Hope they see this. Chip time.

I’m not sure he is wrong. Has any recent national champion lost 5 games by 14 pts or more??? We are a fragile team, living on the edge. Almost completely dependent on the 5 starters. If locked in defensively and generating fast break opportunities, with at least 4 starters scoring, we beat anybody. But if one or two, esp. Juan, are having a bad game, we aren’t particularly good. Thin margin between getting knocked out early and winning 3-4 games (don’t see a 6 game winning streak against good competition…).

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 Juan was awful turned it over, loose with the ball and their athletes out man’d him

    Jw was a stud

Gradey was mainly non existent and battling injury

Concerning part Gurley and Hanni said there were 6 uncontested layups first half and there were at least 4 second half so of the 20 point blowout - 20 of them were we defended well for 15-20 seconds than gave up back cuts or guys getting blown right by off the bounce

  • Besides the lack of Self and Kevin what this game and a few others this year have shown me is Self needs to overhaul the roster a bit this offseason. I believe he will fwiw. Pissed Bill will be back.

  • @DCHawker I doubt anyone ever has. That’s a rough number. It makes ya not wanna really believe in the other metrics and numbers. I think the net skews things the RPI didn’t.

  • Bottom line? You can maybe play like that for about 5 min in the first round. After that you go home. I hate the gassed/tired narrative with a passion. I was 20… I wasn’t tired

  • @approxinfinity let’s start with team 1. And ya may say “whoever that is”. But team 1 planning is these Jayhawks. And who knows how to handle them. Hopefully Bill

  • @BShark I a 100% an agree with him, I felt the same way last aswell. I got a bad feeling with the favorable road we got last season we are in for a very tough one this season.

  • We may be all needing to temper expectations and say that winning the league outright was actually impressive for this crew. I think they are so fun to watch when they are energized. Always thought that, all season. But absolutely horrid when they are not. Idk how ya teach them that. The losses obviously haven’t. Gotta hope CS has the secret. But idk. He’s just a man

  • This game left a bad taste in my mouth.

  • @kuballin10 Juan made the all tourney team with jwill. You must’ve missed the first 2 games since you just showed up tonight?

  • JWil should be MVP. Dammit

  • I’m sure I’m not the only one who had the thought about halfway through the second half “I hope Bill Self isn’t watching this because if he didn’t have a heart attack before, he might have one now.”

  • @Crimsonorblue22 he dominated the first two games was aggressive and looked to score. That is the Juan we need to win a title and same for kj who catches at the free throw line and needs to look to score not pass.

Tonight Juan was bad. He won’t be great all 6 games but he can’t he this bad either. Elite long athlete teams we will struggle against.

Need some good matchups like last year

  • @kuballin10 yep I know that! Just wanted to let you know how good he was since you never mention that! He can’t dish to guys that can’t catch or get open either.

  • That maybe the worst played game by a PG in decades here the truth be told. He got a few garbage time layups where Texas tried not to foul. 4 assists, 4 turnovers, 1 rebound and 0 steals. Hopefully that gets it outta his system. He has played great the last month.

I hate that narrative too. Both teams had to play 3 games in 3 days.

Nevertheless, shots were short all day. Jumps were not as high. Guys got beat. Balls were fumbled and went through hands. They had a hard time just getting open for passes.

If not physically, then mentally, they were not sharp today. Not sure why— maybe it was the unusual lineups. Maybe coaching. Maybe it was Texas.

The latter is the hardest to stomach. But 3 weeks from today, if they are talking about their next game on Monday, then today’s result will be a bit easier to understand.

  • @bskeet Right that was my thinking Texas played the late game last night and also was down a starter so it’s hard for me give into those excuses. Having BS gone definitely hurt, Norm has done great for sure but there’s a reason he got fired from 2 head coaching jobs. I think some of it is Texas is just a match up nightmare for us. Kinda like how Kentucky spanked Tennessee twice. I think with will struggle with tall athletic teams like Tennessee and Texas.

