ll be very happy with the class of 21. There are some doodz I’m pretty excited for. Between 20 and 21, it’s the most HS kids we’ve signed in a 2 year period as far back as I can find, so at least the Mason years.

  • They are saying this 2021 class when they all sign will be the Highest Composite class for KU since 2014 , & the highest 247 top class since 2013 So there is better talent on the way. Like has been said it didn’t take us just 1-2-3-4-years to get into this crap hole - it just IS NOT going to take 3-4 years to get us out of it , everyone would like for us to be good in BOTH football & Basketball who wouldn’t been when you have had crap Coach’s like Besty - Weiss - -& Gill you have to be able to understand WHY we are at where were at. - Instant success is just NOT HAPPENING.

Plus like has been said you just can’t continue to keep rolling Coaching Staffs every 2 years or so - that kind of way get’s you no where we have seen that. - -None of your better talented players want to come and play for that type of unstable situation just doesn’t work

  • @FarmerJayhawk I haven’t seen the list. But I hope you’re right. We have to have players or it really doesn’t matter who the coach is.

For sure. Thing that sticks out to me are these guys look like Big 12 players. Not a Miles Kendrick in the bunch

  • @FarmerJayhawk How do we know they aren’t?

  • @COHawk said in Coaching Carousel:

@FarmerJayhawk How do we know they aren’t?

    They’re all taller than 5’8

  • Well three that verballed didn’t sign today. - - not sure if anymore coming or not. -Seen a couple that looked like could be special - - just have to go through the growing process.

Obviously the big thing with this staff is they are staying away from the Juco’s - redshirt some of these guys to go with the other youth and by year 3 gonna have some pretty decent developed kids.- Coach said getting close to85 limit - - but yet still gonna be able to have more

Two pretty solid recruiting classes 2020 , 2021 - and Les saying next recruiting class could be special

  • If KU is to turn this around, the key is to convince everyone that this is going to be a 3-5 year process. We aren’t going to attract the type of talent necessary to turn things around in a single year. A Cam Newton type isn’t walking in to just fix 80% of the flaws on one side of the ball just by showing up in town. So we have to solve those problems recruit by recruit. That takes time. That takes development. And that takes patience.

Agree with you totally. - -Yet you have some that don’t want patience they want it NOW - -doesn’t work that way Like I said a day or so ago. - -Took us more then one or two years to get in the position we are in now & it’s going to take more then that to get out of it.

Les is building this back from the floor up , which is with high School kids. Some people just can’t get it through their heads that the more talented quote un quote elite or upper talented guys are just not going to come until they see we are making progress & have a stable Coaching Staff.

These idiots want to keep Changing Coach’s every 2-3 years , now talking Crap on Miles , give me a freaking break if you have any kind of knowledge you can see progress being made in the program. Hell the players we have gotten to commit last year & now this year - - -a Couple of years ago - -we would have had the door slammed in our face little lone get them to talk with the staff - - We would have the phone hung up on us very quickly and calls not returned.

You have to be able to see/realize the the talent is getting better. - You look at the kids we are getting now compared to a couple of years ago - just look at the Schools that we are competing with for some of these guys compared to schools we were going up against a couple of years ago, - - All high School kids now compared to a lot of Juco’s - just not the same - it JUST TAKES TIME

  • Only two verbals that didn’t sign are Lawrence and Grays. If we can keep those two plus land a transfer (Les wants true or RS frosh from the portal) that’s a grand slam in 21. At some point I’ll sketch out a ROUGH two deep for next season. From what I have now, it’ll be mostly guys with 3 or less years in the program. It’s coming.

Oh ok, when did he sign ? I know at Miles press Conference he hadn’t -oh wait - -are they talking about Jacobi Scott is that right ? - -wasn’t he last year ? - -I’m confused lol

  • Sure hope your right Famer, I read off the Lawrence Journal world a couple of minutes ago them and TOS both said Tanaka Scot had not signed . - not trying to stir the pot buddy but just curious , maybe he has signed late tonight. Thanks for all your input guy- -I sure enjoy your related recruiting in BOTH Football & Basketball - - I guess we will find out sooner or later lol

  • You’re good. His HS tweeted it out. https://twitter.com/murphypanthers/status/1339257477859307521?s=21

It could be a blueshirt where he’s not on scholarship until August, but he’s a Jayhawk.

  • @FarmerJayhawk How tall was Willie Pless? or Todd Reesing?

Ok that’s 2 examples in close to 40 years. You’re ignoring the legions of undersized guys without solid measureables that can’t do it at this level.

If you look at our really good teams over the years, they all had real pro talent. The Orange Bowl team had Talib, Harris, Hawkinson, Briscoe, etc. Mason’s best teams had pro talent on the lines.

I’d rather take my chances with guys who look good on film and can develop than diamonds in the rough. Beaty tried that and it went poorly.

  • @FarmerJayhawk True, but too often a player is overlooked simply because of size. Not overlooking legions of undersized guys; just saying that size doesn’t mean everything when it comes to recruiting. There are some small guys in pro sports doing quite well after doing well at the collegiate level.

I get that. My point is those guys are outliers. Perfect example in this class. Tank Young from Aquinas is 5’6. If he was 5’10 205 would he have more offers? Maybe, but his tape and measureables don’t warrant a spot at KU, even though he put up gaudy numbers. He’s definitely not Sproles, who KU absolutely whiffed on.

Todd Reesing checked pretty much every box other than heighth when looking at a QB. If he was even 6-0 or 6-1, he probably would’ve been a 4* QB and competing with Colt McCoy at Texas instead of coming to KU. If he was 6-3 or taller, decent chance he could’ve been a 5* or very high end 4* player.

I liked Reesing, but his height wasn’t the only thing that held him back. He also did not have great arm strength. He was top notch on decision making and was very mobile, along with being accurate, but his size and arm strength is what had a lot of recruiting services down on him. Even if he were taller, he probably would not have been a 4* because of that, unless he was a better runner that could have made him a higher rated dual threat.

KU has now announced Scott. I think Grays is close to a lock, there was just some bureaucracy that meant he couldn’t sign early. I feel pretty confident Edwin White will announce he’s signed with KU tomorrow. And so will end the early period.

They’ll reach out to any they think can play right away and have multiple years. I don’t know whether that interest is being reciprocated though. We may not have anyone until after spring ball.

  • New OL coach! Lee Grimes. Played at A&M, coached at Minnesota and most recently Charlotte. Deep connections in Texas. Fits the mold of Les’s hires so far. Comes from a big college program, and is young and hungry. We’ll see if it pays off. I at least think it’s an upgrade over Meadows (I know, low bar.)

  • Herman out, Sark in at Texas. That happened in a hurry.
