MILES IS NEW COACH

@BShark Hugh Freeze as off coordinator - we’ll have the whole Dixie Mafia on board before you can say “Pooka to the left …Pooka to the right …”. No doubt Freeze would be a remarkable play caller- is he going to be our recruiting coordinator? Not sure that would end well. We could full monte on it, turn overnite into a football machine, have a Top 5 recruiting class, then take our ncaa penalties, lay low for a year or two, and then gear it up back again.
The only reason Freeze got outed is because he beat Bama too much.
-
@jayballer73 Freeze was head coach at Miss when they went to the Top 5 in rankings and recruiting, and then got hammered by the NCAA for recruiting violations. Freeze was let go. He did have a big year or two, until he got caught.
-
@BShark It wouldn’t surprise me if Alabama turned them in.

@jayballer73 Freeze beat Bama 2 times in a row and it was almost 3. Helluva coach and good friends with Les as well. Would be a slam dunk hire as OC/HCIW.

Seen his name mentioned during the presser - ok so I have no idea where is this guy from?
Ole Miss coach who committed numerous recruiting violations and is the reason Ole Miss will be at the bottom of the SEC with Arkansas for the foreseeable future. I believe Freeze is also the reason Houston Nutt was able to successfully sue Ole Miss for defamation.
I’m shocked he doesn’t have a show cause label attached to him right now. I wouldn’t touch the guy with a 100’ pole right now. The man is walking trouble.
-
Every coach in the SEC has committed numerous violations.

Hell no that’s not a slam dunk!!!
Ole Miss is in the middle of a two year bowl ban, 4 former Ole Miss staffers received show cause tags, Ole Miss got hit with lack of institutional control, scholarship reductions, vacating wins, 4 years of probation.
Why on earth would you want someone with that track record anywhere near Lawrence and KU?

BULLSHIT!!!

Why would you want Bill Self or Kurtis Townsend around the basketball program?

I’d listen to the argument that he could have been better at not getting caught. SEC football is as dirty as it gets though.

Go look at laundry list of sanctions Ole Miss is dealing with right now because of Freeze. Why the hell would want someone that careless and reckless anywhere near this program?
-
The right assistants and coordinators might be able to bring their own recruits. Regardless, it is the absolute best hire we could have expected.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 I’m aware.
KT left California with violations.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 And look I’m not saying Freeze has to be the hire. I wouldn’t hate it though.
I’d be just as fine with Jedd Fisch or another brilliant offensive mind.

Townsend himself did not have violations directly attached to his name like Freeze does. Townsend also did not to KU directly from Cal. He was at 4 other schools before he came to KU.
Townsend has also always been an assistant coach. Hugh Freeze was the head coach who actively participated in the NCAA violations. If they were minor violations, it wouldn’t be a big deal. To get the sanctions Freeze got at Ole Miss, he was a dumbass and he would still be a dumbass at KU.
-
Les is above criticism now. It wouldn’t surprise me if they announced Hugh Freeze in the next few days.

Matt Tait @mctait
Had a chance to chat with Les Miles, one on one, after his presser & I got the feeling he’s got at least half of his staff in place. Nothing official or signed yet, but the guy knows who his guys are… #KUfball

If we could land Fisch as our OC - -would be a great hire

Sounds really good to me - -we need to get rolling. - Kind of figured that might be the case - -so they can get out and get after some kids. - Would be really hard to recruit and try to assemble a staff at the same time – got all the confidence Les is going to get some solid asst Coach’s - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

I’d put a nice sum on the OC being Fisch

This would be great. Top option for me, with Freeze being a fallback.
-
All I care about with a new staff is that Bowen isn’t on it.
-
@Kcmatt7 I’d be fine with Bowen as a Defensive Backs coach but that’s it. He has sent several defensive back that he has worked with to the NFL. I’d be ok if Bill Miller and Tony Hull stayed as well, other than that I’m not sure I want another person returning.
-
@kjayhawks time for Bowen to go. It would send a weird message to the players to keep him on (especially a demotion). Really I feel the same way with everyone except Hull. (Which it seems like he’s already staying considering he was still out recruiting even after Beaty got canned). I mean, if we are being honest, it seems like the only guy on Beaty’s staff who can recruit at the level Miles will be wanting is Hull.
What I am hoping is that Miles knows 3 or 4 or 10 Hulls. Miles recruited his ass off at LSU. I expect to see recruiting to KU better than we ever could have imagined.
-
REMOVE THE TAINT OF BOWEN
-
What style of offense is Coach Miles going to run? Do we have a QB to run it? Is Carter Stanley the presumed starter for now?
-
@stoptheflop I’d bet that we go mobile QB and ball control starting next season. I expect either a JUCO QB to come in and start or him to zero in on LeGendre and try to sway him back to KU as a day 1 starter.
-
Signing Les is a bonus to our basketball program. What impact might this have on basketball recruiting? I’d say it won’t hurt too much, not sure if it will help that much either.

