2024 Portal Madness Thread

Comes from P5 program, developed 3 years, started 2 straight years. Potential NBA prospect if the cards fit down the line. Good positional size, videos I’ve seen made his standing reach look more Kevin then KJ. Athletic enough to finish above the rim in transition & around the rim on cuts/plays at the basket. One of the top defenders in the Pac-12, fills the stat sheet a lot like Kevin did (4+ boards, 3 assists). 3-point shot is okay/not great % wise, shot 36% as a Soph. I see some step backs, stopping and shooting in transition, pull-ups. His mechanics are better then Kev that took all day to get into his shot.
There’s rumor a Big-12 program offered him an NIL deal already (could be KU, I don’t know).
This is one that seems to fit a lot of boxes Self looks for. Wing size, defends, can make plays at all 3 levels. I’ve also seen that Kobe was not the best fit at USC and perhaps he’d see growth in a new system like Kevin did here.
I see things to like and proven production. Replacing what Kev gave us won’t be easy. I think we need to throw numbers at our issues in the backcourt.
-
Fair, he seems like a solid addition all in all maybe just not the perfect solution to the roster. Generally agree with what you said about throwing numbers at it, we probably need improvements to come from multiple areas and it might be asking too much to fix the roster with one player (and risk them not living up to expectations a la Timberlake).
-
Some interesting names in today.
2nd leading scorer from New Mexico- Jamal Mashburn Jr.
Oklahoma’s Otega Oweh, talented athletic guard.
South Carolina’s leading scorer Meechie Johnson.
Ha, Marcus Adams Jr onto his potential 4th team in a year. Briefly at KU, Gonzaga, then BYU. Back in the Portal
-
Marcus Adams also a member of the KU all-time headcase recruiting class

When looking at a 2, there’s 3 skills to look for. Can they shoot the 3? Can they create their own shot? Can they defend? Players entering the portal are not likely to check all 3 boxes. They are likely to check 2 of those 3 though and that’s what this staff has to figure out and balance. Kobe Johnson is a proven defender and a guy that can create his own shot. He’s not a great 3 point shooter and he does have issues with turnovers.
This is the dilemma with portal players, which skill set is being sacrificed?
-
I think we need guys that can play above the rim as well. Juan was rejected by the rim Saturday on what looked like a sad dunk attempt. Kevin wasn’t a dunker, try to find guys with a similar skill set to Ochai and Christian both started as mainly shooters but could drive and throw each other lobs before they were done.

Just…… wow. Won’t he have to sit a year as it’s his 2nd transfer (or is it)?
-
No he won’t have to sit anymore unless they change the rules again. Back in December a court put a temporary stay to the 2-time transfer ruling. Some 2 time transfer guys started playing immediately. Then the NCAA said its allowable through the rest of the season. Everyone is working under the assumption now it won’t be an issue next year either.
-
KD Johnson of Auburn in the portal. Electric Athlete from winning school with tons of experience. Not a shooter though.
-
Micah Peavy of TCU in the portal. Always liked his game. Would be a fit

TCU forward Jacobe Coles in the portal.
Old nemesis Eddie Lampkin in the portal for Colorado. Luke O’Brien in as well. Wonder if we look at him
Tucker Devries in the portal from Drake.
-
Portal approaching 1100 entrants
-
Old friend/commit Tre White back in the portal, leaving Louisville.
Joshua Jefferson of Saint Mary’s in, Soph forward averaged 10 and 6. Didnt play in the tournament for some reason.
Utah St freshman starter Mason Falslev averaged 11 and 4 off 56% shooting. Avg 9 and 5 in 2 tournament games.
-
UCF lost 4 players today
-
1100 entries I see. Wanting play time or better NIL? I wonder if the rating makers at Rivals, etc. are looking at their choices and seeing how right and wrong they ended up being. Furphy is sitting at around 15 in the draft. He’s gotta be gone isn’t he? I am going to watch Edey as a pro to see if he has modern center skills. There are so many mobile big guys from international countries playing now.

Lampkin. So funny. Even my wife, who occasionally watches a KU game with me, recognizes and hates Lampkin. She calls him the troublemaker who quit on his team!
-
Tony Perkins has heard from KU, guard leaving Iowa after avg 14ppg
-
Not a fan of his antics.
-
-
@BeddieKU23 Hard pass on Perkins. Flopper like Joe Toussaint from WVU/TexTech.
-
@focojayhawk another team that teaches it
-
He can score but anyone that learned defense playing for Fran is a lost cause coming to KU

Isaiah Moss begs to differ. He was a more than serviceable off the bench for KU and was a good defender here.
-
Speaking of flopping did anyone notice that Kevin kept begging for calls all year long? Instead of hustling back on D or going for the loose ball he would throw his arms up and look at the ref with a disgusted look - every time there was contact it seemed. That attitude bothered me. Fouled or not if you don’t hear the whistle go hard.
-
Gus Yalden now in the portal. I’m really pissed about this one, I wanted to see him play in Madison. No one knows how good he’ll be but he was a 4 star who didn’t play because of two misdemeanors just before the season started for marijuana and underage drinking. The team was silent on his status all season which was kind of frustrating. Maybe the truth will come out and I’ll realize he shouldn’t be playing at all. But if he can be fixed up he supposedly has a lot of game.
-
@dylans yep, agreed.
-
Washington St guard redshirt freshman Myles Rice in, avg 14ppg. Started both tournament games
-
Kentucky forward Adiu Thiero in, electric athlete
-

that kina surprises me and yet it doesn’t. - - Surprised not more from there
-
Minnesota forward Soph Pharrell Payne in, avg 10 and 6 with 1.4 blks per. Apparently one that got better as the season went on.
-
Wissox, do you know this kid?-- Didn’t travel with the team and didn’t play a minute .I guess he was suppose t help Wisconsin good player -Gus, Yelden-- what can you tell us ?
-
-
@jayballer67 Yalden ‘reshirted’ in part because of underage drinking ticket, a separate time he got caught with weed in his dorm, and then he crashed his moped on campus before the season started. He’s a very skilled below-the-rim PF who likely peeked as a HS soph. He also went to four high schools in four years. Could turn into something, but not worth the risk for KU
-
PJ Haggerty in, Tulsa guard started career at TCU, avg 21ppg this year good for 13th nationally
-
Danny Wolf, Center from Yale in. Would pursue
-
Reuben Chinyelu of Washington St in. Really intriguing backup big potential.
