McCullar out vs Baylor

  • @DanR Pretty decent win I think when we play without two guys, one the leading scorer in the league.

Kansas gets all the calls they say. Not tonight. Baylor shot more FT’s. Foul #'s were even I think. Bill Self is a great coach. Scott Drew is too.

  • I think drew has it in his head he can’t win here!

  • @DanR If I know Scott Drew they did pray, but if I know Scott Drew he didn’t pray that they’d win either.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I think he has more losses in the building than Self, believe he is 1-20

  • The chances of us winning without Juan and Kevin have to minuscule

  • Sure sounds like were gonna be without McCullar and quite possibly Juan both Monday - - Geez- -McCullar hasn’t practiced so sure sounds like he is out. - Then how much is Juans ankle gonna swell up in the next 48 hours - -we are so beat up

  • Bill is extremely unhappy with the mental errors it sounds.

  • I’m thinking maybe Nick had high bball iq at the end there. Way harder to make a wide open clutch shot than a guarded one. Give them all the time in the world to think about it. This is also why Nick takes every guarded 3 he can. Knows instinctively they are better shots.

  • Ugly win, but it’s a win. KU only scored 41 points over the last 30 minutes of the game.

-17 in rebounds, only 11 assists on 24 made FG’s, Elmarko played 21 minutes and did not attempt a shot officially and Parker took 2 FG’s in 8 minutes. 2 FG’s attempts in 29 minutes from the bench is just terrible.

Also, why did KU not adjust to the drive and kick Baylor ran ad nauseum tonight? KU was lucky Baylor was shooting like garbage tonight too.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 this team just looks ugly 90% of the time at this point. Tonight is a little bit different in terms of missing our leading scorer and I’m glad we won a gutsy performance. But my gosh you are a 100% correct this maybe the worst bench in the Self era. 2019 and 2012 come to mind but I think this worse. I know people compare this team to the 19 team a fair amount but I think this team would destroy that team by a wide margin.

  • I really hope we can go undefeated at home this season, feels like it’s been way too long since that happened. I believe we have 3 games left against Texas, BYU and KSU. We have definitely already played our toughest home games on paper but we all know how this team loves to play down to competition. Oddly enough I think that 2019 team was the last to go unbeaten in the Phog.

  • Self is really unhappy with Timberlake. Who’s next up after El Marko? Should Jank get some run?

2019 was a very young team. Dotson, Grimes, Agbaji, and McCormack were all freshmen that season, Marcus Garrett was a sophomore, and Dedric Lawson was a first year player for Self. Lagerald Vick was the only upper classmam in tge rotation that season that came up theough Self’s system. That team also had more depth than this team because they had to deal with Doke’s injury and Vick getting kicked off the team. That team had Ochai Agbaji redshirting to start the year. That team also had the better bench by far because there was at least some production on a nightly basis.

There’s a reason Timberlake was at Towson and not a high major. KU is still going to need another shooter next season, and it would be preferable if that shooter came from another high major program where his shooting stats should translate pretty well.

  • @Gorilla72 He was mad at Nick for having too quick of a trigger after his first 3 make. In the inside access Self was saying move the ball for 20 seconds. He also was the guy that gave up multiple corner 3s, we were fortunate they missed the last 2. He left his man and over helped on the first and didn’t switch on the second attempt. Both silly mistakes this far into the season as a senior. Elmarko I thought was decent defensively tonight, he was credited with 4 steals tho a few of them the ball got knocked to him luckily. But gosh his offense numbers are like he wasn’t on the floor. In 21 minutes he had zero shot attempts and finished with 1 assist and 1 point. That’s unacceptable imo. I honestly am wondering if Jank shouldn’t see some minutes here with how unproductive our guards are off the bench. Hard to believe he could be any worse on the average night.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 I don’t remember that team having much of a bench at all with KJ Lawson, a D3 caliber player getting minutes. Vick was the best player on that team and Doke when he was healthy. That could’ve been a solid group had Vick not gone nuts and Doke gotten hurt. Those two things killed the depth.

  • Short handed victory! Over a good team no less. Hard to complain about that. Go Hawks!

Coincidence that we’ve beaten two top teams without McCullar?

Seems like teams are game planning for Furphy now. He’ll need to adjust and figure out how to get open, or drive the lane more.

  • Wish we had another option besides Nick. 3 mistakes in the last 14 seconds and lucky they didn’t cost them. Shouldn’t be in this situation with him. You wouldn’t know he’s been in College this long with the kind of mental errors that he continues to make

  • @BeddieKU23 youve put it as nicely as possible.