We’re going to line up in the I and smack people. At least some of the time. Based on personnel, I bet it’ll be more of a run heavy spread just because that’s the personnel we’ll have. Just based on Les’s past offenses, I bet we’ll be at least 60:40 run and Pooka may run for a gazillion yards.
-
@wissox I’d think it will at least make the Late Night official visits more fun because in the past they have taken the recruits to the football game the next day.
-
Nothing particularly against Bowen, but cleaning house means cleaning house. Clean house. A new day.
-
After hearing the litany of dirty SEC football coaches, assistant coaches, coaches wives, players, players next door neighbors, coaches best friends from the 3rd grade and so forth, i think we should just keep Beatty and be happy winning our 1 - 3 games per year for the rest of eternity…
-
No
-
@FarmerJayhawk That’s the only way to do it. Pooka to the left…Pooka to the right … shorten the game. Do the football version of the 4 corners. It might be a little ugly, but the wins will be really nice.

Pooka can’t carry it 30+ times per game all season. They need either multiple backs or some other threats, otherwise Pooka will be hurt five games into the season.
-
@justanotherfan Agreed, Pooka needs more carries than the 15 he got Saturday but not 30. He needs about 20 handoffs and about 5 passes per game. Herbert and Williams both should get carries as well.
-
@kjayhawks they are a great balance to pooka too!
-
There will be games where Pooka needs the ball 25 times and we control the tempo.
That was Beaty’s problem. He wanted to go up tempo and try to be a “Big XII Offense” instead of bleeding the clock and giving us the best chance at a win. I don’t think Les will have that issue.
-
@Kcmatt7 from everything I’ve heard about Miles is , that he is a hell of a recruiter. - -Was a pretty cool piece on him and what people were saying about his recruiting & just overall about his character and such overall - the guy sounds like a home run WAY over the left center field fence. - -former players - -talking about him how he is a players Coach . - -Talked about how he has had multiple top 10 recruiting classes. - -talked about how his worst class was like 14th in the Nation and that came in half of a recruiting cycle during a Coaching change
Would be nice to see if he can start getting some more talented plyers to come check us out - -recruit Texas really hard too on top of Louisiana - yet said he wouldn’t restrict to certain areas
Like I said yesterday would be nice if he could check back in and possibly with the 4* QB that had committed to us verbal then back off maybe get him to think again - -
-
@justanotherfan Pooka to the left …Pooka to the right…Pooka’s backup to the left…Pooka’s backup to the right… the point was we’re going to run the ball a ton.

So is it doable for Miles to sneak in a couple of 4 star guys in 2019 class? We only have 14 slots available if they are okay with keeping Mueller on. I’m a little scared with how he said the Juco level was great kansas to get help quick. I have no doubt that he is light years smarter than Weis or Beaty but that is scary with how that was a big factor in current scholarship numbers. Several former Miles players have came out and spoke very highly of him including Odell Beckham JR and Lenard Fournette. I think that could help in getting on some recruits radars.
-
@kjayhawks He said that JUCOs were for emergency gap fills.
Basically laid out his plan like this (at least how I understood it):
- Recruit in 500 mile radius.
- Any positions not landed in said radius, look for in Texas, Louisiana and California.
- Any starting positions missing after that, fill with JUCO kids. Maybe a couple a year. Not double digit numbers.

Mangino went very heavy on JuCo recruiting at the beginning of his tenure. Most of the starters on that 2003 bowl team came from the JuCo ranks. Not quite as many, but a lot of starters on the 2005 bowl team were also JuCo players. It wasn’t until the 2004 and 2005 classes where Mangino started scaling back on JuCo recruiting.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 Right and I’m not saying it can’t work but I doubt MM had the lack of numbers we currently do when he started.
-
Do we still have the coach with Louisiana ties, Hull I think his name is?
-
@wissox I think people mentioned the desire to retain only Hull, of our existing assistants, on Miles’ staff.
-
I am going to give some respect to this year’s coaching staff for taking a large, smoking heap of ash four years ago and getting it to this point. That is not easy.
Sure, we need a new staff to build on this and take it to a championship level. But Beaty, Bowen and co. did something positive for the program after several predecessors left it in ruins.
Also-- the way they have handled this situation is respectable. They have been professional and continued to do their job. They haven’t quit and they haven’t let the team quit.
-
@bskeet This them is vastly improved from year one and even a year ago. They have lacked the discipline to finish games. The big issue with Beaty outside of not finishing games is, he has not helped the Scholarship numbers in anyway. If we get a few guys that transfer out, the numbers will be less than he started with. He used way to many grey/blue shirts like with Fontana, Wallace and Feder this season. A grey/blue shirt is a transfer that counts against the next years class. He also pushed some talented guys out that weren’t playing that have moved on and are doing great. He only has 11 of his original class that had 25 players in it, only one of which is to the NFL.
-
The biggest challenge for Les Miles is to take control of the NE Kansas/NW Missouri area from a recruiting standpoint. The stretch between Warrensburg and Topeka, anchored by Kansas City, stretching north to St. Joseph and south to Ottawa or so doesn’t produce talent like DFW, Harris County (Houston) or Dade County (Miami), but it’s a starting point.
I think Miles has some ideas up his sleeve, and he has more credibility than anyone that has coached at KU, KSU or Mizzou probably ever, so he has a chance to move KU immediately to the top of the heap with local recruiting. That may not pay off with the class of 2019, but it should start paying off in 2020.
