He can score but anyone that learned defense playing for Fran is a lost cause coming to KU

RE: Transfer Rumblings
I do think he and his staff need to really focus on what the portal can get them and make adjustments to recruiting portal players.
Never should there be only 1 ball handler on the team.
Never should you have only 1 reserve big.
Never take a transfer with questionable character, ever. Vet it, get it right.

RE: Transfer Rumblings
He can shoot. 3/4 of our lineup may still not know how to. Had 19 against Iowa St in the tournament. Can’t imagine he’s not good enough. We just had a bench full of guys that couldn’t do jack.

RE: 2024 Portal Madness Thread
No he won’t have to sit anymore unless they change the rules again. Back in December a court put a temporary stay to the 2-time transfer ruling. Some 2 time transfer guys started playing immediately. Then the NCAA said its allowable through the rest of the season. Everyone is working under the assumption now it won’t be an issue next year either.

RE: 2024 Portal Madness Thread
Some interesting names in today.
2nd leading scorer from New Mexico- Jamal Mashburn Jr.
Oklahoma’s Otega Oweh, talented athletic guard.
South Carolina’s leading scorer Meechie Johnson.
Ha, Marcus Adams Jr onto his potential 4th team in a year. Briefly at KU, Gonzaga, then BYU. Back in the Portal

RE: Transfer Rumblings
12 3’s from 25 ft and deeper. Really good shooter, not a great athlete… Always the give and take

RE: Transfer Rumblings
Until recently believe it’s illegal for coaches and the school to be involved in the $ but with the NCAA continuing to be shut down from getting involved in that business it may be something that a coach can have some influence on going forward.

RE: Elmarko
There was talk that Elmarko was a better practice player then in games. It was evident from most of his play this year he was not ready for this level, mentally. Who knows if they expected him to start or play a large role before the season but as we know the Morris situation forced their hand. In any case the highly ranked and highly touted player coming in did not live up to expectations. Most of us expected to see some version of why he was highly ranked and we saw far and few evidence to back it up. His rise from unranked prospect to top tier might have been a mis-eval but there was a lot of positives said about him from evaluators to coaches so how did everyone miss the boat?
I hate to use absolutes with freshman because an offseason to reflect and start over in this program has led to far more players improving then not but I have my doubts like many on him. It’s not just the mental mistakes on both sides, it’s the lack of skill that worries me most. Did anyone ever feel comfortable with him dribbling the ball or having to make a pass? It was cringe.
After a full season he could not be trusted to run simple plays at lead guard or defend opposing guards from getting anything they wanted. Self could not depend on him to do anything Juan does, leaving him no choice but to play him at ‘SG’ which we saw didn’t work either. When you don’t have the skills to play either backcourt position what do you do?
I’m guessing the coaches know more about his mental approach and ability to play at this level but I do think it’s a hard question they must ask.
Perhaps all of this is just segwaying into the bigger issue about development at the HS and prep level due to the challenges covid presented among other development issues. AAU ball is a joke, kids are reclassifying at record pace every year, there are lots of players who transfer multiple times in High School now, another recent phenomenon. That lost year for so many set the sport back more then we can measure. The lost year changed so much of how things were done.
On the other side it also left grown men in the game when before it was rare to see guys over 22 still playing. Now you got 5th and 6th year guys still hooping with 18 year olds creating this big gap in physical and mental development. I think that’s negatively shaped our opinions of younger players because nobody is winning right now with a young roster. “Stay Old” is the new model coaches are following. It’s hard to have patience now when everything is being catered to the now

RE: Elmarko
The talent evaluators all knew Elmarko wasn’t a finished product coming out (think a raw big with oodles of potential but not the consistency). His growth in the last 2 years of HS, athleticism and growing playmaking skills got him ranked where he was because of what they thought he’d become at KU.
Elmarko has only been playing basketball 5/6 years so he’s behind.
After a year here, he’s further behind then anyone could imagine. Been hit or miss with top ranked guards lately I’d say. Dotson came prepared to handle it.

RE: 2024 Portal Madness Thread
Comes from P5 program, developed 3 years, started 2 straight years. Potential NBA prospect if the cards fit down the line. Good positional size, videos I’ve seen made his standing reach look more Kevin then KJ. Athletic enough to finish above the rim in transition & around the rim on cuts/plays at the basket. One of the top defenders in the Pac-12, fills the stat sheet a lot like Kevin did (4+ boards, 3 assists). 3-point shot is okay/not great % wise, shot 36% as a Soph. I see some step backs, stopping and shooting in transition, pull-ups. His mechanics are better then Kev that took all day to get into his shot.
There’s rumor a Big-12 program offered him an NIL deal already (could be KU, I don’t know).
This is one that seems to fit a lot of boxes Self looks for. Wing size, defends, can make plays at all 3 levels. I’ve also seen that Kobe was not the best fit at USC and perhaps he’d see growth in a new system like Kevin did here.
I see things to like and proven production. Replacing what Kev gave us won’t be easy. I think we need to throw numbers at our issues in the backcourt.

RE: 2023-2024 Statistics
How cliché, 3 former Hawks Tyon-Grant Foster, Isaac McBride and Tristan Enaruna all finished tied for 36th nationally in scoring at 19.8ppg.
-
RE: 2024 Portal Madness Thread
KU has reached out to Rutgers big transfer Cliff Omoruyi who avg 10, 8 and nearly 3 blocks per game, good for 3rd nationally. Not a good FT shooter and fouls a lot.

RE: Zigging the Zags
Should have known today wasn’t going to be fun when I woke up to 4 inches of snow after nothing for months. Followed by hail, sleet and freezing rain back to snow. Yikes
