Crap on Jeff Grimes thread

  • @drgnslayr said in Crap on Jeff Grimes thread:

If I recall… In our past few seasons KU was known as the “motion offense team” and we ran an offense similar to the Chiefs.

We look like a traditional offense now and we are not owning the offensive end of the ball.

I know Lance is the HC… but wasn’t he going to require a similar style as we moved on to a new OC?

I’m not sure where I place blame yet since I’m a total backseat quarterback in this game. From what I see… our defense isn’t too bad, but they are on the field too much now and getting warn out!

Daniels looks to be without confidence and looks lost out there half the time. I think the first order of business is to settle him down. Run the ball more, including having him run with the ball. Call easier pass plays, and very rarely a long ball. Build his confidence and also stop the TOs!

The one thing I have noticed is that in the last couple of years with our former OC we had the opportunity to quick strike- -that home run offense-- play calls with Big time explosive results - -Big chunk plays rathe it was through the air, or on the ground. -w e were explosive.-----This year – -not so much , we haven’t had that. Th question becomes is it because of Change in our OC ? or is it that the guys just aren’t executing the plays fully ?- -I have a little tendency to believe that it is our new OC to a certain degree anyways. - -maybe with him moving down to on the field—things will change

  • @jayballer67 I think the important part was that the big chunk plays weren’t always long passes either. It was something that would get someone open and moving into space where they could make an easy pass and catch and then rack up some YAC. But maybe I’m imagining that.

  • @benshawks08 right, at this point I have zero belief in Grimes play calling and play book in general. As I posted above on this thread. The special teams scored more than the offense for his last team thru 6 games a year ago. If I feel that way, how do the players? If they don’t trust or believe in Grimes it’s gonna be a long season. There is just too much talent on that side of the ball for us not go average above 35 PPG.

  • @drgnslayr Our play calling even with run game has been very predictable.

We need to be a bit more creative in calling plays for our playmakers, get them open in space and gain yards.

I hope Grimes can take a few plays from AK’s playbook.

  • @AsadZ I’m frustrated that we have ran the option twice this season, gained 20 yards each time to not run it more

  • @kjayhawks don’t want to be too predictable 🙄

  • Officially changed to fire Jeff grimes on my note

  • So i guess the question is does LL put too much faith in JD, or does he have no faith in Ballard?

Jalon Daniels had a 39% rating today. Surely somebody can do better?

C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT QBR

    15/25 184 7.4 1 1 39.3

  • @kjayhawks i think you put grines. 😉

  • @rockchalkjayhawk i know nothing about football but it seems like a wildcat offense with jalon could be potent?

  • @approxinfinity I would certainly run him more now since he clearly lost his arm from the back injury.

He has a good enough arm you still have to respect the pass. But at this point you aren’t worried about keeping him healthy. Every game from here on out has to be played like it is a championship game. Because it basically is if we want to sniff a bowl.

WVU played today like that. Their QB had almost 20 runs today. We need that same since of urgency.

  • @Kcmatt7 agreed. He seems to want to run and is gunshy to pass. Let him run. Worst case, lose him for the season. Best case, running him more opens up the offense. Maybe he finds a comfortable balance and gets his swagger back.

  • @approxinfinity hahahaha

  • Some journalist needs to take the time to compare the 2022 JD vs the 2024 JD. I’m not wasting my time to do it, but it’s screwed up. He’s obviously throwing differently (not even standing on both feet half the time this season). Play option decision making is totally F d up this year. Stupider. Just a total 180 of the guy we knew, and I’d like to know WTF happened.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk The guy selling peanuts has a better completion rate.

  • 8 yard patterns to the sidelines will cut up a defense if the throws are there. The part of the game I saw today was lacking any sort of accuracy on those throws. The completions led to immediate tackles out of bounds. Zero chance for YAC. All of those skilled wideouts must be getting frustrated not being able to get the big plays.

  • @nuleafjhawk - Now that’s funny!

  • @DanR Is he concerned about getting injured?

  • @AsadZ that has to be in the back of his mind.

You know the surest way to get injured?

Play like you’re worried about getting injured.

  • Is this a recruiting miss? Should we have been able to pull a high level backup like Bean who would be able to play right now?

  • @approxinfinity I’m not sure but Ballard must look like dog poo in practice if they haven’t let him even try at this point with how JD is playing. David Lawrence said several times on the radio call due the first half while I was driving. JD has zero zip on the long passes they are just hung up for someone to pick it and way too much zip on the underneath stuff.

  • you know people blamin Grimes, and I agree to a point anyways BUT part of the blame needs to be give to Brian Borland defense too-- --three times late in the fourth qtr surrendering leads yesterday twenty frickens seconds.- -Didn’t feel quite as baad about Illinois after they beat Nebraska, but how the hell you give up an eleven point lead with five minutes to go - That’s on your defense

  • @kjayhawks Ballard could look like a big steaming pile of poo - or maybe LL is just a stubborn ass. I don’t know.

  • So after all the complaints about Grimes and Leipold, have we actually made any changes? Status quo?

