Triage Hawks vs Fightin Rodney Terrys Game Thread

  • Wish I could have caught the game, seems like I missed a good one.

I usually like reading the game thread to get a feel for how the game went… not so much tonight, too much petty bickering sucked a lot of the fun out of the thread tonight for me. And this in spite of us leading all game and winning! can’t imagine if we’d have lost, jeez. We’re all hawk fans here aren’t we?

Anyways, good guys win again and bring on the Okies!

  • @wissox said in Triage Hawks vs Fightin Rodney Terrys Game Thread:

Texas just thinks they won the Super Bowl and will be so overconfident we’re going to stomp them.

Wrote this when Texas pulled within one, (or tied, I forget if they tied). Not saying I called it, but, well, ok, I called it! (first time for everything!)

  • So I think the injuries might have actually helped us this game. Everyone who played knew going into the game they’d have an important role to play and had to be ready to step up. Udeh, Yesefu, and MJ, all had very good games compared to how they’d been playing (Udeh less so as he’s had some earlier breakouts). If this team figures out that these guys are the 8 we are going to run with that could be huge for confidence down the stretch. Sucks for the guys dealing with injuries but it’s February. March is around the corner and we are a game back in the big 12 race. Now is when it doesn’t matter if your feelings get hurt. It’s what’s best for the team. I still don’t think MJ is better than Bobby when Bobby is healthy but Bobby just can’t trust his legs not to give out on him. And for the first time in a LONG time, MJ made himself playable. He was engaged and energetic. Hopefully there’s enough good tape out there to show him what it takes now. I know a lot of folks are hoping he’s our March surprise but I think it’s really Udeh that will have the big impact if we end up making a run. He’s so long and athletic that he changes the game off the bench. That’s what can make a team so hard to play against when they play one way and that can be successful and then all of the sudden as you start to adjust, boom, the game changes. Udeh is the boom.

And joe has a little boom in him too. He was finally more than a chucker tonight (though he still chucked). Great to see.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 If we win out, we at least tie for the title since that means we beat Texas in Austin, and as of now we are one game back of them.

  • MJ almost was lost at times but he also did some really good things tonight. Much more aggressive on defense most times and came up with some loose balls. Almost seemed odd but when Jalen exited, we opened up the lead. Kudos to Juan and Joseph.

  • Our bench came through big… and that only happens when most of our starting 5 is playing well, too, because our bench has their minutes sprinkled in with the starters.

Texas impressed me. I can see them going far in March.

When we hustle, we are a tough team to beat and that was proven tonight because Texas is legit!

Our schedule favors us moving forward. If we feed momentum off tonight we could win out!

    Rock Chalk!

  • So many good things happened tonight! Impressive game.

MJ! He lives! Was he brilliant? No. Was he playable and exciting, with effort? Hell yes! He’s got that second and third quick hop gene. 🙂 soooo happy to see that. Thanks, Bill, for giving him extended playing time.

McCullar had his best offensive play of the year tonight…that 360 layup in the lane. Please, please, please let’s see more of this aggression. Fantastic game.

    Loved the bench minutes!

  • Self after the game about injuries

“Bobby will be out a while”, doesn’t anticipate any of Bobby, Zach or Zuby available for Saturday.

After all that we control our own destiny

KU doesn’t control their destiny in the Big 12. ISU is a game up on KU and we’ve already played them twice.

They gonna lose again maybe more then one. - Like I said before this game - -6 losses is gonna be the best - -more likely then not gonna be shared

Point is KU is dependent on others losing in order to win the Big 12 (shared or outright) even if KU wins out which means KU does not control their own destiny in the Big 12 race.

We always control our own destiny. We might not control the B12’s destiny, but it’s pretty easy to envision both Texas and the Clones taking losses, perhaps multiple losses from here on out.

  • @Jethro

So much will change in the next week or so, the upcoming schedule for everyone is brutal.

KU has road games against OU/Ok St then a home game on Primetime Saturday vs Baylor. This 3 game stretch could have us rolling on serious momentum. I’ll remain hopeful!

  • Dare I say Yesufu had an off-the-bench-spark type presence last night?

Tell me how KU shares the Big 12 title if Iowa St. somehow wins out? That’s why KU doesn’t control their destiny at this point since KU is a game back of ISU in the loss column and we don’t play them again in the regular season.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 While you are technically right about Kansas not controlling its own destiny, I do feel like many have said that essentially we do. It’s a fairly solid bet that if KU wins out or even drops one more game (as long as it’s not at Texas) this team will either win or share the big 12 title.

Beating the first place team to keep them from going two games up was huge. It also showed that when this team plays with energy, they can beat a high level team. They didn’t have to shoot the ball well from three. They didn’t need jalen to go for 25.

  • We need to just focus on the game in front of us. The other stuff will sort itself out.

If we hustle consistently moving forward (like last night) we will be a tough team to beat every night, including in March.

Let’s keep this simple. One game at a time.

Udeh… you the man! The path has cleared for you and keep stepping up to the challenge. Seems weird… he only played 8 minutes but felt like much more. Good sign!

Gradey… doing more to score than just catch and shoot. He’s learning he can create scoring space whenever he wants. He can also draw fouls easily. Keep pushing the backdoors. Punish defenders who want to stay in his grill!

Joe was a beast! So was Kevin! Push to the rim and draw contact, score, or both!

    KJ 7 offensive rebounds? Sick!

