A crazy thought

  • I was driving to lunch earlier today when a crazy thought hit me. David McCormack could make a case to have his jersey hung in AFH with another strong performance tonight.

Traditionally, KU has retired the jersey of the Final Four MOP.

Lovellette, B.H. Born, Wilt, Manning, Chalmers. All have their jerseys in the rafters.

McCormack gave KU 25 and 9 on Saturday. If he has a big game tonight and is a key player in winning a national title (20 and 12) he probably gets named MOP unless Agbaji has a huge game. We already know Agbaji will be in the rafters someday, but tonight’s game could truly redefine David McCormack’s legacy at KU.

Tonight, McCormack could go from being a really good four year player to an absolute legend. If you were an MOP at Kansas you are a legend, full stop. The list again - Lovellette, Born, Chamberlain, Manning, Chalmers. All KU legends. If your name is on that list, you are a legend.

McCormack has 40 minutes tonight to potentially become a legend, regardless of whatever happens in the rest of his basketball career. He would be part of a championship team, and he would be MOP. Now, he doesn’t have the career accolades of those other guys, but it would be hard to argue against his legendary status because his name would be etched in KU hoops lore FOREVER.

Like I said, a crazy thought. But maybe not so crazy.

  • @justanotherfan Interesting thought…and goes full circle back to him being the highest ranked recruit on this year’s team (if I recall correctly)!

  • Not a crazy thought at all

Hes top 50 in points scored in KU history and despite not having some other accolades like Och it wouldn’t be undeserving if he won the award having a big game. Believe he was also in the running for a banner for academics as well

  • @justanotherfan we were discussing this earlier and aside from winning the game, this is what I want the most tonight.

  • @BeddieKU23 If I remember right, the academics banner is really where his mom wanted his name to hang.

  • @benshawks08

Yupp they have always worried about school more but heck give him a double banner. Great kid

  • Dave is such a Jayhawk! No one has a bigger heart than Big Dave!

  • @justanotherfan He Had 15 against Miami also

ummmm unless it’s Mitch. - maybe not the impact s Dave but can never question his heart, and he FOR SURE bleeds Crimson & Blue and actually I would of neve envisioned him as as gooood of shot locker that he is

  • Love Big Dave, will miss him.

  • Self has said that anyone worthy could be retired. Dave was something like +26 in FF and +16 in championship? Worthy. How do we make it happen?

  • Completely robbed of MOP lol.

  • Has there been a bigger offensive rebound? And he followed it with not one but TWO post buckets he basically got all on his own. 40 and 19 in the last two games is legendary.

  • 40 pts and 19 rebounds in the two Final Four Games, Dave should have been the tournament MVP. You are right; Dave showed up big at the most crucial moment with that offensive rebound and put-back.

  • A little off subject, but I have to say that the UNC fanbase might be the classiest group of folks I’ve ever encountered as an opponent. Dozens and dozens of them on another site came in and congratulated us. I was a little shocked. We share a mutual hatred for Dook, and they genuinely were about as gracious as I’ve ever seen. RCJHGKU.

Did you see right after the final second ticked off the clock? Self came up and gave a real big squeeze to Mitch!

Ya I caught that - -pretty cool stuff . - Mitch wasn’t the most talented kid but he would give his right arm I think for KU- - -nothing he wouldn’t do - TRUE all the way through and through Crimson & Blue

Well, Mitch did give his left knee for the program.

Last night helps, maybe I can forgive Eric Montross…someday. 😂

  • @Jethro - the Dook and UNC fan bases are really going at it on Twitter! Lots of barbs being tossed.

Yeah, we also had a Dook fan congratulate us, and the UNC folks pounced on him hard. That’s their KU/Misery rivalry…

  • The vote for MOP was before the last couple minutes. In another article, it says that Self gave Dave the net, telling him “Och got the hardware but you get the net. You deserve it.”

  • Yes it could be easily argued that BD hit the two most important buckets of the game, plus great D in the clutch. Plus that CONFIDENCE he had to be the guy!! I SWORE he was gonna pass it out to the perimeter, instead he went up against two NC bigs and made the shot. MASSIVE.

And… we don’t win this tourney without Remy. Period. When he picked Kansas last year, this is exactly the Remy that we were all hoping he would bring. Fearless shooting.
