Liam McNeeley

One thing about this recruitment to keep in mind is it had been hinging on Furphy going pro. That had seemed like a lock until more recently. I do wonder if that may complicate things.
I understand any potential apprehension…but I truly think those two could play together.

A wing that can handle, shoot, and play the 4 is right up there with an elite scoring guard on the shopping list this year. I don’t have total clarity on whether McNeeley is that dude or they want more of a bench sniper role for him (my guess is the latter) but there are always various scenarios that will play out from now until the draft.

We are aligned. Bill also wants a “versatile big”.

Around nationals time for Liam to announce, so early April. Nothing to worry about.

Bossi saying not quite a done deal. Some messaging from KU I bet. Bossi is as tied in with the staff as you can get so when he speaks I am listening.
My info was coming from closer to the player’s side here.

Who didn’t see this coming - - -As soon as he asked for his release , supposedly it came down to KU ? Indiana originally. If he was truly that serious about KU - - Indiana no longer his choice should of been automatic, no reason to screw around just come out- --say I’m going to KU. - -Period.
Nike is in deep and look out Kentucky , U Conn , Houston and big others have been talking to him – he says he is keeping his options open - -duh - -ya think ?- all we heard he is a lock , a lock pssst until he is on campus, far from a lock. Bill will get his playes but like is being said now hearing not looking like he lands he - far from a lock
-
We’ll see what happens here but it seems like McNeeley’s camp wants guarantees we won’t give in terms of role. Like sorry bud if Furphy comes back and we land a stud wing in the portal you aren’t starting

Furphy definitely >> for next year at the very least.

Are we trying to dodge tampering accusations or something.

It’s weird, for sure.

It’s a very abrupt change of messaging from the confidence getting put out shortly after the commitment. I find it hard to believe we’d back off given the brutal shooting struggles we witnessed this season
-
You guys can be homers to this and drink the tea coming out of Naismith drive but it is Ingram all over again.
We can play mcneely and furphy next to each other and still have the stud 2 guard portal pickup.
Why on earth would we be lacking minutes for him….hmm let’s think for two seconds here who plays the 4 spot that I’ve said is GUARANTEED to start next year
U guys are blind to how Self works
-
@rcjhdraft - There have been a number of players who shot well the prior year but come to KU and …. don’t. No guarantees.

Need to keep taking chances on shooters despite potential fails like Timberlake. I believe in Liam’s body of work far more than I did Timberlakes but I also believe that Timberlake and furphy had to shoot with a ton of pressure since they were the only floor spacers on the entire roster.
-
I will never really fault coach for not giving a player a guarantee they will start. Sell in a role for them, yes. Say we have a spot that is theirs for the taking, sure. But if a someone thinks that they don’t need to perform day in and out to get minutes, than they are going to cause problems for the program eventually.
-
@MR11 Does this only apply to incoming recruits or current players in the program? We have two that are absolutely cemented for next year so curious your post with regards to that.

Correct - -what ever happened to the dys where you EARNED you spot on the floor. You just don’t walk in with the approach well these guys need me so if they need me I’M STARTING ?
-
Players have more leverage then ever, can leave whenever, make demands now and not just role, $$$$$$.
Hopefully this all works out in KU’s favor in the end but this is definitely a typical recruitment these days if it’s really open
-
@MR11 I agree.
Speaking from strictly optics (because I don’t have any inside info or know anything about the agreement), the one time it appeared that coach had guaranteed starting and a position was Josh Selby. As I recall, throughout the season, it looked like he wasn’t ready for primetime, but he played (and then left prematurely).
Since then, I haven’t seen any player’s position/PT look the same (playing and performance grossly misaligned).
There are some freshmen and transfers who have come in and started and played in that position all year (most recent freshmen: Grady Dick; most recent transfer, Hunter) but in all recent cases, the performance totally justifies the position/PT.
BTW, I give huge props to ElMarko because he moved from starting to backup (so, clearly, no guarantee), but he continues to play hard and I think has a big ceiling. I don’t know if I’m in the minority, but I hope he stays. I think he’ll be a successful Jayhawk in a year or maybe two in Self’s system.

agree, this dam portal and the volume of NIL $ $ $ wise has done in College sports
-
NIL $$$$$ vs guaranteed playing time. KU has great NIL, but some guys think “one and done” is more important. Decisions, decisions. “Can I play myself into a guaranteed starting role AND leave after a year?”
-
I guess my stance would be why does being a previous years starter on the 6th best big 12 team mean you have a guaranteed spot for next year?
If no spot is guaranteed to new recruits why is it guaranteed to guys in the program. Just because you are in the program a year prior shouldn’t mean you get the nod automatically.

Alabama is one to watch as well. Could still be Kansas.
-
@BShark they got the Pepperdine kid
-
@Crimsonorblue22 - Good. Can he play in the 2024 NCAAT?
-
@Gorilla72 no, why is that good?
-
@Crimsonorblue22 - JK. Could use him though.
-
@Gorilla72 I was wondering why u thought it was good Bama got him.
-
@Crimsonorblue22 - well, shoot. I lost real of the convo. I thought it was said KU got him.
