2022 Recruiting Thread

  • Here is just another example with players of MJ Rice caliber - -why don’t get to hyped up on him YET till he is actually on Campus and attending class.

The what is rated as the # 2 PG in the Nation the # 8 rated overall player in the nation according to 247 sports Jazian Gortman , will NOT attend College and has just signed a ONE year deal with Overtime Elite worth 650,000 dollars. How can Colleges compete with deals like that ?

Sharing from a post I read like the poster said - -sure we have the NIL for players now , that will help off set some BUT with a player thinking about committing to a School comes with commitment to attend classes. This thing will start to snowball and your going to see more and more players like this go the route straight to Overtime or G league.

Overtime still remains an option for MJ and just think we need to keep an open mind and realize he is not here set in stone yet. - Don’t get me wrong I want him here but just not sold yet - -alot of time before he is here - like Farmer said 10 months - -these pro league can dangle A LOT of money in front of MJ before it’s time for him to be here. 650,000 for ONE YEAR to him would be really tempting.

Seems like we have went from where these kids had virtually nothing no way to have some money to the other extreme as to where now they hold all the cards with the NIL & these pro leagues willing to throw money at them like this - -it might get bad talent wise for the Colleges if this thing really starts to roll - - remember RJ Hampton ? - lock for KU and look what happens - -money talks loud to kids real loud

  • @jayballer67

Yeah definitely a concern Rice could take a better deal somewhere but for now he is committed and that at least is something. Gortman didn’t commit anywhere before taking that deal. KU will presumably be able to be in his ear about staying the College route…

Plus the money can be better in college. Dariq Whitehead didn’t turn down 500k from the Gleague to get less at Duke. Similar for Duren at Memphis I’m sure.

  • @BShark

That’s where KU and Bill/staff is going to have to figure out how to enhance these kids opportunities with the NIL. Can’t just sell tradition, KU brand, KU reputation anymore to these 5 star types. Self is going to have to in my opinion step outside his character box and make KU the most attractive option.

  • @BShark I saw where Duren’s pro deal was 2M so FedEX really ponied up for him.

  • @BeddieKU23 I know KU was kinda “laying low” for awhile after the NCAA crap (believe @FarmerJayhawk can confirm this) and if I had to guess given the recent recruiting uptick the deathstar is fully operational again.

ya I know he didn’t commit. 650,000 for a ONE yr deal to an 18 yr old kid is ALOT of money and not having to go to school. Just play ball. - -But I agree with you too my friend he committed so that’s something even if it’s just a verbal but better then a kick in the pants , like you said Staff still gonna have to stay on him till then. EVEN if he is only here for a year which if he comes I can’t see him probably staying any longer then that but who knows - -here is hoping - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Very true , just depends on the individual. Let’s see play the Devils advocate let’s see what Sharpe does ?

  • Sharpe is going to Kentucky. Done just not announced.

  • @BShark

You could say, Sharpe has been Sharpie’d to UK for a while now.

  • @Woodrow said in 2022 Recruiting Thread:

    Holy cripes.

To @BShark’s point, we didn’t land Precious Achiwua because we weren’t willing to play ball with his guy. Also all but confirmed Rayjon Tucker got a big bag to commit to Memphis after being a silent commit to KU.

  • We need to get Cordell Livingston (Chris’s twin brother) to KU. Walk-on with a big NIL deal, I don’t care.

If he doesn’t go Overtime don’t be so sure. - He turned down one pro team but it was because of their status - still relative young - but with overtime I wouldn’t be so sure Most of the UK fans on their boards are now sayig they don’t think he is coming after his interview they all think he is going G league

Who doesn’t eat potato chips or candy bars? Where’s Frito-Lay or M&M/Mars when you need them?

  • Well, Frito-Lay can barely pay their own employees apparently.

Wonder if he’s a big dog guy? Hill’s pet food is amazing

their right here in Topeka lol

    Maybe their jump shots suck.

  • And that is where it becomes a different game. Coaches just to get players are going to have to also be half-assed agents. Saban and Dabo get it, Young and the guy with the first name DJ 😏 (yeah, I’m being lazy again) raking it in - ESPN (imagine that, considering that they televise the four team playoff) even promoting those two schools on the bottom line.

I support the ruling, but it is definitely a work in progress. KU is going to have to rely on Wichita and KC or owners with ties to KU for contracts.

  • What I like about the Rice signing, other than him being a baller, it reopens the Prolific Prep pipeline and Cali.

  • Rice is a North Carolina kid, just doing the prep school thing. He was at Oak Hill before PP. AAU connection helped here (Team Loaded which Frank and Dave played for).

