207-9; 12 Straight Big 12 Titles
Before we start focusing on the basketball week ahead (3 more games-6 games in 2 weeks; who made this schedule?) or posting more about recent and possible future recruits, it’s important to stop and appreciate what we have at KU. Bill Self. I remember the let down when Roy Williams finally took the NC job. I worried that our basketball success would drop a couple of notches, but the exact opposite happened. Coach Self raised the already high profile Coach Williams brought to KU to the top tier nationally and made us the team to beat each year. Thank you, thank you Bill Self. RCJH

Vick Has Earned The Start
I love Svi on offense, at least some of the time. Earlier in the season when we first saw Svi driving to the rim a la Wiggs, I thought he was going to be a difference maker on offense for this team. But, we may no longer tolerate his defensive ineptness. Vick needs to return to the starting lineup. Then, bring Svi in for offense as a spot up shooter and occasional penetrator, similar to the way Brannen Greene was used last year.
I know Svi is our fourth leading scorer at 10/game in 28 minutes. But, against Baylor, Svi’s play created dissention on the floor. Vick’s energy and better defense necessitates the promotion. Svi’s contributions have been on the decline recently, whereas Vick’s play off the bench has provided much needed offense at critical times and many have attributed our last two victories to Vick’s efforts. Reward the slashing Mr. Vick and use Svi as an offensive hammer off the bench.

Mason's Baylor Line Must Be Repeated
I’m still enjoying the bounty of information from the Baylor box score. My goodness Frank had a great line: 39 min, 7-12 FG, 1-3 3PT, 8-8 FTs, 2 Rbs, 8 Ast, 2 Stl, 1 TO and 23 Pts. What a special player we have in Frank Mason.

Emporia State EXI
Thank goodness we now have actual dribbling, shooting and defending to talk about. I still like playing the Kansas colleges; Emporia State has players from Burlington, Osage City, Spring Hill, Bonner Springs and Tonganoxie. I think it’s great that Kansas kids get to play in Allen Fieldhouse.
And, Emporia State brings a new coach to the game. Craig Doty just got hired in April and gets to play the Jayhawks as his first game for Emporia. Welcome aboard Coach. Good luck.
KU starters: Dok, Dedric, Grimes and… . I say Vick and Moore. Both because they’ve been in the program and know how KU operates. Rock Chalk.
-
RE: We Out Toughed Them
Would someone please put together a video of Dok’s 5 fouls during the Tennessee game and add to it the hacking that goes on every time Dok gets the ball In the paint? There is a terrible double standard for foul calling against Dok-at least in my memory of watching the game live. I haven’t watched the game a second time, so maybe my recollection would change. I really liked the passion Dok showed after he fouled out. During the OT timeouts, Dok was shouting encouragement to Dedric. Dok wants to win. I like it.

RE: Random thoughts as we end another regular season...
My random thought is how much I love the tournament settings and process. When I saw KU plays at 1:30 on Thursday, I began rearranging my schedule and deciding what types of beer I need in the office frig for the people in my building who will certainly drop in to catch a bit of the game. Rock Chalk, baby.

Reviewing the Baylor W
Our trio of Jackson, Mason and Graham just refuse to lose. What a great win. Despite missing clutch free throws down the stretch, our guys found a way to win. It’s not always pretty, but Coleby and Lightfoot gave us some valuable minutes.
I thought Josh should have been in the paint more when Baylor had it’s zone set and we were running our half court offense. When Josh got the ball in the paint, he was unstoppable. I thought that too often he was hanging around on the wing instead of flashing through the lane for the guards to feed. But, I feel bad criticizing his game at all when he just led us to our most important win of the year.
I give a lot of credit to the Baylor players and Coach Drew for playing damn well at Allen. If our trio of unstoppables hadn’t played their best, Baylor would be leading the Big 12 now.

