Coastal Carolina Chanticleers

  • CC is worse than ISU. I’m not worried about the OLine long term. I think they just need a couple of games to settle into their new positions in the case of the right side of the line. The left side was just fine last week.

The DLine is going to struggle because they don’t have the personnel to run a 3-4 up front. Kamara is a good pass rush DE, but KU doesn’t have a true NT or run stopping DE that’s also necessary for a good 3-4. Those are positions where going the JuCo make more sense and would pay quicker dividends at this point.

I have a feeling KU is going to be terrible against the run most of the year since the B12 has a lot of teams that run the ball well and isn’t the pass happy league many still associate with B12 football.

KU being a 10 point favorite now does support the belief that ISU is a better team than CC is and KU should have an easier time this week.

The line I’m going to be curious about is next Friday at BC. I’m guessing it’ll be 17-21 point range in favor of BC, but it’ll be telling if it’s much different than that.

Dorian will be in this neck of the woods Wednesday and Thursday but hopefully it turns out to the ocean. Might delay their travel if it hangs around too long.

CC moved over to Conway, SC for the week today. Their prep shouldn’t be affected too much this week.

  • Looking at CC’s stats from last Saturday, I’m wondering if the “pass first” hung on them is because the couldn’t run at all. Do you think they’re primarily a passing team or were forced into it last week?

  • @Gorilla72 last year they ran more than they passed at about 2:1. They’d like to run it a lot more often.

Coastal also has a different head coach this year than last year. We don’t know yet if the new coach wants to keep that ratio or if he wants to pass more than they did last year.

He was their offensive coordinator last year so it would be very odd if he changed philosophy.

  • If I were playing balderdash Chanticleers would be defined as the sexual organs of a chandelier.

  • @dylans dirty mind

  • @Crimsonorblue22 I know! They don’t teach chandelier anatomy in school any longer, too risqué.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Is he still calling the plays though? If not, then it wouldn’t be surprising if they’re a more pass focused offense.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10 yep. Chadwell is still their play caller, and notoriously inflexible.

  • Jesse Newell has become overly critical of our football program since he started writing for the KC Star. Yes, Jesse it’s really easy to write about flaws and mistakes in a struggling program. That’s about the same level of journalism as standing on a Florida beach and reporting about the wind and waves. In a recent article Newell dissected and analyzed the two flawed offensive plays in the fourth quarter, all of which were obvious to everyone. Thanks for adding nothing to the discussion, Jesse. Oh yeah, Newell has KU losing to CC. We’ll see, hack.

I’m honestly surprised he ever comes to games since it’s probably really hard to fit his ego in the press box. Jesse is one of this new breed of jouros who firmly believes you can cover a subject very effectively and never really talk to said subject. Contrast with Gary Bedore who I’m 80% sure has a cot outside Self’s office. One guy gets scoops, the other plays with Excel and tells two Hall of Famers how to do their jobs.

  • @stoptheflop Jesse used to stop by KU Buckets and chat with us from time to time.

  • @FarmerJayhawk Death, where is thy sting? Jesse is young, and it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if he was given the assignment to be the heavy. He’s really a nice guy- he’s definitely not a KU hater in any way, shape, or form.

I don’t doubt that at all! It’s just a long-running frustration I have with the state of journalism.

  • @FarmerJayhawk We are living in a Skip Bayless world…

  • I liked jesse when he was at the Lawrence journal world, but I think he has gotten lazy and worse with each passing year. He used to have a good breakdown of not only plays but games. Now its captain obvious stuff that requires zero homework or brain capacity.

  • Sorry, but Jesse Newell is twice the writer as Bedore. Bedore is a pud. Newell actually knows the game (basketball). Bedore is a suck up as are most of the KU press crew. Years of stupid, softball questions asked with the sole purpose of maintaining their access. The KC Star uses Newell as an analyst, not a reporter. The KC Star is a rag, and it’s not surprising it would drag everyone that associates with it down the in the sewer.

Journalism? True journalism is dead. Completely dead. Zero credibility. Worse, purposefully and intentionally lying and distorting to serve their agenda. In other parts of the world, it was called propaganda.

@KUSTEVE You are so right, “living in a Skip Bayless world.” Can you believe he and Stephen A. Smith used to be on the same program? Goodness. Both are just disgusting, loudmouth, fools. It is exactly why the beautiful women we were discussing from decades ago are all that more beautiful … we got little snippets. We weren’t deluged with all of the crap we get today. You had some great names, by the way.

  • @HighEliteMajor I agree that journalism is in a bad way. If I’m ever back in Kansas during a buckets meetup I’ve got stories upon stories of journalistic malpractice from the Star.

Only point I’m making re: Newell is he still sells himself as a beat writer but doesn’t actually do that job. He’s basically an opinion guy now. Which is totally fine, I’m loathe to tell anyone what to print. Jesse just still says one every outlet he’s a straight reporter. Just be honest about it!

Bedore is an old fashioned reporter who values access, as most reporters do. I will gift credit to guys like John Hanna at the AP who also fits that mold. He was a pain in my rear end at one point but he was always fair and made the effort to get to know his subjects and be informed on the issues.

