The JD Redemption Story

  • @FarmerJayhawk all news to me. Found an article about the previous decision to have Grimes on the sideline: https://247sports.com/college/kansas/article/kansas-football-jeff-grimes-offense-play-calls-sideline-235645895/amp/

  • Jalen really needs to not let the first negative thing wreck his night. Seemingly has happened the last two games. A guy whom we’ve seen toss the ball with fairly good accuracy deep to open receivers suddenly becomes basically unable to complete any first down length passes.

  • @FarmerJayhawk right that’s been my biggest issue is you have to change something. “Doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting a different result is the definition of insanity” - Albert Einstein. Word on the street is LL is headed to Gainesville and packing it in.

  • If someone with the initials “J.D.” doesn’t figure out how to play college ball by about 2:00pm CDT this Saturday, he needs to get on with his other, more important duties like figuring out World Peace, saving baby whales and solving Global Warming and let anybody else play QB. I’m still dumb enough to want to go to a bowl game.

Don’t even rip, mark it down WE ARE going o a good bowl gams. - - -So let it be written- - -So let it be done

Don’t fall into the trap like many others of being fair weather fan -ONCE a JAY HAWK - - - -ALWAYS A JAY HAWK-- remember - -just breath

  • @jayballer67 I’ve been rooting for KU Football (and Basketball) for about 60 years. I am not a fair weather fan. I am a fan who is watching what was supposed to be a potentially historic season quickly go down the drain because of either a stupid Offensive Coordinator or a QB who is grossly under-performing. I’m breathing just fine.

  • @FarmerJayhawk said in The JD Redemption Story:

Word is . . . .Grimes to the booth

Now, how to get someone to take the batteries out of his headset…

take a chill pill buddy, no one was calling you a fair weather, I was saying don’t be like them. or being a band wagon fan - just uing as examples not calling you one geez.

Again we are going to a bowl and a good bowl. Our Season is FAR from ruined, like I posted in another thread our season is just starting-- -CONFERENCE GAMES-and with our Schedule it is big time favor for us. When JD-6 get’s this turned around and HE WILL get it turned around and good chance this Saturday Hell the WV fans have said the same about their team- -The QB is worse-- -their Secondary can’t cover a cold, JD COULD end up with a monster game----we gonna be all right

You have rooted for KU Football and Basketball ALMOST as long as me - -but not quite - -I’ve been aa KU fan for like 67 years, maybe sometimes to much so. I get so mad and if ANYONE starts talking shit about them get’s my BP up, maybe take it a little to serious, I’m working on it but got a ways to go-- -Somebody eve questions if I’m a true fan I say does fair weather fans have multiple tattoo’s of Ku on their body if they are fair weather fan ? - you got things like permanently marking your body for your team— you bette be a true fan lol

  • Well so much for that. Time to usher in a new qb

  • At least explore our options.

  • The Defense is a contributing factor too. They seem to fold in the last 5 minutes of each half. Are they playing “prevent” or ???

  • For the record - I am a HUGE Daniels fan.

    Jack Daniels.

  • @Gorilla72 Yes. But Daniels missed too many open throws today. If not for that we probably blow WVU out

  • @Jhawk69 💯 if Bean and AK are still here, we have won every game by double digits. The defense is a working progress and not surprising with losing some of their best players with Miller, Logan and Booker. They lost arguably their best player at every level of the defense.

  • Giving up 15 points in 3 minutes is unacceptable and the defense deserves to be harshly criticized. I never meant to suggest otherwise. However, that does not exempt JD from criticism.

The KU defense for sure has to shouldr a lot of lame in these games. They have been folding late like a cheap suit

  • Question of the day: Will I be happy or sad that i don’t have ESPN+ to watch the game today?

Always fun to watch and root for the Jayhawks, but man the last few have been heartbreaking and disappointing!

  • @rockchalkjayhawk we ain’t losing not today

  • @rockchalkjayhawk said in The JD Redemption Story:

Either way, you will have saved money!

  • You HAVE to bench JD.

10/25 for 122 yards. Lucky to not have a few INTs today.

Nick Saban benched Jalen Hurts at half of a National Championship game. He would have already benched JD this year.

  • Also, 3 rushes for JD in a must-win game is a crime.

This staff deserves to be criticized.

  • And before anyone tries to blame the D today. They created 4 TOs and only gave up 28. Did their part.

  • @Kcmatt7 said in The JD Redemption Story:

Defense still gets plenty of blame today because they still gave up over 500 yards and couldn’t get a stop when needed. This isn’t absolving Daniels and the receivers besides Grimm because they were absolutely terrible today too. Neither side of the ball was good enough today.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 - KU offense didn’t do enough to stay on the field. Thus, the defense was gassed. Still looks like the O takes most of the blame, IMO.

Explain the defense sucking in the first half then? Both sides of the ball absolutely sucked today.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 - Even though they gave up a lot of yards in the first 30 minutes, it was close at half. Inept offense in the 2nd half let it get out of hand (although a couple of calls that could have gone KU’s way might have changed everything). I would have to see the splits by half though.

Both sides of ball sucked today. The defense gave up damn near 300 yards in the 1st half.

Always fun to watch and root for the Jayhawks, but man the last few have been heartbreaking and disappointing!

The positives today: — somehow I got ESPN+ for free! Or they are secretly charging me. Better check my statements.

    The negatives:

    — just about everything else?

JD made some good plays, but some bad ones as well. He didn’t look inept, but he appeared lacking in what you want in a starting QB.

