  • Dopeski. Is he going to play for Kansas, though?

  • Interesting. Not holding my breathe on him playing here just yet. We’ll see. If he does that’s a big time pickup. Hope our NIL game is strong

Yeah. It’s possible college or maybe overseas end up being his only real offers. Not exactly a fit for the NBA. Overtime in play.

  • Watching MJ Rice, I see a lot of Wayne Selden in his game right now. Very athletic, can shoot a bit, but needs improvement there, handle is adequate, but not as tight as it needs to be. He has a good nose for the ball and could be a high level defender if he commits to that end because of his athleticism. He’s strong and he’s a worker, but some of the plays he makes now with his strength are not going to work in college when he faces that next level of strength and development. He’s a good rebounder for his size, to the point I almost just want to say he’s a good rebounder.

His shot is going to need some work. He’s a bit of a slow load on the shot, which won’t work at the college level. I can’t tell if that’s just him not being 100% comfortable with his mechanics, or if it’s something else. I need to watch him some more on that.

His handle is the other issue. He can’t really create on his own right now because his handle is behind his athleticism. He can’t be as quick as he would like to be because he isn’t as good a ball handler as he needs to be. He’s not a bad ball handler, but he’s probably not a secondary ball handler at this point. He’s strictly a wing right now.

I’d put him as a Wayne Selden with pre-injury athleticism, and a bit of Mario Little added in from a strength standpoint.

  • Billy McKnight being the head coach at Prolific Prep again is a positive for KU here.

  • @justanotherfan Agree. Strong write-up. I think Self is gonna have to play him at the 3-4. Some very fun potential line-ups with two points, Dick, Rice and Zuby.

  • @BShark

I hope he follows through with playing for Bill but with the ever changing landscape who knows. The 22 class is certainly trending towards immediate talent infusion and guys that can impact in year 1

  • How are we looking on Mark Mitchell?

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich said in 2022 Recruiting Thread:

How are we looking on Mark Mitchell?

He isn’t really even talking to KU anymore.

  • Jayhawkslant @Jayhawkslant 1m just talked to elite small forward and #kubball comment @mjrice_1. He’s not thinking about the pros.he ready to get to Kansas and get to work.

  • @BShark Bummer

  • Great nab. Dick has a smooth game and good handles, can play inside and out - they can play together. I read one article, the guy pretty much comparing Rice to Mark Vital. I could live with that. Thoughts?

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich imo once we signed Dick and Zuby the Mitchell train - if ever there was one - pretty much left the station.

  • MJ Rice looks like another Seldon/Grimes/Andrew White. Big, thick guards who may or may not also be explosive. Tough to tell if guys like this will be a success because they use their size so well in high school.

Good points. The article pretty much implied that he is a great rebounder with a nose for the ball, a Vital-like undersized power forward. I think that he is going to play for us, he wants to go to college for a year. NIL is a game changer.

The good thing about Rice compared to Grimes is he doesn’t think he is a PG. 😂

  • Also, Bill knows with Mitchell and isn’t bothering or wasting any time with it. So nothing to worry about there.

  • Watching a few videos of him now, I’d say 70% Selden, 30% Vital. So basically Charles Barkley (joking).

  • Film on Rice was solid as heck. Can definitely impact in a variety of ways. The roster is going to need a talent infusion so this is a great way to help that along. Definitely see the Selden comp’s. Thought I was watching Wayne highlights tbh

  • @BeddieKU23 KJ, Bobby, Cuffe, Zuby, Dick, Rice

  • @justanotherfan Great summary, thanks.

  • Watched some of Chandler Jackson’s stuff on the YouTube. Looks really good for a Self team. Coming unofficially for Late Night then officially for a game.

  • 👀

I see that he plays for Team Thad.

ya I’m trying to remain optimistic on him actually showing. -A LOT of time before he shows on campus. A LOT of things can happen between now and then.

Love how they say how well he is but and how he loves contact , spends alot of time at the line. - -Loves posting smaller guys but yet durable enough where he can clean the glass and still lead the break plus hits the outside J pretty consistently. - -Highest ranked recruit I think they said we have had since Grimes.

That’s an obvious statement for him to make at this particular time - Of course he is going to say that , he just verbally committed to KU. - He is gonna say whatever he thinks people want to hear right now.

