Don’t get the Riley kugel thing. We are a top 5 program all time, top 3 active coach, huge NIl group, top adidas school. We are landing a guy that didn’t even average 10 pts at a big time school. Sure he has upside but why is Ku reaching on a guy like that. Self and staff really blew it last year in the portal. Lets hope they figure it out this year
KU also needs depth and guys that can come off the bench and Kugel seems like a solid bench piece that can sub at multiple spots. If this is who the staff is expecting to replace McCullar, then it’s a bit disappointing, but if he’s being brought in with the idea of him being a 6th man type player, this is a solid pick up.
He’s not McCullar good on defense, but he is a plus defender.

@Texas-Hawk-10 Cryer was never coming here he returned home to play with his good friend from growing up….
-
I just get this feel that there is going to be in the end A LOT of movement. - -I think fairly good chance Furphy is gone, Very easily Dickinson is gone–Clemance gone— Mc Dowell gone-- & Jackson gone
If that turns out all of these then Would love to see this come to realization : If we could some how swing McNeely to take Johnny’s spot - - Cliff to take Dickinsons spot- - Maybe still get Mayo - -to go with Kugel- -would be solid

Filipowski enters the portal.

Huge one in. Vladislav Goldin from FAU. wonder if he follows his coach to Michigan. Talented big in his money year

-
Other FAU dudes in, Nicholas Boyd and Giancarlo Rosado.
Notre Dame freshman Carey Booth in. The 6’10 forward has promise, can shoot spot up 3s and is athletic
Norfolk St guard Jamarii Thomas in, avg 17ppg.
-
Temple Guard Hysier Miller in, avg 15ppg.
Illinois big Dain Dainja in, wouldn’t be a bad bench option big.
-
Northern Illinois guard David Coit in, avg 20ppg this year. Film shows he’s got a bag of options, can really get his own on the perimeter
-
@BeddieKU23 the knock against Dain was defense. He’s kind of a cool guy, good interview and such. His offense seems pretty limited, throws his size around for position.
-
@JAYHAWKFAN214 Could you just tell us what the tweets say instead?
-
Definitely not a defensive upgrade. Wouldn’t be a bad bench option. Started at Baylor. He impressed at times but consistency seemed to be all over the place.

Fits the mold for Tang lately. Tiny scoring guard.
-
@BShark Thats what I was thinking. I think he was highly touted but Jawan did him bad by not knowing how to coach a highly rated roster.
-
I’m not sure Tang is much better. A bit too early to say but I was not impressed this year.
Howard definitely went bad fast.

To the experts:
What’s the take on our transfer signees so far, one has to replace McCullar.
Is Self still recruiting hard in the portal.
What about our own players, any indication of KU losing players? I saw KJ is staying put.

Not an expert but some thoughts…
KU is currently “full” but yes Bill is still recruiting. This would lead us to believe there are likely some transfers out. You’d think Zach, Jamari and Elmarko are all candidates.
My biggest takeaway from the signees is that Bill saw shot creation as a glaring weakness (wow @kuballin10 he isn’t blind thankfully) and signed two guys that are able to create their own shot.
There is still more work to be done, but this will help get KU up from the 59th offensive on KP and hopefully closer to the top 10 we are typically used to (very spoiled).
Kugel is clearly a bit of a risk. If his head is on right, he is an NBA talent. He had a linsanity run (17ppg over the last 10 games) to end his freshman year which got him on NBA draft board radar. But then he struggled his sophomore year. Consistency is an issue. He had 25/9 against Baylor, 24 against Wake Forest and 22 against Auburn but then you can find games where he scores less than 5 points. Athletic, will definitely be catching some lobs.
Mayo fills an immediate need. Simply put Kansas needed a guard that could pull up and score. Hell I’d like another one (Kugel I see as a wing guy but good creator for his size). Mayo is a guy that defenders have to respect at all times. He will pull up from anywhere and shoot the ball. In the Summit it led to driving opportunities as well. I’m guessing that won’t be as effective at the P5 level but it still should improve our spacing tremendously. Especially in spots where KJ is on the bench and we are playing 4 out. His stats against P5 haven’t been the best but of course that was with Summit League team mates. Some athleticism concerns but he is a hooper. It will be interesting to see how he adjusts.
-
@BShark anything new on furphy?
-
Just to check my math, is this correct?
Out: Braun, McCullar, Timberlake In: Flory, Philon, Passmore, Mayo, Kugel
The difference is the two scholarships we were ‘penalized’ and not able to use. Is that correct? I thought we still had another year with one scholarship short. Definitely fuzzy on all this history so don’t quote me on that one, ha.
-
As of now we have:
Returning:
Adams, Clemence, Dickinson, Furphy, Harris, Jackson, McDowell,
Signings:
Bidunga, Passmore, Philon
Transfers:
Kugel, Mayo
KU as is has a full roster. This will obviously change as players explore pro options and the enter the portal. It’s now a 1:1 as far as players leaving and players KU can bring in.
-
I’ve never seen Zeke play, but I thought I read that Zeke has zero pull up or midrange game? It’s either at the rim or behind the arc. Either way, nice to have a player on the roster who can find his own shot.

He pulls up from behind the arc. He absolutely has a pull up game.
