Transfer Rumblings

We cant have 10 guys on the court at once, and we know Bill doesnt like deep rotations. So if these look like the projected starters i think…. We are just going to be terrible at defense.
Can Griffen d?
-
I mean we didnt suck at d by the metrics this year but we still sucked. So… progress?
-

Right now, we’re looking at a starting line up of Harris, Mayo/Kugel, Storr, Adams, and Dickinson.
That’s a scary line up on defense and I don’t mean that positively.
I think we get Griffen soon but yeah this team will have to outscore teams. Have the dudes for it though.
-
Well, Storr is not coming to KU to be a bench player. He’s a starter for sure. I wonder if Self is starting to reconsider some roles.
-
Billy Eugene dgaf
-
Dajuan-Griffen-Storr-KJ-Hunt with Zeke in the Remy role is my guess

Kugel 7th man is insane btw as he has NBA talent (but a head case).

What was our last squad to be this deep? The last Morris twins team? The title team? Like guys like Kease might have nba potential and he’s like the 10th man.

2016 probably
-
@TYOHawk Yeah that would be the lineup in my mind. What’s the best offensive lineup where all 5 guys are legit threats to score and stretch the floor?
I’d go Mayo - Kugel - Griffen - Storr - Hunter
Best shooters, best athletes (minus Hunter) and Bill’s job is to teach them how to defend.
-
I know it’s great message board fodder but the actual starting lineup won’t matter all that much
-
@FarmerJayhawk Yeah that’s not entirely true. Guys care who starts and they care who finishes/gets more minutes.
If Mayo on the second squad is smoking Juan in practice but not starting he’s gonna get frustrated. Same goes for even if Mayo plays more minutes than Juan.
If who starts doesn’t matter then why wouldn’t Bill or any coach start their best 5 players from the tip?
People like to act as though it doesn’t matter…but it does
-
So is it possible Rylan not coming Afterall now, since Bshark said he isn’t here on OV yet ? --I thought he was coming in tomorrow ?

This is how I know you truly hate Bill Self and want to see him die on TV during a game. That line up does not play a damn bit of defense and would give up 90 ppg easily. I know you’re currently obsessed with UConn, but their offense isn’t why they’ve been so dominant the last two years, it’s been their defense as the driving force.
-
@kuballin10 compared to actual playing time yeah it doesn’t matter all that much. Russ never whined because Sherron got more run late in games. Dave got benched and stuck it out. Tarik Black was bought in from day 1 as a mentor to Jo. Guys are competitive but not burn the place down if I don’t get mine.

Don’t worry on this one. He’s going to be a Jayhawk by end of weekend

I’m sure hoping my friend. - - We landed Kugel - -Mayo- - Storr–& We land Griffin–then gt Acuff- -puts the big fat Cherry on top – -- -YA – ZA - -YA- -ZA -LOOK THE HELL OUT

Team is starting to take shape.
Brea would be an amazing addition from the portal. But would that impact Acuff? Or vice versa?

Acuff is HS class of 25
-
Sweet.
Add Brea and Griffin for 24 and make a legitimate push for B12 championship and final four. Could be a super team, coached by the master.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Their ability to constantly get buckets puts pressure on other teams to keep up and score.
But let’s take a deeper dive for grins. Is Spencer or Karaban some legit athletes or what about Newton???
Castle and Clingan were the best athletes on the team but the rest of that team weren’t crazy athletic.
Bill has issues coaching up defense because of his philosophy compared to Hurley’s.
It’s easier to teach athletes how to defend than it is finding guys who can play d but can’t score consistently for 6 straight games.
In fact we haven’t been a top 25 defense for many years. 2020 is our last top 25 D in the last 4 years and you’re welcome to go back well past that.
Bill’s philosophy defensively is outdated……proven for 10 years. If he doesn’t have a 7 foot cheater center it’s not even sniffing top 25

@approxinfinity seen around that griffen is rated as an above average defender. Can hope that going from Nate Oats to Bill improves that a bit more.
At least with having lineup depth, there is actually some motivation for the players to play D vs timbies getting to coast for 25 mins a game (Sorry for bringing up bad memories, just still can’t believe how much he played last year).

