no more needs to be said about Dickinson- -he has done proved the point

Shak is the mystery to me. Need defense. We shouldnt be acting like a football team with a separate offense and defense team. We need a blended team that can score.
Right why was he taken out while he was a big part of them not scoring for 7 minutes. Can’t be Selfs fault for pulling I guess Rylen and AJ must have had a great practice week and all the sudden learned to play defense smh
-
@jay4ever He hadn’t coached em yet
He runs in the locker room “we got guards” or maybe it was the interview
Guys shot the 3 with confidence
Oh and Hunter didn’t play the last what 10 minutes and Flory did great but people swear still to this day he isn’t good enough
-
Might drop out of the rankings for the first time in a long time. Probably still make the tourney to keep that streak alive. This team has regressed every week since the start. Concerning to say the least.
-
Seriously, this team looks like Div2 or HS team these past few games… i’m lost
-
Now eight losses-- - - -and then there is this - - -Houston - -Loss – -Texas Tech - - loss – -Arizona loss- - so that’s at least eleven losses
-
Ok im going to start a new thread about something
-
@approxinfinity get your popcorn ready, folks
-
@SlimShaddy54 we’re playing catch up with the Utes…
-
Will we even win 20 games to keep that streak alive?
-
@kjayhawks what streak? another achievement for BS? the most active HC who’s got most 20wins streak… gossh
-
just checked - -KU had been ranked FIRST in constitutive weeks in the top 25 at – --231 -Say good bye to that

I believe its at least 20 wins in a season since 1989
-
i don’t care if we lost to better teams, but with bright sides, like different style, improved rebounding, offense… not lost like this to least winning team. sucks…

This team is going to completely erase a lot of Kansas basketball history. It’s because we are lazy and poorly coached
-
@kjayhawks said in Ute came to the right place:
@mayjay He built this roster and coaches them every day for them to turn out the say lazy ass performance. Please enlighten me on how Bill isn’t accountable for this, this team is exactly what I said it would be with Juan (played great tonight), KJ and Hunt.
Self can only repeat the same message so many times. At some point, the players on the floor have to make a decision if they give a damn or not about their pride and effort. If they’re fine with collecting their NIL checks and that’s the most important thing to them, then this is what we’ll get.
-
@kjayhawks wish ewe could yank these over paid bums NIL cause they sure don’t deserve it. – They are getting paid now - -this program at the present is in /Shambles
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Or maybe just maybe the players getting all the minutes aren’t that good
And the system employed isn’t as well
Pair those with quick hooks and favoritism and Bill gets what he made
Blaming it on nil is a poor loser mentality as my boy Jeter would say - losers always have excuses
Reality - his favorite players aren’t actually good at basketball. They get all the minutes, they have all the experience, he built the roster around them and we have more L’s than ever before in Self’s history here
But yeah let’s blame NIL for this even though Self hand picked the squad

Cuz I was at the game! I’m nearly undefeated.
-
@kuballin10 I know dam well that your not going to actually try and say Griffen and Storr are better I know your not that stupid
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Right but it’s same story, Hunt doesn’t attempt to play defense and never has at any point in his collegiate career, he’s lazy as hell on the glass. KJ super under sized big, struggles to get rebounds and shots off in the paint rendering him useless most nights without a jump shot. Juan was pretty good tonight but he’s very limited athletically and isn’t aggressive enough offensively. AJ Storr was notorious for lacking effort thru out the season. Zeke Mayo can’t play defense never has/ never will. The jury has been on this for years! Please explain to me how when this is known by the coach none of it is his fault. It’s called accountability he built this roster and it arguably the worst in 40 years

Yes got to change some contracts, if you don’t play hard you don’t get paid. If anyone one on here showed for work time after time disengaged and not getting it done, They’d be fired. This is a job in a sense for them, they ain’t doing fire them. I’d rather play walk ons that try and get beat by 50 than these goons just half assing it repeatedly
-
Only solace is that we get closer and closer to senior day and wishing good riddance to a majority of the team
-
Let my 9 year old stay up and watch this one. 3:31 left in the game, 62-60 them, Hunt fouls a terrible shooter. We sub out the only guy going for rebounds. I tell my son we probably just lost because even if he misses we can’t rebound with this group. Sure enough it happens and they get 2 points out of it. I hate myself for being right most the time but for as much as a few of you give me grief, about 95% of what I say happens.

