Texas Longhorns - Friday - 8 pm - ESPN2
-
Texas has the # 2 defense according to Kenpom. Wonder how much of that is Bamba. Have to get him into foul trouble early and change the tempo
-
In the conference, Texas is second in scoring defense allowing only 60.4 ppg but it is also last in scoring offense with only 72.4 ppg. If you look at the overall conference stats, Texas is at or near the bottom in all the good stats and at or near the top the top in all the poor stats. The only good stat where they lead is blocked shots with 6.3 bpg; KU is 5th with 4.8bpg. Bamba leads the conference in blocked shots with 4.3 bpg.
-
Yeah this is a typical slog team from shaka. We have to bring one of our best offensive games to prevail in this one. I can see bamba being a big factor
-
Looks like Andrew Jones is playing tonight. Not 100% but he played really well vs ku last season

A shame KU got involved in his recruitment too late.
-
Gotta win this game in Austin Folks. Gotta win the first two contests. Then we might have a bit of league breathing room. Unless we get a power forward onto the floor to do some damage in that third game at TCU I would not wager a nickel on the outcome.
-
Bamba is a potentially elite defensive player. He’s incredibly raw offensively, but from a defensive perspective, he could quite possibly be the best defensive player in the country - he’d be the overall #1 pick in the NBA draft next June if he were anywhere near that good offensively.
-
Yup his ridiculous wingspan is just unheard of. I think he makes life really hard for the guards. We haven’t shown to be a team smart enough to put our body into bigs and make them foul us
-
Agreed. He obviously plays well against us because of that
-
@BeddieKU23 I read a UT thread and they don’t think he will be 100% with his wrist?
-

And he is just a good player in general.
-
@wrwlumpy Thank you. Texas shirt, Soviet Union shirt, “I root for the devil” shirt … heck, even an MU shirt. It all works for me. I’m easy.

Coaching?
-
I think it’s more of not having the guys with the mindset. Vick should be that guy, malik should be that guy, Marcus and Sam as well. Some of its the offense we run that’s more east west then north south. We spend a ton of time passing the ball on the perimeter for some reason
-
@BeddieKU23 they’ve been doing a better job of attacking the last couple games, especially Svi. They just need some coaching on how to not get swatted all the time, imo.
-
@HighEliteMajor true story. Any of those shirts would look great on the floor.
-
I think it would be smart to give Silvio a couple of minutes in the Texas game. Just to give him a taste of the speed of a real Big 12 game. It will help expose to Silvio just how much improvement he needs to make.
Stick him in sometime in the first half… far ahead of crunch time.
We need Silvio to get up to speed as quickly as possible. Putting him in for 2 minutes in the first half won’t blow a game for us. But it will help push him along faster. Teach him a couple of sets and a few plays, and then Devonte just keep to the script. It’s 2 friggin’ minutes!

KU will be bombing away from the outside anyway. If the 3s are falling it could be a blowout, if not a close game with Bamba being a factor.
-
Silvio cannot play, he has not been cleared by the NCAA.
-
Oh yeah… I forgot.
I read the story that Bill called the NCAA and got a computer response that they were closed until January 2nd.
I had predicted that we were working with the NCAA already to make his clearance quickly, but that didn’t happen.
-
The days it will be closed are on their website.
-
In a lot of ways, the season starts today.
Let’s go Jayhawks!
-
@RockChalkinTexas i think I saw u! Do u have a red shirt, long grey sweater on?
-
Shaka Smart in the locker room at halftime:
"Guess what?
I have a fever, and the only prescription is Mo’ Bamba.
I’M GOING TO NEED AT LEAST… 30 PERCENT MO’ BAMBA!!"
Guy’s ridiculous.