RE: Oregon Matchups
As I was looking at the matchups with Oregon, I find that my analysis has shifted and I can’t help it. How are the Ducks going to stop the Jayhawk Juggernaut? How do you stop Mason, Graham, Jackson, and now Vick and Svi? Whatcha got, Ducks? This special team is playing with more energy and athleticism than any other Jayhawk team. And Oh Yea, they are having a blast. The fun they are having leads to more positive plays. How about that goofy play at the end of the first half where we got a runout dunk with an assist from the ref. Fun, Fun, Fun. RCJH

RE: Who do we want? Auburn or Clemson?
This is exactly why the NCAA Tournament is so captivating if my team is still playing: I will watch parts of Clemson/Auburn to gauge the competition; KState/UMBC to cheer a home state team and follow this year’s Cinderella; WVirg/Marshall to cheer for the Big 12 and follow the Marshall story line and TXAM/NC to root against Ole Roy. Hey, I’m still having fun and enjoying the tournament after the first weekend. RCJH

RE: SILVIO IS FREE
When I heard the NCAA decision for Silvio, my first thought wasn’t the benefit to next year’s team, but how amazing that Silvio patiently waited all these months and stuck by his commitment to his college education and KU. I still remember the pride I felt when Silvio told his handlers he wanted to go to KU, not Maryland. Silvio sat on the bench all last year and endured all the negative attention with poise and class. Way to go Silvio. I hope to be able to shake your hand sometime soon.

2,357 Wins
At least once a month I’m compelled to look at the list of NCAA members with the most basketball wins. What a great program, with such a great tradition and history. I can’t wait for this season to start on November 7.

RE: Red Raiders Part 3 Game Thread Zach SZN Forreal
David McCormick was absolutely a beast in the tournament. Hacked by 2 and 3 guys everytime he had the ball in the paint. He maintained his composure and just scored the ball. RC Big Dave.

RE: Winning Strategy to Bring Home a Trophy...
I too appreciate Wilson’s dogged determination. I just wish all the starters played with Wilson’s determination. Remy’s quick trigger on offense is fine when he scores, but several times a game he shoots too quickly. But I’ll take the bad with the good from Remy the rest of the way. KU is only continuing to play because Remy is willing to shoot when our other guards have their heads in the sand.

RE: Huggins Retires
Oh no! Now Coach Huggins says he never retired and still wants to coach WV. At 69 and with another DUI pending, it sure seemed like the purported retirement was in everyone’s best interest. But noooooooooo, here we go with the George Costanza storyline where George returned to work pretending he didn’t get mad and quit his job. Maybe, this is just an effort to gain some additional compensation. We will see.

Parker impressed me mon. night. He also was stepping up as a leader. Quite a few had 5 boards. Juan 4.
Parker actually didn’t look that ba. I realize you have to look at the competition BUT I think he can help spell Hunter for some minutes anyways
I was really surprised to see Coach returning to his early high low offense with Hunter at the FT line and Parker down low. Parker showed some athleticism on several plays. Parker is just getting started at KU; I don’t understand posters who have already given up on him ever helping KU. I’m an older brother and I’ve always had more dog than my younger brother. Let’s just sit back and see if big brother, Parker has more dog than his younger brother.

Just Beat Duke, OK!
The home game against Duke presents a great opportunity for KU football to fully establish itself as a legitimate football program. Duke looks a lot like KU with a dual threat QB. Here are the QB stats:
Our guy, the Best QB around, passing 47/70 67%, 566yds, 7 TDs, 1 INT; rushing 27/237yds, 3TDs;
Riley Leonard, #13, So, 6’4" 212lbs. passing 48/66 73%, 723 yds, 5TDs, 2 INT; rushing 22/147yds, 2TDs
Like KU, Duke doesn’t rely on one main running back. KU definitely appears to have the edge rushing the ball. Neal 28/204 yds. 4TDs and Hishaw 26/170yds, 4TDs. For Duke, Junior RB Coleman #22, 29/177yds, 3TDs and Junior Waters, #7, 25/174yds, 2TDs.
We have a long week ahead of this epic game. I’m confident KU fans will show up to support our 3-0 Hawks.