Did I say Self was blameless? No, I did not. Is Bill Self 100% responsible? Again, no he is not. At what point do the players bear any responsibility for their play on the court? This where I take major issues with you and others views because y’all never place the blame on the players when they play with zero effort, it’s always Bill Self’s fault for not properly motivating his team. So again, at what point do these players bear any responsibility for their lack of effort on the court?
And yes, I do believe NIL is a factor in that self motivation. Who are the two players that have been criticized the most for lack of effort this season? Do you really think it’s a coincidence that Dickinson and Storr are also the highest paid NIL players on the team and also the two most often criticized for a lack of effort on the floor. They have their money, they know they aren’t NBA players at this point, and that jas shown bright and clear with their effort at times this season.
So yes, Bill Self gets the blame for the roster construction, but the players take 100% of the blame for their lack of effort on the court.
You can even go back and check what I said about this team before the season when someone else here was trying to rip me a new one for saying this team was only slightly better than last season’s when he was claiming this team was going to make a deep run despite ignoring me pointing out the lack of NBA talent on the roster this season.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I like your response and no it isn’t a 100% on Self for sure several times on this thread alone I got on the players. Especially Hunts effort tonight but IMO when you build this roster knowing Hunt and AJ were both like that last year and still include them on it it’s more on the staff. I’d put about 65%-75% of this on Self/staff especially after what was said after last season by him. As I said before his mouth wrote a check his ass couldn’t cash.
-
He’s washed up and dying on his sword. If it wasn’t for me wanting to see Darryn Peterson and Oats having a large buyout…I’d recommend turning the program over.
-
@TYOHawk I have never been this frustrated with any KU BB coach in my life. That being said I think we give Bill next season as long as Dp still comes and Flory stays. He has done enough to have a few bad seasons. If Dp/Fkory jump ship it’s over and we need to move on from him.
-
This is perhaps the least entertaining Jayhawk team I’ve ever experienced and one of the worst teams. I’ve been watching for 60 years.

We are in the pace and space era and we really run lineups with 3 non shooting bigs and a non shooter at PG.
It’s the type of thing you would laugh at happening in another program but it’s become normal here. It almost feels like a middle finger to the fan base at times with some of the lineup decisions.
I saw a Dajuan/Shak/Diggy/KJ/Flory lineup tonight man. Who is supposed to score or create shots in this lineup?

Exactly. I about lost it with that lineup at that point in the game.

Fun with the box score.
This pretty much sums up the lack enthusiasm tonight:
REBOUNDING
Utah 46 KU 36
OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING
Utah 16 KU 6
But just for fun I’ll throw in:
FG %
Utah 36.5% KU 40%

I think what @BeddieKU23 said after the Houston loss is proving to be true. Season killer kind of loss.
The Creighton/Missouri week was the first sign this was a broken bunch. The Houston loss just kind of cemented how disconnected this group is together.
-
So we were the biggest win in Ute history and they didn’t even storm the court. Guess it really wasn’t a big deal after all.
-
@jay4ever extreme success is the sure path to extreme failure. Ask Mahomes.

Question of the week: how many hours per day does our coaching staff spend in the restroom trying for a bowel movement?
-
I’d expect people to be disappointed, but the only “solution” I hear around these parts is fire the coach. SMH unoriginal, boring, tired, sad. If this applies to you, pick your head up - KU isn’t likely to win the national championship this year or next or the next or the next. It’s just a numbers thing. If the National Championship is all you care about, you will be disappointed nearly every year of your fandom. At best you might enjoy one in twenty years or you could root for a team like Missouri and not even know what a final four is like.
If you can’t have fun watching the team grow and competing you will be disappointed nearly every year. For instance, some are really enjoying watching Flory develop. He could be a great player if he figures out how to play with others - help defense, why positioning on offense helps the flow, etc. I look forward to seeing how his KU career progresses.
To me it looks like the team lacks an emotional leader and that can’t be the coach. They need a Travis Kelce, DeVonte Graham, type hype man. There aren’t any true alphas (Frank Mason, Mario Chalmers, Tyshawn, Robinson, Ochai), demand the ball in the crunch time players on the team. I suspect this is why there is such a big let down on the road compared to home performances with the crowd providing the energy at Allen and a lack of an alpha to carry/spark them.
The pieces are there, the spark isn’t. That is on the players to find. You either want it or you don’t and some (most) don’t know the effort it takes - I sure didn’t put forth the effort in sports that I thought I did in hindsight. I quit when I got wore out or hurt instead of pushing thru like, not my, but my loved ones life depended upon it. I didn’t have the heart of a sports champion, I hope the team finds theirs.
-
There’s no solution. They’re just not that talented and outwardly look like they’ve quit on their coach and vice versa.
We just have to wait it out cause Self has a fetish for the core 3. If things look this bad next year with Darryn and Flory then conversations will be had.
-
I’m not enjoying watching this team. I’m enjoying watching my 11 year old’s team as they use fundamentals on the court, run real offense and their bigs stay in the paint. This KU team is an assault on everyone’s basic intelligence of the game. There is no excuse for what we are seeing.
-
@approxinfinity - can you rename the site to KUbitchin? Jk lol
sheesh one Russian bot with intent to sow dissent on here has turned this from a fun sports site to a sad therapy session within about 18 months. Incredible.

Well. I wish i was within 100 miles of you @drgnslayr i would come hang out and talk about your sons game instead, positively of course

I agree with you on two points, but disagree on another.
Yup, they really lack a hype man leader this season. Pretty obvious. Without ever really realizing it, maybe that what’s it takes to win. Maybe it’s not as easy in the one year rental era to find that guy?
Zero spark most days. 100%.
Are the pieces really there? I don’t think they are.