His box score stats aren’t great.

    Something’s broken with this team.

Three big plays stood out to me today:

    — the TCU special teams return TD. Pathetic effort. A flag would have helped us there. Seemed like a clear block in the back. Still pathetic.

    — TCU TD by No 88 at the start of the second half. The tackling efforts displayed by KU were embarrassingly bad. A simple push out of bounds would have stopped that multiple times.

    — JD has zero sense of game awareness. That pick was absolutely unacceptable at that point of the game. Game over.

A general thought on college refs: I only watch KU football, but wow are they bad at times. Did you see the ref grab the TCU kid by the arm in the end zone after his run back TD? And that KU catch that was ruled a non catch seemed shockingly inept.

    Stupid Jayhawks.

  • Telling quote from the Horny Toads coach:

“Very seldom do you win a football game when you turn the ball over three times,” Dykes said. “We were very fortunate that way.”

  • @kjayhawks your signature is prescient

  • @kjayhawks and that is to say I believe Jeff Grimes has called his last play at Kansas

  • @FarmerJayhawk I don’t wish the guy any harm but we have to change something here in hopes of making a bowl game

  • @FarmerJayhawk my biggest issue is this team on paper coming in as probably the most talented since 2008 and they may end up winless in conference play that’s just sad man. Devin Neal is going to play in the NFL, Cobee Bryant, Melo Dotson are all probably getting drafted. Jerome Robinson, Cornell Wheeler, Luke Grimm and Lawrence Arnold will have a chance to do the same or at least get camp invites. Gosh I feel so bad for them guys.

  • @FarmerJayhawk said in The JD Redemption Story:

@kjayhawks and that is to say I believe Jeff Grimes has called his last play at Kansas

Goff needs to step in here. Someone has to be the sacrificial lamb.

But regardless of whether they do or not, it’s too late. They had to win one of these two games to make a bowl game. He shouldn’t have called plays today.

  • Imagine asking JD to throw 30 passes after watching him throw a football these past 4 games. What a game plan.

  • I will say the fan discourse on twitter talking about firing LL is hysterical. Guy is still THE guy.

Unfortunate season. He is still a heck of a coach.

  • @Kcmatt7 we are a fickle people, us KU football fans. It’s funny, who do they think we can get after paying $40m or whatever in buyouts?

  • @FarmerJayhawk who do they think takes this job if you fire LL after one bad season? lol.

  • @Kcmatt7 man it’s gonna be you and me out there lol

  • I went to the game today.

That’s about all I have to say about that.

  • @approxinfinity. Perhaps a new title for this thread? Something like - Hang on Folks - Basketball Season is almost here! Or KU Football - Same as it Ever Was.

  • @nuleafjhawk Do not be too eager to deal out judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that JD has some part to play in it, for good or evil, before this is over.

  • @approxinfinity whatever he’s going to do, he’d better get started soon

People who run their pie holes talking about firing Coach just goes to show how incompetent they are and don’t have a clue between their arse and a hole in the ground -makes no sense st all after aone bad season

  • @jayballer67 It’s silly to give a big contract after one good season, just as it’s silly to fire a coach after one bad season. You need continuity to have any chance at building a program. But the biggest thing is finding the right QB.

  • @approxinfinity said in The JD Redemption Story:

Unfortunately I fear he is done. Arm is shot, play caller doesn’t mesh, and he is making reads like a high school freshman. I don’t remember a player regressing more than him in my lifetime.

  • KC, What do you think about our O play calling this year?

  • @AsadZ I think the pass game has obviously been a major issue.

Too many straight drop backs. JD should be put into a lot of RPOs and rollouts with a run/pass option.

I also think they aren’t involving JD enough in the run game, and he’s not scrambling to run enough. If he would torch some teams on the ground they would need to start accounting for him. Which in turn opens the pass game up more.

JD not seeing the field is a challenge, but it’s even worse for him when you aren’t scheming him easy completions. You can call the perfect play but if your personnel can’t execute it doesn’t matter.

I also think we have made a scheme change pre snap to a “double motion” vs a shift. So we run a motion, then let the motion guy get set, and then run another motion. There is nothing inherently tricky about this to prep for.

A team that did the AK shifts is much tougher. You may matchup with personnel, but then we shift 3 guys all at one time and now you’re asking 3-5 defenders to adjust who they are covering.

I also thought AK schemed the running backs into the passing game better than Grimes has so far. Like not in screens but down the field. Get Devin or Hishaw the ball on the run in open space and good luck.

At the same time, I think Grimes may be a cerebral play caller and a capable QB may make him look amazing. The bigger issue I have with Grimes is his playcallibg has not adjusted for how we are currently playing. Meaning JD should not be asked to throw the ball 30 times.

What is disappointing is that LL apparently hasnt stepped in and forced Grimes to make these adjustments, which is a failure on his part. He should be criticized. He is still a really solid coach by all appearances, and he lets his guys do their job which I like. But last week was the time to get involved and influence the scheme. That didn’t happen.

If it were me, I would probably make the change to Marshall at halftime if JD doesn’t look good again against ASU and start the clock on his 4 games.

You need to get him work since we won’t be in a bowl game this year.

  • Very precise analysis KC.

When I look at our offense it seems to me like we are playing 90s football.

  • @Kcmatt7 I agree with pretty much all that. I did think the playcalling was much better this week. Grimes leaned into the RPO game and stuck with the run for the most part. Best of all I don’t think he called a single bubble screen lol.
