It will be pretty hard for me to be excited for next year's team

  • @FarmerJayhawk I’m tired of getting our a$$es beat by KSU and I ain’t pretending it’s okay for a spilt second.

  • @kjayhawks good news for you is we haven’t lost to them at home since I was in junior high and they lost to a not good Cincy team tonight

  • @FarmerJayhawk I’m probably being unreasonable I’m just still ticked off. They did beat us there in 2006

  • I wonder how we’d fare in a competitive Dodgeball league?

  • @nuleafjhawk we don’t appear to be real good as basketball so I’m okay with trying it lol

  • And one thing I’ll add to this, Bill has told people this roster construction is bad. Last spring they wanted to upgrade the 5 spot (emphatic check), replace Jalen (Ope), and add more offensive punch (Ope). This squad is probably 2-3 players short of being elite, and guess what? 2 of them either committed or told the staff they were staying (Ernest, Terio), and another (Spencer Jones) unexpectedly got into grad school at Stanford. So thems the breaks. I expect they’ll have a similar vision this offseason.

I wonder how we’d fare in a competitive Dodgeball league?

come in last, take some hits , just like our Basket ball team lol

  • @kjayhawks If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball…

  • @NormRoberts said in It will be pretty hard for me to be excited for next year's team:

@wissox Kentucky got 2 freshman guards in Rob and Reed who can get a score or make a play.We have guys who need plays made for them. Not enough PLAYMAKERS.Just tired of recruiting second tier guys this is KANSAS and get the best simple.Just go back to 4 around 1.This KJ thing get so hard at times.

Kentucky also doesn’t play any defense. They’re 341st in scoring defense giving up 80 ppg. That’s not a system set up for success in the NCAA Tournament.

  • I’d just love having a team like Kentucky, Cal and all. Let’s see, didn’t we play them?🤔❤🌾💙 If we lose on tues and all you bandwagon fans want Coach fired, maybe Cal’s your man? Those 2 guards scored, I think 31 pts, and I’m pretty sure Dajuan(23) and kevin(12) for 35! Kentucky’s 2 guards had 4 assists combined, kevin 10, Juan, 7, so 17. That was our game.

  • I will also say, that I think KU can absolutely be successful with KJ at the 4. The biggest need is at the 2 spot. Either a playmaker who can PnR with KJ while Hunter camps at the top of the key, or a 3 and D player who can camp in the corner opposite Furphy and let KJ and Hunter run the high-low.

The high-low is the base offense this season, but KU doesn’t have the shooters to space the floor to prevent double teams on the low post player which has resulted in the ball being forced into double teams for a lot of turnovers and bad shots.

Self should have a minimum of 3 more openings this off-season and adding quality bench depth through the portal is tough because most people don’t transfer to come off the bench, but that will likely be the reality for all but one of whoever else Self ends up bringing in through the portal.

  • We can what if all day. Maybe… probably… if we had picked up Ingram and passed on Morris, we would be competing with Houston for the B12 title. But that’s not what happened.

IMHO, Morris was the bigger blow because Self really has excelled with dual-guard teams. He would have taken pressure off DeJuan and probably allowed him to take more 3s and grow his confidence as a shooter. That would have spread the floor and opened up the inside even more.

As things are today, we’re too easy to defend.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I literally said we need guards that can get a bucket and go back to 4 around 1 back to KU basketball because offense can only do so much with KJ and you’re telling me about another teams defense right now? Talking about offense

  • We need to take the cuffs off of Elmarko and start him over KJ. 4 guards tell them to let it fly and see what happens

  • @NormRoberts You’re the one who brought Kentucky into the conversation while singing the praises of their offense while ignoring that their defense really is that bad this season. So trying to model after Kentucky on offense is something that Self’s been there, done that, and didn’t win a title with that style. I’d rather Self copy the formula that’s won himself a couple of national titles rather than any other formula.

