@approxinfinity or Huggins?

Good Coach. 42, which is another advantage there as well. I’m wondering if Goff would be willing to forgive his baggage at LSU.
-
@kuballin10 20 Conference Championships. 9 Conference Tournament Championships. 2 National Championships. Hall of Fame.
It’s difficult to fire a guy with that resume. Every coach, every program goes through slack times. I think we need to be a little more patient.
-
I think it’s obvious he’s on his way out…has been said a bunch by guys in the know.
5/7 years 2nd round exit
He’s propping up guys that aren’t that great and has tied himself to these 3 guys he thinks are great. That’s a bad sign with regards for his eye for talent and elevating all his players not just a select few

Difficult??? There is no one coaching that has anything close to that resume. Hurley has the 2 titles, but no track record of sustained success. Never mind that he’s an unpleasant human being, at least anywhere near a basketball court…

There are two complaints with Self.
- Roster construction. Always been a problem. Particularly egregious this year, and since 2021-2022. 1a. Talent evaluation. We dont seem to be picking the right portal guys. Hopefully Self sees a pattern here as he is relatively new at it. I give Self a pass here to be honest, Timberlake to me was the worst transfer that got rotation minutes under Self. Nobody on this roster is that bad, though Storr is close. Hard to compare. Havent looked but would guess Timberlake got twice as many minutes.
- Minute distribution. Less of a problem historically, with a few more contentious examples we have kicked around. Nothing on the level of this year, I think.
#1 is forgivable, as he built around 3 guys with flaws. #2 is less palatable, as it is clearly not giving us our best chance at success and he is doubling down on #1 by forcing it all the way into February, probably March.
It would be much easier to move on from #1 and believe in next year if #2 were to be fixed.
I know @drgnslayr and others have voiced concerns about development and some other strategic things. I am less concerned about those, though they have merit. Self may still thrive with the right personnel and minute distribution.

There is one guy in New York that can compete with Self’s resume. Maybe not the conference titles, but Pitino has done something Self hasn’t done which is take 3 different schools to a Final Four and has 7 FF’s to Self’s 4. Pitino’s is one of the only resume’s among active coaches that’s legitimately comparable to Self’s.

@Texas-Hawk-10 I’m assuming we aren’t counting Gene Auriemma as there isnt nearly the parity on the womens side?
-
@approxinfinity Kansas basketball needs a gm, but Bill would never give up full control.
-
I’d take Pitino in a heartbeat, but I think he is also on the cusp of retirement. Easily one of the most underrated coaches of his time. I feel like he is seldom talked about. I 100% like the Will Wade idea, him getting in trouble at LSU was for paying players obviously something Bill has already been busted for here. Not to mention it’s perfectly legal now
-
Pitino is a decade Bill’s senior. He’s not leaving the Johnnies
-
I wouldn’t take Pitino at this point because of his age, and his legacy does have blemishes on it because of the vacated national title and his failures in the NBA. However, what he’s doing with St. John’s right now is very impressive and shows he is still among the elite coaches in the game today.
-
That St. John’s team would blow us out
What’s Wade’s philosophy on both ends? I don’t know much about him
-
Nate Oats
-
-
That’s not fair. Pitino is an ageless vampire.
-
I can understand why Pitino rubs people the wrong way but college basketball is definitely more entertaining with him in it.
Self is at a min staying through next year, so realistically we are talking about Pitino at 74 being hired. Boeheim made it to 78 which I could see Rick passing but probably best case getting 5-6 years out of him. Could honestly only see KU considering him as a fallback option.
Oats and Wade are both options I would be OK with, but I’m not pushing Self out the door for them.
-
@MR11 I am as I think next year we have the talent but it’s the same crap offensive system which guys never pick up quickly at least to bills expectations
-
@kuballin10 I still think with the make up of next years roster you are gonna see change
-
@SlimShaddy54 you meant next year’s or next years’? i can’t wait that long, man…
-
If we’re seriously going to consider Pitino, why not just go all in on coaches we love to hate and grab Coach K out of retirement. We can rebrand him as Coach KU
-
@HoraceZontal oh my god. Im glad I read this AFTER i slept so i have a full 16 hours to try to forget it.
-
@SlimShaddy54 I hope so but Bill is stubborn. He’s gonna take DP and have him feeding the 4th best offensive player in the post to start and finish games
We won’t get out and run unless behind by double digits
It will be more walk it up and “run the offense” but be careful because even if you take an open shot if it is one Bill deems was a “bad shot” you’ll end up on the bench at the next horn

Nobody is seriously saying Pitino should replace Self. It started with asking if anyone else a comparable resume to Self and Pitino is the one guy that’s still active with a comparable resume.

I’ve read the thread. You are correct — that is where it started. And then it took a bit of a detour. Preparing for who’s next is important, but I find the dump Self talk to be a bit silly — as was my proposal of Coach KU

If you’ve read the entire thread, you also know there’s rumors that Self may not be here too much longer by his own choice. His health, and his dislike of NIL are two big reasons why many believe he’ll be retiring in the near future (next 2-3 years). Ignore the people who say fire Self because that’s not happening and those are also the people who rarely, if ever, have anything positive to contribute to discussions and will devolve any discussions to one of two or three talking points they repeat ad nauseum.
For those not in the group, most of us acknowledge that Self retiring from Kansas seems like a more and more realistic option these days. Discussing credible options is something valid because it may be reality very soon. There are several viable options right now depending on the direction Goff wants to go. So discussion of the merits of guys like Will Wade, Nate Oats, Chris Beard, and whoever else’s name would pop up have genuine merit at this time.
-
I agree with you. Thus my comment on how it’s important to plan for the future. Not sure why you feel the need to recap the discussion we both read or otherwise lecture me.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 you framed that very well.
-
@Texas-Hawk-10 So true , No way is KU going to fire Coach Self , he will go on his own terms. Now I feel that this could happen soon like after next year wouldn’t be surprised but he is never going to be run out
-
Give me Texas Tech’s coach next year

Felt like Bill Self WAS KU Athletics for a good stretch. Back when we sucked at other sports. He was always calm and well spoken and reasonable in a time where other larger than life coaches seemed like ungracious turds. Was easy to put all our faith in Self for a long time. Even when the recruiting violations landed, it felt like Self and us against the world. Other big programs doing the exact same shit and getting off scot free.
Bill and KU Bball were one and the same for a long time.
So, it’s hard to not think about things in that context, I get it. But Bill himself said “you need to look at things in 5 year chunks, maybe less than that now”. And that’s a 2 way street. How he’s seeing the job, and how the job (and us) are seeing him.
