Obviously I can only evaluate what is seen on TV in games (not practices, etc.) With that in mind, Melvin has been the most pleasant surprise. But from what I've seen, the tone is at least equally set by the energy of Tre and Flory.

Just a couple of things in comparison.---NC State is averaging 15 points more then us per game 89/74- - -averaging eight steals per and I think we get five - - --and they are shoot close to five percent better from the three.

Conclusion? -- - should be easy enough to remedy -- three keys : Take care of the ball , we have done pretty good with that only 10.9 per - --- as far as the scoring per again should be easy, we either got to be really aggressive on the defensive side of the end , get right in their grill/slow them from limit transition breakouts and run ourselves which I think DP can spear head that, then guard the three- - - -no easy open three's

Part of that point differential is tempo. According to kenpom NCSt plays with the 73rd fastest tempo in the country, which is one above-average. We play with the 254th fastest, which is one of the slowest.

Was really hoping our tempo would increase this season with the athletes we have but that's not happening

Self presser said he practiced Tuesday (off day Monday for team) and no issues. Fingers crossed.

Reportedly, Bill Self has said that Melvin Council has been "hands down" the MVP of the team so far. Thoughts?

Personally, I like Melvin a lot but I would give the nod to Tre.

That's a pretty positive review by Self.

I heard someone say on the could be wrong podcast that people who don't love council are just not BALL knowers. Couldn't agree more. And I know DP is great. Like really really good. But I still just would rather watch Council bring the ball up than DP. The energy he brings to every step he takes on the court is infectious. (I'm not saying Council should play instead of DP just to be clear) Hopefully they will complement each other with one being so calm cool and collected and the other being always ready to be a burst of pure energy. DP is great. Maybe the best freshman we've ever had, but it's watching guys like Council that make it easy for me to be a Jayhawk fan.

@benshawks08 I see DP has more of a 2 guard at this point that can bring the ball up periodically. Council reminds me a lot of Tyshawn and he was fun to watch as well.

@kjayhawks2.0 I agree. It is interesting that Self has DP bring the ball up instead of Melvin. I would prefer to see it the other way around so Melvin can take advantage if the defense is lazy in getting set and so that DP can focus on moving without the ball and getting into scoring position instead of running the point.

But, Self knows much more than I do.

I'm 99% certain that has to do with having Vaughn on the bench.

This team doesn't play like any other team we've ever had, and part of that is how they are learning how to take care of the ball. Self always focused on aggressive defense and never really specifically focused on taking care of the rock. The reduction in TOs is because of Vaughn. He's teaching them how to pass... like... how to pass out of a double-team.

@tundrahok Wow, I guess Coach knows Council better than I do! He shoots too much has been my impression. I do like his energy. Calling him MVP is a surprise to me!

Council leads the conference in minutes played per game. The guy before DP came back was probably Elmarko who can get it done mostly but Melvin can play defense and wants to. Council has shot sub 40 every year and it looks like the floaters he uses when penetrating are still a bit awkward. I guess DP will run things more or less now and having Melvin as a wing is good because he can assist and was getting better and better at that all year. Now that we can average 80 I think he will be good in whatever role he is in. This roster goes eight deep plus I keep dreaming of Dawson getting comfortable and going off from three. DP, Flory and Tre, Melvin and Tiller are reliable on both ends and are scoring 69 points between them. Now that Elmarko, who can go off and Jamari who defends and hits 3 balls this teams is going to get tougher and tougher to beat. Of course worry wart me is nervous about NCSU and their tall deep shooters.

Here's why I'm not so keen on Melvin: Of the 9 guys averaging at least 10 minutes played, he has the lowest shooting percentage. On 3's he's horrendous at 19%. But he's taken the most shots so far. Obviously DP's return is going to change the shot volume. I don't pay attention to defense as much as I should and it's certainly a virtue to behold when it's done well. He's a good rebounding guard, blocks some shots, nearly 1 per game, leads the team in thefts, although DP is averaging more. I do love his energy and his confidence. I really love when a kid toils in the low majors and suddenly is starting for a blue blood on what is looking to be a very good team. I'll do my darndest to appreciate him more than I do.

I saw somewhere we are top 10 in total dunks this season. Flory, Tre, Council, Tiller, Kohl all were on the list. I am still absorbing how great DP is in scoring ability. If he starts playing without being on a minute restriction with this team he would get 30.

Council certainly needs to shoot better from everywhere and hopefully having Peterson back helps him. He kind of just plays with this reckless abandon that can be both good and bad at times. He's a dog out there and so happy we got him. I will like him even more if he can get those shooting %'s a bit higher.