RE: Blessing In Disguise
@ParisHawk The purpose of the Kansas domestic violence statute is to stop, at least for a few hours, a violent confrontation between domestic partners. Any law enforcement officer will tell you that many times they are called upon to respond to the same couple still fighting over a long period of time. The Kansas statute was enacted to put one or both of the combatants in jail for a few hours to stop the fight if there is evidence of a battery. After an arrest, the accused’s bond imposes a condition of no contact with the other person for 48 or 72 hours. The whole point is to get fighting couples apart to cool off and perhaps sober up so no one gets hurt. Lawrence PD didn’t have to arrest Bragg under the strict terms of the statute, but these incidents are so routine to any beat cop, that someone always gets arrested. It might not be right, but it’s the easiest way to stop the conflict and insure no one gets further hurt. Of course, Bragg and the young woman had already parted by the time law enforcement got involved, so the prospect of further problems was over. The accounts I’ve read indicate Bragg was arrested 5 hours after the incident in the stairwell and the young woman was contacted half a day later. Clearly, no arrests should have been made and only citations issued.
With our Mr. Bragg, I’m sure all the questions will never be answered. I’m also sure, Carlton just wants to move on and not dig into the details any further. Lessons were learned. The correct outcome has been achieved after the lawyers, who deal with these incidents every day looked at the facts and determined who was at fault. That goodness for the video or it would have been Bragg’s version against the version of the young lady. That would have taken weeks to resolve.

#13 Is Closer, But What About Those Bears?
With every victory, the next game gets more important. Really, unbearably important. And there is no more important game for us to date than Baylor on Saturday. Our guys are finding ways to win, but Baylor looms, especially that ridiculous front line of Motley and Lual-Acuil. Lecomte will likely play his best game of the year against us. So will Wainwright.
I heard coach talking this week about Frank’s offense. Coach said with Frank making 50% of his 3’s, he wants Frank to shoot more. Coach also mentioned teams are doubling Frank, so other players have to recognize the double team and get open. This will be a game where Landen may finally make his mark as an inside scorer. Like Perry, Landen struggles against taller defenders. I still think it’s a lack of confidence. Imagine if Landen had Frank’s confidence. Double, double from Landen, 20 from Frank and Josh, and we cruise to number thirteen. RCJH

RE: Guess we aren't the only one's
I’m still bothered by the way Lawrence law enforcement handled Devonte’s failure to appear on the traffic charge. If I was Coach Self, I would set a meeting with the Lawrence PD, who presumably executed the traffic warrant. All the warrant office had to do was contact someone on the coaching staff or athletic department if Devonte wasn’t responding to direct efforts to get him to court. This isn’t giving him special treatment; it’s the best way to utilize the city’s resources. I’ve dealt with several different warrant offices, all of whom worked with me to surrender a client to the court for the most routine type of traffic hearing instead of wasting an officer’s time to arrest and book someone on one of the most minor offenses that may be charged. Lawrence PD’s actions right after the TCU game smack of grandstanding and were completely unnecessary. If Devonte was my player or my client or my son, I’d have a load of verbal buckshot ready for the supervisor of the warrant office. And probably his superior too.

RE: Latest Scuttlebutt on DaSousa Please
I don’t know the answers to your questions, but I want to go on record that Silvio’s improvement from January to March was the greatest level of improvement I’ve seen for any KU player. Amazing really, when you think about a high school senior joining a top 5 team mid-season and being able to contribute high quality minutes during the tournament. RCJH

KU Still Number 2 in All-Time Wins
Did you miss it? Kentucky started the season with 1903 wins compared to KU’s 1899. With KU 6-1 and Kentucky 1-3, for now KU has the most overall wins. KU has 1905 wins to UK’s 1904. RC

RE: 2022-23 stats-PER, Kenpom etc
Yeah, yeah, yeah, numbers, numbers, numbers, blah, blah, blah; when a Duke player had an open court for a layup/dunk in the first half, I saw the headband on a KU player streaking down court for a the terrific block that was followed by a second block. Of course that was our #3, Dejuan Harris starting that defensive play and not giving one inch to a Duke player. That shows why Dejuan is on the court; the rest is just blah, blah, blah.

@drgnslayr said in KU vs. The Indiana Hoosiers Saturday 11AM This is a BIG GAME!!!:
Amazing how our 5-spot looks so good now that we are getting into a real offense. And for every play we run that finishes with a KJ dunk… he just gets that much more pumped up and kickin’ arse!
Yes… we look fast and a big part of that is fast ball movement!
This team learns fast and the sky is the limit this year with this team! Might end up being even better than last year’s team! Might…
Depth is still an issue as we basically only went 7 deep in a game that wasn’t particularly close. Especially when the announcers were talking about Self developing the depth on the bench a bit and to not see it happen in a game that wasn’t particularly close is concerning. Rice should’ve played some more today, especially with Wilson struggling with his shooting today and it would’ve been nice to see Yesufu get some more minutes today as well. It looks like the back up 5 spot is still going to be by committee based on match ups.
This would be my one gripe from the game today as this was KU’s most complete game so far this season.
Bobby and Zuby got a bunch of minutes today. 21 bench pts is a big improvement.

