Visiting the Octogon....Advice welcome

  • Tomorrow my quest to visit every Big 12 arena to see the Hawks takes me to purple pussicat land. Any advice from the bucketeers? Should I wear blue or go neutral (my Germanic stubbornness and competive nature has me leaning blue)? What sign should I make? Any scenic spots to visit, such as a feed lot? Feel free to have fun with this advice column.

I probably should not say this, but in my seven previous conference visits, I have yet to see the Hawks lose on the road. They cannot fail me now at KSU of all places.

Post script: after KSU all I have left is Tech and OU. WV does not really count and their fans are even weirder than the KState fans so I’m skipping Morgantown.

  • @Fightsongwriter How about the classic…“Pound the fertilizer out of Silo Tech” sign. No…probably not a good idea in their place. Oh well… maybe when the fans do that bobbing back and forth thing, you can see a couple of them smack their coconuts together…

  • @Fightsongwriter be careful. They will refer to Svi’ walk, 👣 and all the 💩 From the ⭐️ Plus the famous chant! I hope there will be no children w/you!

  • I brought my son to OSU, tcu, TX with no issues. Not tomorrow tho. Taking a client who is a stater but hes cool 😎

  • I think you should go see wvu, simply because its non-midwest, whole different part of country. I’d be curious about the hillbilly thing. Huggins always has them as top10-20 team.

I’d also be curious your take comparing ksu+isu fans with the rest of the BigXII?

  • Careful when looking them in the eyes. They aren’t used to that and may act strangely.

  • @ralster I think you should go w/him!

  • @ralster Perhaps a bucketeers field trip to WV. Safety in numbers!

  • West Virginia is in an absolutely beautiful part of the country. It needs to be on your list to visit at some point.

If I were you, I’d skip Lubbock as well. A total arm pit of a town and home to one of the worst days I ever experienced during my college years.

  • @tis4tim A bit hard to get to for sure, but I’m committed now. Plus tickets should be all of $5 bucks.

  • @tis4tim I think some posters lived there?

  • @Fightsongwriter becareful their fans claim to classy but are the exact opposite. Better go with multiple people if you don’t want to get jumped. My brother in law was jumped outside a bathroom there about ten years ago. He has been to all B12 venues and says KSU fans are worse than anyone not named fizzou.

  • Be a goodwill ambassador, when you visit. If we win, act like Bill Self does going through the hand shake line. It is like going to France. If you show an interest in their culture, especially their basketball culture, they will be gracious and enjoy your visit and treat you well. Americans are good people to associate with, when they are not being surgically needled about their fears. The only time I have ever been mis- treated as a visiting fan was when I attended a baseball game with a Kansas City Royals fan at Anaheim Stadium and he insisted on waving an inflatable Royals bat in their faces I tend not to wear my colors in Enemy cribs, but I do not hide that I am a KU fan from those around me. They are invariably curious and responsive, when I show them a little bit of knowledge of their program and ask them for more. They especially like it, if I can find something positive to say about their coaches past, or present. I have even had opposing fans ask me why I am not as stuck up as other KU fans? 😄

  • @jaybate-1.0 it would be more fun to stay home then!

  • Here is the answer…wear at t-shirt that says “Decades of Dominance” they will probably think it refers to their football program and be nice to you when in reality it refers to KU basketball and its domination of KSU. Make it purple…after all it is the combination of crimson and blue. 😎

  • @jaybate-1.0 Mention how much you admired Jack Hartman, Mike Evans, Chuckie Williams, Mitch Richmond, and Rolando Blackman. Also, how cool is it for KSU that two other Big 12 schools have KSU alums as coaches.

Every fan likes visitors who show they respect the host.

  • @Fightsongwriter I went to a KU-KSU game a few years ago. Wear your Jayhawk gear. Talk to people around you about how good their team is. Obviously, don’t be a jerk. The fans are 90% Kansans and, by nature, polite. Manhattan is a fun place. Honestly, I have a hard time thinking of anything bad to say about my experience. We won, and that helped probably. LOL.

WVU fans on the other hand… go visit the countryside.

  • Here is the bumpersticker you need on your old pickup…

    Screen Shot 2017-02-05 at 8.59.05 PM.png

All those animal husbands should be called out.

  • K-State fans are so stupid - you will probably see a sign that says “You aren’t in Kansas any more”…

  • Possible signage: Dorothy’s slippers were Crimson not purple.

  • @DanR I went to a KU-KSU game a LOOOOONG time ago in Manhattan. Don’t remember the year - probably early 90’s. Anyway, if memory serves me, K-Suck led pretty much the whole game and the barnyard boys in the stands were losing what little bit of their minds they had. KU clawed their way back into the game (a lot like a recent game of ours, where the climbing was against us…)

Anyway (remember, an old man’s memory from 25 or so years ago) we were down by 2 with seconds to go, KU brings the ball up the court and Steve Woodberry buries a trey from way beyond the 3 pt line at the buzzer and we win by one.

Apparently I was the only KU fan in the stands that particular evening and I jumped out of my seat, fists clenched and arms raised in exuberance and let out a rather boisterous ROCK CHALK BABY!!

I was not the most popular guy in the coliseum at that moment. I can’t tell you how many death threats I received on my way out of there and in the parking lot. I distracted them with shiny new quarters and promises to buy them free passes to visit the sheep at Sunset Zoo.

    Good times.