He’s really good. That stretch where he fouled Vick (uncalled) and hit a three really peeved me. Everything else I pretty much expected. The kid is a LOAD.
-
Meanwhile TTU just drilled the crap out of Nancy Drew and Faiylor. I know that must please @KirkIsMyHinrich
-
Nah man it breaks my heart to see Drew and the Bears go down.
-
Looks like zero defense is being played in Ames (STUNNER!) as KSU leads ISU 53-50 at half…
-
Drew is a fair recruiter, but his Xs and Os have always been lacking. I think he would make a great assistant some where that has an opening. Scotty is a little odd. I have no ill will, but he’s a strange dude. I’m sure if he knew me, he’d think me odd too. hehe
-
He’s a homeless man’s John Calipari.
-
@KirkIsMyHinrich I think he might just be on the hot seat if this year does not live up to the Bears average year. You know, blow the B12, and then have a decent 1-2 wins in B12 tourney and call yourselves the pretend B12 Champions.
-
The thing is Baylor’s teams could have been a lot better with the talent and length that they’ve had, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Hopefully the next coach doesn’t ignore that side of the ball.
-
Svi heating up.
That Bamba dunk was ridiculous. Not sure there are ten other people that catch that lob in that position.
The threes will probably carry KU, but Bamba has impressed me. Texas is better than I thought.
-
Looking better! Shaka sit down!
-
Rock Chalk in Austin. Stay mad, Shaka.
-
Nice win. Our leader had a great game, with 23 points … 8 dimes…and 4 rebounds. We’re SO lucky to have Devonte. My pick to click this game was Svi, and he once again had an incredible 2nd half. Very nice road win against a tough team. RCJHGKU.
-
I told you call me crazy, I said I really wasn’t worried for some reason, Bamba went off - -the zone helped there
I said we would the score would be like 85-78 - people said we would be lucky to score close to that. - - -Well Texas defense wasn’t that defense against us - - Case in point - -They have allowing 60 points a game - -we score 92, - -they was only allowing 37.4 % fg pct - -we shoot 45 % - -they had only been measly 3 pt % - -we shoot 49 % from the 3 - it’s ok – huge win nice start.
Bamba is a beast better then I thought offensively - - -But you know what - -our Big boy not bad either pretty proud of him too - – 13 points – -13 rebounds - -pretty dam good actually in a big game - - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
Oh question - - where the hell was Cunliffe - -not one second in the game? - -Is he hurt? - - -was he sick? - -didn’t hear. - -Anyone know? - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
You called it on the bombing away from the outside tonight!
-
@Jayballer54 If the refs had actually called goal tending, and if Coleman had not hit several unintended bankshots, we could’ve won by 20.
-
@Jayballer54 We now have an idea of what coach Self thinks of Sam Cunliffe at the moment. That’s all. “Coach’s decision.”
-
@Jayballer54 talk is cheap. Even from CS’s mouth.

ya heard him on his postgame. - He said Sam didn’t play, that he hadn’t done anything wrong and that people shouldn’t try and read anything into it, but just like the way the flow was going , - -I guess, I feel like there is still going to be times where we are going to need Sam. - - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@KUSTEVE Yea, the refs really let em play and bang some bodies around tonight without trying to take over the game.
And it was nice to hear Bilas gush over us, so glad Walton was doing the ucla game after and not ours.
The only thing I wish is that we had just one more stud to play with DG, Svi, Doke and Vic. Two more studs (Preston and Sousa for example) and we wouldn’t lose a game. Definitely get some solid minutes from others (and yes I’m a Lightfoot fan), but… dang, just one more real threat and it sure would make things a heckuva lot easier.
And lastly, as it’s been said before, some coaches just have other coaches number. Bill completely owns Smart. That VCU loss in the Elite 8 a few years ago must have really pissed bill off as he hasn’t lost to him since! Oh and loved the technical on the not Smart one too!
-
@HighEliteMajor Considering your oft-expressed opinions of refs in general, and of Bilas, did you have a moment of cognitive dissonance when Bilas bashed Higgins? Which dislike takes precedence here?
-
@mayjay Very nice. So, I do like Bilas as an announcer. Don’t agree with his anti-NCAA stuff, and really don’t like the general anti-CBB diatribes (wanting to always change the game/NBA preference). But even if I didn’t like him as announcer, I would still side heavily – very heavily – with Bilas. Higgins let Shaka talk a few times. But Bilas was exactly right. Refs should never pursue a coach that walks away. Refs should get suspended for that. But as long as the powers that be permit refs to be too large a part of the game, we get that. I will never understand it.
-
@HighEliteMajor If only he had listened to you, we’ve won the game…oh wait…
-
#hadto lol
-
I was watching the game with friends and all of us though a couple of the Bamba blocks were goal tending; did anyone else saw it the same way?
-
Didn’t realize Higgins was reffing tonight. That surprises me considering how much KU got away with on defense tonight. It’s usually the other way around with him, but I’m not surprised though that he made himself the center of attention since that’s his typical MO for games.
