Thoughts on Arterio Morris

Arterio has quite a checkered history. Do we want this at KU?
No, his issues seems more a pattern than an isolated incident based of newspaper articles about him. Also, he seems dead set on playing mostly on-ball and if that’s the case, he wouldn’t be a great fit here even without the extra baggage.

This was from 2022:
The Problem with Arterio Morris and Texas Basketball So, why didn’t I enjoy it? Arterio Morris is why. Not because he did anything wrong on the court, where he led the Longhorns in scoring, but because he’s doing a lot wrong off the court. Morris, you see, was arrested and charged with assault in June; he dragged his ex-girlfriend out of her bed and tried to literally drag her out of her apartment.
This is in addition to the litany of threatening texts he sent her, as well as a video he sent her where he was threatening her with a gun. (You can read more about it, including the arrest report and screenshots of some of the texts, in my season preview piece.) This isn’t getting talked about much in Austin because the local beat reporters aren’t pressing Beard and/or the Texas administration on it to date, but it’s pretty alarming and there’s more than enough evidence to merit at the very least an indefinite suspension. It’s gross, and Beard is ducking any mention of it.
The reason why Beard is ducking the situation was evident Saturday; Morris was raining threes and providing a major offensive spark to a team that needs perimeter shooting in the worst way. Beard wants wins, and he doesn’t seem to care who provides them. (I give other examples of Beard not giving a damn about domestic violence issues during his Texas Tech tenure in the aforementioned season preview, if you’re interested.)

That seems quite prophetic from 2022.

NOOOOOOOOOO ! ! ! ! if we can’t do better then to accept trouble looking for a place to happen , then we are in a really bad spot

Looks like he’s going to sign with us.

Man if we get both Hunter and Morris, that’s a hard group to cheer for

I can handle Hunter a little more then Morris - -Morris - - -eh - - not so much

I said it before, but unless KU was seriously interested in Morris they wouldn’t have ever had him on campus. You don’t let that PR nightmare on campus unless you basically want and need him.
I expect him to announce he’s a Jayhawk on Friday. Expectations from Bill and Goff should be simple. He has to be a model citizen while he’s here and anything short of that will be unacceptable.
From a basketball perspective, Morris is a future NBA player and I low key think he could potentially be the best player on the team next year even if they landed Dickinson. Obviously would need to progress quite a bit, but he has every tool you could want from a player. Dribble, pass, shoot, shifty, explosive, etc. Guy can do it all. If UT isn’t incredibly loaded, he gets a ton more minutes. Probably plays 25mpg at 99% of schools last year.

The KU Athletics PR department will be BUSY if they get those two

Ugh, where’s the dislike button.
This makes us look desperate. Not a good place to be.

In Bill we trust? I agree with you otherwise though…

Gonna have to offset this toxic footprint by recruiting second cousin of the Dalai Llama or something.

In better news, I really like Tyson. Man, that dude is very talented. And plays defense, too.

I agree with you for sure as far sa from the basketball standpoint goes. He is a talent , and could help for sure BUT also like you say there HAS TO BE stipulations with this. - KU can not afford anymore negative pub as far as playes go - Yet I feel your right - -I think he will commit to KU Friday

Oh ok , I mis understood - I thought you were saying no , you didn’t want Tyson. - Ya Morris would be hard to swallow if he ends up here - - but I DO think he ends up here from the things I hear now
-
@BeddieKU23 what if he’s been to counseling?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 Feel like it’s just such a different situation than we were in with Jalen. Jalen was a kid that made a mistake that if we are honest, a lot of college kids make (whether they get caught or not). It was reckless, it endangered other people, it endangered himself, and was a mark on his character that followed him to every opposing arena. It was NOT a direct attack on another person. He addressed it and took responsibility for it. He never tried not to talk about it or to brush it under the rug. He accepted his punishment, and used it as motivation to be a better leader.
I don’t see how a similar redemption ark can be scripted for Morris. Does he deserve a second chance? I think so. I believe everyone has the ability to grow and change. Does he deserve the weight and credibility of the KU brand to do all the heavy lifting of the work of rehabilitating that image? Not to me. Counseling would be a start. Just because I believe a person should be given the opportunity to grow and change, doesn’t mean they get to be celebrated for getting buckets night in night out while they do that.

@benshawks08 pattern of behavior vs. a one time incident is big.

What is the issue with this portal season? We appear to be putting all our cards on a couple of players, without any clear indication we will land them. Some on this thread seemed to think Ingram was a done deal for example. Count me old school, but I like high character players who will well represent KU. I don’t care whether he has skills, but I’m a hard no on Morris, and am disappointed that he is even a target. Would have been fine with Ingram as a JWill/McCullar hybrid replacement, but that ship has sailed. Not really a fan of going after Dickinson, notwithstanding his obvious skills. Issues and means less development for the current bigs. Having watched Spears in person, not really interested in him other than as a bench option - not efficient, doesn’t make others better and doesn’t play much defense. Fine with Timberlake, but more as a bench option than starter. Think Tyson would be a good fit - McCullar 2.0 - but looks like that may be going a different direction.
Am I alone in not wanting to go down the prima donna / problem child path? Nothing good has come of those recruits before now…