Griffen is a nice individual defender, Alabama as a team just didn’t play defense last year.
-
Wasn’t even an option on the scorecard
-
Certainly wouldn’t expect Kevin on Defense but his size and athleticism are there to be good on that side
-
Imagine throwing out team efficiency stats that don’t adjust for opponent strength or tempo
-
@FarmerJayhawk Feel free to share the data that factors those in and where we ranked defensively for the last 8-10 years……
-
Will do! KenPom.com
-
FWIW - I’m just gonna hit the brakes here. KU had a great team on paper coming in last year and then the wheels fell off. Players left early for various reasons. I’m pumped for the upcoming season but I’m going to wait to see if any of these guys leave without playing at KU. Already rumors of a HS commit looking elsewhere. Hoping for the best but there’s only on ball on the court.
-
since Self joined us, he’s had only one year out of the top 25 in Adjusted D, according to KenPom
-
2018
-
@Gorilla72 I do feel like the majority of us last season thought we barely had any shooting on the team
-
KU’s KenPom Adjusted Defensive Efficiency Rankings in recent years.
2023-24: 20th
2022-23: 11th
2021-22: 17th
2020-21: 12th
2019-20: 2nd
2018-19: 17th
2017-18: 47th
2016-17: 24th
2015-16: 3rd
2014-15: 9th
Offense has been Self’s bigger issue as there’s only been a few times under Self that the offense was ranked higher in the adjusted rankings than the defense was.
-
@rcjhdraft - I was in reference to preseason when Morris, Adam’s et al, filled the rooster before anyone started leaving (or practicing).
-
Please can Jamari and Clemence leave already
-
Grades might not work out for Kugel to transfer. As the portal turns.

Oh geez , welp dng hope it can, but if not turns out he can’t then Coach just keep plugging away- - I’m so lost on Scholi’s now-- -let’s see IF Kugel can’t transfer that opens one-- still think probably Jamari is two -Then if Coach tries to go with 13 players this year I guess that would still be one. So gives us three still right if that’s the case ?
You figure then Rylan takes one of those three—then again IF Kugel can’t transfer-- possibly we work on Brea ?
-

I’m beginning to get this feel that Zach just may end up staying. Coach says he has really changed, probably most improved in just more ways then on the Court also

Yeah, wasn’t gonna say it because I always get skittish on academics

No, they both have long term relationships here and don’t want to move.

We move if needed. Bill has more time to cook thankfully.

This could be a blessing in disguise IMO. I don’t have a ton of Florida connections. Just a kid that used to detail cars that got a huge inheritance and moved to the area. He was shocked Kugel was even being pursued by Kansas. He said he would bet the guy ends up in prison and locals are very happy he is leaving.

Huh. Never heard anything bad about the kid off the court
-
Very happy with the Storr get and applaud the staff for it. Not to be a negative Nancy but I’m not getting excited til I see this group play together cohesively. Not only have we seen transfer U not work in the past. Thinking of 2019 with the Lawsons, Moore and Cunliffe (spelled wrong) nightmare.
Last season around this time we all were saying Natty or bust, myself included. I need this staff to prove to me that they can scout talent accurately and see the team play before I get too wild. Parker, Timberlake and Jackson were misses IMO.
I take @kuballin10 side slightly with Juan. No ill will towards the kid but it’s frustrating to watch him get taken to school repeatedly defensively and screw up but have zero accountability for such. Elmarko or Mari makes one bad play and they are right back to riding the pine. I fully support that type of coaching but you can’t do it to a few guys and not the rest. On paper the guys we got coming should push Juan hard for minutes as it is. If he’s not gonna play like he’s capable, he should get pulled. We should easily go at least 8 deep this season. You get burned get on bench son and figure it out.
-
@FarmerJayhawk it’s just one kids opinion on the matter doesn’t necessarily mean it’s factual. But at the same time not sure why he would have a vendetta against him. Maybe he turned down an autograph lol. I’m probably a little too cautious after the Morris incident, just don’t want high risk guys on the team. Even if it’s the next MJ, we need positive exposure.
-
@kjayhawks that’s totally fair, he’s clearly the biggest risk we’ve taken this cycle and that’s just some questionable attitude and frustration last year didn’t go well for him
-
@FarmerJayhawk for sure and with regards to young kids that have his potential. I hope if his grades allow him to come to Lawrence or not that he excels. I don’t think it’s healthy to wish negative things upon anyone other than Mizzou going winless in conference again haha.

I talked to someone that knows the current Florida S&C coach I will just say I won’t be too fussed whatever happens with Kugel.
-
Get me Griffen to go with Storr and I’m more than fine with a wing rotation of Storr and Rylan with Rakease getting McDowell type of minutes.
-
@BShark Any chance if we lose Kugel…Wade pops in the portal?
