  @ralster. My other BIG issue (personally) with a dumbed-down playbook, is that it doesn’t speak well for the current roster’s intelligence level, if they cannot execute what '08 and '12 could execute. 2008 and 2012 were teams loaded with upper class men throughout the rotation and both had senior PG’s who multi year starters running the show. The past 2 years have been teams with a lot of freshmen and sophomores in the rotation and had sophomore PG’s in their first year of starting. Nobody should’ve realistically expected the past two teams to be able to run the more complex sets that the 2008 and 2012 teams could because the experience just wasn’t there. The 2015-16 team will be mostly upper classmen in the rotation with a multi year starting PG like the 2008 and 2012 teams. This team is also going to get over a month of unlimited practice in the summer with all be one player (Greene) able to practice for about 3 weeks before they leave for South Korea. Do not underestimate just how huge those practices will be for this team, especially with someone the caliber of Nic Moore running the second team against the starters. This is a year (barring injuries) that anything short of a Final Four will be a huge disappointment unlike the past two years.

You made a good point about the guys getting a reduction in strength conditioning this summer. Guys may do some weight during the season, but not much. The big strength developmental push is in the off-season. It is too easy to throw off shooting touches and have some injuries or sore muscles that would hurt guys’ performances in games if they were hitting it hard during the season.

  I never was really sure if the NCAA kept Cliff from playing or was it Coach Self because he felt there would be 8 games vacated if Cliff played in them. There was just two much riding on the chances that this would turn bad at the time. Conference wins and NCAA tournament wins could have been vacated. I do feel Cliff was improving and that he would have played much more in those 8 games than he did at the first of the year. We needed him and that is what made it so frustrating. We needed those other 5 fouls and rebounding and he needed those last 8 games to show he belong in the NBA, but we will never know how it would have turned out just like the year before without Embed. Coach Self is a master at team development and his teams don’t usually shine until the end of the season because he is always teaching and training and developing his players for improvement. Sometimes people get injured or just ware out. but sometimes they step it (TT) up and decide this is the time, it’s either now or never and sometimes they just don’t understand it is up to them not their momma or anyone else. Some people figure it out early because they have parents that help them along the way and some people don’t figure it out till later in life because they just don’t have the mentors or they think they don’t have to listen to mentors because they did not have the positive parenting that enables success. The world is full of achievers and non-achievers, extroverts and introverts, inherited traits and learned behavior. I’m not sure we can spend our time trying to figure out what actually transpired with Cliff because there may be too many variables in his life that any Coach or mentor can have a positive affect on. Frank has a passion, and a toughness that inspires even me at 65 years old. I hope it translates into the league someday.

  Kelly Oubre made the right decision. He has the maturity to know that he’s not going to dominate the NBA game right away. You do not get better by playing against players that are at best the same talent level as you and the vast majority are nowhere near as good as you. You get better by playing against players that are better than you that force you to up your game. Chad Ford’s mock is the lowest I’ve seen Oubre’s name in the draft, (Oubre’s name falls anywhere from 11-17 on the most credible sites) so there’s no guarantee he goes that low.

I think the question should be less about why don’t teams use it versus why did they ever cut it out of their plans in the first place! Why would any team cut out a big chunk of potential? Why would any team put limitations on their offense? Stats don’t always tell a story. You can hire a statistician and he’ll tell you do nothing but pump 3s and stuff it under the rim when it is there. Nothing else. There is a reason why you’ll probably never find a successful coach who was previously a statistician. Because the game is a lot more than numbers. If you are willing to exploit every inch of the offensive side of basketball you should be helping it in its entirety. Start taking parts of it away and you burden what you have left. Take away mid-range and defenses no longer have to worry about it and can just focus on shutting down the 3… so they can overplay the 3 and disregard the drive. Most perimeter drives don’t end right at the rim. Mid range game is a skill that isn’t being taught or focused on any longer. Every player on the court is outside practicing their 3s. And in that sense, I’m with Self in calling it “fools gold” because eventually it will catch up to you. It is hard to stay consistent at 3, especially when defenses start playing you to stop the 3. Attack from every spot on the floor and you are running your best offense possible, and you will keep defenses honest!

  @brooksmd I looked up our team stats, and our 12.8 turnovers a game last year was good for a tie for 201st in Div 1, while Wisky, Virginia, the Shlockers, are all top 10 in least turnovers. Experience will help that number this year, but anybody we can get that values the basketball, can pass and dribble effectively, and has shown ability to create his own shot, and can penetrate has to find minutes in our program. I’m thinking Vick’s quickness will be a great asset on the defensive end as well. Maybe we have someone now who can stop guards from penetrating so easily.

  I think the WUG will be great preparation for the season and give us a leg up, especially early on in the season much like it did for UK. They had like 8 or 9 games against professional teams under their belt before we played them. This experience may lead to us going deeper in March and we will have good upperclassmen leadership who has experienced back to back season of early tourney exits and may be the disappointment we needed to cut down the nets the first weekend in April.

  @justanotherfan I don’t know. This whole nixing the midrange jump shots just doesn’t seem right to me. I know you and other come up with all these reasons why it should go away. However I’m man of senses. I see what I see, hear what I hear, and so on. Roy teams shot a lot of midrange jumpers. Woodberry was always roaming that area between the paint and three land. The twins used to kill teams with their mid range jump shots. I little spin, then step back nothing but net. Not sure why so many just want to dismiss the midrange shot. It’s like playing one handed basketball. Telling the other team, hey see all this area. No need to defend this area because the mid-range is pointless?
