KU vs Louis Takeaways

  • Rewatching first half… thoughts.

Tiller and Jamari did a nice job getting us back in the flow after Louisvilles 9-0 run.

Peterson has nice hands, and super court awareness. Hes a conductor.

Tiller and Flory can play together and there is zero problem last night. No lumbering between them and strong shooters on the floor with them.

Didnt find myself worried at all when anyone entered or exited the floor. This team feels confident, competent, and cohesive.

When we did commit turnovers it didnt feel like a mounting pressure or impending meltdown. We never got shook. We know what we’ve got.

On top of the athleticism, love the teams length. Tiller, White, Council and Mbiya have solid wingspans.

  • Us never getting shook was a good sign. Last year any of those Louisville runs that got them back in the game would have absolutely broken us

  • Watching Peterson with and without the ball the guy know what he is going to do and what others will do. He has an economy of motion and it makes everyone around him more calm and efficient.

I think Elmarko will be a better player than the Elmarko we knew his freshman year. He seemed nervous his freshman year and the game was sometimes too fast for him, even though he is very athletic. Maybe he was thinking too much instead of just playing. I’m not sure he is completely over that but I think he’s come a long ways!

Elmarko as a freshman was put into a position he wasn’t ready for or practiced for because of Morris. Elmarko was supposed to be Dejuan’s back up and first guard off the bench. Morris getting kicked off the team forced Elmarko into a starting role in a position he hadn’t been playing much and it showed all season.

  • Lots of good stuff from that away exhibition game. It certainly was played from both sides like it meant something. We didn’t really see that dog in the team the last few years but you can see this is a different group with different leaders.

If this is what DP gives you on a given night and we really only saw him play a half then just wow. He didn’t waste any time living up to his reputation.

I thought Tiller was the biggest surprise of the night in a good way. You just never know what your getting with a player returning from injury that had missed a solid 12 months or more of playing basketball. He has to be the other big for this team to reach it’s ceiling.

Flory hitting the weight room this offseason was big, literally. His passing looks improved and he had a sweet drive into contact that ended with an athletic finish. Hopefully he figures out his foul issues.

We played a good team in their house and won rather easily, kept the crowd out for most of it. That’s what good KU teams used to do on the road. I think we saw the potential is high with this group and came away really excited about the season

  • @approxinfinity After the 9-0 run we went back up by 9 points and I believe they only got within 8 twice after that. That is the inverse of last year where we were not in control. My next thought is this was just one exhibition game and we will see.

  • @approxinfinity One play where Mbiya deflected a pass in the lane, He reached out from an improbable distance and I thought whaaaaat? This team is going to be an intriguing study. Thanks for your insight.

  • I have no idea why I think this after watching one game of Tiller, but he seems like he’s gonna be that love/hate player.

I just sense he and Self will be at odds. Weird, I know.

    Position battle behind the scenes?

  • Hasn’t Self said he’s an nba player? I was pleasantly surprised by him. As much as flory fouls it’s nice to know we have a quality back up.

  • @rockchalkjayhawk

Tiller is a lot more mobile then I anticipated. He showed some tantalizing skills and has legit size. Self throwing around that he could be a pro in the future is very interesting. His development this year seems like one of the main individual keys to this season.

  • @Zabudda

Mbiya is a giant human. Total project but hopefully someone that can be thrown out there a few minutes a half.

  • A few more thoughts.

Jackson looked athletic as heck and a lot more physically mature. He didn’t handle the pressure all that great in the 2nd half but made all his free throws. I think he needs to play to that strength of getting downhill and getting to the line.

Council reminded me so much of Tyshawn. He’s a dog and a heck of an athlete.

Did I mention this is a very athletic team? It’s great to be able to say that again.

White was a bit of a mixed bag but ended up with 14. Those two 3’s was good to see a 4 finally stretching the defense. Need to see more of him. He was consistently mentioned as one of the best players this offseason by Self

  • Several things about the game/team – - -One thing I thought KU pretty much was in control of this from the word go till the end. Only one little stretch they led. - I took a peek on the Louisville boards all said KU looked my polished/comfortable to what they were doing, & of course all were saying DP was a really food player/ the Real Deal.