Juan back on track! We don’t win without Juan filling the score sheet. I’d still trade some of his scoring for assists but making any kind of impact is what we need from him. When he goes invisible… we lose.

MJ beginning to make an impact. His body size is very helpful with out depth.

How refreshing to see our guys gut it out! The hustle was there and I bet they are less exhausted now then if they came unmotivated and struggled!

  • @benshawks08 you’re absolutely right. This is a final four team if they play like they did last night.

  • Our 3 healthy bench players are athletic as heck & man it was refreshing to see them come in and make immediate impacts. Each has something or does something that can help this team.

Yesufu had a green light and it looked like he was confident in himself knowing he was getting the opportunity. Top 2 game as a Hawk. Keep it rollin Joe!

Rice battled for loose balls, drove the ball and gained plenty of contact with no calls. His assist on a Gradey breakaway was awesome. His defense is in the infant stages, but he gave great effort last night after Saturday’s debacle. He has the body to take contact like Jalen and finish plays. If his back can stay healthy, I really hope they explore getting him downhill.

Udeh’s presence on both ends seemed to really open up the game as Texas had to account for him. Self could scheme him 4-5 dunks a game if he could just not foul LOL.

  • @drgnslayr Gradey was certainly a more effective driver than we’ve seen from him up to this point. He was getting his shoulders passed guys and then attacking the rim. If he can develop that quick rip and go, it can only free up even more open threes for him.

  • @BShark What does “paint touch off the bounce” mean? He mentions it in that article.

  • Didn’t read this whole game thread, but do we still have people questioning Juan??

  • @benshawks08

Absolutely! If he can take the quick shot, or fake then drive to the paint, or fake and step back or side for scoring space on his shot… how the heck can he be defended? And last… If he can’t shake a defender, use fakes and go into the contact and draw the foul! He showed us a bit of all of this last night!

    I’m impressed!

  • @wissox said in Triage Hawks vs Fightin Rodney Terrys Game Thread:

Someone got at least one foot into the paint by driving the ball.

This is correct. Ball movement last night was very good. Clearly a major sticking point for Self going in. Dajuan finally looked quick again too.

  • Obviously… Self really stuck a spur under our team’s saddle. Juan, Gradey, and Kevin all took it hard to the rack (and were rewarded!)

Almost makes me think… did he throttle JWil, our one player who always takes it to the rack?

Even our bench was more aggressive driving.

Makes me wonder… codependency? Everyone not named JWil took it easy before because they just expected JWil to do the driving?

Whatever was said in practice and pregame… I approve!

  • @benshawks08 @BShark Thanks, I kind of figured it was some sort of paint touch, but off the bounce perplexed me. It indeed was evident last night. Credit ISU with limiting our paint touches as well. That was as good a defense as we’ve seen quite a while.

I feel the same way about the message board. Sometimes the rotating insulters use the same phrases- it’s like they had “blinders” on. I don’t mean you, of course. I know you were pointing out Dejuan was a Div2 point guard because you love the team so much, and we all can’t be sunshine pumpers, can we? Dejuan did have 3 bad games in a row. It seems he must’ve read your comment because he looked great last night, didn’t he? Looks like you motivated him.

  • A peak into Self’s genius and reacting on the fly after a bad game. We got a layup on the first possession of the game from Juan and started the 2nd half with Juan getting fouled on a drive. The emphasis was there the entire game. Cool to see executed

  • Well, the big question:

Is this the rotation we can expect moving forward? Will Joe and MJ continue to get minutes where they can show results?

I’d be fine with most of that. We still need a guy who can get us into our offense when Dajuan is out. Joe had a good game, but he’s not that guy. Glad to see him have success on the offensive side of things for sure though. Is that a good trade off? we do need a guy who can make things happen with individual effort at times.

  • Coach explained in post game, they pressured us out and denied, that enabled us to get a shoulder by them and drive. They also denied Juan the ball, didn’t want him to run the O. I think Bilas said that.

I think the thought was that Kevin could be that guy with Bobby out. While joe is definitely not that guy, he can at least get buy his man and get to the hoop WITHOUT running offense so there’s that.

I made a comment in the game thread about someone being missing when we had back to back possessions where it got late in the shot clock with nothing going on offense. Those were the few minutes Juan was on the bench.

I did because it was a factually inaccurate statement. It seems like you don’t understand what the concept of controlling your own destiny means. There is a scenario, regardless of how small the chances of it actually happening are, where KU can win out and still not win even a share of the Big 12 title which means that KU does not control their own destiny in the Big 12 race.

i know exactly what it means but thank you for enlightening me

  • I can’t stop watching this clip. It’s going into my brain as memorable dunks in KU history. The others that are there. Selden against Baylor and Selden against Kentucky. Any number of Michael Vick alley oops. I know those are recent years, but those are the ones in there. I know BMac had some great ones, Doke had about a million, OChai and Braun could throw them down, but I’m having trouble remember specific ones.

Let’s face it… it was a thrill to see us score in the open court at the rim again! Remember early this year? Remember… this was going to be the fast-track team we always wanted. And now, for the most part, we are a half-court team once again.

This team can still get there. Score double digits every game off the open court. It starts with defense and defensive rebounding. Crashing the boards and pushing the pass up the court.

If we do this our offense numbers climb quickly and we are back on top being one of the top scoring teams in America.

  • What’s the common denominator in bench being productive vs TX.

Play fearlessly, not worried about getting yanked on a mistake, no one is on the bench.
