Bill Self for COY

  • Change my mind.

  • I’m good with it, tbh. After losing so much off the title team he probably has a shot at it too.

  • Definitely a victim of his own success with that award. He could win it pretty much every year but it’s hard to say he outperforms expectations when he’s so dang consistent.

  • @benshawks08

100%. He has a narrative they can play up which is important at the right time since Football is over.

  • Was reading an article from CBS sports. Saying that Bill Self should win every COY award there is this year considering everything he lost - - losing 6-8 top players , two 1st round NBA draft Choices , and with Wilson & Harris the only two returning players that averaged over 2.1 ppg now on current roster. - Makes a very valid /solid point

Talked about how KU was the only one that didn’t receive a 1st place vote in the beginning of season - - Bill just being Bill - - really good chance of winning the BIG 12 or sharing for the 17th time in his 20 years at KU - -good GOD. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • He’s got to win the league outright for me to be convinced.

Terry should be up for it. Tang should be up for it. Oats would have if he wasn’t on the verge of turning the Alabama program into 2000 Baylor. Could make an argument for Painter as well.

But that is essentially the list. If Tang wins out and keeps that team to 7 losses pre-conference tourney he should get it. But they could easily drop 3 of these next 4 games. Baylor favored tonight. And then they still have to go win in Stillwater and Morgantown.

  • Billy Donovan didnt win it in 2005 or 2006, fwiw.

  • Even Fran said Self should be getting consideration for national COY this year.

Another name I haven’t heard mich in this conversation that I think would get so serious NCOY consideration is Shaka Smart.

I think the front runner at the moment should probably be Chris Collins at Northwestern. That is probably the hardest P5 job out there and he has them ranked in late February and seemingly on the verge of locking in their second ever NCAA Tournament appearance.

  • The Naismith COY since 1989 is a voting process and similar to the Heisman Trophy it’s subject to personal beliefs or feelings instead of just facts. Is there a prevailing east coast bias for instance. I don’t know if the Atlanta Tipoff Club has made the award a stale and diminished event like the Heisman has. I can’t think of a coach who will be able to surpass Self’s sustained excellence. When Rick Pitino recently lost to KU he said Bill has no weakness in his in game coaching that can be exploited.

  • 3 starters, first 2 guys off the bench, 70% present of the scoring gone but a chance to go into March with a better record in a tougher conference this season. COY anywhere else in America and should be here aswell.

  • I vote for Self. Coming off a national championship in a rebuild year and very possible we could be the #1 seed in March… all without a legit 5? Are you kidding? Give Self any team in our league for a year and he’d have them playing at the top by the end of the season.

I do give credit to many coaches, especially in the Big 12 since I watch most of it. Tang, Dixon, Terry, Huggins, Otzelberger… we are so fortunate to have a league this tough and it starts with coaching!

When Fran even promotes Self… that should say enough! lol He even promoted Self tonight in the KSU/Baylor game.

  • Calipari was Coach of the Year 3 times just like Coach K. Bill Self was Coach of the Year once. Accolades, Schmackolades.

  • Ya know…here’s another thing, not a measurable COY metric but worth a lot: he seems to be a pretty kind, level-headed guy. Sure fans of other blue bloods or rivals find plenty of reasons to hate him, but as far as I can tell he doesn’t generate nearly the level of abject disdain folks like Coach K and Cal and Pitino seem to inspire.

  • @Jayblaze I can never tell if that’s real or just my KU blinders. I know the investigation stuff got a few folks off the bandwagon, including some of our own fans. I do see references to that and him being a cheater. He’s definitely more personable than K, Cal, or Pitino ever have been. Has that ah shucks kind of demeanor that can be disarming even to those looking for a reason to hate him.

  • @benshawks08

Now that you mentioned how the world might see Self vs KU fans, Self probably won’t win the award if the discussion of the unresolved NCAA case becomes part of the narrative. He did in fact take a 3-game suspension this year because of it. I’m not expecting he wins the award but he should based on what’s he’s done this season. I’m expecting it goes to the guy that’s overachieved the most for one season like usual.

  • @benshawks08 Indeed. I do spend quite a bit of time in this here echo chamber!

Not sure where I heard it , might of been from Frannie himself last night. - -They said Bill is as good of a Coach as to where he would tell you - - give me your guys - -I’ll beat ya – Give me my guys - - I’ll beat ya He is just that dam good of a Coach

  • Has anyone else noticed that HCBS has a pregame habit of blowing into his cupped hands when he comes out of the tunnel? Every time I see him emerge, he does it. Ritual or superstition?

  • @Gorilla72 I’d say ritual at this point, he has always done it.

  • Both!

  • I agree, both

Definitely both. It’s always been there.

  • Not to take anything away from Tang but he only retained 2 players from last years roster, he didn’t take a 14-17 team and coach them up. He used the portal to build his roster. TJ did the same thing last season in Ames and hasn’t really retained that magic this season. Now that shouldn’t impact this years COY but let’s pump the brakes before y’all build a statute of him. Not sure I’ve seen a team lose as you said 70% of its scoring, 3 starters and the first 2 guys off the bench and end up back as a number 1 seed after winning it all. Winning the toughest conference in the land by a few games, not sure I’ve seen it before or will see it again is my point.

Above is my response to KSU fans all the sudden thinking Tang is better than Self. ESPN radio talked about how he was hands down the greatest regular season coach of all time which I agree with. I personally don’t think in a single elimination tournament you go off of it entirely. The tournament is a lot about viewership on the men’s side. If they changed it like the women’s tournament and had teams host the first 2 rounds you wouldn’t see the upset we do. I’ve always said do that and then have the sweet 16 be double elimination at a neutral site. Then you know who the best team is most years. Downside to that is we probably don’t win it last season but probably have more titles with the 07,08,11,13,16 and 20(if they played it) teams playing.

  • @kjayhawks

It just shows how much KU rules the Big 12. Anytime any of these teams has a possible bragging point they go overboard because they know it will be brief… the rare time we don’t win the league then suddenly another team OWNS the Big 12 after only winning one. If another coach does well, then he’s the best. It’s laughable.

I like Tang and I like his attempt to purify the nasty farm boys… I think he should be recognized but that doesn’t mean picking him over Self.

Their coach of the year fantasy is better than their “we’re a football powerhouse for winning the conference” fantasy. You win 1 game against a team you lost to earlier in the season. You’re passed over for the playoffs, then you get humiliated by Alabama. Yet, you take a barnstorming tour all over the state, dragging your conference trophy around even though you just embarrassed yourself on national tv. The most irrational, ignorant fanbase in all of sports.

  • @Jethro you don’t wanna get me going on them jokers being a football power house. Literally since the Archduke of Austria was assassinated in 1914 to start world war 1 they have 4. Yes 4 conference championships, in damn near a 110 years. Wichita State hasn’t played a down of football in my lifetime and can say the same thing.

  • Self absolutely deserves B12 COY, National COY I don’t know about. Self should absolutely be in that conversation, but I think Shaka Smart might have my vote this year because of what Marquette has done compared to their expectations this season.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

What are your thoughts on why Shaka didn’t make big success at UT?

  • @drgnslayr I think a lot of it was he never found a system that worked for him at Texas and his team’s were seemingly always on the younger side. He always had good recruiting classes (top 10 basically every year) and his system seemed fairly complex so he likely needed more experienced players than what he had so he likely needed to simplify his system to adapt, but never did so.
