Yeah it’s very early for this but I wanted to mention something.
With Calipari potentially on the way out and us needing a 4 I’m actually very interested in Chris Livingston. I don’t care about the stats, he is a dude and would do well here with better coaching.
They was talking about him on their boards last night - - wondering why he didn’t play in the 2nd half. - Really Crushing Cal for not playing him
-
Bring on Toppin! Very impressed with his game.

@dylans said in 2023 Transfer Portal:
@BShark Won’t Cal be pretty expensive to get rid of for a couple more years due to his “lifetime” contract? UK fans are talking more 2024 being his last season. (The little chatter I’ve seen)
Seen a fair bit of talk for after this year or next. Common thing is certainly that people who matter want him out.

It just has all of the feelings and signs of a relationship that is ending in the near future. I think the money works itself out.
This year he has clearly shown his inability to coach. Not getting nearly enough from Toppin. Starting Wheeler. Getting nothing from Fredrick.
And I think other schools should want a polarizing guy like him to come in and bring recruits.
A renegotiated buyout that lets Cal still get his money but leave before it turns toxic makes sense for both parties.
-
@Kcmatt7 If you swap the coaches last night I think Kentucky wins pretty handily.
-
@BShark ugh

I’d never want to! Promise. I’ve even soured greatly on Nate Oates.
-
If you were replacing Bill tomorrow I think you’re calling that guy in Ames… Not sure I love too many more options. Wouldn’t be upset with Oats.
I’ll be curious to see what becomes of Wes Miller and Shrewberry at PSU the next few seasons.
-
I just can’t!
-
I can only think of a Jayhawk. Thinking with my heart.
-
@Kcmatt7 Otz would maintain the #cultureoftoughness too.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 makes it hard to let a guy go if he isn’t performing up to expectations when you go legacy hire imo.
I’d obviously love a Jayhawk to do it and be great lol. But easier said than done…
-
Let’s see, who would be the “Jayhawk” candidates? Off the top and keeping it in the family…
Jacque Vaughn
Danny Manning
Jeremy Case
Tad Boyle
Rex Walters
Mark Turgeon
Jeff Boschee
-
Coaching matters a lot, btw

-
@rockchalkjayhawk yea none of these guys would be a good hire I’m afraid.
Vaughn is really the only one that would make my ears perk up, and even then I’d prefer someone else.
-
Aaron Miles would interest me, but I don’t like that almost all of his experience is NBA much like Vaughn.
-
I think Case is getting there.
-
I like miles a lot
-
It really matters to me that they know how special this place is! I’d put Brett Ballard on staff. Boshee. Nick. He has a really good job, though.
-

Little bird will have to leave the nest to prove he can do it though. I like him, but he’s got to either leave and try to build his own resume or stay a long-time assistant. I do think he is going to get a chance to be a head coach soon.
-
@Kcmatt7 he’s learning from the best. Oh, not EJ!
-
@Kcmatt7 Agree we do not want to Neptune this, or even Scheyer it for that matter.
-
KU will have its pick of guys when the job opens. I trust Goff.
-
Goff loves KU!
-
@BShark If I were Kentucky I would fire the assistants and hire a couple that can coach. Cal can recruit himself. Although I think you’re right in assuming a change of scenery would be good for him and maybe Kentucky too.
-
Zeke Mayo has been popping off lately. From Lawrence.

I’m hoping for a guard exodus and for us to go get some dudes in the portal.

Bill will never let Bobby walk though and he should

Would bet on them trying to get 2 starter level guys.
-
@BShark They need two starters if MJ doesn’t come back.
Maybe 3 depending on how you look at the big man situation.
-
@Kcmatt7 Even if he is, tbh.
Zach and Bobby both are not what the staff hoped for. Don’t think Bobby will be shown the door necessarily but Bill just took a class with 3 guards for a reason.
-
Just take every top level wing with size out there in the portal.
-
Bobby can’t stay healthy. Either he has the worst luck or it’s a real issue

Personal wish list
Scoring wing for the 4 spot Personal favorites that I think we could get: Chris Ledlum/Taylor Hendricks
2/3/4 defender with upside Personal favorite: Teafale Lenard Jr
Other guys I’d be interested in: Zeke Mayo, Brandin Podziemski (old friend alert), Aaron Estrada
I think two starter level guys would be enough and then other additions (depending on how many leave) could be good solid bench pieces.
I was thinking an experience 5 would be nice but it’s hard to see that happening plus we should have Udeh and Zuby in year 2. Think we have enough down low.
-
If Zach doesn’t return, I’d definitely be interested in another 4-type body to pair with Adams. Keeps you 4 deep in the post while differing what you have back already between the 2 young bigs and KJ.
Going to need multiple scoring wings. Ideally one is more defender and the other is more perimeter shooter. I’m sure Self sees Gradey/Jalen/Kev moving on after the season so he’ll be out there looking to fill voids.
-
I think there is room for a starter on the perimeter and a bench guy, just thinking out loud.
Either Johnson or Elmarko is a starter. Juan back at PG. KJ is a starter. Have a hard time believing Rice isn’t a starter if he is back. Only leaves one spot.

Going to be very transparent. He just doesn’t seem that good…a poor man’s version of Dajuan who is always hurt.
-
@TYOHawk Bobby isn’t good. Can’t shoot. Not really elite at anything. Constantly unavailable.
He still has potential, but I’d rather find another guy.

Boggles my mind when Self says he’s the next great one. You saw signs from Frank, Devonte, Dot and Sherron early.
-
I thought I saw some things early on last year but he is looking more and more like a career back-up. I am not sure the staff will move on or if he will want to. Too early to say.
Availability is a big thing too. He’s shown now that he is banged up pretty frequently. There are several guys you can point to over the years across multiple sports that would have been good or even great but they just couldn’t stay healthy.
-
Bobby was a big time recruiter for this class. He was a great host and helped land some guys.
The math will be interesting. Definitely will lose Jalen, Gradey, Martin. Likely McCullar. Possibly Zach, Cuffe. -1 due to NCAA BS. Add McDowell, Jackson, Johnson. So there’s not going to be a ton of room. Maybe 3 spots at most? A starting caliber wing is a must get. Maybe 2 with McCullar gone. We’re good at guard IMO. Then it’s best player available. I’d love a one year rental scorer/shooter (wing/guard, doesn’t matter) to take the pressure off the newbies and to rebalance the scoring load.
-
How sure are we that McCullar will move on? Obviously he’ll at least declare and go through the draft process again like he should, but if he doesn’t like his feedback (probably going to be the case), does he return since he’d likely make more in NIL money than on a G-League or international contract? This is another area where NIL is a game changer, especially at a program like KU, where NIL deals can be pretty lucrative.

Good Point
-
Yeah been thinking the same on him. He hasn’t shown the offensive game to make it in the NBA. Returning another year would give him a shot to be a featured player
-
It’s time for Kevin to start his pro career. He is who he is, and that is a dude playing overseas.

Don’t say something mean don’t say something mean don’t say something mean.

🫢️
-
I wouldn’t say it’s ideal but another year gives you 10-14 pts ppg tons of rebounds, steals and headaches
-
Kevin is good glue guy and defender but if he’s our main guy we are in trouble.

As long as he doesn’t get Jalen/Ochai volume of shots I’m fine with it… begrudgingly.