  • @Marco You can say that again! 🙃

  • As if people didn’t already know , I’m just going to put this out there, you can either take it FWIW or you don’t have to. But for all the one’s out there and not even saying it’s anyone in this site BUT there ARE some KU people who think we have a shot - - -I’m telling you here and now for the one’s who think that there is any chance in Hell that Livingston might commit to KU - - -Pssst please

We have just about as much a chance of getting Livingston to commit here as I have to becoming the Pope tomorrow lol - that’s all. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Memphis or Overtime Elite for Livingston.

Not sure how OTE is going to make money tbh.

  • Memphis is out on the Livingston bros. Not sure where he lands.

  • @FarmerJayhawk said in 2022 Recruiting Thread:

Interesting! Don’t think he fits at this point positionally with KU. Obviously a very good player but already bringing in 2 5* caliber players at the 3/4.

Maybe it will indeed be Overtime then.

  • @BShark I know… But he now lives, schools and balls with Cali kids, right?.. Right… So Cali is somewhat open. But the Carolina connection, coming through yet again…

  • @FarmerJayhawk he’ll be a Jayhawk or pro. I would say pro.

  • @mayjay said in 2022 Recruiting Thread:

Lol. It opened some. Rice is balling with Cali players now, right? Think that he talks about KU? That in itself a is a door. Not to mention the Prolific connection.

  • Looks like Bryce Griggs is going pro as well, high 4 star PG that KU was recruiting.

  • Brief one time Target 5 star PF Kijani Wright to USC. No surprise given their recent success with bigs to the league.

  • @BeddieKU23 said in 2022 Recruiting Thread:

Not too surprised there, looked like KU and others had moved on.

Bad choice. He is not pro.

  • Well, he is a pro right now. He signed a pro contract.

  • 1.2 million is Griggs deal for 2 years. You don’t turn that down.

  • If a Top 50 kid is getting over a million for 2 years to go pro its hard to imagine the NIL ever competing with that. Imagine the price for the cream of the crop kids. Dillon Mitchell, #28 was just offered 2 million for 2 years.

Kinda hard to see this league making money tbh.

  • Time will tell, but when top programs like KU get their NIL programs running to the fullest I can’t imagine that players aren’t making close to that.

  • @Kcmatt7 said in 2022 Recruiting Thread:

The key will be that they can offer solid money plus an education. The mistake before was trying to argue that the education alone was worth passing up millions of dollars (hint: it wasn’t). But if you can offer a guy $200,000 or so per year plus education and training, that’s not bad.

The key is to make the college route competitive. That will be a challenge because obviously these pro opportunities can offer something similar (partnering with a University of Phoenix or similar for online courses) but that is probably still a ways out, though it could come together quickly.

  • @Kcmatt7

In time maybe NIL will be a good option. In the short run the OTE is definitely offering big bucks. Guess they have some deep pocket investors for now. If this jumps off then its tough to compete with. If its crumbles then we’ll see.

Wonder the same but I guess we’ll see what happens after 1 year. Either a short term boom or a long term problem for College B Ball

If this continues , and these pro league make a run of this - - you won’t see NCAA College Basketball down the line - it will be history , NCAA Basketball just can’t compete with these guys

  • Drama drama, sky is falling, waah waah waah…

Say 50 or 500 guys a year go out of HS, on top of all the one and dones. College bb will still be around, lower echelon players move into the ranks, the competition isn’t quite as high but it all levels out in the end. No shortage of good athletes who will move up and be excellent. More opportunities for some to get schollies.

People will still watch their favorite teams, the Field House will still get 16,300, and the sun will come up every day for the next 4 to 5 billion years.

See if your referring to my post? - there IS no of the so called waah - -waah , what it is is fact. - -your going to see more ALOT more of these kids going - The NCAA is running themselves out of sight - out of mind. Between the diminishing of the NCAA - the ajoining of these leagues transforming into super Conferences - And these Overtime Elite’s - - College Basketball is going to be so watered down gonna leave your head spinning. - Your more the welcome to your entertaining thoughts -as well as I am mine - we shall see - it’s going to be a whole new ballgame in the future - the very neat future. Basketball as we now know it is about to Change - a Big change

  • @jayballer67 There is a world of difference between you saying “college basketball is history” in your first post, and now saying it is going to change.

Of course it will. That was my point. It will adapt, and we won’t be wringing our hands about players who aren’t there.

AND the color won’t be nearly as Rosy as some make it out to be

  • @jayballer67 It will be crimson…and blue.