  • @bskeet yeah that isn’t even a narrative it’s ignorance.

    1. Texas has a bench we don’t

    2. Texas is long and athletic - we aren’t besides udeh whos long but lost and kj who’s a quick leaper but not long. JW and Gradey aren’t great side to side quickness

    3. they beat us without their best player. Imagine us beating them without jw or juan (say we had Kevin).

UT, Houston, Bama legit final 4 teams

Texas IS NOT making the final four – you can take that to the bank, mark it down not happening. - They are going to run acrosss an athletic team that will eat them alive

  • @jayballer67 before Beard went thru his stupidity I thought that was a championship caliber team. They stil are but coaching inexperience will do them in.

  • @bskeet anything can happen once you pop the lid off the “if” bucket. Shots were short for one team, guys didn’t jump as high, for one team. Rebounds didn’t happen for one team… You’re absolutely right. This game doesn’t matter “if”. But I see patterns and I don’t see 6 games where this doesn’t happen again. And it’s okay. Sometimes you just aren’t that good. So are 341 other teams.

  • KU imo isn’t as talented as Texas or Baylor arguably KSU in terms of Jimmy and Joes. But we have the best coach hands down.

they have inconsistencies - when they run up against team that matchs length/height they are in trouble- - somebody like Duke Lively and Fel - would eat them up right now - don’t beleive me all you have to do is watch Duke now compared to early in the year–that team is dangerous

that is the biggest problem and not to proud to admit it - - Texas is just more athletic

  • @jayballer67 Dook looks to be peaking at the right time with 8 going on 9 straight wins. Which sucks, I’m worried we already peaked we have lost 2 or 4 right now.

  • @jayballer67 oh it doesn’t matter that they are more athletic. It matters only that they are more athletic and actually played like they cared about being there. Minus JWil

  • @jayballer67 for sure I’m a realist, if Self has Baylor’s or Texas’s Roster he’s winning the NC this season. Which in away is sad to say. I’m just ready for the investigation to be over with so we can start recruiting again. The way I look at since I’ve been watching KU since the mid 90s KU has had the best overall player and team in every match up all year outside of few final four games and Durant at Texas about 90% of the time. Since 2018 that had just not been the case. I personally think if we had anyone coaching in 2019 or 2021 we don’t even make the tournament.

  • @cragarhawk did you play D1 bb?

  • @Crimsonorblue22 sure did not. Doesn’t change anything I said. It’s just a defense mechanism. We’ve all seen the difference many times. No reason to bullshit ourselves about it

  • Couldn’t watch the game live, just finished watching the recording. Best thing about this game was I could skip thru the commercials… and the last 20 minutes.

Easy to get all down about it, but I ain’t gonna because…

    • No Bill Self
    • No Kev
    • Gradey last out of locker room by 2 minutes at half, 0-5 3s… something was wrong, probably not much chance of that happening again unless he’s really hurt
    • something wrong with DJ too… not great D and 4/4 TOs to assists, probably not much chance of that happening again either unless he’s really hurt
    • nothing really on the line for us - we won the toughest league in Div1 and almost assuredly still have the overall #1 seed
    • JW is one of the best players in the league

Was it ugly? Oh hell yes. Do I feel any differently about our chances in the Dance compared to before the game? Not one bit… IF everyone is healthy come game time.

If key pieces are not healthy, pretty hard for any team to win. Possibly the most important uncontrollable variable for tournament success.

We played the toughest schedule in Div1 and chalked up by far the most quad 1 wins. Am I down on this team after one meaningless loss? Hell no. Just crossing my fingers for healthy players for the next few weeks.

  • @StLJhawk that’s the issue our starting 5 is the key so they can’t be in foul trouble or hurt otherwise it spells doom.

This team won 7 straight against good competition not too long ago. Definitely dependent on the 5 starters. Never seen such a massive drop off from the moment any starter takes a seat.

