Lawson Family

@BShark Lawson is the younger brother correct? - -2019? - -And they also have a cousin don’t they maybe possibly? - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@jayballer54 Yeah. The cousin lives elsewhere but the brothers would move with the dad and dominate HS ball here. Also you have to imagine it would all but seal them coming to KU.
-
If this redshirt transfer season goes well, we set ourselves up a nice little recruiting pipeline. In theory we could have 4 from the Lawson family on one team right? Providing Dedric doesn’t turn pro after his first year here and they are as tight with their cousin as a lot of people believe.

Jeffries has a KU offer. All the way back from last July actually. Top 10 prospect.
And yeah in theory KU could have 4 at once on the roster.
KU has sooo many ins for the 2019 class. I really like Marcedus Leech but he might be an odd man out.

I’ll toss this out … I first mentioned it with the Morris twins. I generally don’t like the idea of family members as being key pieces. If something goes wrong, we could be left with some big holes. You have a family that already transferred once. It certainly is a cautionary consideration.
-
Yeah if it goes sideways in the middle of the season they are playing it could create a bad situation where KU already took Chandler and their cousin and targets like Leech and Hurt went elsewhere. Hopefully not.

@BShark Brothers? - -I thought they only had one ? – Ya if they move to Lawrence for sure won’t hurt. Plus you would think they have an in road with the cousin who is suppose to be pretty good too. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
-
@HighEliteMajor The Memphis situation blew up because of a coaching change. If Pastner was still at Memphis, so are the Lawson’s. Don’t think there’s much risk of the situation turning south here.

The Plumlees worked out ok for Duke. Hopefully this can work out as well for KU.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 That’s kind of my point. Something “blew up” and two players are gone. We do not know the future. I’m sure Memphis was quite comfortable with them, too. When you put more eggs in one basket, the risk increases.
-
If I understand correctly, The father was an assistant coach under Pastner and was demoted to director of Player Personnel, a non-coaching position under Tubby; salary cut in half???
-
@JayHawkFanToo the “demotion” actually resulted in a salary increase.
-
@RockkChalkk @HighEliteMajor @JayHawkFanToo What blew up is the AD promised the father he could keep the ass’t coaching job after Pastner left, but Tubby brought in his own staff and demoted him to a job where he was not allowed to coach his kids at all. Created a huge mistrust issue. The dad had won a state HS championship, so he has legit coaching experience. Salary was not an issue.
-
I saw that information but it really does not add up since two of the 3 current assistants are making well over $200K and the third $180K. Hard to believe he was making only $100K.
-
@HighEliteMajor The situation blew up because of a coaching change. Do you forsee a coaching change in the next few years because I don’t see anything that indicates Self is retiring or dealing with any serious health risks.
-
@JayHawkFanToo I thought so too, but it is on the state website usually so most reports are pretty factual.

Upside for Lawsons and KU: Franchise family with hoops knowledgeable dad/uncle, talented players quite capable of playing top level Div. 1 ball for one of premier coaches in the nation. Downside: Possible mayhem if dad interferes with coaching, or if one or more of the offspring should become an uncoachable hard head or social misfit. That recent “F…k Tubby” stuff broadcast on social media by Son #2 was disconcerting, esp. coming to light in conjunction with transfer commitment to Kansas. Evidently, apologies were quickly forthcoming and that issue died down; but it left a questionable odor. Last season at Memphis must have been a real trial for the Lawson family, as incoming Coach Smith opted to bring his own son aboard as an assistant, demoting Keelon Lawson to a non-coaching position after he had spent two years as an assistant to former Coach Pastner. I’m hoping it all works out in optimal fashion. These recruits could become a real coup for Bill Self and the program.
-
@mayjay I think the clincher was Tubby’s son was brought in on his coaching staff, and the Lawsons viewed it as nepotism. Maybe a little bit ironic, but it worked out well for us.
-
I didn’t know the son of Tubby part. Seems like the big issue was the Ath Director’s premature and ill-considered promise. Tubby should certainly have the right to choose his own staff.
-
@Mayjay And in doing so in an undipolmatic fashion, Tubby sent his best players down the road.
-
Six players have transferred out of Memphis and there is a lot of talk on whether Tubby was the right hire for the program. Smith is still milking the few good seasons he had at UK, mostly with Pitino players. His two stops after UK were nothing to write home about. Orlando “Tubby” Smith is very overrated in my opinion.
-
Elite eight, here we come!
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 You’re right, the only thing that can cause a blow up is a coaching change.
-
@JayHawkFanToo He’s been riding the gravy train. Let’s put it this way- he will never be mistaken for an “energy guy”. BUT, he was one hell of a coach back when he was at Tulsa…many moons ago.