Now I don’t think it’s a stretch to believe that if Self would of let him play more he could of easily probably finished with 40. - – I said earlier I think this team we have is going to cause some real problems on the defensive end. Lots of deflected passes , lots of stolen balls/opponent turnovers.- Length , Length , Length my friends cause real havoc.

Depth, guys we have DEPTH, quality Depth , go back check the box score guys with 12 points , 10 points , 8 points etc , etc, - -some guys that can actually play defense

I think there is a bunch of people that has under estimated our team. Ya I get it this doesn’t count – right , got that , BUT count or nor you can’t take away the level of competition we played , Louisville is not no St Mary’s Sister’s of the Blind Plus on their home court. They had their fans there ready to go but KU never really gave them the chance. Every time they trim down to 10- - - 8 points KU always answered right back to 14- -so hang on to your shorts guys ready to enjoy the ride

  • I wrote the other day that Trey White seemed not as big or tall as I’d anticipated. Didn’t seem like he had the size to play down low when needed.

But, After rewatching the first half, I think the camera positions and angles made most of the guys look small. Kohl, too.

So, I take it all back til I see a proper ESPN game or something 🙂

He seemed eager to move around and mobile for sure. Maybe some of the offseason stories about him wanting to play wing with his size are throwing me off kilter!

I heard Jackson is in better shape than where he was as a freshman. A lot more muscle. @Texas-Hawk-10 said it… he was forced into his role two years ago and right into a lot of pressure. He will not be at the center of attention and can play off the ball now. I’m excited for him! Just hope he (and everyone else) stays healthy!

Council = TT… hopefully more like TT in his senior year!

Our length is sure a nice luxury. It’s a tricky length because it isn’t all about height. We have guys with long arms. And being long with skills of dribbling, passing, moving… By the end of the year, we should become a very dominant defensive team! And that means plenty of steals and runouts!

The depth is another luxury all together. We can throw different looks at teams, and everyone we play will have to learn to play against multiple players at each position. Speaking of positions… our guards are basically positionless! Who really is our PG? I’m going to say DP because I see him leading this team, but we’ll want him to play off the ball, too.

  • @drgnslayr

Absolutely Elmarko looks in good shape and Self mentioned he worked tirelessly to get back to 100%. He needs reps and hopefully his skill level comes along.

I see the trio of Council, Peterson and Jackson handling all the PG duties. Likely to see 2 of the 3 on the court at all times so that helps break it up. I see DP running the show in half court sets as you want him with the Ball in his hands to make a play as much as possible

  • My main takeaway was that we were a clear level above Louisville athletically and that makes me excited.

  • @BeddieKU23 I re watched the game today and Council was shooting free throws and I had to do a double take cause for a second he looked A LOT LIKE Tyshawn Taylor I know crazy right ? but for a second he did

  • Fun with the box score!

There’s some good stuff and a few not so great stats in here. Of course it’s only an exhibition.

    3 pt shooting

    KU – 8-21

    Louisville – 11-38

I’ll take that shooting percentage most nights, but that’s a big difference in attempts.

    DP – 6-10!

    Tre White – 2-3

Everybody else was a goose egg.

    Rebounds – interesting

    KU – 34

    Louisville – 47

21 of those 47 from UL were offensive rebounds. Crazy.

    Random stats

DP has 5 steals, but 6 turnovers.

    Tiller with 4 blocks!

  • I would like to see us improve on the boards. That said the discrepency was largely due to long rebounds off of wild shots going UL’s way, so its not as bad as it seems.

  • I’ve been teetering with college basketball since NIL/Transfer. Having a game like this close to me(2.5 hour drive), tickets in the KU family section, and seeing DP look like he did the first half has sucked me back in!

Most of our players aren’t tall, but they’re long which is why they’re able to defend well. Length is more important than just heighth when it comes to defense which is why Dejuan was as good a defender as he was despite his athletic limitations.

  • Elite wingspan Hawks. This team can and will muddy games up. BAD BALL @approxinfinity

I’m even thinking a lot more positive… creating defensive stops followed by a lot more runouts! If we keep that speed and push open court I can almost guarantee you it’s the impact Vaughn has on this team.

What I am taking from all of this… as long as we have Vaughn, a lot of our old bad habits that always hindered us will be gone! In past years we would have turned the ball over a lot more in this game. Without doubt!
