  • @FarmerJayhawk do you know what happened with the Gonzaga home and home series that was supposed to start this season? I don’t remember seeing anything about that series being canceled or delayed.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I think self said it was starting next yr. They had changed it. They’re also in Maui. Right?

  • Lets get Villanova and Gonzaga locked up every year.

you and me both. The last I knew /read about it was all set. Was looking forward to it - - really quiet other then seeing hear a ways back we weren’t playing. Still not sur what the heck happened.

  • Pretty decent. We have had harder by far , but we have some fairly or should be good to run offense get the new kids adjusted and feeling more comfortable.

Omaha - - -Southern Utah - - - well going back through I guess really those are about it. - -Others should be competitive not saying we should lose those games but might be good games at least not yawners.

Obviously the tough games or harder anyways - - Kentucky for sure , Duke will be a monster - - Seton Hall will be a good game - - & then the battle for Atlantis has some quality teams - -I’ll take it I reckon

Hope that the home-and-home matchup still comes off. Maui is all well and good, but I was really looking forward to seeing them play in person in Spokane (only a five-hour drive for me).

  • KU is looking at potentially 5 non conference games against ranked opponents next season depending on what happens in the Bahamas. Only 1 of those potential games is in Allen Fieldhouse.

Duke and Kentucky are showing up as preseason top 5 teams in a lot of early rankings and Indiana is in the 15-20 range. In the Bahamas, KU and Tennessee are probably going to be on opposite sides of the bracket as the hopeful championship game of that tournament. Dayton is going to be loaded as they return every relevant player from last year when they beat KU and are also projected to be the 15-20 range next year.

This is a pretty good non-confernce schedule. 5 of the 10 known opponents were in the NCAA Tournament last year and and could end up with 8 tournament teams from last year depending on the Atlantis draw. North Dakota St. and Southern Utah both finished runner up in their respective leagues.

  • I’ll never say in June, can’t wait to get to November, but that otherwise dismal prospect is softened by the startup of hoops. Hoping of course to finally see a game with Wisconsin. Payback for Kentucky is necessary after their last seasons wipeout, but we got the last laugh in the most hilarious kind of way.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Appreciate the effort. To have Dook, Tucky, and the Candy Stripers ( IU) in non conference is great. To also get to possibly take on Wisky, Tennessee, or both in the Ballroom is off the chain. Here’s a nice graphic for non-con:

  • I like that we have a few warm ups before slaying Duke’s new savior

  • @approxinfinity I hate propping up those two programs. Let Villanova die now that Wright is gone. And nobody should do Gonzaga any favors by helping their schedule. They have had several opportunities to leave that conference and chose not to, so they deserve to not get scheduled.

  • @Kcmatt7 why? I like both of wright (even if hes done) and few, and appreciate they havent bolted to a p5.

Neither team announced it. I think the reporting jumped the gun. We’re both in Maui in 2023 so we won’t play at Lawrence or Spokane then either.

  • @approxinfinity Mad respect for Jay Wright after he outcoached Bill Self twice in the the dance. I never would have believed it because Nova had a rep for choking in the tournament until they got over the hump in that elite 8 game in 2016. Of course in 18 it was no contest.

  • @wissox Mad respect for Bill Self after he outcoached Jay Wright twice in the dance. I never would have believed it. Of course, in 22 it was no contest. <smirk>

  • @Jethro I still think Jay is slightly better than Bill.

  • Would love to see what the narrative around Bill is if they were able to get B-Mac eligible in 2012 and/or play the 2020 tourney.

  • I think Wright is a phenomenal coach btw. He adopted 4-guard basketball very early. He adapted to his team vs recruited players for a system. One of the top offensive minds in coaching maybe ever. I hope he coaches an NBA team.

I think part of why he retired was just the constant recruiting. And with the new rules it is even recruiting your own players. I’m sure it is exhausting.

  • @Kcmatt7 Nothing is a sure thing but man 2020 was friggin good. I’d listen to arguments that it is Bill’s best team at KU. 7 man rotation had 5 NBA guys and all 7 were pros.

Not sure Jay comes back to coaching but that definitely had to be a factor. It’s getting crazier and crazier. And in this climate…Bill kept all his guys and added his top transfer target lmao.

Wright only outcoached Self once in the tournament. KU could’ve played their A game in that 2018 Final Four game and Villanova still would’ve won. That team was the best college team in the last 30 years and the only other team that’s close to me is the 2009 North Carolina team.

I’d argue Self got outcoached in 2018 because KU should have been able to be at least competitive in that game, even if they lost. At no point in that game did it appear that the outcome was in doubt. Villanova completely dominated a good KU team. Villanova was ready for what KU was going to do. KU was not ready for what Villanova was going to do. That’s on coaching.