Right, this is why on several other sites there is talk of Norm Robert’s running the show and Bill has suffered a stroke of sorts. Idk what the scoop is but we just don’t play smart basketball and we don’t seem to coach with any common sense what so ever.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk Fair enough. A spark would sure get this team to overachieve - they have beat good teams when they find it. But they lose to crappy teams when they don’t have that edge - Utah, Missouri, K-State. Come on.
Braun nailed it - play for the name on the front of the jersey.
-
Now wtf to do if it’s correct? Buy all the road tickets so they have energy there too? lol Better recruit a hype man for next year, a vocal leader.
-
It’s more than play for the name on front of the jersey imo. They’re just not that good. All of these guys sans Hunter aren’t talented enough for the roles they’re placed in. Dajuan is fine as a starter if you have 3 other NBA players. KJ is fine if you have 2-3 floor spacers with him. But together with Dajuan it doesn’t work.
They’re just not that good. It’s maybe 1 nba player on this team.
-
Hunter Dickenson is Alex Rodriguez…a diva who’s hard to root for…and who has more empty statistics than any player I remember. So many points/rebounds against crap teams and in games that are already decided
-
We just have to find a way to get the guys engaged and wanting to play basketball again.

I don’t want to start a fight on here, frankly I think this is just a really inefficient medium to have a conversation about this. But man…if you think Self doesn’t deserve a whole lot of the blame for this one, I just don’t know what to tell you. (IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT SAYING FIRE SELF)
The pieces very much are not there. Hunter Dickinson is slow and easy to exploit. He has a terrible attitude, is a bad defender, and a sloppy player. He relies entirely on his size (and I think HD is the least of our concerns).
AJ Storr was notoriously an inefficient player. He takes a million shots, which is the only reason he averaged the numbers he did. When you’re a coach with a notoriously quick hook for poor decisions, that’s an odd choice. He’s also switched schools every year since he was 15, so you know he’s probably a poor fit for a school that prides itself on playing for the name on the front instead of the back.
Dajuan is small, can’t shoot, can’t score, and frankly I think is an overrated defender. Did everyone forget what it was like to have a PG that could score? We went from having Miles, Chalmers, Robinson, Collins, Taylor, Mason, Graham, and Dotson. And now we have a guy that’s lucky to average 8 points.
I’m not gonna pick on KJ. It’s not his fault he’s in this situation, and I’m not gonna repeat what everyone has already said. But suffice it to say, he’s a problem. He’s undersized, he’s relied on way too much to play a position that he doesn’t fit. Think about the SF and PF guys we’ve had over the years, Wright, Arthur, T-Rob, Perry, Jackson, Ochai…we’re asking a guy for a lot who’s probably at best a defensive specialist (he’s not that great of a defender, largely because he can’t be at his size, at that position). That’s a steep drop off.
You could just as easily point to the rest of the team and say the same thing. Coit is Charley Moore essentially, undersized, bad fit. Griffen looks like his confidence is shot, and he hasn’t been what was advertised. Shak Moore is fine, but he can’t score. Mayo is fine, but he’s the second scoring option when he should probably be the fourth.
When you say the pieces are there, I couldn’t disagree more. They very much are not. You have 2 scoring options. That’s why we pass the ball so much and it looks like nobody wants to shoot. The roster doesn’t fit. Self was always great at breaking guys down over the course of multiple years, and building them up based on his philosophy. That’s not the situation anymore, you don’t have the time with these guys anymore, and I question whether Self can adapt. I hope he can. He’s the best coach in KU history. But he’s also human. He has an ego like anyone would in his situation. His assistants are largely his friends, I honestly don’t know what they provide. This very odd, very mismatched roster is on Self. It just is. The buck stops with him, and those other factors just exacerbate the problem.
Guys I can tell you, KU will lose every road game from here on out. They will lose at BYU on Tuesday, they will lose at Colorado, and we will get destroyed at Houston. Seriously, place a bet on it. I have! Betting on KU to lose on the road at this point is free money. We’ll probably lose at home to Arizona too.
Guys, things are bad. Bad, bad. You can try to equivocate and compare us to other programs, but we’re not other programs. You can’t have it both ways. Expectations come with the territory.
We are at a crossroads. I do think that a big part of this is the FBI investigation that killed our recruiting. KJ and Dajuan are part of that. They were consolation prizes at a time when we couldn’t get big names. Let’s be honest with ourselves, they would not be playing here otherwise. They are the types of players you throw onto a roster to round it out. Not guys who are multiyear starters, playing a ton of minutes.
The FBI stuff is over, maybe we’ll turn the corner in recruiting now. Peterson is the REAL DEAL. Him and Flory together could be special. You find a few Zeke Mayos to throw around them and we could have a special team. You lose either of those guys and…uh…we might need to have a serious conversation about Self. I genuinely don’t know. We will see.
