I’m extremely interested to see how KU performs in Waco playing 4 out the whole time and hopefully everyone stays healthy unlike the first game.
FWIW KU stayed with Baylor the second half. Came within 4 (I believe) without Dotson. As soon as he came in that’s when we lost momentum. If I remember correctly

We’re gonna beat that ass silly
-
@jayballer73 go back and rewatch the game, got layups off of loose balls rolling right to them and a couple of off balanced 3s late in the clock. They did control most of it but those lucky shots played a big hand in it.
-
This is a down year in college basketball. Watched the Duke/UNC game yesterday and it was like watching a high school game.
I still think our hype over how great our defense is is largely overhype. We still leave trey shots wide open, miss assignments, make unnecessary switches, sometimes go under ball screens, fail to play to scouting reports and hedge properly, fail to seal off the boards, and we still haven’t learned how to play a hyper Nova-style swarming defense… am I missing something?
But we do play good “fuzzy defense.” We stay fairly close to the ball and Doke is in the paint. Doke seems to improve his defense almost every single game now! I can tell he has been studying Withey footage. Withey understood the path a basketball had to take to get to the basket, and that is all that counts because he would meet the ball somewhere in that path.
My optimism for March is largely focused on Doke’s improving defense. Hey… it worked against us in 2012 to give Calipari his only crown with the unibrow!
We’ve already proven we can win without offense. How many teams heading to March Madness will know that?
-
I think this defense gets in people’s heads. They do play well together defensively which is what you want to see. Last years team didnt play for each other. Having 3 really solid guard defenders and a eraser at the rim in Doke has really made life difficult for teams. Hard to remember a Self team defending this way in at least 6-7 yrs
-
Gotta rebound! They miss a lot

Well I understand , but it’s ok - you can still give them credit - -it’s going to be ok, they are # 1 for a reason, they have done something that the OTHER # 1 teams wasn’t able to do this season and that is they have continued to win AFTER being ranked #1 whether they win at home or on the road, - -that’s a mark of a good team. Just go out and win , doesn’t matter if it is an Ugly win , a lucky win or a Rout - - a win is a win whether you win by 1 OR 21 still counts the same.
You said loose balls right? - -so that means there was no team control , means it’s all about who is willing to go after the ball more - - who wants it more. Could they lose ? - -Sure they can , they are human , they are going to turn you over, they’re guards a VERY GOOD - - VEERY GOOD that’s what happens when good guards pressure, look at our guards - awesome on the defensive end. - Like 9 steals a game - -that’s beyond good. you might be surprised at how much luck does play in a lot of games , not just Baylor. - we have had our share of luck throughout the years.
Them getting lucky is just like luck playing a part in the NCAA Championship games at times. Luck plays a part to an extent in almost any game - -we gonna be fine. - -Will we win at Baylor? - who knows? - I sure the hell don’t , do I think we win ? I hope so but yet I’m not willing to bet the farm on it. – ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

@BeddieKU23 I think it’s time to start talking about Baylor as a dominant team. The last time they lost was a long time ago. They beat us by double digits at home.
If they hold serve against KU and win the Big-12 then I’ll agree. They have been very impressive this season so far and Jared Butler put on a clinic in Allen Fieldhouse. I have watched their last 10-12 games and a few things make me hesitant about calling them dominant if we are comparing them to past great teams in College BBall but they deserve their ranking and accolades. Going to be a heck of a showdown in Waco
-
FYI.
Devon Dotson leads the Conference in scoring at 18 ppg. He’s also 2nd in steals per game & 6th in assists per game.
Udoka Azubuike leads the Conference in Rebounding at 9.7 pg. He also leads the Conference in FG% & is 2nd in Blocks Per Game at 2.6. Stud.
Marcus Garrett is 5th in Assists per game but #1 in the league for being a complete bad-ass defender and team player. His assist to turnover ratio is tops in the Conference.
These hawks are good individually and as a team

Well, one game we don’t have to worry about at all is ISU at home. Halliburton out for the year with a wrist fracture.

@BeddieKU23 has it been broke the whole yr?
-
@BeddieKU23 So, how did this happen? Surely Self, after all these years, didn’t wake up before the season and say " Oh, what the heck, let’s play some defense this year".
Did the team just evolve? Did they say " Nobody can put the ball in the hoop so we may as well just play good defense"?
Either way, I personally love to see the good “D”. Love to see the opponents scoring in the 40’s and 50’s.

Athletes to defend that are willing to do it. The team really bought in this year.

We have a bunch of really good individual and team defenders: Dot is pesky, Marcus is Gary Payton 2.0, Ochai is solid, and Doke is the eraser behind everything. It’s really amazing how big a difference a good rim protector makes in Self’s system.
-
I think this team has learned their identity is defense. It is how they are winning games, and players want to win.
Once they accept it as their identity they believe more in what Self has been teaching them all along… defense!
You can see how their energy picks up higher on defense than on offense. They are taking some pride in getting stops.
I remain hard on them because they still have so much they can improve on. If they can improve in the second half of the season like they did in the first half, we should go far in March.
Marcus has made a big impact on this team by leading by example. His energy is contagious. So glad he will be back next year, too!