A Lot of time before it’s time for him to actually come. Don’t feel really all that confident , not alone feeling that way, BUT however he did say he wanted to take the year and continue to work his Senior year and get better. If he comes and think it’s like 50/50 probably if he come would be a really sweet get

Well that’s a little positive if we are going to be one of his officials

watched the video , built pretty good/thick - -can finish through contact, he was getting butchered in some of those and still finish - looks good

Yeah, I’m not treating him as a member of the team until he shows up in 10 months.

@BShark noted rival of Team Chad

  • Really good Video on his commitment with SI and Jason Jordon pulled it up of Zagsblog. site. - -One thing kind of funny I thought was - - - Jordon asked him what was Coach Self’s reaction/what he had to say when MJ told him he was committing to KU MJ says - - - Well actually I haven’t told him yet lmao. - -So he did the SI interview with Jordon BEFORE he even contacted Coach Self to let him know he was coming - - that’s funny lol.

He also mentioned he had always dreamed of going to a School like KU. - Again we will see , but for now - -great news. Who knows MAYBE he will take the year at KU and get that Coaching and improve, no way even if he comes he is here for over a year. -I’ll take it anyways

  • When is Late Night this year?

  • @BShark why would he? The roster as it is shaking out, we don’t need him. He is a talent, but we don’t need him.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich he is an undersized 4, and needs to develop a better outside shot - but man, he is a gamer!

What do you think? Think that Bill has been recruiting? I am not lying, I am - easy drive, and I love popcorn - going to go see Dick play this year at Sunrise.

  • He is a major in-state talent. Better than Mitchell imo. We could not let him get away. The best Wichita talent since when? Korleone Young? Granted, Young was a bust everywhere. imo Dick is a bigtime player, and was a must get.

  • @Marco Perry Ellis wasn’t to shabby. I do think GD is going to be very good with a lot of upside

  • @Oldmanhawk no, he wasn’t.

  • Here is just another example with players of MJ Rice caliber - -why don’t get to hyped up on him YET till he is actually on Campus and attending class.

The what is rated as the # 2 PG in the Nation the # 8 rated overall player in the nation according to 247 sports Jazian Gortman , will NOT attend College and has just signed a ONE year deal with Overtime Elite worth 650,000 dollars. How can Colleges compete with deals like that ?

Sharing from a post I read like the poster said - -sure we have the NIL for players now , that will help off set some BUT with a player thinking about committing to a School comes with commitment to attend classes. This thing will start to snowball and your going to see more and more players like this go the route straight to Overtime or G league.

Overtime still remains an option for MJ and just think we need to keep an open mind and realize he is not here set in stone yet. - Don’t get me wrong I want him here but just not sold yet - -alot of time before he is here - like Farmer said 10 months - -these pro league can dangle A LOT of money in front of MJ before it’s time for him to be here. 650,000 for ONE YEAR to him would be really tempting.

Seems like we have went from where these kids had virtually nothing no way to have some money to the other extreme as to where now they hold all the cards with the NIL & these pro leagues willing to throw money at them like this - -it might get bad talent wise for the Colleges if this thing really starts to roll - - remember RJ Hampton ? - lock for KU and look what happens - -money talks loud to kids real loud

  • @jayballer67

Yeah definitely a concern Rice could take a better deal somewhere but for now he is committed and that at least is something. Gortman didn’t commit anywhere before taking that deal. KU will presumably be able to be in his ear about staying the College route…

Plus the money can be better in college. Dariq Whitehead didn’t turn down 500k from the Gleague to get less at Duke. Similar for Duren at Memphis I’m sure.

  • @BShark

That’s where KU and Bill/staff is going to have to figure out how to enhance these kids opportunities with the NIL. Can’t just sell tradition, KU brand, KU reputation anymore to these 5 star types. Self is going to have to in my opinion step outside his character box and make KU the most attractive option.

  • @BShark I saw where Duren’s pro deal was 2M so FedEX really ponied up for him.

  • @BeddieKU23 I know KU was kinda “laying low” for awhile after the NCAA crap (believe @FarmerJayhawk can confirm this) and if I had to guess given the recent recruiting uptick the deathstar is fully operational again.

ya I know he didn’t commit. 650,000 for a ONE yr deal to an 18 yr old kid is ALOT of money and not having to go to school. Just play ball. - -But I agree with you too my friend he committed so that’s something even if it’s just a verbal but better then a kick in the pants , like you said Staff still gonna have to stay on him till then. EVEN if he is only here for a year which if he comes I can’t see him probably staying any longer then that but who knows - -here is hoping - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

Very true , just depends on the individual. Let’s see play the Devils advocate let’s see what Sharpe does ?

  • Sharpe is going to Kentucky. Done just not announced.
