2021 Recruiting

  • @Woodrow

Of all the players that could possibly leave I was thinking Gethro would stick around just because of the potential down the road but he did go to multiple High Schools and its a free year so there’s never going to be an easier time to find another spot then now. Same for Jossell, Enaruna, TGF

  • No surprise here. Hunter Sallis to Gonzaga

  • We should be Nike…

Noooooo, you don’t say - - - just stunning - - -stunning I say. - Well it’s ok , so many transfers I really do think with so many that Coach will be able to find some pretty quality guys that will hep the guys right ?

  • @jayballer67

Looks like the ideal circumstances is 1 FR, 1 transfer at this point, until roster movements happen and we know for sure who’s back

Still think we could use a quality 5 somewhere /somehow

  • So much for Gonzaga ever going back to mid-major status. It’s amazing what Few has done there, really. Wonder if Moser can do the same at Loyola Chicago?

  • Tamar Bates asking out of his LOI from Texas…

Look for Kansas to go after him

  • @BShark 2031. We can form a KU Buckets Boosters group and steer the decision.

I can contribute $100 of seed money.

  • @BeddieKU23 I really was not impressed with his tape. He will get recruited over if he comes here.

  • @Kcmatt7 said in 2021 Recruiting:

Don’t see him moving the needle for next year that’s for sure.

I REALLY want TyTy. He is an absolute dog and offers something we don’t really have on the roster…

  • @Kcmatt7

Funny his ranking went up a bunch this yr. Tape is so so. He is a big guard that can create and shoot and defends. Not a really fast twitch athlete

  • I feel like, other than a stud point guard maybe, most of the players we pick up aren’t going to be better than the players currently on the roster. I wouldn’t be opposed to giving Dajuan Harris a lot of minutes next season.

  • Can find always find better players. This was literally the worst offensive team Self has ever had and it wasn’t close. Not expecting bad shooters to magically get better. I think Self is doing the right thing, find 2 to 3 guys that can shoot and fill needs and hope the additions make a difference in how guys play

Bates would be far below TyTy and Pettiford if it were up to me.

  • Bossi just said KU isn’t interested.

  • @BShark

Agree those 2 guys are considerably better then bates at this stage. Athletic ability is on another planet for them too

  • I mean players do get better. Frank Mason was a 32.7% 3-point shooter and 66.7% FT shooter as a freshman and a 47.1% 3-point shooter and 79.4% FT shooter as a senior. Players develop and get better. Dajuan Harris looks like he could be really good, so does Jalen Wilson. Maybe Clemence or Adams show potential next season. Maybe Bryce will improve with a full and normal offseason and a hopefully healthy sophomore season. Instead of trying to look for a quick fix and get a 1-year rental who probably won’t be much better than a player currently on our roster, maybe we should recruit freshman and give them time to develop and play with each other.

Who? Who’s the transfer that’s going to magically transform our team next season?

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich Idk. I think this year is the exception considering the types of guys leaving programs this year. And the reality is if you aren’t getting a transfer who can play big minutes for you this day and age then you are doing a poor job recruiting.

Literally every single elite 8 team has a transfer playing big minutes for them. Several of the teams have like 2 or 3 playing big minutes.

The transfer market is a lot deeper and more talented than it was even 5 years ago.

We are definitely hoping for improvement out of Bryce. I would bet money on 4, possibly 5 new faces.

  • A highschool recruit that moves the needle for next year…

The fact of the matter is KU needs an infusion of talent, proven scorers and athleticism.

Names to watch: TyTy Washington, Brandon McKissic, Stanley Umude, Christian Bishop, Bobby Pettiford (believe he is the plan B for TyTy and that the staff really wants a HS point guard).

And the Top 6 players on the team next season are still going to be Dave, Jalen, Agbaji, Braun, Thompson, and Harris.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich Very real chance Agbaji isn’t on the team.

  • If Harris is a top 6 player we aren’t going to be very good. If Bryce is as well without much improvement we could miss the tournament…

That said I believe Bill is going to improve the roster.

  • I guess we’ll see. I have very little faith in transfers moving the needle much for Kansas. I’m all for acquiring young talent that’s going to stick around for multiple years.

Normally I would agree but there is, relative to college hoops, elite talent littering the portal this year.

I am glad that the staff really wants a HS PG though. We need to close on one.

  • @BShark I would be very surprised if Ochai was not on the roster.

  • @BShark Agreed. I don’t see the point of rolling out the same squad we saw this year into next season. The roster makeup of last season alone killed us. I think some underestimate how impactful someone like Bishop would be on next year’s squad.

Then you throw in a couple of guys who can actually drive the ball to get a bucket and voila, you have a group who might not go on 8 minute scoreless stretches weekly.

  • @KirkIsMyHinrich

We did just have a team made up of guys that stuck around. That team lost in the 2nd round. Always a catch 22. If that same core stays maybe we get even better teams the next 2 years with an influx of talent via the High School and transfer market. I think that is what Self is really trying to get. He needs 1-2 guards and then whatever else shakes off the tree.

