Transfer Rumblings

@kuballin10 Maybe he gets a waiver, you’d have to think the staff feels they have a shot IF they take him. I still do not know.
-
@BShark If he got a waiver and we get 4 dudes - primo Off bench would be solid
Hunter, Tyson, Timberlake and Primo

Primo Spears is not getting a waiver and he sucks. If they take him after taking Timberlake WOOF
Hear me out, swap him for CJ.
Also, he’s a better version of Joe.
Swap yet primo can’t play this year right? I get swapping them on the bases of playing next year but not sold on it. Rather use a scholly for a guy who can play now.
Tea leaves seem to signal cj may decommit.
that is exactly what I was saying. I’m not wasting a Scholi on a guy coming through the portal who very well might not even be eligble this year. - It’s this upcoming season we need to replace important pieces . Not using the Scoli on a guy that’s really not even that good and he sits on top of that - - NO THANKS
-
@jayballer67 that’s the risk and why I’m hesitant for thinking the waiver works
Maybe coaching change he has an out?
-
Every player in the portal will have question marks. If not they’d be pros or not in the portal. So you have to take that into account when evaluating the portal. Spears isn’t great, but he’s a super durable veteran that can get you a bucket and run the point. That’s a need. Especially if you consider Timberlake more of a wing, which I think he is. And it’s hard to find guards who will come in and play with Juan because most want to be on the ball all the time and that’s just not going to happen until Juan rides off into the sunset.
Tyson is still definitely in play, plus the draft process has to work itself out. If the wavier doesn’t come through, we could see Spears get cut loose. I haven’t heard a peep on Johnson. It’s getting SUPER late to cut him loose unless he’s going back to Montverde. Would hate to do that since he’s not really done anything to deserve it and it would be a heck of a negative recruiting tool down the line. “See why even consider playing for Self when even after you sign he’ll throw you out like a bum!” Not hard to imagine.
All that to say Spears is probably a take since he checks a lot of boxes and there’s a lot to play out yet. We’re well on our way to hitting our meltdown quota this offseason
-
@FarmerJayhawk I agree ball handling and solid small 2 to pair with Juan or back him up.
Cj would be his decision based on @BShark comments that his camp is not sure on it. That shouldn’t be negative recruiting as the kid made the decision and wasn’t pushed away.
-
@kuballin10 doesn’t matter. Future recruits won’t know and other coaches won’t care. Heck we still get static about Cheick freaking Diallo on the trail

Never getting another kid from Mali again I fear.

Juan/Primo/Timberlake is not a backcourt anyone is scared of. I don’t even think it could win the league.

Elmarko is a starter.

Spears visit is on.
-
-
The interesting part to this portal mayhem is that we have a Top 10 recruiting class coming in. That’s usually a great backbone.
So is the “normal” recruiting process this insane?
-
Wouldn’t Arterio Morris fill that second guard/ball handler spot? Heard he is making his decision in two weeks. What do the tea leaves say? What are our chances?
-
@RockkChalkk Spears has “a hell of a lot less” baggage.

I think that’s close based on actual production so far.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk the high school process is usually a lot more orderly since the calendar is so long. We’ve put out feelers on c/o 24 guys but this spring and summer is when they identify serious priority targets and start setting up visits for the fall. Those relationships are more longstanding so the staff has a better feel for who’s interested, who’s not, and where the fit would be.
The portal is more like 90 Day Fiancé.

Sounds about right. Just seems to be way more risky, awaiting portal guys. If the coaches haven’t set up their offseason team properly, and fail to pick up the right bits and pieces in the portal…no bueno.

Hope Morris ends up at Depaul. Last I’m speaking on that.
-
@rockchalkjayhawk yeah it’s all whacky. Even with HS kids they can now up and leave, putting you in a bad spot. Just the new normal.

Ya, but makes you wonder. He had stated that he was going to make his announcement in 2 weeks. - -Now it’s two days. and he said it was between KU & Depaul - they were talking & saying the big thing that may sway him would be with KU - -getting that chance to play for a National Championship & Depaul - -ummm no. probably be just outr luck Spears and Morris both - - OH BOY.
Thing is Morris was talking he wanted to play pint - -Umm he not gonna do that at KU with chances of Juan using both years of eligibility - - hang onto your butts - -lot’s of baggage
-
Has ANYBODY heard ANYTHING , anything more at all on Hunter ? - I know he has his Villanova visit starting Friday. Keeping it pretty tight to the vest

Yes it’s hard this time of year with all the exploding numbers of transfers to be patient… we all want this process to be DONE so we know what our team will be. I certainly trust Self to find the right guys, and it’s gonna take time.
Perhaps Hunter will wait to see what Oscar Tshiebwe will do before he pulls the trigger. I’m sure it’s not all about NIL $… every team in the running can find a way to pony up, but I imagine Kansas and Kentucky can easily top the other schools.

What’s new about landing a high profile player being a bidding war? That’s pretty much how it’s been since at least the 1960’s in college basketball.

Have no problem with it being a bidding war but when you’re being disingenuous imo stating that it’s about the best chance to win. Then I think the guy is bsing it. He knows just as well as all of us that Maryland or a Georgetown isn’t winning a title next year.

with each passing day it looks like Marcus Adams is gonna get a chance to prove he’s one and done

Not sure why, but a lot or enough I should say really don’t seem to be as high on Hunter, a lot of them see him landing at Ku. some of them feel that Oscar is better and worried about losing him, some would rather Oscar come back whether then get Hunter. - -it just sounds like they have pretty well thinking he is KU’s - -I’m not so sure about that but

Some thoughts
Let’s say Self adds either Morris or Spears. This seems like an almost safe assumption at this point but it’s recruiting so you never know. Also Spears would have to get his waiver.
Guard rotation: Juan/Elmarko/Morris or Spears/Timberlake
4 guys for 3 spots and 120 minutes. We’d be small at the 3, but good players.
Likely dead weight next season, respectfully: McDowell, CJ, Cuffe
4 spot: KJ and Marcus Adams
Bigs: Udeh, Zuby
So things then boil down to Hunter. If you add him I still think Bill gets a 1 seed with this, even if the 4 spot could be near disaster levels. If you add a ham sandwich in that spot instead, probably a 3-4 seed because Bill is Bill, an all-time great coach. There are varying levels in between too. 2 million suddenly becomes available if you don’t get Hunter who should be announcing before the portal entry deadline. That’s a lot of oomph to maybe get someone else for the 4/5 spot to portal.
Since Bill can’t see to get the 4th spot to open combined with the self-imposed reduction it limits our bench options. Hopefully, we can be a legit 8 deep.
-
If there is 2 million for Hunter, why would McCullar leave? Bill wants him as much as anyone out there. Kevin is not making 2million the next two years, let alone one playing pro basketball.

Different offers for different players. He also just wants to be done with college basketball apparently.

honestly, having the options for the final scholarship be either Hunter or someone coming back from the draft is solid. Lots of conjecture there though

Tyson is in the same boat as Spears of needing a waiver to play next season so that’s not necessarily a loss for KU.

Between the two of them I’d say Tyson is way more likely to get a waiver given his situation at Tech. I really don’t see any scenario where Spears gets a waiver

I fully expect the NCAA to be dicks to players transferring this offseason. It is my belief it is what the coaches and schools want. And talks that went on behind closed doors have the NCAA carrying their water.

I don’t expect Tyson or Spears to get a waiver. Tyson may have a better case, but I suspect the NCAA still doesn’t grant a waiver.