According to NBC, he fell on it against KSU snd couldn’t return to the game. MRI yesterday, and they announced today it’s broken.
-
@mayjay I saw that, I think it’s been hurt all year.

@BeddieKU23 it’s weird most KU fans seem down on the team but it’s our best shot at a title in awhile.
I am not one of those people - absolutely love this year’s team.
-
The West Virginia game is sold out. They better bring their big boy pants.
-
Sometimes I wonder how good we are and then I watch other games and yeeeeaaaaah.
-
Mercy now we all know there is no way Marcus gonna do that on a regular bases , But like was said if we can get some shooting Oachi with 2- – -Moss with 2 - – Braun with 1 - -then even if we could get Marcus to maybe hit 1-2 .
If we play like we did today , guys I’m telling you we are freaky good - -I just have not seen a defense like this. At times these guys will just flat choke you out
-
Teague has a sprained wrist, couldn’t tell which one. He’s suppose to play tues. rebounding is key. Guarding the 3
-
Braun a better boarder but game to big?
-
He’s a fighter

@BShark The odds will be much more accurate when the bracket is put together.
-
No one can predict what will happen, the trouble is we have had so many teams that should’ve won a title.
-
KU back to #1 in Adj DE on Ken Pom. Offense is up to #9.
-
Lawdamercy
-
I find it interesting that someone gave Baylor 2 first places votes. I suppose that’s somewhat fair with us splitting but wouldn’t expect it right after we beat them.
-
That offense creeping up before our own eyes. 4 point difference in AdjEm continues to spread. This team is awesome
-
Doke was 6 of 7 from the field, 7-8 from the line, with 16 rebounds. He made 19 of the 22 possible points he attempted and only potentially rebounded himself once.
We shot 28-64 (43.8%), but if you subtract his rebounds from our 64 shots attempted, we shot 28-48 (58.3%), and that includes 10-28 from 3, a healthy number of attempted 3s.
-
@kjayhawks ehh KU still got one after losing by 12 at home to Baylor ️

Sure looks like we are starting to gel/come together - - hitting full stride at the right time for a change - - hitting enough 3’s to keep people honest , driving the ball , ridiculous defense , THE BEAST HAS AWOKEN ( DOKE ) - - rebounding well - everything is fallin in place. - -Glad to see Tristian get some floor time Braun continue to get more - - - these guys could sure be some how with spot minutes more Tristian than Barun - -Cause we all know Braun gonna be just fine - -but Tristian getting some PT can’t do anything but help – Hell even getting Silvio back will help with depth another body and spot minutes - - ALL VALUABLE - -We A BAD TEAM – at times can be Scary good. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

4 Guard offense. Sticking with Moss as the 4th guard. Dotson healthy, Garrett looks healthier. Guys just maximizing their roles and continuing to play for each other and having fun doing so. And then there’s Doke just dominating games. I’m having a ton of fun watching this group

@dylans I went to the Badgers game last night and now they’re ranked for the first time all year!
I was looking at SOS on ESPN’s site and Big 12 and BIG have the top 15 slots for SOS. Two really tough leagues.

A lot of balance in both leagues. I think the B1G is more crowded in the middle, without a really strong team at the top, while the Big XII has two really strong teams, two really weak teams, and 6 in the middle that are very solid.
I don’t think either league has really tested their top teams. Other than Baylor, KU hasn’t really been tested by a top notch team in the conference. Same for Baylor (despite the loss to a middling TCU team).

Seems like since King was canned the team has found new life. Who woulda thought…
-
@BeddieKU23 Yeah, that seemed to be a turning point. A strange one. He wasn’t canned by the way, he quit on the team. I’d be feeling pretty crappy if i was him because every Badger fan now says the turnaround was because he left town. Incredibly, the Badgers, one game behind Maryland could win the BIG. We play Northwestern which got their 2nd league win last night when Nebraska made 8 of 30 FT’s. Then we go to Indiana which will be tougher. Maryland goes to Rutgers and gets OSU at home. We have the tiebreaker over Maryland. Pretty amazing.
@justanotherfan You’re right, Big12 has 8 different teams with shots at the dance. BIG has 8 ranked teams right now which are assumed to be locks, but Rutgers is on the good side of the bubble, and Indiana is as well. Barely above .500 Purdue has a pretty nice resume despite 14 losses overall.
-
Your right that’s what I meant but I didn’t word it properly. There was a time it seemed like the coach was on the red-hot seat. That seems to have subsided with them looking like a lock for the tournament. Indiana has been a tough place for Big-10 teams this year. Would be a big win if they get that especially with Indiana needing wins on the bubble
