TOP 16 Released- KU #1 Seed

  • I guess we all saw the NCAA releasing the Top 16 yesterday. The B12 leads the country with 4 teams in the Top 16.

  • I’m surprised they have Illinois as a 3 seed and Wisky as a 4. That needs to be flip flopped, imo. Gonzaga continues to skate with the high school schedule ( can’t wait until we have a UCF conference game- pass the cheesecake!) . Amazed and grateful we’re ahead of "Tucky, although I don’t fully understand it. Tenn got run yesterday, so gotta figure Wisky moves up, and Tenn goes down a seed line. I also figure the AZ Mildcats move ahead of Auburn on the 1 line as 2nd overall seed.

  • Why wouldn’t we be the #1 seed in the Midwest, and Auburn be #1 seed in the East?

Ya buddy I agree , pretty surprised actually and a much as for my dis like for Kentucky can’t understand how we are above them after they spanked our ass on our home court, Actually don’t really think we are a # 1 seed- -the 2 seed would be about right. - -Yet who am I that’s what these guys are suppose to figure out. - -I knw we are the lowest 1 but can’t argue with that either. – Now it’s just to see who holds their lines for the next couple of weeks

Auburn shouldn’t be a 1 seed anywhere any longer

I believe that is simply a function of where everyone is on seed line and then what is the closest regional final venue. The top seed gets to choose their regional and everything follows from that. At this point in time, Auburn and Arizona are seeded higher than KU. With Gonzaga as the overall #1 seed, they will be in the West. Which means Arizona has to go elsewhere. Next closest is San Antonio. For Auburn, not that much of a difference between Philly and Chicago, but Chicago is 100 miles closer. Don’t know whether bracket rules allow for adjustments given that the travel distance for KU would be dramatically different.

In any event, there likely will be some movement on the top line between now and Selection Sunday…

  • @jayballer67 I see how we are ahead of them- better record, better SOS, better wins, etc. But the eye test tells me the stats are worthless. This is a good lesson to remember when we take the stats more seriously than our own eyeballs.

  • @Jethro

For Kentucky it’s all about resume. Especially considering Auburn has led the conference the whole way I think its hard for them to be on the top line when they are likely going to finish 2nd in their own conference.

If you dive into Kentucky’s resume they didn’t beat a ranked team until the middle of January. Very weak non conference. They are 3-5 against ranked teams. I get they beat us by 18 on our home floor & that win probably is carrying a lot of weight. I’m sure it helped to the point its the main reason they are in the conversation for a 1 seed because there isn’t much to their resume that says top 4 team outside of that big win over us. They are going to have to beat Auburn in the SEC tournament to have a chance.

  • I will always bet on early Arizona upsets until they prove otherwise. Please give them a 1 seed so I can bet against them.

  • @approxinfinity Seany is gone now. Tommy Lloyd seems like he might be a dude.

  • Zona/Oregon game was a fun watch. Neither plays a lick of defense.

  • Let’s say we beat Baylor but drop a couple other games… Is it possible the B12 doesn’t score a 1-seed while clearly having the best basketball conference this year?

  • @BeddieKU23

Playing defense seems to be out of vogue this year.

Makes me think Texas Tech might make a return to the FF… if they just get some offense clicking.

The REAL question is , does the Big 12 really deserve a # 1 seed ? - -I am not seeing for us anyways where the # 1 seed has benefited us a whole hell of a lot in the Tourney anyways. I mean as far as making a final 4 or whatever, I just haven’t seen in years past where it’s made that much difference. - -I’d be fine with a 2 seed - I really don’t think there is a HUGE difference between the two.

I think more then anything the fans wanna see their team having that # 1 seed so they can walk around and beat their chests saying ya we got a # 1 seed - I mean great no problem but I just don’t se that Huge of a difference. - I really don’t think it’s gonna matter this year for KU if we are a 1 or a 2 -still got play them 1 game at a time

  • @drgnslayr Tech is interesting. They’ve held serve at home all season, but are 4-6 away from Lubbock. They play top tier defense, but I also feel like the league has let them get away without playing anything resembling a PG all season. Basically just let them walk the ball up and get into their offense. I’ll be curious to see if their first round matchup does the same.

  • @Kcmatt7 how long was adams w/beard? TT has such a deep bench too, that will pay off for them.

  • @drgnslayr

It was an entertaining game and at one point in the first half I thought they were both on pace for 100. Both teams like to get n1 up and down. I enjoyed it since nobody in the big 12 seems to like scoring or playing with tempo besides Baylor.

I’m worried that this years Big 12 has too many teams playing the same style where our team isnt getting enough exposure to different styles of play. The best offense that KU has faced this yr crushed them by 18 in their own gym (Kentucky) and played up to their #3 rated offense per Kenpom, (KU) now 4th.

My one concern from calling them a final 4 caliber team is the lack of a point guard for sure. They make up for it by playing athletes and going at least 10 deep with that really good defense. Would be interesting to see a team press them in March.

  • @jayballer67 I don’t think any conference deserves a #1 seed, even if we’re the best. I would put us as a #2 seed right now with a chance to move up to a #1. I have Auburn, AZ, Zaga, and Tucky as 1 seeds. We definitely have a chance to move up.

  • I think the biggest benefit to Tech going into the tournament is they will mostly face teams that haven’t played against a real defense all year… especially against real athletes and depth.

  • @drgnslayr I think Tech will run into some quick guards and get beat in the tourney.

  • @Jethro

Anything is possible. Slap us in the Kentucky bracket and watch us turn around and spank the kitties! Yes… it could happen!

  • Always love the February self-torture over seeding! Que sera sera…