  • It sure does not sound like any changes per LL’s last interview. Hopefully, things will improve and we’ll be pleasantly surprised, but I strongly expect we will be having a similar sentiment.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk well, we went from losing by single digits to losing by double digits, so there’s that. I believe it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

  • Well, we can only hope the learning curve for a new coordinator and QB combo comes together quickly.

  • I’ll say this. If nothing changes, and they keep losing, LL deserves some heat.

Big issue now is they have a Lockerroom that is likely on the brink of collapse. You have to fire Grimes even to appease the players if they lose this week.

And if they lose and keep Grimes you can just count me out on watching another game this season.

  • I sure won’t watch next week

  • As one of the guys that has consistently got on Grimes this season. I didn’t agree with everything tonight but he easily called his best game as a KU coach in this one.

  • @Kcmatt7 as much as it pains me admit, coach LL has to start taking heat for losing 5 straight games we led in the 4th quarter or late in the 3rd.

  • @FarmerJayhawk I’ll bet my whole pay check Kansas will not lose next weekend in football.

  • @kjayhawks I’ll raise you two whole paychecks

  • @Kcmatt7 hoping this comment aged poorly. Grimes did much better and we still lost.

  • @kjayhawks if anyone could under those circumstances, it would be us!

  • I really think the bye week came at the perfect time. I think you just have to sit everyone down and start over at square one starting tomorrow. If you are making a coaching staff change now is the time to do. You let every player and coach vent, let out that frustration. Do it behind closed doors hopefully fists fly and straighten up some folks. More forward as a team.

That’s Borlands responsibility. - -He needs to take responsibility for the changing Scheme when you can’t stop QB draws or have a RB run wild on you play after play after play.-- They should be putting a spy on those types of QB’S - -what has Borland done to fix it

  • Need wheeler back

  • @approxinfinity said in Crap on Jeff Grimes thread:

Offense looked pretty great actually. Grimes probably bought himself another week.

    Defense was atrocious.

The season continues to just be a kick in the groin though. Heartbreaker after heartbreaker.

  • @jayballer67 defense was definitely the issue last night, not sure anyone would argue that. But several other games the offense had chances to help and didn’t or turned the ball over. Last night was KUs first lost in a long without a TO.

  • What year end changes are necessary to get the football program on track with our expectations? Fire Grimes and Borland today and start the job search immediately? I’m just as disappointed with the defense as the offense; well almost as disappointed-the offense has just been awful compared with my preseason expectations. Oh, and don’t give me the “good loss” or “close loss” crap on the KState game. Only a win over KState matters.

  • @stoptheflop good loss, close loss.

Dont step out on a punt return at the 1.

    Dont miss extra points.

    Dont cough up unforced fumbles.

This doesnt feel like a bad game plan at fault. It was a failure to execute.

  • @approxinfinity I lost all faith in coach LL last night watching the press conference. Made several excuses and claimed we “closing the gap”. We won’t make a bowl game or even compete with KSU until the next coaching staff is here. I’d give it a minimum of 5 years before that happens. Several recruits have de committed and we just lost any decent in state player last night. This team wins 1 or 2 games for the next two years and LL gets canned. We will have a fancy stadium tho smh.

  • @kjayhawks when I was about 25, I lost $450 in a poker game. That was a huge amount of money for me then. (I’m 66 now) I had a full house and lost to 4 of a kind. Which shows you can have a really good thing going and still lose. That was the last time I played poker or even really bet someone more than $5.

Last night was my present day $450 poker game. I’ve invested way too much time and energy into this band of losers. I told myself I wasn’t going to watch, but I sneaked a peek and saw us score first. Then I had hope. False hope.

It won’t happen again. I’m folding and throwing my cards on the table.

I may root for Oregon. They’re fun as hell to watch. 🏈

  • @nuleafjhawk wait i thought the moral of the story was we were a full house yesterday and KSU was 4 of a kind. Also that usually a full house is good enough. Also that beating KSU might seem like a huge deal right now but there are bigger goals if we have continuity of direction.

Oh well, i suck at analogies 🙂

  • @approxinfinity Hahaha I just don’t see us in position to beat them again for a very long time. There is zero silver linings in this season. We are going to lose a lot of talented players and the recruiting trail looks very bad right now. I’m negative for sure but I’m realistic to a fault and there is just no upside for Kansas football at the moment. This season set us back to square one on a rebuild.

  • @kjayhawks you dont think a competitive game and a good game plan with failure to execute could be pitched to recruits as “insert yourself in this equation and we win”?

  • @approxinfinity not recruits that want to win now. You ain’t winning at Kansas next season period

  • @approxinfinity if im a recruit right now I can go to Colorado, ISU or KSU and compete to win championships right now or go to KU knowing maybe as a junior or senior we may sniff a bowl.

  • @approxinfinity No, I think you absolutely nailed it. Until the continuity of direction quip. More like One Direction - reverse. Last night was the game that firmly cemented our place in history as one of the worst college football teams of all time.

I’ve said it before, but we CONSTANTLY snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Every single game this year we should have won. We’re a joke.
