Let the slobberfest begin

    @jayballer67

As I mentioned in an earlier post… we seem to catch every break in this tourney.

It is perfect that the UNC/DUKE game is built up so high. This will be the real championship for these teams. Ha… then they have to turn right around and play us on Monday! (hopefully us) Perfect time for us to come on strong… the only #1 seed left… the sleeper team!

And let’s say we win it all. Imagine the egg on the faces of left coast media when they have to deal with a non-ACC champion? After all that hoopla?!

Let’s get this straight… this is OURS for the grabbing! We deserved this two years ago and didn’t get the chance to get it. Just a little bit more of our chip moving forward. All that said… we don’t just deserve this. We have to earn it!

Meanwhile… let’s focus on the Wildcats that have had our number for a while. Focus on Saturday!

100 % agre EVERYTHING falling into place. Kind of like Danny and the Miracles run. All the upper seeds getting knocked out before Danny and the boys would of had to play them - - -playing certain teams for a third time and beating them.

Media is so consumed with this dam UNC/Duke fest nobody even mentioning THERE IS another game , that’s ok don’t recognize us now - - -you will LATER you can bet that, just let us continue to fly under the radar - -let us build that chip - -WE GOT THIS

  • Mitch with an ailing knee playing through it and do we win without him? He’s playing his best ball right now. Remy is playing his best also. Harris, Dave, Mr. I’ll take over Braun and our Star, who is suffering from Long Covid (IMO) and coming out of it more each week. It’s all coming together at the right time. The top program is littered with four letter words like Phog, Harp, Self, Wilt, ???. I just have to believe.

  • @wissox the year he was doing bad and he collapsed on the floor. He didn’t want those losses to count on his record.

The Danny and the Miracles story is one of the great stories of all time in KU basketball. 1986 we were the best team in America, and we lost to Dook( alluded to by Steve).

We had a loaded team in 1986- stars at every position. 1988 was Danny and essentially some old scraps laying around…we had been pummeled by OU that year. OU was GOOD…I mean really good. Nobody thot we had a chance against them. We were very mediocre that year, but got on a run, and Danny went wild, and we somehow managed to make it to the title game.

Everybody said we had to stop OU from running because they were high flying, run you out of the gym fast. And the weirdest thing happened: we ran with them, too. And we were smoking them. At half, we had managed to forge a tie at 50-50. It was an incredible half- if you haven’t seen it, take the time to watch it. It was a work of art. Then the 2nd half rolls around, and somehow we managed to beat them.

It was a stunning upset. It was amazing, joyous, and an unforgettable evening.

  • @Jethro Remember, running with them was not actually Brown’s pre-game plan. He just let them continue after it started that way because we were shooting so well (83% or something). At halftime he wisely slowed it down because he knew nobody could keep that up.

  • Some of the best KU teams of all time, with a rough ranking:

    • 1997: lost to Arizona

    • 1957: w/Wilt, lost to UNC in 3OT (UNC’s ascension started here)

    • 1986: lost to Duke (Duke’s ascension started here)

    • 2008: Won NC

    • 1952: Won NC

    • … <other teams like 2020…>

    • 1988: Won NC

If we can knock off Villanova, we have an opportunity for retribution — for either '57 or '86.

  • @mayjay @KUSTEVE I recall it was Danny who told the guys on the floor at the tip that they were going to run.

Billy Tubbs and Guy Lewis would both be national champs if they’d coached better. Lewis because pre shot clock they stalled and it let NCState get back into the game. Tubbs guys were gassed because he didn’t use his bench except 1 guy for 5 minutes. Meanwhile our bench went 5 deep and we were fresh and energetic all game.

  • @wissox I remember after Larry said no running, slow it down, Danny pulled them in and said let’s run!

  • Read an interesting tidbit this morning. Talking about North Carolina in the final four as an AP unranked team. The last team to win it all who was unranked by the AP? Danny and the Miracles. The last one before that? You cannot make this up. Villanova in 85. What a wild Final Four!

  • An observation or two as we head into tomorrow.

As the only team left that’s west of the Mississippi (heck, the only one left of the Appalachians), you’d think KU would get more than token attention from the national media this week. But I’ve been shocked (though not surprised I guess) at the virtual silent treatment for a school with multiple national titles, most notably from ESPN (Eastern Seaboard Propaganda Network). The only mention I’ve seen about KU this week was a Sportscenter flashback to a game we lost to Villanova in 2005 when we were ranked Number One. Seems like we got a LOT more national coverage during the regular season. Duke, Carolina, and even Nova are sucking up all the oxygen in the press room.

This kind of thing isn’t limited to the men’s game. A friend of mine from Stanford is upset that the defending national women’s champs are getting pretty much ignored in favor of UConn coach Geno Auriemma, yet another ESPN darling. Even South Carolina (top-ranked for most of the season) isn’t getting as much attention as he does.

Yep, no East Coast bias here.

  • Another observation about tomorrow. Thanks for the idea nwhawkfan.

The “experts” think Kansas can win it all and one article titled something like anonymous observations from opposing coaches said that KU is as talented as any team this year. Then one coach said we have seen Kansas win 32 games by playing really well during parts of games but we have not seen Kansas play a complete game at their best. Truth and we have seen the same thing about the team. We come out flat and trail at the half making it harder to win or we come out blazing and get to 20 points very quickly and then go five minutes scoreless. We let some teams hang with us as a result. The bottom line was if KU plays at their best for an entire game we will beat them all.