  • @justanotherfan None of Villanova’s tournament games were close or competitive. That team was just on a different level from everyone else that season, especially once the postseason started. None of their 9 Big East or NCAA Tournament games were decided by single digits.

  • Trying to say Bill was “outcoached” in that 2018 FF game, is a little like saying the Missourah coach Cuonzo Martin was outcoached when we throttled them this year. That 2018 team was flawed- we had the worst defensive team in the Bill Self era. Loved Devonte, love Malik, Doke, and the gang, but you could’ve put any coach in history in there, they would’ve lost by 18 as well. I defy anyone to find one metric, any metric that shows that Jay Wright is a better coach than Bill. I think some have overreacted to the 2018 loss, and have bestowed sainthood on Jay without noticing that we have the better coach.

  • @Jethro The is one pretty important metric in which Jay Wright had the advantage over Self amd that’s head to head. KU and Villanova played 9 times with Self and Wright coaching and Villanova had a 5-4 record against KU in those games. There’s a reason why so many here, myself included, have a lot of respect for Wright and was frequently at or near the top of who would you want coaching KU if Self left lists.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I’m not sure how you could argue Self wasn’t outcoached. Jay Wright put on a coaching clinic that entire season. It’s a silly argument and I don’t mind losing it which means Self is the best!

  • @Jethro Come on man, Wright coached up a bunch of talented guys but nowhere near the talent of a 2012 Kentucky for example and were a generational team. That’s coaching! Brunson and Bridges are the only two decent NBA players from that group. I really don’t agree any coach could have done that. 2012 Kentucky, yes indeed, Cal had a talented group and I think a lot of coaches could have won with them. Not very many coaches are taking 2018 Nova roster and dominating.

  • Wright had the players he wanted. Fit his system. 5 out rained 3s on us and Doke was helpless. The more successful roster IS the coaching too

  • @wissox My point is the talent difference that year between Nova and KU pretty much negates any coaching advantages because Villanova was so damn good that year, especially in the tournament. I firmly believe Self could’ve come up with the greatest game plan ever and KU played their A game and it still wasn’t going to be enough to beat Villanova that night.

The biggest issue in that particular game for KU was that Self didn’t have anyone who could match up Eric Paschall. All of KU’s options were either too slow or to small to guard him.

  • Brunson is set to sign a contract with the Knicks where he is going to be their primary scoring option, after breaking out in the playoffs. Bridges starts for Phoenix. Paschall played for the Jazz. De Vincenzo is a part time starter at Milwaukee. I think Gillespe signed a two way contract. That makes possibly 5 off that roster to the NBA. Spellman is playing overseas. No great superstars- just guys that played several years in a system and had an amazing year. Sometimes in a game, you just make the shots. Our terrible perimeter defense made them look better than what they were.

I’m going to partially disagree there. That 2018 Villanova team had 6 NBA players in their rotation. Out of those 6, 4 are still in the NBA and 1 is getting his shot this year at making the league with the Nuggets as an undrafted free agent with a good chance at a 2 way deal with someone. Brunson amd Spellman were both 5 star recruits so it wasn’t like 2022 KU with no 5 star players. There’s plenty of good coaches out there that could’ve won a title with that 2017-18 Villanova group.

  • Didn’t the less talented ‘22 Hawks Thump Wright as bad as his talented team whooped KU in ‘18? A wash at best for Philly. I’d take Bill everyday - equal xs os coach, better recruiter, better record, and he’s still coaching.

  • @dylans I think that game would have been a very close game had 'Nova not lost one of their starters the week before.

  • @wissox Lost so bad he quit basketball! Bill ruined Wright. Lol

  • I take no joy in Wright’s departure from the game. I can’t help but compare the way coach K and coach Wright retired. Both are hall of famers. Sure, K has records and is a legend, but the discrepancy in accomplishments did not justify the difference in the pageantry and fanfare.

  • NCAA basketball is worse off with no Jay Wright. Will obviously be fine, but he is/was a class act.

  • Battle 4 Atlantis brack was released today. KU plays NC State in the opening game. Dayton/Wisconsin is the other match up on our half of the bracket so @wissox may get his KU/Wisconsin match up.

The other half of the bracket is USC/BYU and Tennessee/Butler so it’s set up for a potential KU/Tennessee championship game.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 we sure seem to be in Dayton’s path in preseason.

  • Any idea when the Big12 schedule will be announced? I’m bringing my family back to Lawrence right after Christmas for some family time and would love to attend a game that final week of December or Jan 1 or 2. Also, any tips on how I could get tix for said game would be much appreciated.