RE: Huggins Retires
I’ll sure miss Huggy. Not so much recently, but 5 years ago the defense his teams played against KU was outstanding; I hated to play them in Morgantown. My blood pressure still shoots through the roof when I remember that game where the WV guard was allowed to drive from outside the arc for a winning layup without dribbling once. Oh my, those Morgantown losses hurt. Huggy’s problems and Bill’s health issues are reminders of the ridiculous stress these coaches suffer. I wish Huggy could have enjoyed a farewell season where opposing teams and fans showed their respect and appreciation for a job well done.

RE: Ten Random thoughts on Siena
Landen Lucas is doing fine and will be an important contributor to this team. Opposing teams, especially Indiana are collapsing on him every time he gets the ball. I remember a point in the Indiana game when Landen got the ball in the paint and was surrounded by four Hoosiers. He looked like a man trapped in a well. When our guards start hitting some 3’s and defenses are forced to focus on other KU players on offense, Landen will get his 10-12 points and 10 rebounds. Our guards have open 3’s all the time, but aren’t converting yet. Right now, the defensive schemes are focusing on Landen like defenses did last year with Perry.
Our 3 point defense is the same approach we’ve seen in year’s past: defend from inside the 3 point line and see if the other team hits their shots. No one chased Wright until the middle of the second half. We just let him launch uncontested 3’s until he got too tired to hit them. I guess that’s a defensive strategy. Siena has a really nice team, with the outside/inside play of Wright and Ogunyemi. This was a good game for us; a win we may learn from.

Destroy Denver
Is it to much to hope for KU and KC to win on the same weekend? Denver has got to know their season is on the line today. Tomahawk Chop Time.

Tony Sands, June Henley and Now Pooka Williams
I was in the eastside stands when Tony Sands set the single game rushing record against a hapless Missouri team. I yelled until my voice was gone for Juuuuuuuun! Now, I just hope Coach Miles can keep Pooka on the team.
Our Oline actually looked competent most of the time against OU. But for some dumb mistakes, we had a chance to upset OU. That’s really enough to get me back to Memorial Stadium. I really hope to be yelling for Pooka next season. Rock Chalk.

RE: Thoughts on todays game
The best development from the Nebraska game was our rock, Landen Lucas playing like last year: 5/5, 2/2, and 7rbs all in 19 minutes. The officiating stayed in the background where it’s supposed to be, rather than being the most notable element of the game like it was in earlier games. Perhaps that’s the reason for his improved play. But, I think Landen’s back and will become a bigger part of our offense. Start Landen against Davidson, coach.
A close second best part of the Nebraska game for me was Svi’s aggressive play. Finally, I saw more than just a feet set, three point shooter; he drove the ball to the rim and is now a dual threat. I finally saw the athleticism that many of you have written about. Svi"s play should earned him more playing time and I say start him over Vick. RCJH

RE: Beat WVU
It may be just one win. Yes, KU could lose Daniels and tank the rest of the season. But, when I look at the usually difficult to stomach top 130 by CBS Sports, KU moved up 42 positions to #56. Imagine that, Number 56 in the country. A competitive football team. KU has hovered above the 100 rank for years. Thank you Coach Leipold and staff. Thank you.

KU Playing Small?
Everyone talks about KU playing small, even coach Self. How is our Davidson starting line up small when we started a 7 footer at the 5 and two 6’8’’ players? Isn’t small either the wrong word or just poor terminology for a team using really, really athletic 6’8’’ players who can handle the ball and shoot from the outside like traditional guards, but also bang in the paint with their front court height? We really are seeing a number of multi-skilled 6’8’’ players around the country, including Jackson, Svi and Lightfoot. And soon, Billy Preston will arrive; another multi-skilled “small” player. Once upon a time, Magic Johnson was thought to be a rare athlete, but now we see a number of players with similar size and combination skills throughout the country.
When I hear the term playing small, I think of Fred Hoiberg’s Iowa State offense that had four players beyond the arc and one player in the paint. George Niang was another multi-skilled 6’8’’ guy. If I saw him at the local Costco, I don’t think I would call him small.
As a true small myself, I wonder if 6 feet will soon become too short to play D1 ball. Global warming may be hotly disputed in our society, but no one may dispute that many tall players are changing the face of basketball because they’re developing ball handling and shooting skills like true smalls. Just something to ponder on a Monday. Merry Christmas all.

