Few observations watching Baylor last night.

They may not fall off at all this season. They have 3 guards (Akinjo, Flagler, Cryer) that so far are mimicking what Butler/Mitchell/Flagler did last year.

LJ Cryer has really improved. Back to back 20 point games.

Jeremy Sochan a 6’9 freshman forward is a stud. Kendall Brown is as advertised. Hate seeing him in a Baylor Jersey.

Their defense is really good again.

They haven’t played anyone yet. Central Arkansas looked like a D3 school.

What is Meyer looking l.ike ?- -is he starting now ? Looks like it might be a real dog fight between KU , Baylor , & Texas

Yeah he’s starting. One of their leaders and scoring options. Terrible hair still with that mullet going on.

Starting 5 so far has been Flagler/Akinjo/Meyer in the backcourt. Using Brown at the 4 & Thamba inside. Cryer, Sochan & ChimyChanga are the main 3 subs. They use another guard Bonner (Juco kid) due to the Langston Love injury.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich said in Non-KU Games:

@BeddieKU23 I’ve been on this train for a while. I don’t think they’ll be as good as last season because I don’t think any of their guards is close to being as good as Davion Mitchell, but their team is still really good. Akinjo, Flagler, Brown, Mayer, Thamba starting with Cryer, Dainja, Sochan, and JTT off the bench.

It’s early of course and they have played 3 sisters of the poor but the things that stuck out to me

    • no drop off in guard play so far after losing 3 studs

    • defense is just as aggressive & effective as it was last season

    • easy to see winning culture and chemistry exists even with new guys in the lineup

I agree they are not as good as last year but the drop off so far is minimal. The season ending injury to Langston Love limits their ceiling a bit I think. He was a big time scorer in HS. However Brown & Sochan are NBA guys & the emergence of LJ Cryer has raised their potential a good bit. They look like a E8/F4 contender. I don’t think they can win it all.

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah Baylor has next level scheduling bad teams strat. It might not look like it to some people but they schedule much worse competition from those lower leagues than schools like KU do. They also tend to have some games that count against actual D2 comp every year.

I believe the offense is probably about as good as last season, but I’m skeptical about the defense. Mitchell and Vital were two of the best defenders I’ve ever seen in college basketball. I don’t think they’re going to be as good defensively, and that’s probably where the drop-off will be.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich

Agree Vital & Mitchell were elite level defenders. They had 21 steals last night but they played what looked like one of the worst teams in D-1. So far I see little drop-off from their defense but I do think that changes when they play real teams.

  • @BeddieKU23 Yeah, the game is easier when you physically outmatch the opponent at every position.

  • Watched the end of the Oklahoma game vs. Indiana State. Didn’t realize OU has the Groves Bros. from Eastern Washington…thought we were rid of them.

Not to mention Porter Moser (ex-Loyola-Chicago) as coach. Could be scary in Big XII play.

Tanner (the one with the beard) had 24 points on 10 of 15 from the field, and 8 boards. 11 points off the bench from brother Jacob.

  • Home town refs for the Dook game. Also no mention of a DUI

  • @rockchalkwyo To be fair, we have some home town refs too!

  • @wissox I know I know. I’m immature ok 😀

  • @rockchalkwyo Join the club!!

  • The Shockers came up a little short last night but gave Arizona all they wanted. Looks like WSU is going to be one of the teams on or close to the “bubble “ come tourney time. Kinda funny I live in Wichita but don’t hear the Shocker fans saying how they want a piece of KU like they did several years back!

  • @jayballer67 too funny…my wife lived just north of Benton when she was a teenager. Went to Circle High for a couple years. I grew up on a farm just outside of Garden Plain, a small town just west of Wichita. Moved to the city when I started working for Cessna. I like where I’m at but man I kinda miss the quiet laid back life on the farm

  • Watching Baylor and Stanford right now. Baylor looks really good. Their roster construction is nice; all the pieces fit really well together.

  • Nova is murdering Tennessee, which isn’t surprising. Villanova is really good too this year.

  • Sochan looks like the real deal. That’s probably Jalen Wilson’s match-up. That’ll be fun

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich said in Non-KU Games:

Beating Stanford that bad without Flagler… Drew has that program rolling.

  • @Kcmatt7 Ya, I feel like they are better than #9. If their name was Duke or Kentucky they’d probably be Top 5. They have Nova and Oregon coming up though so I guess we’ll find out.