Kentuckys defense Sucks- — in the Torney they gonna be in trouble because like was mentioned in some podcaasts the scores have tendencies to be lower high 60’s - -Kentucky can’t guard. They run into a team that has a slowre pace they are in trouble

No way in hell do I want anything to do with any Kentucky BS

  • @BShark said in It will be pretty hard for me to be excited for next year's team:

@kuballin10 it’s time to recruit over KJ.

He won’t recruit over Dajuan at all obviously. I think you can build a great team around one of them, not both. And realistically KJ IS a center.

Personally, I wish he would recruit over DH if he had to pick one of the two.

  • There’s nothing earth shattering here. Some of you haven’t been excited for KU basketball for years. Nothing worse than a 4 seed since 2008. Twitiots saying Bill Self has lost it. Some here saying he basically is so stubborn that we’re doomed. We won a national championship 2 years ago. May have won one 4 years ago. Played in the FF 6 years ago. Doesn’t sound like too many reasons for pessimism there.

If they do have a down year next year some of you will be out here bragging about how you told us. How you it pains you but how you were really right predicting we would suck. You’ll be so proud of yourself. Or maybe you’ll leave.

  • @wissox What’s insane is that since seeding began in 1979, KU has only been lower than a 4 seed 5 times in the years KU has made the NCAA Tournament and not since the 2000 tournament, and only three times in the last 35 years including 1989 when KU didn’t play in the tournament. The sustained level of success at KU during that time is insane.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I’m sure you know, but 6 seed in 1988!

  • Calm down, people. If any non-KU people are reading this page their laughing… and rightly so. What this page really shows is we are spoiled rotten fans. We are crapping in our shorts because we are a 3-seed. Sure, we aren’t used to that. We also aren’t used to being in this position of being a team that has been beaten up by the NCAA for almost a decade with their b*llshit fake case where they somehow know more than the DOJ.

Self has vented frustration and it’s mostly where he shows relief because he’ll be able to recruit better again.

The idea of firing Self says everything. It’s starting to feel like Alabama football in here. I remember reading all those crying fans wanting Saban’s head on a stick because he only won 6 NCs. This is the type of crap that starts making a HOFr want to quit.

We have a team literally glued together based on only one idea; sign the best individual players we could get. Few top tier players want to play at a school in the cross-hairs of the NCAA.

Concerning this team… moving forward… anything is possible. We know we aren’t winning the league this year. What are our chances in March? Not so different than other years. The luck of drawing a good path in March will be crucial (as usual), and it’s all about us being healthy and playing good at the end. We could easily get knocked out in the first weekend, or go on a nice run. It’s the same for the rest of the D1 teams. Anyone can win and anyone can lose… just ask Purdue last year.

We never recovered from losing whats-his-name, the Texas guard who had off-court problems. Imagine if that didn’t happen and he had the year many of us felt he was capable of.

Everyone ragging on Juan. Seriously, people. You aren’t happy because he doesn’t just shift into a different player to meet our current needs. Had we kept the Texas guard Juan would be having a stellar year… doing what he’s good at… assists.

Let’s remember this entire season… not only the dud games like UCF. Has any other team won as many big team games as us? I guarantee you, no one wants to draw Kansas in March Madness.

The real problem we have is lack of consistency. This team can beat the best and lose to the worst. Yes, Hunter’s perimeter defense is awful. Yes, KJ has limited offense. Yes, Furph’s magic trey isn’t dropping right now. Yes, we get limited points out of Juan. Yes, Kevin’s trey isn’t falling. Yes, our bench is the weakest we’ve ever had under Self. I think it’s our weak bench that has hurt us the most, especially creating consistency issues.

This team is tired. Anyone can see that. So the same people who think Self needs to go probably also blame our guys for not being in shape. All I can say is we have more uneducated posters in here. How many of you guys played basketball that ran at this pace? It’s not something you can imagine until you’ve done it. I’ll prove my point by pointing to the world’s best basketball platform, the NBA. Our starters are playing more minutes than most top NBA players, and they play a 48-minute game spread out over more time. More timeouts, too. And we do not have all the benefits the NBA has with 365-day training, diets, etc. Plus, there is a reason why people say the NBA doesn’t play defense. These guys are pacing their seasons. That’s why I don’t watch NBA until June.