  • When we are able to hold teams off we get up by about seven until they wear down. It’s not a dominating type team but we can beat anyone as we have shown. I can also see us getting dominated by a long and hot team and shooting 40 percent all game. It will take heroic stuff to get to the final four.

  • Ugh, that was ugly. It all turned south with about 3 minutes left in the first half. I think we were leading at that point?

Everybody pretty much covered the issues today. The basics to me were pretty basic…we went to the foul line like 6 times? That’s bad. We can’t have both Gradey and Dajuan suck in the same game. Need points from somebody other than Wilson. Boy has Dajuan been sloppy the last few. Bad decision making, too. Gotta nip that in the bud.

Well, I guess Kevin is an important part of the defense! Just an embarrassment with the defensive effort today.

I like how Norm uses the bench. Nice to see some guys get minutes. A bit sad to see that neither Bobby nor MJ have a clue though. Honestly, how can Bobby be this bad? I wince when he has the ball.

But I still smile when Udeh does anything! A ray of sunshine 🙂

    Onward, and hopefully upward.

  • Oh, and when we lose, we don’t f*ck around, we LOSE. It’s true, we have a very thin margin with this team. Most of our cylinders have to be working.

I’m willing to clear my good name. Although @BShark has handled it brilliantly I believe that some unfairly blame me for the last game chat I started causing us to lose. We can overcome the so called curse of Wissox.

    WE GOOD

Nothing personal because I love your posts, but I vote we let BShark start the thread every game thru the NCAA tournament. Not saying it’s you- just trying to cover the bases.

I think we see why Bill uses the bench the way he does. We just don’t have one. He doesn’t want them to embarrass themselves on national television.

  • @Jethro Ya I’m not superstitious person in the slightest. Poor @wissox picked a tough game. That’s is a thing as I said on another thread I thought this Texas club was not only the best in the conference but a championship caliber team going into this season before Beard had his stupidity shine thru. We will have more important things to worry about at 5 friends.

  • Was surprised to see Yes score a few quick 3s early on. Was hoping he would go off for 20 like sometimes a bench player has done against us before. Sure would have been nice to JW carry the load, have a new surprise weapon right before the dance(and help offset his often poor D). Hey a guy can dream, can’t he?

  • @StLJhawk

Yes is such a poor set shot shooter and the ones he missed were bigger then the few he made. He misses way too many shots, mostly wide open, in the flow of the offense where motion and passing have created the opportunity and its maddening. One of the big weaknesses of this team is its shooting and more specifically the lack of outside threats we have outside 2 guys. Juan is hard to include since he doesn’t look to shoot them often. A good example was MJ Rice making a 3 off dribble penetration yesterday. He hadn’t made a 3 since November. Yes is 10/40 from 3 since late January including 5/22 recently, that’s awful. Whether it’s Kev, Yes, MJ or someone else that wing/guard that’s often open on the weakside has killed a lot of good offense all year

  • @BeddieKU23 he aims them in like a kid that can’t handle the weight of the ball. Wish he would square up and shoot with good form, but that isn’t happening this year. We can dream…do you remember what Selden’s shot looked like his freshmen year? Wow what a transformation.

  • @dylans

Yeah Selden had awful form his freshman year and by his Jr year it was money. They didn’t tweak Yes’s shot last off-season so I don’t know. It’s awful to watch especially when it seems like an easy root cause to his problems.

  • Bottom line is Texas is just a terrible matchup for us - - KJ had no answer for Desu inside almost like taking candy from a baby. Not a knock on KJ but just it is what it is.

Teams like Texas in the tourney is teams that are going to give us hell - just bad match ups. Teams to avoid Marquette , Duke , Arizona , Texas -And of course any Cinderella lol

  • Who was the MVP in the tourney ? - -Lt me guess Desu ?

Yup, that was pretty much my main concern going into the season. Shooters, or lack of. Oddly, Last I looked (awhile ago) the team numbers were actually comparable to some of Self’s previous teams.

  • @Jethro oh yes indeed, let the professionals handle it!