  • Baylor playing like…Baylor.

Meanwhile, Jerod Haase looks to be on the hot seat at Stanford. That loss to Santa Clara didn’t help. Hate to see it happen to a Jayhawk who I really enjoyed as a player, but this may be his last season in Palo Alto. It’s his sixth year with the Cardinal, and they’ve only finished in the top half of the Pac-12 once under him.

  • @nwhawkfan I liked Jerod as a player too, but he’s not doing well at Stanford. Hard school to recruit kids to, but that can’t be the entire reason. It’s not like the Pac12 has been stacked the entire time he’s been there.

  • I was at a NonKU game yesterday in football and it was a blast. UW beat Nebraska which oddly is 1-7 in the B1G but has outscored its opponents in league games 218-211. The one game they won the won by 49 and they’ve had close games against everyone else. Badgers 17 year old RB ran for 225 yards.

Nova is really damn good not sure about Oregon.

  • Villanova and Purdue are playing and it’s not on TV?

  • @wissox It’s on the ESPN app, but the quality kind of sucks. It said it was on ABC but it wasn’t for me.

  • @BShark Ya I saw they got blown out by BYU. Nova’s obviously better than Oregon, but Oregon is better than the teams that Baylor has played so far.

  • Yeah, the ESPN box score says ABC. I’m kind of pissed. Top 10 battle relegated to an app you have to pay for. ABC here is showing infomericals.

  • Nova can’t close

I saw someone compare Nubs football to Job of the Old Testament and now I can’t get it out of my head

  • @FarmerJayhawk Interesting to think about. Job lost everything, Neb has kind of the same.

  • Purdue came back from 11 down late to knock off Villanova.

  • Purdue has a lot of nice pieces

  • @wissox was on here, Purdue just won at the end

  • @Oldmanhawk no question. They’ll give Michigan a run for their money, if not win the B1G outright.

  • I’d trade rosters with Purdue. Mainly because of Bill lol. With Jay Wright I think I’d take KU’s roster instead.

  • @BShark a 7’4” center 👀

  • @rockchalkwyo that’s what they meant by nice pieces!

  • Michigan Arizona on now in the boner pill classic

  • lol Michigan

UofA looks good though. If we had Koloko we would be title favorites.

  • @FarmerJayhawk said in Non-KU Games:

Last I saw Arizona was taking it to Michigan pretty good

  • @wissox said in Non-KU Games:

Ya it was on here on TV - Purdue has that 7’4 dude, pretty decent looked like his foot speed wasn’t the best a little slow but passible 21 points in 20 minutes

  • Gonzaga & Purdue are horrible matchups for KU. They both have multiple bigs that can abuse Dave.

  • @BeddieKU23 said in Non-KU Games:

that could be very true, but you also have to look at the other shoe, KU can also run a line up that can pretty much off set their big’s. We have guys that can play the 5 and stretch the floor make their big’s try to defend in space’ - -we have Zach that can play sme spot , Coach even mentioned playing Jalen as a stretch 5 - so we could pretty well counter their big’s with our stretch 5’s kind of like what Villanova done to us a few years back , more worried about Gonzaga then Purdue

  • @jayballer67

Purdue has a lotto pick guard as well (Ivey) that can do it all and has shown impressive play making (13 assists in 2 games) over the weekend. They have a few other role players that make perimeter shots as well. About as well rounded a team as there is outside KU and Gonzaga

  • No Purdue/Villanova on major markets all over the country. ABC here in Chicago played some cuddly animal show. This is unbelievably bad decision making by someone. Purdue is less than 2 hours from Chicago. Lots of Boilermaker alums all over the area here.

  • @BeddieKU23 said in Non-KU Games:

Holmgren is rail thin. Not so sure that he can bully anyone if push came to shove.

  • @Marco

Sure Holmgren is thin and that’s just how its going to be for him until he’s got years of strength training in the NBA. He’s really skilled and a tremendous rim protector which we all know is something KU struggles with every single time they face a big with that kind of ability

  • @BeddieKU23 he is definitely skilled.

  • As I watch Butler get taken apart by Houston in Maui, I’m surprised at how far their program has fallen in just a dozen years, when they went to back-to-back National Championship games. Now they’re bottom-feeders in the Big East.