Kansas Offensive Line Appreciation Thread
So much of this year’s success is directly related to the superior play of our OL that I wanted to name these athletes and start the discussion. I was disappointed that I couldn’t find a current depth chart for our Jayhawks. The same players have started all three games and I’ll appreciate everyone’s contributions to identify and praise the rest of our linemen, who are equally responsible for our 3-0 start.
LT #68 Earl Bostwick, Jr. Super Senior, 6’6", 310, Barnwell SC;
LG #67 Dominick Puni, RS-Senior, 6’5, 315, St Charles MO;
C #50 Mike Novitsky, RS-Senior, 6’5", 300, Victor NY;
RG #54 Michael Ford,Jr RS-So, 6’3", 300, Homewood IL;
RT #77 Bryce Cabeldue RS-So, 6’6", 305, Clovis NMNo sacks through 3 games. We have to acknowledge Coach Scott Fuchs for putting this great offensive line on the field. Goodness, how many years have KU fans suffered through poor offensive line play. Now, I can’t wait for our players to manhandle and dominate the Blue Devil defense. It’s almost October and for the first time in many years I can’t wait for Saturday game time.

RE: Wins like these win championships
No one is talking about the missed free throws at the end of the game. I know it doesn’t do any good to talk or complain about the misses. But, dang it guys: D1 athletes make free throws. Come on now.

RE: Open as a 18 1/2 point dog to Texas
My hope for today’s game is that KU finishes without any key injuries and plays well on both sides of the ball. Texas better bring its A game or KU may upset them again. Oh boy would I like to send Texas to the SEC with another KU loss. RC baby

Jayhawk Bench Beats OSU
Looking at the OSU box score again, the OSU guards did what they had to do to win the game. I’m disappointed we didn’t slow them down more. Carroll, 27 pts., Evans,22, and Forte,13 combined for 62 points. Our starting guards combined for 57 points, 60 if you add in Svi’s 3. Our 56% (vs. OSU’s 42%) shooting on the road was just outstanding. The bigs on both teams were comparable in scoring. It’s easy to see, that our bench scoring 20 points versus OSU’s 7 accounts for the difference in the game. Bragg and Vick had more combined minutes than the OSU bench, but points are points and our bench players won this game.
-
RE: This and that from a KU victory
AP has KU ranked at #23. I wasn’t expecting that
-
RE: this blows!
The Big 12 certainly wasn’t guarding KU during the Oregon game and forcing us to shoot 35% from the field. Come on now: if a team shoots 35%, 21/60 and 20%, 5/25 from 3, it just isn’t going to win an Elite Eight game. Oregon shot 51% from the field on 29/57 and 44% from 3, 11/25. Let’s acknowledge our guys had a poor shooting night and just move on. This is what happens in a one and done tournament. I didn’t even think our poor shooting was attributable to good defense. It just wasn’t our night. I do think Josh’s early fouls contributed to our lack of offensive rhythm. Oregon played well; Ku didn’t.
And oh yea, I like the streak.

KU Football is Now Relevant. Take the Next Step Tonight.
Continuing the discussion that Jballer started in the News Feeds, I’m enjoying the positive attention that KU football is getting: “Jason Bean is faster on the field than Tyreek Hill.” I love it. Like Texas-Hawk 10 points out, it’s time for Lance and the team to take the next step and win the road games. That starts tonight with IState. If KU can eliminate the TOs, it will do just fine against an IState team that has enjoyed a very weak Big 12 schedule. Tied for first in the Big 12; give me a break. I can’t believe we are underdogs tonight. The Homecoming win over the See You Laters was great. Being bowl eligible again is great. Now, let’s beat the Cyclones and ruin their homecoming festivities. Come on Lance and Andy, win with this game with solid play and no failed, silly trick plays.
