I was told we don’t want to go Rockets/Warriors small ball because it doesn’t win

I see someone likes twisting what other people say to fit their narrative instead of using statements in context.

I never mentioned the Warriors because they never played a 5 guard line up. They always had a post player whether it was Andrew Bogut, Javale McGee, Kevon Looney, or Boogie Cousins.

And guess what, the Rockets small ball experiment failed because they got ran off the court when they ran into a team with a legit front court.

A 5 guard line up can win games, but it doesn’t win championships. KU will not win a national title with Jalen Wilson at the 5.

  • I think it’s pretty clear this team isn’t winning a title, they might be a second weekend team though. Next year could be really promising.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I didn’t twist anything.

And this team isn’t winning a title with Dave at the 5 either lmao

  • Also the Warriors played small ball lol.

  • Rockets only lost when the lakers switched to small ball and stopped playing davis at the 4. They got worked when they played Howard and McGee. Lakers were just better at small ball lol… this team can absolutely win playing small. They have several 6”5-6”8 guards. No reason to think you need a big guy. Sure there will be a game that Dave or Mitch will help but the best team ku has is playing small

Rockets got their ass kicked by Anthony Davis because they didn’t have anyone big enough to guard him. That’s the damn point is that Rockets got their asses handed to them once they ran into a legit big man in Anthony Davis. None of the Lakers wins were competitive at all and even in the one game the Rockets won in that series, Davis still dominated the paint.

Don’t come at me trying to claim the Lakers played small ball against the Rockets when Anthony Davis played more minutes than anyone for LA in that series because the Rockets couldn’t stop him with anyone on their roster.

  • Literally nobody stopped AD all year though 😂. Small or big. He’s a top 5 player in the world rn. It had nothing to do with strategy.

  • @Kcmatt7 said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:

Actually that was their strategy because the Lakers played through AD instead of LeBron James that entire series except for game 1. But if you think AD is a better player than LeBron and that the Lakers played through AD instead LeBron all year, I can’t do much for you on that one. That was their game plan because the Rockets literally had nobody to match up with Davis unlike LeBron and the Lakers exploited the hell out of that strategy to run the Rockets off the court in games 2-5.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 pick any 5 in the NBA, put them on the Rockets, and the Lakers are still the NBA champs

  • @Kcmatt7 said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:

No shit, how many times have I told you specifically that the Rockets system would never win a championship? And guess what, it got Mike D’Antoni fired because his system cannot beat elite teams. He’s proved it in Phoenix with Nash and Stoudemire by failing to beat Kobe, he proved in New York where the Knicks were an absolute shitshow and he proved it in Houston with Harden and Paul/Westbrook that even with elite players, his system doesn’t win championships.

It also doesn’t change that LA played through AD instead of LeBron against the Rockets because the Rockets didn’t have anybody capable of slowing him down unlike LeBron.

  • @Kcmatt7 And now I’m supposed to think that copying that system is going to be what puts KU over the top?!?! GTFO with that shit take. KU’s only shot this year is to to working to develop Dave so there’s an post presence.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Do I wish we had a formidable front court?

    Absolutely. “No shit”

    Do we? Nope.

So run and gun small ball is how this team will perform the best this year. It isn’t that hard to see.

That isn’t a “shit take” it is just a regular one.

The Warriors have won it all with small ball being an integral part of their strategy. As has Villanova.

Yes, Dave will need to put in 15-20 minutes a game for this team to be successful.

If KU loses in the tourney because they run into a good front court it won’t be because KU played small. It will be because KU lacked the talent/depth to play big.

    There is a difference.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I feel like you didn’t watch the series. Lakers play davis at the 4 normally. Against the rockets they couldn’t do that and had to stop playing their centers. Davis went to the 5 and had a mismatch but he is also a modern big guy who can step away… if you watched the series you know that the best line up plus to minus ratio was the Rondo, LeBron, Morris, Caruso pairing. With either kuzma or davis in the game… yes a legit center who can stretch the floor is better, but if you don’t have it on your team, 5 guards is an option. Rockets still had a great season, but lost to a better team… looks like so far you were wrong on your Wilson take to start the season. He looks like he will have an impact this year.

  • No one is saying you have to totally throw away the idea of McCormick playing but if he doesn’t play better you have to make the change. This team can be a top 10 team playing 5 guards.

  • @jayhawks2010 are you saying the Lakers realized they sucked with their 5 and decided they had a lot of length and decided to just use that instead of trying to play a worse player? And they won!?

No. Can’t be true. Doesn’t work. I’ve “specifically” been told.

  • @Kcmatt7 lol i know! It’s shocking how much sense that makes to just play the 5 best people!

  • I think Dave will have to earn his minutes on the floor just like the other guys will. This already feels a bit like last year… when we kept trying to force two bigs on the floor and it just didn’t work. Now… it’s just one.

I do think it is too early to know how it will go, but from what I saw in two games, I think the only time we ever showed in game flow was the second half of today’s game with 5 guards. Harris was sick. It was like turning a switch on when he came out there.

I know, I know… guard the paint. But that’s only true if your big guy is moving his feet. I was hoping to see big improvements in Dave’s feet but didn’t really see that in these two games. He definitely is in better shape and moves better… but not seeing him being a real force enough yet to say let’s slow the game down for Dave.

With Harris out there we started running St. Joe right out of the gym. Fast break finishes? Huh? Us? Seems like forever since we had scoring from the open court.

That period where Harris came in and we watched the game tempo change should be a definite lesson. Tempo is key to success with this team. The Zag game and the first half and some minutes into the second half we looked stiff and tentative. Harris enters the game and quickly draws his first charge. He was involved in several defensive stops and that alone made a big difference. Then add in the flow he brought to our offense. That was a fun part to watch. The ball didn’t stick!