  • Finally, it’s game day. CC relied almost exclusively on #1 Marable at RB last week, 18 rushes for 49 yds. Marable is 5’10", 190 lbs. and a Junior. He was their leading rusher last year, 719 yds. Marable is also used as a receiver; last week-7 receptions for 84 yds. The QB is also used in the rushing game. With Pooka back, as long as the Oline does a better job, this should be a solid win for us. If we struggle against CC, like we did against ISU, it will be a very long year.

  • Does anyone know what the spread is on the game?

  • jayballer73 said:

    KU -7

  • Just watching some early games today, WV stinks and we should be able to give them a game IMO. KSU looks better than they have been since 2012. They will easily make a bowl and probably trounce us unfortunately. Jax Dineen is playing plenty for them and looking good, which is disappointing for us.

  • Carter Stanley’s decision making keeping it a game, has 15 yards of green in front of on first down. Instead of running he throws a pick into double coverage at the goal line. SMH that’s a salvation army level play by a redshirt senior.

  • Ugh! I’m not seeing any improvement on either side of the ball. Way too conservative on offense.

  • Welp

  • @stoptheflop I missed the first drive, but the reason the offense is conservative is because Carter Stanley can’t pass. He makes terrible decisions and gets spooked too soon. That second INT was an absolutely horrible decision by Stanley because he missed his window to hit Parchment. This really makes me wonder just how bad MacVittie looked in camp if he couldn’t beat Stanley out.

There’s no reason for opposing defenses to respect KU’s passing game as long as Stanley is the QB.

This is the difference between Stanley and Bender last year. Bender protected the football, made smart decisions, and was at least a good enough passer that defenses had to respect that. If I’m a defensive coordinator scheming against Stanley, I would have all my players within 10 yards to focus on the run and play man defense on the receivers exclusively because Carter Stanley isn’t beating anyone with his arm.

  • Not a good 4th down call. Just sneak it!

  • Another terrible 4th down call. That also shows how little confidence the staff has in the kicking game right now. No other reason not to kick a FG there with 14 minutes left.

  • Les Miles does many things well, but clock management has never been one of his strengths as a coach.

  • Obvious missed hold on the 4th down, still insanely stupid to burn all TOs on it.

  • That’s game folks

  • @kjayhawks Not yet, but I’m not holding my breath either though.

  • Now I’ll call game after that third failure on 4th down.

  • Beaty>Miles at this point piss poor play calling. Let’s get a QB that high school level.

  • We ain’t winning another game this season folks.

  • @kjayhawks Les Miles is a far superior coach to David Beaty. The biggest issue is KU doesn’t have a QB right now. Carter Stanley is a back up QB and I’ve been saying that for 4 years.

Hopefully Miles hands the reigns to Torry Locklin at some point this season because he’s the future at QB.

  • Carter Stanley sucks ass and that’s being nice.

  • @kjayhawks Have you watched West Virginia yet? They might actually be worse than KU.

I’m also never going to rule out upsetting TCU because KU plays them close basically every year for whatever reason.

  • I did and I think we can play with them but I’m not picking another win that’s for sure.

  • I hope with start someone else at QB and fire the OC on monday. I think we attempted 5 passes in the second half. Very little play action, one roll out that I can recall we got out coached tonight. You will never convince me of otherwise.

  • I feel for the Defense, they only let up 291 yards, 12 points and held them to 1 of 9 on 3rds down but still got beat.

  • Pooka is gone according to his dad at the game.

  • You cant lose this game. This loss alone loses 5 recruits. And I’ll eat my words if I’m not right. This program is toxic until they win some mf games. I didn’t get to watch a snap, but Stanley shouldn’t have ever started. Locking should have been the guy from day 1. The “he couldn’t handle it” excise is tired when you see freshman succeed all over the country. Freshman won a NC last season.

    Start the better player.

  • @kjayhawks A competent QB would make a world of difference with this team. That really is the biggest thing they’re missing on offense

The defense also doesn’t have the personnel to run a 3-4. They don’t have a NT to plug the middle or a big DE to stop the run. The LB’s are solid and KU’s secondary one of the best in the conference.

That 4th down sequence when Miles used the last two timeouts happened because he has zero faith in the kicking game right now.

A QB is the biggest game changing player in team sports and KU doesn’t have one right now.

I’m not gonna call for any heads yet, but there should be a change at QB because Stanley is a back up at best.

  • @Kcmatt7 He was a big factor in the loss, 2 picks, one with at least 10 yards of running in front of him. Not having a kicker was costly as well. @Texas-Hawk-10 I agree man, I’m just ticked because we should’ve won tonight.

  • @Kcmatt7 Lawrence didn’t begin the season as the starting QB though last season for Clemson, Kelly Bryant started the season at QB. Similar deal with Hurts and Tua and Bama. Tua didn’t play much his freshman year until the very end when he won the job.

  • kjayhawks said:

Yea I followed along as much as I could (at a wedding). The guy just doesn’t have the zip. I’ve legitimately seen better QB play at the NAIA level.

You should put up more than 12 points on a D1AA team. Defense could be better, but 7 points is a F-ING joke