  • Vick could just take off and fly like no other, but I think partially that was because he was high most of the time.

  • @approxinfinity

I really did try. Rewrote several times. You have Kev out, Juan get injured and then you have a 6th year guy that should just get it, but he doesn’t

  • @wissox

Supreme enigma here for sure. Sucks how his tenure ended

  • I see ESPN scheduled another loss for Monday. Thanks

  • @BeddieKU23 TT is a ranked team. We’ll be fine.

If we were playing Mississippi Valley State we’d be screwed.

  • @nuleafjhawk

Appreciate your optimistic view. So much going against us tomm

  • Any news on Juan? I feel like Kevin will be out tomorrow no matter what. I hate to say it but the ball movement is better without Kevin, think he was dribbling too much and trying for hero ball far too often.

  • @kjayhawks

Self said after he didn’t know but that he definitely did something to it good. Tough kid so we shall see

That season was weird because KU had so many different starting line ups due to various issues. Marcus Garrett did come off the bench for most of the season. David McCormack came off the bench most of the season. Mitch Lightfoot and Charlie Moore were also main bench players.

I’m not going to claim that bench was among Self’s best, but it was better and deeper than this season’s bench.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Ya that team looked strong early on when everyone was healthy mentally and physically. Won the NIT vs Tennessee and Vick was a projected lottery pick. The injuries and Grimes, Vick flat out quitting on the team half way thru the season. I remember Charlie having some good games.

I am expecting Juan to be out. Nothing announced yet.

  • @BShark gut feeling?

    @BShark gut feeling?

Early intel. Not sure he even traveled with the team. Was a pretty bad injury. Surprised he went back in. He broke some panels when he punched a video board.

Thankfully after tomorrow night KU has like 1 game in the next couple weeks.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 Hope he is able to play somehow. TOUGH kid.

  • If without Juan we are talking Elmarko handling the ball with Timberlake and walk-ons. Doesn’t get any worse then this

  • @BeddieKU23 why not jamari?

  • @approxinfinity

If he’s back yeah. Not good still.

  • Kevin and Jamari OUT. Juan playing.

  • Come to find out Johnny only practiced one day last week before Saturdays game because of being sick also. - -If we can get him going ngain tonight be good – -Basically be the good 4 again just like it was before we established as the 5th guy - -not gonna be easy for sure - - kind of sucks

  • Juan punched a video board?

  • @Gorilla72 During the game, he hobbled to the out of bounds area after trying to shoot a reverse layup and when he sat down, he hit it with the side of the hand. It was not a full out punch.

  • Self said today Kev practiced a bit yesterday and would hopefully practice today and be available to play Saturday. Jamari as well.

    fingers crossed

  • Kev hasn’t done anything this week. Might not play Saturday. Gonna be an issue regardless for the rest of the season. With that, we can put a cork in the ceiling of this team if he’s not going to be healthy enough week to week

  • @BeddieKU23 Id rest him Saturday, I honestly think we can beat Texas without him. Heck I’d rest him til the NCAA at this point if it helps him. We are pretty much out of the big 12 at this point anyway. I’m honestly shocked it still seems to be bothering him if it actually is a bruised knee. I’ve done that twice before it is painful and uncomfortable but usually isn’t a long term injury. Obviously there is certain severities of it but this one is one of the most lingering ones I’ve seen or heard of. Worried me it could be something more severe that they are hiding.

  • When HCBS said that Kevin tweaked it against OU, that sounded like something other than just a bruise.

  • @COHawk said in McCullar out vs Baylor:

When HCBS said that Kevin tweaked it against OU, that sounded like something other than just a bruise.

Definitely don’t underestimate a bone bruise. Someone ended up missing an entire NBA season over one, I think last year.

He looked like he was in a very bad way by the end of the OU game unfortunately.

  • Kevin is able to function at a level higher than 99% of everyone, just not the level required of a collegiate basketball star. Pain limits function at some point no matter how tough you are.

I know a gal who’s femur punched thru her pelvis. She was mowing the yard a few weeks after surgery. Toughest human I know. She’s all of 5ft tall and right around 60.

  • @BShark

And Self said his injury is one that won’t heal 100% until rest and recovery allows him to work on rehabbing it back.

Unfortunately sitting out games and practices doesn’t seem like it’s going to fix it, it’s only going to allow him to keep limping along.

There’s a lot to say here but not worth it

  • @BeddieKU23 yep that’s what I’m saying keep him off it and let’s win our home games, whatever happens on the road doesn’t matter