You have to start talking less and listening more. Watching games closer. BYU had the perfect game plan. They ran a grueling offense. Probably averaged 8 picks per possession. They beat us down. They knew we didn’t have a bench.

The smart move forward, as a fan base, is to support these guys and accept whatever happens this year. We are limited more than usual with this team. Push players to do better but be respectful. Don’t have typical insane expectations with this team. They may just surprise you in the tourney. Maybe.

  • Really good points drgnslayr , as has been brought up bottom line is this fan base is beyond spoiled. Couple of questions to ask here to people who is doubting Coach Self and his recruiting & Coaching abilities again. -Can someone please tell me what our overall record has been since Coach Self has been here ? - -How about how many Conference championships we won in a row ?- - -How many losing records do we have against any of the teams in this Conference , how many of those teams has a winning record against us ? - Let’s see wondering what it takes to be name to the HOF , wonder what they judge that on ?- -Always thought that was based on Coaching Ability , Your teams success rate while your at the helm , Things like NCAA titles, Conference titles , How many players have went to the NBA while Coach Self has been here? - -

I get it , I perfectly understand now since we are having such a bad year -21-8 , hmmm wonder how many other teams in the Nation would die to have tat kind of record ? - just curious. Let’s see how many consecutive 20 plus win seasons have we had under this Coach who has NO IDEA on how to Coach and we are much , much better at Coaching this team and making better decisions at then Coach Self who knows absolutely nothing about the game. Wonder what Coach Self’s overall winning percentage is since he has been our Coach? - -Hmm what’s KU’s winning percentage at the Phog since this guy who plays favorites?

So let’s see would love for someone to ell me who exactly are we replacing Juan with at PG that is better ? - -OH WAIT I know - - how about El Marko ya that will work a kid that didn’t even attempt a shot for what -like 3 games in a row. Hardly looked at the basket during those times, couldn’t get rid of the ball fast enough , but yet ya he needs to be the starting pg. - -NO , NO , wait is it to late to see if there is ANYWAY Remy could possibly sneak in and save the day- don’t ask Coach though cause he doesn’t know squat about the game or players.

Are we having a down year? tell me who doesn’t have a down yr ? Hell many multiple teams have multiple down years. - So KJ should be on the bench , but he is not -Bill what the hell, what you doing? you better ask these other Coach’s that know so much more then you who should be playing the 4 in front of KJ. Agre KJ is NOT a good rebounder , not a Beast on the offensive boards? - - got ya , and yet tell me who on this team IS good at getting offensive rebounds on this team ? - -Sure and the hell not Hunter, he sure ain’t squat offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding he gets mostly because the ball falls in is 7’2 body - -he is by FAR not an aggressive rebounder demanding the ball. - so who you putting in place of KJ that can defend the one through four s well as KJ ? - - go ahead I’ll wait.

Like drgnslayr sure were not gonna be a one seed, hell we may not even be a four, but it all comes down to the draw, the health of the team, how much luck is involved. KU has made the tourney like what 28 yrs in a row? -there are teams that are lucky to make it ONCE PERIOD. yet this Guy Self is horrible, terrible Coaching decisions that play favorites. -The way some here thinks is that the teams we play should just not show up and have us name the score and call it in because we are KU-- umm news flash, doesn’t happen that way.

Wonder how many other teams across the Nation when THEY go play at the opponents gym I wonder how many times the opponents fill the gym when they come. - -That it’s THE GAME of the yr because it’s and you name the team other then maybe Duke, U Conn you name the tea – .EVEY GAME KU plays we can go to an away game and the fan base of the team we are playing averages maybe a half full house if they are lucky and yet when we come - -It’s SRO , because of a guy who can’t Coach and plays favorites lmao. So ya were having a down year, we have limitations a lot mainly due to our bench. I’ll take Juan any day , every day constantly up a the top of the league in assists , steals - -he shouldn’t have to score a lot to run this team, his job is to manage the team facilitate , defend

Sure we may not make a deep run this year, but then w may. - Funny this same Coach that makes such poor Coaching decisions and has no idea and just plays favorites amazing when we make the deep runs never hear anything about who is playing or how he is Coaching then, or nothing about favorites – dam same Coach - -Same players - - Same decisions - -, we are just to dam spoiled

  • Houston and UConn have a total of six losses. Two are to this KU team. This “no good really bad KU team with the crappy PG, no depth and the PF who doesn’t shoot or rebound”.