Tyty Washington can move the needle. A transfer like McKissic would give us bench shooting and defense. I think he looks to fill specific needs like having another pg with Harris and then something else to compete and get away from forcing wings to be guards which Braun and Agbaji are. We shall see. Its gonna be interesting

Not really. Garrett and Agbaji were the only returning players who averaged more than 20 minutes per game in the 19-20 season. We have a lot more returning minutes next season (Agbaji and Braun over 30, Wilson and Dave over 20, and Thompson and Harris over 15).

A young point guard would be great, and maybe another guard that can fill an Isaiah Moss type role. I’m excited about next season’s team, but it’s mostly because I believe in player development and team chemistry and think that there is a lot of good talent on the current KU roster.

Agree with @BShark that if that is, in fact, our top 6 players next year, then it will be a long and frustrating year. It’s the same team that lost games to long and athletic teams by 34, 25 and 19 points this year. Minus it’s best defensive player (by far) and the only player who could semi-consistently finish on drives.

I don’t know how much they could improve just with an additional year of experience, but that would be a team seriously lacking in speed and athleticism. Who among that 6 can take a reasonably good defender off the dribble to the hoop and finish? Who can create his own shot - maybe Thompson, who demonstrated earlier in the year that he has a decent pull up shot from 12-15ft? Who can consistently knock down 3s? On the other end, who can shut down a top flight scorer? Who can stop quick guards or wings from penetrating?

We were under .500 against at large caliber teams this year. And, most of the wins we did get were against teams that didn’t get past the first round (Baylor coming off layoff and a 1 point win against Creighton that won 2 games in the tourney).

Whether through transfers or recruits, we need a serious upgrade of talent, esp. a real honest-to-goodness PG, to improve on this year…

  • Wouldn’t mind another PG from North Carolina tbh…last two worked out…

  • Jonas Aidoo officially back on the market.

This is the guy I’m more worried about missing out on. We clearly had guard/wing issues but IMO our main issue was having no back bone in the paint

  • @rockchalkwyo In a perfect world, we replace Gethro with him.

Dunno yet if KU is pursuing here again.

Absolutely agree about player development and chemistry. That should improve if a majority of this core returns. An offseason will help there as well, pick up, S&C, etc. Any time you possibly can return 4 of your 5 top scorers you have a really good chance to build something.

My issue is I don’t believe those 4 guys are good enough. Just calling it how I see it. We may disagree which is totally fine, I think its a good discussion to have about the projection of next years team anyway (we are in the long offseason now). Dave, Ochai, Christian, Jalen have big enough flaws in their game to be worried one offseason won’t correct enough of it. Don’t get me wrong I think if all 7 rotation guys return we’re very capable of winning the Big-12 and having a better W/L record, getting a Top 2 seed but I’m worried without a talent infusion the ceiling of this team is not that much higher in March.

It’s hard to win games and even harder when your go-to offensive talent is on the floor just over half the game. We have to hope Dave has one heck of an offseason. Agbaji did make improvements in his perimeter shot, maybe he’s got another leap but he is coming up on year 4 without ball handling skills that would make him one of the games premiere scorers. His defense slipped as well, probably a direct result of having to shoulder more offensive load and playing heavy minutes. Agbaji is career 43% fg shooter, Braun 40%, Wilson, not a consistent shooter from anywhere on the court, Thompson 35%. The bottom two especially concerning considering they were our top rated recruits in their respective classes. Self saying they needed to get bigger and more athletic is only half of it, you also need guys that can put the ball in the basket. The drop off from Dave & Ochai to the bench was a big problem. Currently Self doesn’t really have an answer for those two guys backups going into next season. We signed 3 bigs so far and its hard to be confident any of them will be ready to contribute in a serious role right now. They are talented, they have differing skill sets but its a big unknown. TGF is gone and I think 1-2 more spots are likely opening up as well.

Another PG is a must have at this point. And Self is aggressively seeking one. I also think he wants another combo guard and hopes they are good enough to start or push the young Harris/Thompson duo. Adding two guards also could solve the issue Self has with Agbaji/Braun. They have redundant skill sets. Braun would be a great rotation wing, did well as a freshman as a 6th man type. He never looked fully comfortable playing big minutes and really struggled offensively. That would give Self potentially 6 guard/wings to distribute minutes too. Let’s see how it all plays out

  • Jonas Aidoo back on the market. The perfect backup to Dave… Figure the sharks will be coming for him this time around

Same here, not so much on Tyty though. Anybody have better insider info to help boost my outlook?

  • If we could get another scholi to open - - which I think is a done deal then here is what I 'd love to see. - - Pettiford - - - Ty Ty - & Adoo would be pretty dam good additions.

I know hearing from BShark - -Adoo more likely then not N Carolina but doesn’t hurt to dream does it ?

Love his game - -fluid can extend the floor , has a 7’5 wingspan ( case you haven’t figured that out - - that’s big time - - - -# 33 in the Nation by Rivals kind of a late developer, could be some better on the Boards 6.5 rebounds per - -averaged 3 blocks per game - Good shot blocker has a sweet turnaround J KU was the # 2 contender in his initial recruitment right behind Marquette.

I know probably no shot But like Martin Luther King famous saying " I HAVE A DREAM " - -I HAVE A DREAM - -doesn’t hurt , stranger things have happened. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY
