Lance Leipold

They were LITERALLY the worst team in college football.

I believe it was some season around 1978, '79 or '80 when the Playboy preseason football ranking had KState as the worst college football team, with KU close behind. After Nolan Cromwell left, it was just sad in our little state.

  • @mayjay Oh, you just got that for the articles, eh?

  • @patoh3 I probably got around to reading it long after football was over.

Seriously, though, the PB football issue was very highly respected. Their preseason All Americans were flown for a big photo shoot, and they made predictions for lots of awards, etc. Not the same level as SI but they had quite a run.

  • @mayjay But PB’s benefits were better 😉

  • I’m not saying we should fire Lance. But if we keep him we have to accept that we will never beat K State

  • @dylans Sorry-- what I was saying is negative 3. As in Zero and then you can go back three more years of losses. My son is a sophomore. He was 3 years old the last time KU beat KState in football. (He doesn’t remember it.)

  • Honestly, what does it matter who coaches KU? Doesn’t seem to matter much.

But, we at least seem respectable at times with Lance. I’m in no hurry to rush him out the door.

(I do think he should have given other QBs a chance to right the ship today)

  • Im just shocked how bad we weren’t ready to play. KSU blitz’s a high percentage of the time and we seemed shocked. They did it all game last season vs us. Jalon Daniels may have turned in the worst QB performance I’ve ever seen at any level. Unfortunately my sons team lost the championship game today as well and I’m sure our 5th grade QB had a better passer rating than JD. I hope we never see JD in a KU uniform again. X is exploding with people thinking he threw the damn game thats how bad he was. I hope the team corned him in the locker room and said your done loser.

  • @kjayhawks I’m not a JD superfan, but what would be his motive for throwing this game?

  • @nuleafjhawk Sorry to say but that same thought raced through my mind for a second myself but then I thought NA surely not. Yet his play was so atrocious some them was like WOW it looked like that’s exactly what he was doing

  • Yeah its not logical that he threw it. His head wasnt in it, the pressure got to him, and he had a really bad game. Cant kick JD to the curb. He has done a lot for this program. But man, that was rough.

  • @approxinfinity Logically he didn’t throw the game but man that was bad like the worst KU performance I’ve seen in my lifetimes. That says a lot @nuleafjhawk money would be the gain lol. Question becomes can we even beat Okie lite? Not with today’s performance

  • @kjayhawks I definitely think we can beat OK ST. If we use our cheerleaders instead of our so called football players.

  • Hard to imagine the weekend going worse than it with Volleyball getting upset Friday to start and likely ending their B12 title hopes. Between today and the rain its depressing

  • I wonder if the Indiana coach would like to move to Lawrence? It’d be fun to ruin another good coach…

  • The coach is only going to take you as far as the QB will go. The QB will only take you as far as the line will allow. The skill players have to complete the plays. None of it works without the other parts.

JD is probably maxed out - this is what we get this year. Hopefully the next QB seizes the job early and leaves no doubt.

He just signed an 8 year, $93 million extension to keep him from going to Penn St.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Don’t take everything I say so literally. I just like to think out loud sometimes.

  • Well, Brian Kelly is now available to coach.

  • This cycle is going to be especially insane. We’re probably looking at 25ish FBS openings. Which drives me nuts about the fire Lance crowd. Where do they think we fall in that ranking, especially in a year where there aren’t really many great candidates out there?

  • I went to a lot of games during the Gill, Weiss and Miles era. Lance is so much better! There is always hope to win. There was zero chance back then. Maybe some changes w/ast coaches.

I think a lot of people forget how hard it is to win here. And even if they do, keeping them here long enough to actually build a program.

I do think making bowls with his own guys is important. If he can’t do that, we do need to move on. But he absolutely should get another season at the very least. Probably 2 considering the buyout.

  • Give him a lifetime contract. Changing coaches isn’t going to help KU football. It’s a moribund program. It’s like expecting the Cleveland Browns to be good - maybe make the postseason, but to truly threaten for a title - not going to happen.

I’m enjoying winning 4 maybe 5 games this year. Way better than previous years. It helps that the Big12 lost all the good football teams - no Texas, Oklahoma, Texas AM, Missouri, or even Nebraska. That’s the disappointing part for me - no good team in the Big12 and KU still can’t capitalize. I know they’re not good, but I was hoping for an inflated record due to the competition sucking hind tit.

The best thing about this football season is that basketball has started and we no longer have to pretend like we genuinely care about KU football!!!

  • I do care about KU fb

  • @dylans I care a lot about KU football and always will. We still have a shot to get to a bowl game which is the only goal that matters right now. Stinks we lost yet again to our rivals. But it prob doesn’t hurt recruiting as much as it did in the past. Just have to dip into the Booth money more to get local kids.

  • @dylans You scare the sh*t out of me. These are my exact thoughts.

  • Honest questions I’d like to hear some input on. Is Lance Leipold a good D1 coach? Is he a good recruiter? The two best years in Lawrence (6-7 in 22, 9-4 in 2023) were loaded with Les Miles recruits. Did he get lucky with the foundation Les laid and now we are seeing he is incompetent?

  • @kjayhawks I don’t know that he’s incompetent, I just think there’s a huge difference in the way things are done in D3 and D1. Maybe he’s cut out for D3.
