No Silvio

  • @FarmerJayhawk He’s done. I’m not piling on and wish him well, but he has issues.

  • This post is deleted!

  • @approxinfinity He performed well for a short stretch, but he has also cost us - no pun intended - plenty.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Come on… You don’t really believe that, do you?

  • @wissox he isn’t going to get a degree. And he has been there damn near 4 years.

His guardian always maintained he kept Silvio in the dark around all his shady stuff. As @BShark eluded to, this is how it’s done with a lot of international kids.

  • @Marco This semester would’ve been his 6th semester of college, still would’ve been a semester short if on a non accelerated degree plan.

  • I still think we need to learn some lessons about recruiting some of these players. It seems like the more we have to go through to get them here the less we get out of them. Now we have to deal with long term damage.

  • After last year with Silvio, I could sense he wasn’t going to pan out.

  • If barely taking down a team of 8 McDonald’s All Americans with a 200 level recruit as your assassin senior PG, two highly touted international guys that developed into 4 year talent, a 5 star transfer who fizzled at Miss St and wanted a do-over, an all defensive guy with a funky jumpshot, and a guy who only finished half his high school senior year before getting the call is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.

This game was only second to our championship in 2008. Tell me how we win that game without Silvio? Tell me how much damage was avoided by Grayson Allen’s stupid psycho face not having the satisfaction?

NOT TODAY, Duke! I felt proud for a month after that game. NOT TODAY!

  • I like Silvio and I defended him his entire time here. But I’m willing to bet we will be better off with his departure. Our best chances of going far exists when we limit distractions. Silvio, whether it was his fault or not, brought distraction. This also helps clear up our post play time as well as the concept of trying to run two bigs at a time. We’ve got plenty of height, perhaps could use another beef guy, but I’d rather have speed than beef to go with height.

We have a few unknowns with this team, but so far, I’m liking our potential.

  • @drgnslayr

Agree with a lot of this post in terms of distraction.

This is a hit to depth though unless Mitch and the freshman can hold their own. This team gets small if Dave is on the bench. There will be teams that can exploit that. I hope Dave is up for the Challenge because he’s about to become as important to the frontcourt as Azubuike was at times last year.

Exactly. Silvio wasn’t likely to get a ton of minutes but now Gethro might have to play some.

A 3rd big whether KU plays a 4-1 all the time still has value. In a non-normal season like we have this year with the threat of Covid added, having that extra depth can really be advantageous. This definitely cements the 4-1 offense if it wasn’t already and places even more importance on Dave staying out of foul trouble and being healthy (Covid or Injury). It’s a good thing KU has plenty of 6’8 types to throw out there.

This years team really feels like a passing of the guard, as far as normal roster construction we expect under Self and the scheme they are likely to run all year.

  • Better to just force Bill to run 4 guards than him putting it in midseason. Build that chemistry.

FF year that is how it was. Let the threes fly baby.

  • @BeddieKU23 it does. Though less Herculean than what Devon was asked to do. At least we have a smart and versatile upperclassman at PG. (no knock on Devon. I thought what he did in two years was the greatest work by any true 2 year player under Self)

  • @BeddieKU23 Completely agree. Better to have Silvio even as the third big than not. I can understand why he would want to leave, or if he was forced out etc I’m not sure why I said might tbh, Gethro is going to play now. Couldn’t tell you win it will be but you aren’t going the whole season only playing Dave and Mitch. I guess maybe Tristan could do spot duty again? Oh god please no.

@Kcmatt7 I think that was 100% locked in with or without Silvio. Though now it will be 100% of the time no doubt.

  • @BeddieKU23

We’ve got length, just not super length (like Doke)… what we maybe could use is some girth. I’m not so sure that will be a big factor except with maybe a handful of teams all year.

I’m pretty happy if we can go guard the trey line!

Sometimes it is hard to see the glass half full. We can fret over not having girth and the possibility that will challenge us down low. What do you think the teams with girth will worry about when playing us? We’ll have height and some quickness out on the perimeter. Many were bagging on David last year for not being able to guard the trey, remember?

Let’s just hope we can nail a decent % from trey this year. This would be a great year to have proficiency with the long ball!

Why now? - - Why did the Lawrence Police wait so long to bring this in ? - - This happened in January and they bring it forward in Sept ? - Here we are in the last of October and just now comes to light ?

Not saying he didn’t do this or he is not guilty BUT why did it take this long for the Lawrence Police to bring this forward I don’t get it

  • @drgnslayr

We definitely have length. The avg starting height for this team should be among the biggest in the country. Harris is the only player likely to play rotation minutes that’s under 6’5. Teams will have issues matching that.

Big-12 has a lot of quality bigs this year. Guys will have to step up to the plate and figure it out against those guys.

Agree about guarding the 3 point line.

Cautiously optimistic about how the team will shoot from 3 consistently. Agbaji is the one returning player that could really improve in that area.

Dave must improve on his awareness and ability to guard away from the basket. He’s going to be guarding guys on a consistent basis that can stretch the floor. That’s an effort thing and hopefully its something he’s worked on.

