19-20 Schedule

  • That is 4 conference games. There are 4 non-conference games and both exhibitions on ESPN + as well. So a total of 10 games. Pretty ridiculous.

  • I really like ESPN+. The original programming is really good (Peyton’s Places is hysterical, and of course Miles to Go). I also like how everything KU related is archived to watch on-demand, including Hawk Talk and all that. Pretty good bargain for $50/year.

  • This is the way TV is going. In my opinion, it’s a good thing. I only pay for what I watch and it’s so much cheaper. I get local channels on an antenna. And I get everything else streamed. In my opinion, it’s better.

    • Netflix - $16
    • Hulu + Live TV - $45
    • HBO - $15
    • Prime - $13
    • ESPN + - $5
    • Showtime - $11
    • Disney - $7

You can get all that for $112. Which is what it costs for the middle-tier of DirecTV. Fiber TV is $90 a month and doesn’t offer near as many channels.

If you’re smart, you split all of those subscriptions with friends and pay $30-40 a month.

  • @Kcmatt7 The other cost involved in that is an internet provider. Depending on those options and deals people have, streaming is not guaranteed to be cheaper at this point for everyone.

My mom still has a bundle deal with Comcast because that’s still cheaper for what she needs at this point than dropping cable.

If I factor in my internet, I’m paying about $60 for internet, $60 for PSVue (whatever the tier below the premium movie channel tier is called), half of whatever the middle tier is for Netflix, $5 for ESPN+, and nothing for Hulu because that’s a free add on from my Spotify subscription. I’m paying between $130-140 per month including internet so not bad. My mom has about 100 more channels than me and is paying about $150 per month including internet.

  • It is the way it’s going… Not too long ago, Pretty much every KU game I could watch for “free”, because of espn 3 (you of course had to have espn as part of your cable package, which pretty much everyone did) But with the powerhouse elite programs, they realized there were many people all over the country and beyond who follow their respective team, like all of us in KU Nation, so why not make us pay ? We are all going to sign up for espn plus - what choice do we have?

  • @Kcmatt7 100% agree. We all complained for years that we couldn’t get channels a la carte but now we basically can for a cheaper price, and you can split costs like you said. I split my Netflix, Prime, and ESPN+ accounts with my sister so we get all that for less than $20/month. I have my own YouTube TV sub for $45. So $60/month gets me all the sports channels I want (sans NFL Network, but meh), all the cool stuff Netflix is doing, and Prime video. My internet is slightly more expensive than it was when I bundled it with cable but on net I’m saving about $30/month and getting better stuff to watch.

I get quality internet for $30/mo from Spectrum and then I split most of the subs I listed above between 4 households. So, in my case, it’s impossible to find a cheaper bundle.

But I could see how some would still get a better deal from a bundle.

Yea sort of funny imo. A lot of complaining on twitter about it… I spend less than $60 a month for internet and basically anything I want to watch on TV. Really hard to complain.

  • Some people are just cheapskates.

@Kcmatt7 I’m all about that sub share life.

  • Its $4.99 for ESPN plus folks, you get access to any replays of the games on the ESPN networks, hawk talk for BB and FB, and post game shows. People act like its $500 a month. Out here in the sticks I like because I cant get Cox or Time Warner, Kansas is full of rural areas that this helps.

  • I don’t have a problem with the five bucks a month, but ESPN+ looks like crap streamed through my (supposedly) smart TV. I’ve got 100Mbps internet and it looked like low-resolution dial up. I’m going to try running it through a laptop sometime before Saturday and see if it’s better. It’s just a pain in the ass compared to pulling up a local channel.

  • @kjayhawks it’s not about money to me, I get it. My mom won’t get in rural KS, and most of that generation. I can’t believe a top 10 ten team will probably only have 2 teams watching us. Duke, Kentucky, MSU they have to stream their games? Recruits gonna love this idea? I think this is a big step down for our program.

  • @DanR so much for being a blue blood!

    Completely agree.

  • I also predict that before the UMKC game (now “Kansas City Roos” love the rebrand, minimizing the Missouri connection LOL )–game they will work out a deal with a local KC/Topeka channel. Probably will happen even a few weeks earlier if Jeff Long plans to show his face around in Lawrence… 14900 in AFH still leaves a lot of pissed off locals.

  • Those of you streaming: can you leave for a couple weeks and still record off all of your channels, and watch in every TV in your house without changing signins?

  • Yeah, this is kind of like going back to the 80’s and 90’s when we didn’t get to watch all the games. I’ve gotten so accustomed to watching everything that it’s kind of discouraging. I doubt the Big 12 starts their own network like the BIG but I really like that. They get to do any game ESPN doesn’t want.

As of 2017, 77.5% of Kansas households had broadband subscriptions. 90% have access to broadband. Broadband access is above the national average. 91% of rural folks have broadband access. I’m sorry but I really can’t fault KUAD for taking more money to inconvenience less than 1 out of 10 households in the state.

