Och decided in late May. It was a pretty genuine change of heart though, wasn’t planning to come back initially which is why they took JCL.
-
@BShark does JCL possibly decommit?
-
@approxinfinity don’t think so, he is here for more than basketball. He will be a great locker room guy by all accounts.
-
For those who are trying to keep score from home, can someone please list the roster at this point?

For the first time in memory, there are no real bench warmer/practice squad/garbage time only guys on the roster. Everyone can play - although obviously some won’t see much, if any time. There have to be 2-3 redshirts, right? HCBS isn’t going to change stripes - he always ends up playing just a 7-8 man rotation in games that matter. Maybe go to 9-10 this year? Even if so, that leaves 4-5 guys that won’t really get any PT. ? Who starts? Who are the first ones off the bench at lead guard, off the ball, and upfront? Which ones redshirt and which ones don’t, but mostly just sit and cheerlead?

I think this is a year he goes 9 which he has done before with deeper teams. My personal qualifier for this is about 250-300 minutes as that means a player is realistically getting in there in every game for a real amount of time.
My guesses…
Rotation (kind of in positional order): Harris, Remy, Yesufu, CB, Ochai, Jalen, Dave
Possibly rotation: Cam, Zach, Pettiford, JCL
Should RS: Cuffe, KJ
Super Cheerleader/Banjo player to keep the crowd entertained in blow outs: Mitch
A few caveats: Sounds like Bill already loves KJ (who is an absolute BRICK MASON but athletic, so we really can’t say Bill doesn’t have a type…) so maybe he sneaks up the list. I think one of Zach and Cam sees real PT and that it will probably be dictated by defense. Both are elite shooters. I personally love Pettiford’s talent and hope he will win out but I think Harris is more likely to be in the rotation for sure, especially early on. If we count Jalen as a big then we are talking about 5 guys already firmly in the guard/wing rotation. Kinda hard to get to 6.
-
The top 7 is still not an athletic bunch. JCL fills a big off the bench microwave scorer type.
The backup 4 is interesting because its either a guard or a freshman. Braun at the 4 is an interesting thought unless his aggresiveness goes way up… Those two freshman have different skill sets. So intriguing to see.
-
I am glad that I was once again wrong. Good to see Agbaji back in the fold.

Yeah if Jalen was remotely athletic he’d be in the league already tbh. Hard to have an athletic team when you will play Remy, Jalen and Dave big minutes but all of them are great college players.
I do really like Pettiford, Cuffe, Dick and Zuby. All very athletic guys and aside from Cuffe pretty skilled too. I think Cuffe can get there, hope it’s at KU.

I’m right there with you buddy. I just thought for sure he was gone. I will still maintain though don’t really think will will see a lot more from him. I just think he has about hit his ceiling , which don’t get me wrong I’m ok with as a College player. Yet for him to come back and people thinking possibly we will see a much improved - ehh - maybe not some improved ya - -much improved Na. - I think we are seeing hat we are going to get. At the College level that’s fine with me
-
@jayballer67 I’m with you there.
-
I think Agbaji’s return seals Carr to Texas.- - holy crap they are going to be loaded. - -some saying top 3 in the Nation - -how to differ with that
-
Well this is great news. I’m happy to have Ochai back.
I don’t envy Self having to divide up the minutes to all these players, but it’s a good problem to have, and honestly probably what Self was going for after last season. Just need a Remy now.

Self didn’t do much to address the athleticism of the team, but this is a team that will put up a lot of points which was the biggest issue last season. This is a team that will be able to flat out score the basketball and is constructed to maximize the 4 out look.
The main rotation could also very easily end up without any of the freshmen in it. I think Cuffe is a near lock to redshirt and I wouldn’t be shocked if KJ redshirts as well.
I also think this will be a rare season where we Self go with a 9 man rotation because the talent level dictates that. Remy Martin, Yesufu/JCL, Agbaji, Wilson, McCormack is the likely starting line up. Yesufu/JCL and Braun will for sure be seeing big minutes off the bench. Cam Martin makes the most sense as McCormack’s primary back up. Clemence and Lightfoot possibly get situational minutes behind McCormack based on match ups. Dejuan Harris is likely in mix as Remy and Yesufu’s main back up, but is the most likely to be squeezed of Self sticks with his more normal 8 man rotation. The biggest reason I think Harris plays quite a bit though is his defense as he is by far KU’s best on ball defender next season.
I agree the back up 4 is the biggest question mark right now and if that’s the biggest issue with roster composition, that’s a great place to be. I do think Zach Clemence and KJ Adams will be given every chance to earn that spot and I’m hoping Clemence wins that role because he is a natural fit as a stretch 4 that can shoot over defenses. If Clemence and Adams aren’t ready, I do believe it’ll be a combination of Agbaji and Braun filling those minutes behind Wilson at the 4 spot.
This is definitely one of the deepest rosters on paper Self has ever had and I’m excited to see how the rotation shakes out.

Marcus Bagley withdrawing from the draft and returning to college. He’s going to make some team very happy.