  • @BShark This is not good optics at all. I’d love to go a year without any stupid shit like this.

It paints a different picture now knowing that this came before the KSU brawl. He sure helped us with Duke in the FF but with the damage he’s caused KU, I’m glad he’s gone. Hopefully he gets the help he needs.

Side note… does anyone think that Self knew about this?

  • Officially done defending Silvio. KU really moved mountains to make sure he could stay, then the does a couple really dumb things and is basically leaving in disgrace.

@rockchalkwyo I doubt it. It would be pretty out of character for Self to know about it and not do anything. Vick, Bragg, Giles, Jackson etc. were all suspended immediately when Self knew about legal issues.

  • So Silvio beat the shit out of someone after leaving a New Year’s party at one of the bars/clubs on Mass St. it sounds like.

I’m guessing Silvio was blackout drunk if he doesn’t remember the incident, but I’m still wondering why it took LPD almost 9 months to investigate this incident and present the case to the DA’s office?

This did strike me as odd, “Dorothy Kliem, trial assistant for the Douglas County district attorney’s office, said via email that the DA’s office received an affidavit and reports from the Lawrence Police Department on Sept. 30. She said the office received an updated affidavit from LPD on Oct. 16, then filed the case on Monday.”

Did nobody see anything the night of the incident? If they did, why didn’t they call the cops? You don’t charge a felony for a minor tussle leaving a bar.

  • The time between the incident and charges being filed is definitely odd. But for them to file charges they must have some sort of evidence he did something he shouldn’t have.

Exactly what I was wondering and stated. - - -WHY ? - -Why did they take 9 months to present this case – just don’t know.

  • Well. If this is true I’m probably done defending Silvio as well. What a bummer.

  • The hits just keep coming with Silvio. Pattern of bad behavior follows him

  • This post is deleted!

  • @BeddieKU23

Dave was hard to recognize in that scrimmage tape because he has improved his body so much. He’s dropped a ton of baby fat weight. It almost has to help him get out there and guard the trey.

Self mentioned that Dave will be a big time threat in the low and mid post area. That will be one more factor where teams have to sink in if he starts dominating.

Otherwise… we’ve got height and speed on the perimeter, and guys who can drive the rack.

That all points to so many options where we can free up some wide open treys. If that be the case, even if we have questionable shooters, we should still hit a decent percent. I think Christian is going to dazzle on the trey.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 said in No Silvio:

I’ve seen cases take 3 years to hit the bench. There are many reasons… waiting on a witness/evidence, short on staff in DAs office, etc.

“I like Silvio and I defended him his entire time here. But I’m willing to bet we will be better off with his departure. Our best chances of going far exists when we limit distractions.”

Worth repeating. I wish Silvio well with his life, he needs help and probably some growing up. Regardless… time to close the book on Silvio and move on.

  • @drgnslayr

Agree about Dave’s body he looked much improved. I think the new Strength Coach has done very well so far with these guys.

Agree about Christian he should be the top shooter on the team unless Thompson hits the ground running there

  • @BeddieKU23

It looks like Ramsey has become invaluable! Thought it would be hard to replace Hudy… and it was… but Ramsey brings several helpful elements to this team both in strength and other areas. His strength/conditioning cred should be on full show this year!

  • @drgnslayr

With his NBA experience I think that gave him the opportunity to excel right off the bat. College Kids are going to look up and buy into a guy with his reputation and experience working with professionals. Very smart hire for Self after Hudy left…

  • Big Dave has come a long way McCormackLoaded_t300.jpg

  • @BeddieKU23

Christian shot 44% from trey last year and he didn’t even show full confidence most of the time. He was learning our system, getting used to D1, his teammates getting used to him. That 44% was impressive, though I think he’ll have to fight to keep it up there this year as he will have pressure to pump up more shots.

  • @drgnslayr

He should shoot over 40% this season even with more attempts. Has excellent form and confidence in his shot… I’m expecting he’s a full time starter and an invaluable part of the team. He was a real surprise last season and im very excited to see him this yr

  • @BeddieKU23

We are on the same page about Christian. Let’s hope he comes through with consistency because we will definitely need consistency this year.

  • @drgnslayr I think that he is a future pro

  • @drgnslayr

Outside of Garrett I believe Christian will be the most consistent player on the team. That’s how much of an impression he made on me last season.

  • I agree about Braun. He rarely was on the floor and not contributing positively in some way . I will say there were games early on when Enaruna sparkled in a similar manner, then lost his way in conference play. I’d love to see that kid figure it out. With his length and stroke it feels like he could make a difference on both ends.

  • @BShark

    Good grief. Can’t defend that

  • @BShark Oof. I hate to be that guy, but some mildly argued with me when he left as I blamed him in the KState incident. I’m done with him. Sad story. Hope he can figure out how to avoid all of this trouble that he’s in the middle of.

  • @wissox You never received any arguments from me. So ready for us to move on from the guy that it isn’t even funny.
