That loss wasn’t like these. That Villanova team was an all time great team and got red hot and shot above their normal %. KU wasn’t great that night, but they were nowhere like this.

I think there’s talent. But the pieces have not meshed. I feel like Self is still waiting on DeJuan to transform into the locker room leader a la Sr Mario or Sr Sherron Collins or Sr Frank Mason or Sr Davonte Graham…
But he’s not that kind of personality. He’s not taking over the locker room. While they wait for someone to call the team meeting and make that impassioned speech and pull the pieces together, the team is heading off the cliff.
For whatever reason… the alpha is absent on this team. And at this point in the season, if you haven’t found your source of energy in the locker room, your team is not going to have one.

But in reality it’s horribly skilled players and no one respects d2 on the squad especially the new guys. They hear all this talk of how great he is then watch him get his lunch eaten nightly……throw that in with worthless Hunter and kj who can clap his hands real hard for dunks but when it comes to late game free throws blockouts he forgets to actually go rebound the ball

He played 3 years of high school in Indiana, so he’s probably a permanent resident by now. Reportedly, his NIL deal is worth $530K this year.

Ive seen my share of authoritarian mindfuckery by coaches imposing their egos on kids from a position of power in travel sports. Now that poor coaches are armed with analytics, they will use the eye test when it suits them and analytics when it suits them, to back into a preordained conclusion while attempting to invalidate opposition and overwhelm it into submission.
Good coaches, on the other hand, strip away the how and get to the why that motivates everyone and validate it, and build from there. They do not lose the team. The team grants them authority because they earn it.
Im not seeing much of this happening the last 3 years at Kansas.

Man. I don’t know whether to admire those of you who watched the whole horror show last night or mock you. Are you great, die hard fans who never give up hope? Or just twisted sickos who like watching train wrecks?
I quit watching the 2022 NC game when we were behind 15 at halftime. I shouldn’t have, but I did. That was a different team. Capable of making a comeback. This team is not. We get down 15 now, it’s turn out the lights, the party’s over.

Not sure why we can’t maintain some sort of standard for him. Love him for his legendary tenure, but these last few seasons have been a disaster and he’s the main architect for this roster with a top 5 NIL budget in the sport. He said he was thinking about the roster for this season for the majority of last season and ended up putting out the same main parts and added complimentary transfers versus making an actual change and doubling down on archaic basketball principles.

This is a coach who built the program around developing 3 and 4-year guys and mixing in stars. He’s done this for TWENTY years. The 3 and 4 year guys were pushed hard and the strong survived and then thrived. So now we are expecting him to change and get guys turned around in 6 months? Not going to happen. You can call that “archaic” if you want that’s fine. Or you can get into playing shooters over bigs. None of that matters. What matters is the game is now about mercenaries and you need AAU style coaches. 1-2-3 Family chants are an absolute joke. 100% of these kids would bail on their “family” for a bigger payday.

Coach K pre-season #1 across 8 years - one national championship. UNC has 10 or more losses 10 of the last 13 years. UConn has double digit losses 10 of the last 16 years with two years below .500. Kentucky has double digit losses 6 of the last 13 years. Kansas has double digit losses in 3 of the last 25 years.
But I guess those with pitchforks are going by the eye test on a two year sample size?

@approxinfinity KUs three double digit loss seasons (so far in the last twenty five years!!!) are last year, 7 years ago, and 12 years ago. So no it’s not cherry picking to include all of Bill’s career and a bit of Roy’s to get to a quarter century of sustained success. If I go back further it gets a bit darker only highlighting how good off all the newcomers to KU basketball, that have only known Bill Self as the coach, have had it.
Bill Self 3/22 years with double digit losses. (One more on the way)
Roy Williams 5/15 years with double digit losses.
Larry Brown 3/5 years with double digit losses.
Ted Owens 8/19 years with double digit losses. Three years below .500

We gave away 2 good recruits to get Hunt that would be 3 year players right now and are better than Hunt/KJ most nights. Hunt was lazy as hell last year but still brought back. AJ Storr is on is 3rd school in as many years and a known to half ass it. Self wanted him and he’s here.

What do you want? Him to be fired today? Send back his salary? What exactly? You don’t think the guy is embarrassed? He’s insanely competitive but all of his characteristics that make him a great coach don’t fit the transfer portal and soft kids era.
I’m not naive and understand the end is near. However, I believe he deserves more respect then what some people are showing.

I think the issue is more with conflicting opinions in our echo chamber. We want other people to hold Bill more accountable. Imo.

I’m still lost on 3 things still, they did BYU film prep, scouting and game preparation and came to the conclusion that starting 3 Bigs against a team that shoots a high % of 3’s and spaces the floor schematically was the best matchup to win this game. That seriously cannot be the outcome, but it literally happened.
I don’t believe the coaches put the players in the best position to win the game last night. The players quit as well for the most part. That level of play is not acceptable at any College Program, but we witnessed what felt like Rock Bottom.
We’ve seen poor play that leads to blowout losses. This was far beyond any of those kinds of games. You could see the turmoil in body language and reactions to plays. It was like the entire team was given a half speed pill before. There is actually a serious problem going on within this team.