  • @nuleafjhawk lmao you win my friend

  • Neutral for sure. I made the mistake of wearing a KU hat to a KState football game. We lost the game and as I was walking through the parking lot, a drunk girl sitting on the tailgate of a pickup-not even kidding-started yelling profanities at the group I was with. I didn’t even remember I was wearing the hat. She followed us for about 50 yards yelling “f— KU”. Welcome to Manhattan.

But, I’m going to be honest here: At the OState football game, OState fans sat anywhere and everywhere in the stadium. It was irritating and annoying to me to be in reserved KU seating and be surrounded by orange. I like it best when all the opposing fans sit together in another (hopefully worse seats than mine) section and I can root against them with a little distance between us.

  • @stoptheflop Wore my KU hat and shirt to a KU football game in Manhattan. I never actually made in past the parking lot though. Too much tailgate action with the people I came with. Afterwards we went to Aggieville- Jake’s Last Chance Saloon. The place was chalk full of morons, I heard a couple of the most racist conversations possible. I also had some really cute girl hang all over me for 3o minutes (because of my Jayhawk hat) before I could get rid of her. My wife, who was there with me, was not impressed.

  • @dylans Wow, that’s a lot more fun than I had. I should have just gone straight to the bars.

My issue is not with our esteemed posters. It is with Lubbock. It’s too bad, perhaps, that my one and only impression of the town is so tainted. It’s probably a lovely college town with many fine, hard-working, salt-of-the-earth types living there. I just had “one of those days” during my stay that was so comically bad even hearing the name “Lubbock” all these years later makes me cringe.

  • @tis4tim maybe a book or movie

  • @stoptheflop

" I didn’t even remember I was wearing the hat. She followed us for about 50 yards yelling “f— KU”. "

There is only one good way to handle those situations…

Point at the jack arse and laugh hysterically. If she continues, laugh even harder, while pointing. I’ve backed down a lot of people doing this. You can watch their stature shrink every second you laugh. And I mean LAUGH… laugh so hard you almost vomit. Lots of hysteria. Gut-wrenching…

  • @tis4tim I remember a day…it would’ve been in the winter months where they had forecast a dust storm. Outside, it looked like it was going to rain…it was dark, and overcast. And every 2 or 3 minutes, the loudest lightening you ever heard would go off. this went on all day. The whole day. It never rained a drop, but I will remember the weirdest weather day ever spent in my life in Lubbock, Tx. I’ve been through some really terrible dust storms, several tropical storms, 2 hurricanes, tons of tornadoes, but nothing compares with that day in lubbock.

  • I’d hand out fliers for Farmersonly.com

  • @KUSTEVE Lubbock doesn’t look like a typical American city. Unless it has built taller building in the last few years, the tallest building I saw was about 6 stories. Secondly, many of the houses are built much lower to the ground than I’ve ever seen. From the street, it looks like a six foot person could touch the roof. Lubbock just had a much different look and feel than any other US city I’ve visited.

  • @stoptheflop That’s odd. I lived there 8 years, and never experienced that. maybe the lack of tall buildings…but when you move from a little town in Kansas to Lubbock, it was like moving to New York City for me…lol.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I don’t think they make Grape students take an IQ test for entrance, do they?

No. There is no one there capable of grading them.

  • @mayjay LOL.

  • Higgins tonight too!👱🏻

  • @Fightsongwriter Good luck!!

    KU better win.

  • There’s a sign that say bill self= art briles

  • Observations from my night in the Little Apple

    1. K-State fans are whiney, annoying, have an alarmingly low BB IQ, and have an inferiority complex the size of the Big Apple.
    2. That the Admin allows the students to chant F KU all night long shows an extreme lack of class and unconscionable hypocrisy.
    3. The crowd was far more excited that they played “Sandstorm” than any other aspect of the night which shows why they will never be in our league.
    4. The arena is nice but basic. The scoreboard is really nice and their sound system is amazingly good.
    5. There were more KU shirts than I expected.
    6. Their point guards are really bad.
    7. Higgins is the worst ref of all time and hell bent on engineering the outcome so the focus is on him. The bogus calls kept them in the game.
    8. Their bleachers are not flat but concave…a butt catcher, as it were, and quite comfortable.
    9. Bruce Weber is an idiot for not giving Johnson a touch in the low post every possession. We had no one who could guard him and he only took 7 shots. They win if he attempts 12. Instead their bad guards heave up nervous, ill advised 3’s., and DJ is placed frequently out on the floor where he is soooo uncomfortable.
    10. My perfect road streak is intact and I would most certainly never go back. Damn they are annoying.

Next stop on the Quest…Norman Invasion in 2018.

  • @Fightsongwriter Thanks for the on-the-spot report. I think you captured it well.

I always think of this cartoon character when visioning the whiner:

  • @Fightsongwriter did you start the Rock chalk chant? Could u tell some calls were bad? Anyone yell at you?

  • @Crimsonorblue22

Only arena where I did not hear the chant when we won. But we also bolted at the horn because my client had to be at work at 6:30 in KC.

The calls were blankly horrible and replayed on video.

I was by older folk and families so all was calm. But no one too friendly either.

  • @Fightsongwriter I don’t know if you’re single or not, but some great pickup lines in Manhattan:

You don’t sweat much for a fat girl.

I feel drawn to you. It must be your incredible mass that creates such gravitational pull.

You are so sweet, it made your teeth rot.

You look like trash, may I take you out?

  • @Fightsongwriter being a “song writer” disappointed you didn’t start the chant😉

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I wrote the lyrics to the KU fightsong so maybe I can get a free pass!