  • @nwhawkfan

Your post should be under “Chip and Pace!” lol

    I’m right there with you.

  • If we beat Villanova, does KU get to hang a Big East championship banner this year too since they’ll have beaten 3 of their top 4 in the NCAA tournament this year?

  • Damn, wish you all could be in Chapel Hill with me for the games tomorrow. This place is a freaking madhouse. Students were lined up at bars this week just trying to get a reservation anywhere downtown. You can feel the energy on campus and in the city. It’s really going to be insanity. And nothing would make me happier than following up a KU win with Carolina ending K’s career and storming Franklin.

  • CBSSports channel is showing back to back to back Duke ncaa games tonight.

We can’tafford to come out flat against Villanova and try to play catch up & and let them control temple , got to try and contain Gillispie posting up down low -we got to run them off the 3 pt line. Defense has just been getting better and better. - They had a stat on it this morning Starting around the 1st of March we were in the 30’s according to kenpom now I think they said w are 18th. – Got to have asolid game

  • @Jethro Oh, that’s good, obviously I missed it. I recorded the Miami game and watched the 2nd half again when I got home! Watched us beat Memphis the other day. What great memories that was!

  • There was a time I proudly wore a Duke shirt. My grandfather lived in the triangle area and when grandma got sick she was treated at Duke hospital where eventually she passed. Grandpa spent a lot of time in the cafeteria during those long days and got to know a worker there by the name of James Worthy. He never let the facts get in the way of a good story so there’s no way to verify this ‘friendship’ now. Anyways when KU played Duke in 91 he made a bet with me that the loser would have to wear the T-shirt of the other team. Well I wore that shirt proudly as I loved my Grandfather, but would never make such a foolish wager now!

  • 😂

  • @wissox

Lol. Like a child desperately seeking approval.

  • Here’s a good one from a media person. If coach K loses without a championship this year will it tarnish his legacy?

Well excuse me you must have me confused with someone who gives a s***.

  • I have read many articles about Kansas this week. Not sure how you have missed them. CBS Sports, The Athletic, NYT, AND ESPN have all had features.

For those of you determined to feel underrespected and unappreciated, The Athletic’s panel of 11 alleged “experts” had most picking KU against Villanova (8 of 11), all 11 picking Duke over UNC, and KU tied with Duke (5-5) for the Championship (1 person picked Villanova).

We are so hated! Boo hoo hoo!!!

  • @mayjay Like my grandfather, we don’t like to let the facts ruin a good story!

  • If KU isn’t gonna blow out Nova tonight, id like a quadruple OT game to push Coach K’s game back as far as possible.

  • Sportscenter opening, “The wait is almost over, Duke-UNC tonight” See @mayjay they do hate us!!

  • Bonus : when Bill wins his 2nd national championship, the Tucky rump rat’s noggins will explode. This will set off a flurry of neurotic threads on Rump Rafters on how Bill has more titles than the Squid. Delicious.

  • @Jethro Now that is a delicious possibility I has not considered!

  • @jayballer67 And it would have deserved it. It was a huge game, and amazingly close. Brilliant comeback for UNC after going down by 7 at 41-34. You don’t like the ACC and Duke, but they have deserved monster attention since the mid-80’s.

Think of it this way: When Bill Self retires with 5 NCs, you would be very pissed if the undercard battle in the F4 got more attention than his last game were we to lose in our semi. Note: when, not if, he has 5…

Well I’m looking at it this way now , all that matters is KU is in the National Championship bottom line and I’ve now moved past this love fest with K and Duke, I also know this they will have prime seats to be able to sit and watch the Championship game but just glaad the guys still playing Monday Night

It’s 10-1. I’m not arguing anything that you said- I agree 100%. I was just saying the games you were talking about weren’t on ESPN. I mean…ESPN tried to convince the AAC to go after B12 teams in order to implode the conference. That’s why I don’t worry about anything that ESPN says or does- no matter what I won’t be watching them.

Mattress Mack is a legend here in Houston. He is one of the most generous men I’ve ever seen. I would strongly encourage everyone to go read about how much he’s done for Houston over the years.

  • @mayjay and his customers who spent more than $3K on mattresses are hoping we win too so they get their money back!

  • @mayjay I think Bill might retire in a slightly less self congratulatory manner than Coach K. I suspect a quiet “What a great season this was. I’m retiring.” Sort of the way Roy Williams retired. With class and very little fan fare. Coach Ks insufferable ego forced this one year circus where the entire basketball world had to kiss his ass repeatedly. Thank god he will never coach again!

Coach K’s approach invited the circus and ESPN was more than happy to oblige. The sports media enabled this slobberfest. I’ve been disappointed with CBS in the past week and especially the last 24 hours getting so sucked in. And when they weren’t tied in knots about the Duke-UNC game, they were gushing about Villanova — even after the loss. It was embarrassing how Big East-centric their perspective was.

  • Wondering why the final game is at 9:20 ET on a Monday night? Being in PT I’m not complaining, just a bit late for all the East Coasters