His own apparently! Hurley needed a win.
-
Agree the roster is stacked. Hopefully all the pieces fit. Going to be 3-4 good players feeling the squeeze this season as you noted, Self probably has to go with 9 in the rotation and really with this deep of a team he can afford to do so to keep guys fresh and healthy. There should be adequate depth at every position.
-
@BeddieKU23 an interchangeable lineup too. I’m glad that Mitch came back for cheerleading bench and locker room purposes if nothing else, but I don’t see him getting alot of playing time.
-
@Marco i think mitch will get more minutes than we expect at the 5.

I agree Coach likes the things Mitch brings to the floor. The # 1 thing ? - - - - Hustle - willing to get dirty , willing to take that charge , Shot blocker I’ll never get over that he blocks as many as HE DOES block , never ever looked at him in that perspective. – He blocks more then I would of imagined. - Not alot , not saying that but his ability to rcover after getting beat on D is crazy blocking the shot from behind and blocking some for others.
Mitch has no problem doing the dirty work – Mitch doesn’t need the lime light , glamour -that’s the difference between him and some of the others as to where they think where they are more concerned just trying to score. Mitch isn’t that guy. Mitch is a guy that does or at least tries to do what the team needs - -the little dirty things. I’d take me a Mitch any day of the week. Teams needs guys like that , believe it or not plays a vital piece on a team in his own way. -That’s why Coach has no problem putting him on the floor. Coach loves these types of guys who is willing to sacrafice - Mitch will get his minutes probably round 10 minutes I think.
-
@jayballer67 yep. I agree. I think big games, maybe not so much, but 8-10 mpg isnt a bad guess average over the season.
-
Hoping for 0, personally.

@BShark said in 2021 Transfer Talk/List:

Mitch will play some. There will be some match ups where Mitch is the better play as Dave’s back up over Cam. I do agree in general that Mitch probably shouldn’t be a rotation level player this year, but if it happens, at least this team won’t be offensively challenged like last season.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 it seems like Mitch is a better rotation player than Cam for Selfs system, given his history with the team, and better, albeit not great, defense. We all agree Cams D is likely going to be bad. The only way Cam is a rotation player is if he is a 4 or Self greenlights the 5 bombing and is ok with a gaping hole for interior D.
So whats more likely… That ^… Or Mitch playing rotation minutes?

Cam is not exclusively a 3 point shooter and is very good at scoring close to basket. That gives him more value than Mitch on offense. Cam is also the best rebounder on this team which is something KU struggled with last season getting killed on the glass. Cam helps big time in that area as well.
This is why I think Cam gets most of the rotation minutes at the back up 5 spot.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Gotcha! Ok, now it adds up. Fingers crossed that his rebounding translates to D-1.

Sooooo can confirm there’s some interest from Kofi’s camp in coming to KU because of NIL possibilities. Blue blood market (read: 3 strype lyfe) and all that

I mean could you imagine Kofi playing for Bill? He’d get so many post touches.
-
I mean I’d love it. But I don’t see how it shakes out without giving someone the boot. And Dave is the only one who would make sense…
Could this be the first “Walk-on” and then everything gets paid for by NIL stuff? That is a future unintended consequence I see…
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Totally agree, so to those that think so I ask where are all of the Mitch minutes going to come from? Remember, we have Wilson, Clemence and Adams too who have the 4 spot all but wrapped with one maybe even getting some spot minutes occasionally at the 5.
-
@Kcmatt7 That is a great question, and a very interesting one. It is not out of the realm of possibility that such a thing could one day happen.

that’s good to hear for sure. now he would have to sit IF again IF he somehow wound up here right ?- -Now if immediate play would be his case then we know he would not be coming because were full for this year no Scholli’s available. - - -I think once again here is yet ANOTHER kid that ends up in Kentucky - -now that sucks. They are also blue blood with plenty for NIL- -man I wish things were a little warmer for him

Self would have to do someone, either Dave or Cam Martin most likely, extremely dirty to make that happen and I don’t think Self has the character of forcing out a ready to play person for someone else.
The profile of who Self has forced out has always either been discipline issue players or development players. Sydney Curry being a development player made sense to force out to make room for Ochai returning. Unless Self thinks Cam Martin just is incapable of competing in the Big 12, I don’t like what Self would have to do to bring in Kofi Cockburn.

You & me either one. Our roster is Set. Sure Kofi would be a HUGE pick up - - but the situation is just not right , even for him. Coach is not forcing Dave out. The kid has worked to hard , and think Coach well , he is just not that type of guy. Cam Martin if something WERE to happen probably would be the one & even that would be a complete D - - - move at this stage. Really in a way when it’s said and done wouldn’t entirely surprise me if he didn’t return to Illinois. If not there then probably Kentucky. - Just for grins , has this kid made some kind of announcement as to whe he might be picking a School.
Would love to have him but not at the price of having to Sacrafice Dave - - Just not right
-
The easiest thing IMO would be moving JCL to a GA type role. But I haven’t heard anything that the interest has gone both ways.

That’s still doing someone dirty and I would be completely opposed to adding Cockburn if it means screwing someone else over that badly.

Right, which is the big reason why the staff doesn’t appear to be that interested.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 agree. And he should not do it.

Wasn’t Kofi set on following the assistant that left for Kentucky. Him leaving otherwise just makes no sense.

It would be crazy if we had Cockburn this year and Dick next.

Kofi announcing his next destination on Friday. Will be no surprise to where and how it happened