What a gift that we get to be KU fans and have a down year like this.

  • I am always prepared to be amazed. Go Bill Go!

  • This week is the first time in 3 years that KU has not been ranked in the top 10.

Think about that, we have people being doom and gloom about the future of this program because we aren’t currently a top 10 team.

On top of that how many weeks in a row how many weeks in a row has KU been in the top 25 period ---- many , many

ya , just don’t know how this is possible cause we have a Coach that does not have a clue , no Coaching ability , bad decisions , and plays favorites. Has a PG that isn’t squat, and a 4 that should be coming off the bench lmao

  • Bill Self has said Hunter Dickinson will be doing senior night festivities and Juan will not because he is planning staying for next season. So we are not getting a PG for next season.

It’ll be fine as long as we replace KJ

  • So what are the chances that Hunter comes back next year?

  • @patoh3 still think far more likely than not.

  • @patoh3 probably can make more here than in the G-League and over seas.

  • Hmm, next year. It’s always exciting to see the freshmen. I hope that Bidunga will be bouncy and smart enough to at least get on the floor. Currently he’s the only assured back up big, assuming The Big Dick stays. Hey, I just thought that up on the fly. Kinda works? Ha.

Anyway, with his limited minutes, Let him go ballistic and try to block or destroy anybody approaching the rim. Could be entertaining,

If Furphy stays, that’ll be about the only other exciting player to watch. I do like Hunter. Amazing touch around the hoop. Defense is optional with him within Self’s switcharoo concepts. Gotta be tough for a slow 7-2 dude. Isn’t that weird btw? Self’s adapted his offense when needed for personnel, but has he changed defenses?

The rest? We know what Dajuan is, and isn’t. Same with KJ. I can’t say I have faith in Elmarko becoming a great starter by next year.

So who’s gonna score with McCullar gone? could we see an all time low in offensive output for KU?

I hope they are already recruiting in the portal.

Then please dump at least half the shit ton of non scholarship dudes on the bench for real players who can contribute.

I hollered enough before this season started about the desperate need for shooters (I must be a genius). May as well start that chant now. Recruit some freaking shooters, Bill!!! Fer crissakes.

So, unless we strike it rich in the portal, we could be way worse next year, sadly.

  • @kjayhawks I just wonder why he is doing the Senior Day speech if he is planning on coming back. Unless he looking for a pat on the back for returning or just in case he decides to pursue other opportunities. I don’t think KMC was planning on returning, so I understand him doing it. He could have been done like Juan and say I am coming back so I am not doing the Senior night activities.

  • Kevin gave a speech last year right?

  • @patoh3 I assume the difference is that Hunter is at least going to see what his options are but is likely coming back because he doesn’t expect those options to beat returning.

If Elmarko stays and makes some strides, we will have someone who can break down the defense off the dribble and that is the main thing this team is currently missing.

McDowell has also shown promise and could be a solid rotation piece next year.

Only thing missing would be a starting level shooter and if that is his sole focus of the transfer portal, I would think Bill could land someone that can contribute. (No way we miss on this type of player two year in a row right??)

A 8 man rotation of Harris, Elmark, McDowell, Transfer shooter, Furphy, KJ, Hunter, and Flory seems pretty exciting to me. Now if Furphy isn’t back, I am less optimistic.

  • @BShark yes

  • In a 247 article, HD indicated his speech didn’t preclude him from returning next year. The speech was “just something I wanted to do”. Apparently he hasn’t decided yet?