And let’s be honest. Recruits don’t watch games that aren’t on Big Monday or Super Tuesday. Depending on their region, their families may not get SECN or ACCN. Anyone can get games on ESPN+, regardless of region. If you want a scapegoat for Big 12 TV access, look to Austin.

  • @mayjay if I understand you right, I think the old games are always on there and you can replay them anytime.

  • mayjay said:

All games are available on demand. I have YouTube TV and have a library of KU games going back months. I have it set to record all KU sports and that’s that.

  • @Crimsonorblue22 @FarmerJayhawk Thanks, but I was talking about programming in general, not the games. For people who substitute streaming packages for what I get with cable, they have to have several different stream providers coming to their TVs. I get over 300-350 channels, all of which I can set to record on my Spectrum provided DVR up to 2 weeks in advance. Plus, I can record every episode of a series for months, all set automatically.

My question is, can streaming duplicate that ability to record, including real time on broadcast networks? A salesman for one of them kept deflecting this question to the ability to search 100,000 shows and movies and find anything I wanted to watch. I told him I don’t want to search archives, I want to browse among about 10 to 25 shows I have chosen already. He had to admit streaming services cannot give you all the channels and the DVR capability we have with cable. And if you have a private DVR, he admitted, you can’t easily switch between services to, say, record from two at once. (Note: we still cannot do that for any subscriptions like Amazon Prime–which we have anyway–but we have almost everything we watch available on cable. So far, the Netflix/Hulu shows do not appeal enough to add more.)

    So, has this changed?

  • @FarmerJayhawk Is your library available when the internet is down?

  • @mayjay I think your cable guy was selling you down the river. YTTV allows you to record all programs related to specific teams (e.g. KU men’s basketball). It does it automatically as those programs appear. So I can see the TCU game right now when I search and it’s set to record. I didn’t tell it what time or channel, only to look for KU football. It also is smart enough to record when the game runs past its scheduled time, so you’ll get the whole game no matter what. No, you won’t be able to access anything if your internet is down. It’s never been an issue for me honestly. My internet goes down maybe 15 minutes a month at most barring some kind of severe weather, in which case cable may go down as well depending on the delivery mechanism.

  • @FarmerJayhawk As I said, I am talking about all the other programming–major networks, plus HGTV, TCM, HBO, TNT, AMC, TBS, etc etc etc. And it was a streaming salesman, not cable.

“It also is smart enough to record when the game runs past its scheduled time, so you’ll get the whole game no matter what.”–That would be nice. I always have to adjust recordings in case of 60 Minutes when CBS has the 4:00 game.

  • @mayjay There is a TiVo box for over the air antennas as well. https://antennadeals.com/DVRVideoRecorder.html We Americans love our tv and by god want to make sure no one misses a minute. Lol. I don’t know of a way to record live streaming that isn’t thru the provider.

  • I had amazon prime and internet and Netflix when I had cable. Got rid of cable a few years ago and I’m $120 a month ahead. It doesn’t matter what you have you’ve got to get ESPN+ now to watch 1/4 of the KU b-ball games. Heady play by ESPN. I’m bummed my free scrip ran out last month, but I haven’t used it to watch a show since KU basketball ended, it’s the articles on ESPN’s web site I’m irked I can’t read.

  • Well I just subscribed to ESPN/Plus - -again. – had it last season , but during the down time just not interested enough on things they had to offer on there for even FIVE dollars a month.

So I cancelled but now that we are in football season/ - -then Basketball and on top of that watch this HUGE ladies Soccer game tonight - -we are ranked 14th in the Nation 7-1 - and BYU is 7th in the Nation coming in - - can see that on ESPN/Plus - and Volleyball although looks like not so good of year but pull for the ladies - -So it’s worth the 5 dollars during the sporting season for me. - - Comes in really well on my Desk Top Computer. - - with so many of the Basketball games on Plus I’m not missing these when it’s just 5 dollars. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • @jayballer73 you watch them on your desktop?

  • I will wait 2 months before subscribing to ESPN+. And they probably know lots of people will, as more of their rights contracts take effect with a new BB season. So don’t be surprised when they announce a price increase right before the season starts!

  • Does anyone know when tickets generally go on sale for games in the Sprint Center?

I’m attending my first Jayhawk game December 14th (bummed its not in Allen) but falls on the same weekend as a Chiefs/Broncos game which I’m also going to. Just wondering if anyone knows when they typically go on sale, trying to plan ahead!

I don’t, but I also wouldn’t worry too much. I went to the Sprint Center game last year and it wasn’t even close to sold out.

I got tickets to the Champions Classic again this year… I do still need to get plain tickets though. I need to quit pushing that off.

  • @mayjay It’s been $5 as long as I’ve had my subscription to ESPN+ which was pretty soon after it launched.

No not trying to confuse - but yes I watch ESPN Plus off my desktop computer - gonna watch the ladies Soccer tonight off ESPN Plus viewing it off my desk top