I’m not even sure we would have won that game without Harris. We kept letting St. Joe stick around, just like we let the Zags keep pulling away. In those moments we had no control of tempo and played awkward and sluggish.

Even in half court offense, Harris made a big difference. He’s a natural play maker… setting guys up… sometimes even a few passes ahead of the finish, like a chess pro plays moves ahead. He definitely sees more of the game than others and the game moves slow for him. As of right now, he looks like our salvation to run him with Marcus because I’m just not convinced Marcus is enough of a play maker to run the show. Could be we do what we do best, and run two PGs (or slip Marcus back to the 2).

I know we have to see more evolve before jumping to conclusions. But I am feeling jazzed up with Harris. He performed just like his reputation that preceded him. I think he’s the real deal… and hope it… because I want to see the brand of basketball he brought today on a regular basis! He’ll make all our guys look a lot better and they will all spark up and perform at a better flow!

Agree they just don’t have that right combo to win a title this year. With a Big OR playing small.

We don’t have a talented enough Big to hold himself up against talented Big’s to carry us through with the others w got. - - We won’t win this with 5 guard small ball either THIS year.

We could be Ok with the small line up for awhile but somewhere through this we will run up against a team say - oh I don’t know maybe - - just maybe a team like oh - - GONZAGA - -or BAYLOR and could be others that have that big frontcourt that would just eat our lunch in the game like Gonzaga did.

Coach Self said in this post game that we couldn’t play that way the entire Season, and mentioned we couldn’t play that way the entire Season in the Big 12 , Saying that Dave is going to have to play. Were gonna have a good Season this year , gonna be fun to watch - -well at times anyways , there is likely going to be some games where it might NOT be fun to watch but hell that can be the case with any team.

Big difference between winning an NBA title playing small and winning an NCAA title with 5 small. - -In the NBA your talking 5 very talented top level small compared to 5 NCAA College small. - -Those 5 small in the NBA are in the NBA cause they proved and are talented enough to be able to compete and compete very well - - that’s why they are in the NBA. - -5 small in the NCAA is not that case, Not all 5 are talented enough to make the NBA, true they might very well be good - - just not NBA good enough to make the NBA. - we gonna be ok. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • Baylor’s front court is w/e. West Virginia will be an issue. Wouldn’t be surprised if KU splits with both this year.

  • Lolz

  • This isn’t KU’s best team under self but the NCAA tourney is a crap shoot. There are plenty of teams every year that have talent and if they get lucky could win it. KU has had top 5 teams go out early and we’ve had 2012 team, 2 seed make a run at the title. This team has less odds then last year but it’s all about who you play. Let’s say we end the year ranked 9th and we struggle against good front courts. We get hot in the tourney and never play a team with a good front court we could win. Silly to write this team off after two games and a more experienced Gonzaga team beating us. We have so much youth on this team from guys that will impact the team (Harris, braun, wilson, tristian, Thompson).

  • Don’t sleep on Virginia Tech. One of these years they’re going to do some damage.

  • @approxinfinity Cartier?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Cartier should be a good piece but he wasn’t that big a factor yesterday. Came off bench 24 minutes 1-8 shooting.

  • @approxinfinity said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:

He looked like garbage for V-Tech. Ball sticks in his hand and above everything else his attitude is piss poor. Him and Weber definitely didn’t see eye to eye

  • @BeddieKU23 I love shit posting Bruce but letting Cartier go was a good move. Team cancer.

  • @BShark I wouldn’t want him. But we will see. Maybe a second chance will change him.

  • Bump - Bill Self is the GOAT

  • Forgive me father for I have sinned.

    alt text

  • Lol, he’s thinking about it!

  • Hear me out…

    Kansas HC Nate Oats

I am not advocating for Self to be fired, just having fun.

He’s on my very short list if Bill dies in a plane crash on vacation or some other awful thing

  • Ewww

  • 7-5 ass Villanova multiple 20 point losses

  • @BShark said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:

So overrated and was still in the top 10

  • Nate Oats might screw around and lose to Missouri again.

  • @BShark said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:

    Oh Lordy

  • Virginia is 12-8. Louisville is 11-9. These are programs that have been in the FF pretty recently. Self has his faults but is REMARKABLE in that he never seems to end up with down years like that.

  • @BShark Dook was 15-13 last year, as I recall. Tucky was 9-16. We don’t have years like that. Whoever we get once Bill calls it quits will be a step down.

  • @Jethro yep yep yep.

UNC right now too… One bad hire away.

  • @BShark Nice coif dude.

  • Will Wade might be a bit of a dummy. Obviously he can recruit but my would be interested in Will Wade if Self retired talk is looking a bit rough.

  • @BShark to rough and to dumb

  • My king Will Wade has fallen, fired by LSU.

  • @BShark said in EMPEROR OF BASKETBALL:

My king Will Wade has fallen, fired by LSU.

So many teams should hire him it’s not even funny. Maryland, KSU, Mizzou

What he did and got caught doing is legal now. Guy is going to thrive with the new rules

  • KU should absolutely back and keep Self. Idgaf that he participated in something every single good basketball team does. It’s dumb that LSU cares. He will land on his feet

  • @Kcmatt7

Perhaps the NOA was the final straw. They canned Eddy for football too so its been a bit of getting away from things

  • @BeddieKU23 they had to know they were coming though right? Seems funny to have not fired him sooner if that was the reason

  • Maybe he spends a year in the studio rehabbing his image?

Rick Pitino gets a P5 job this off-season too yea?
