Are we back now?

  • The last year has been a doozy…

We experienced so much stress… our conference streak finally broke… a year below our normal standard… we’ve been challenged by the FBI and NCAA… our HOF’r coach has been scrutinized… we appear to be losing a bunch of talent and haven’t signed enough replacements… fans “duking” it with other fans…

I know we still have a pending case with Silvio…

But… for the most part… is it over?

Is the temporary “darkness” of anxiety passed?

Are we back to feeling good about the Jayhawk Nation?

We are in recruiting crunch time and I think it is fair to say that our coach may be the very best “11th hour recruiter” in America!

I’m feeling really excited about next year!

    I’m back!

    Are you?!

And not a Big 12 Championship ring. Necessarily.

  • KU might be back.

If both Tucker and Hampton go elsewhere, things could be challenging, even if Holyfield joins. I just don’t feel great about the backcourt (even assuming Dotson comes back) without another addition. I think there is universal agreement that McBride and Braun can be productive. But I think there is pretty universal agreement that the production probably won’t come next season.

That’s what makes Hampton and Tucker so inviting. They fill the gap next year before Braun and McBride take over larger roles in the following season.

KU is almost back. They are just missing one more piece (but hopefully adding two).

  • In short, no. A lot has to break our way in the next month.

  • I put the most weight on Devon coming back over everything else. I think he will…

We can expect big things from him next year!

  • Really hard to know because last year at this time we were being touted as a preseason #1. There’s a lot of question marks right now regarding next year. I like our experienced guys coming back, but as we’ve learned all too often, no matter how many stars and burger all star games our newbies have they still have to play games at the highest levels of college ball to really prove if we’re back or not.

  • I think we could be in great shape pending if the FBI probe ever actually gets anything from NCAA. SDS’s appeal is a big deal for us moving forward as well. As long as we don’t get a post season ban or have to vacate wins, we will be much better next season than this season. @wissox I never agreed with our preseason of number 1 last season to begin with but I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in that. UK and UNC were both preseason top 10 when they missed the dance so if our fall from grace is being ranked 18th and making the tournament, I’m okay with it.

  • wissox said:

Yes, and how’d that work out for us?? I really enjoy the years more when expectations are lower and we exceed them. How can you exceed the expectations of a preseason #1? Chances are they won’t even be met, and we will be disappointed.

I choose to embrace the cautious optimism suggested by @drgnslayr . Things are looking up, and it should be fun!

  • @justanotherfan @FarmerJayhawk Basically, getting back is how I’d put it. Now that the trial is over and it was a huge

everyone should be back to business as usual. Next class will hopefully be really good.

  • Unless we get some trey point shooters I am not so optimistic.

Ok . Ok, -have to confess. This is the 1st time I have seen McBride ball. - - Yes I know these are hi-lights - - so we seeing THE hi-lights - - -BUT you have to come away from that impressed.

I mean I by far am no expert of any means - -but you would have to be plain ass blind - - NOT to see that he has some sweet talent. I think he is going to be a very solid player for us in his years to come here for KU. Mercy had had some bad ass break your ankle moves that I seen two-three different times. - -Very good handles - - very good. - looks like he decision making with the ball is sweet - - -good distributor. - Looks sweet to me.

I know how important it is to go after the OAD’S guys - -I really do BUT I always am very happy to see these kind of guys - -guys that you know you will really have that chance to get to know better 3-4 year solid player - and he looks like he can very much help us in his 2-3rd year - It takes so much work for these guys to get where they want to be. - -I think when it’s all said and done - -were going to be very happy that this kid is a KU Baller. - and um the kid can flat out stroke the ball - 3-pt shot - looks really pure , nice form , follow through all I now need to say is - - -JUMPIN – -GEE - - HOSSA - - FATS man - -nice pickup. - -ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • I hope McBride pays off… but I put a question mark by his name until he can prove he can translate his game to D1. Being 6’ in high school isn’t a big deal, but making that height work in college usually means being clever with your game. That means… finding ways to create scoring space so your shot isn’t blocked. McBride has good athleticism so he has the necessary tools to do it but he will have to learn how to make a contribution against bigger, stronger, faster players. Time will tell, and I have hope for him!

  • Is KU back? Not yet, the current roster is decent, but lacks quality depth. Dotson and DeSousa are unknowns at this point and without Dotson, KU’s back court is in serious trouble even though I think Garrett could run point just fine. With DeSousa eligible, KU can run a big line up with Doke and SDS starting and Dava and Mitch backing them up.

I just don’t see any of the current freshman having a big impact this upcoming season.

Until these question marks are answered, I can’t say KU is back yet.

  • @Texas-Hawk-10

Granted, Silvio and Doke together would be awesome… but what I dream about with Silvio is having him at the 5 on a speedy lineup!

You know me by now… x-axis ball!

  • @drgnslayr He reminds me of Devonte just a little bit shorter.

  • @BShark

I think he will need to speed up his shot release a bit. Those small tweaks take away valuable shot %s with most players. Hopefully… he will make adjustments. His shot release point could be extended higher, too.

Another way to deal with it is to focus on court awareness, timing and spacing.

I’ve always been amazed at how much change is necessary for most players coming out of high school… skipping up to such a higher level of play. Really tough.

Then there is the size of the crowd, the expectation levels, the speed of the game (motoring up)… being away from family… having to make grades… being “coached” much harder…

  • Well after today I’d say no.

  • Back to wondering if we will sign another recruit ever again.

THIS year has been one Big time Screw over for sure

  • Just need a big bounceback in 2020 now that the trial crap is done.

  • Unfortunately, until we know the fallout, this is not done. The specter of sanctions is certainly a recruiting issue. A big draw coming to KU is knowing you’d play in the NCAA tourney and have a great chance at advancing every year. This uncertainty could extend perhaps through the fall signing period.

I still think Self should have approached his press conference much differently after the first trial.

@Jayballer54 When I see some suggestion that we got screwed, we did create our own mess.

  • BShark said:

that’s for sure bud. - - Now the only thing I worry about is what these clowns may try to do for punishment - I think the NCAA wants to make us a whipping dog - makes them look tough - so they think - -man I hope some how we can get something working for us with Kyree. - - ROCK CHALK ALL DAY LONG BABY

  • I think Louisville, NC State, and obviously Arizona will get the hammer. KU probably not much.

Should be able to wriggle around. At the end of the day there just isn’t much.

I don’t think KU will got much of anything.

  • I’m thinking we will be back on this thread soon with some good news!

  • Tristan Enaruna was good news!

  • The backcourt still needs one more guy, unless Agbaji is making a BIG TIME leap as a sophomore. We saw flashes of that potential, but we need that all season, not just a handful of games. Either that, or we will be leaning on Braun and McBride a lot more than most are going to be comfortable with next season.

  • Sounds like Ochai’s shins played into his downward spiral.

That and probably drinking his own kool-aid.

God I hope so! He was horrid late after being so good early.

  • @dylans if I remember right, he took that pad off?

  • Hahhaheeee… I thought it might be time to bring back this thread.

Even without the next scholarship taken, I’m feeling pretty solid with this bunch.

It feels like we cut out all the “dead wood” and have a completely fresh group of guys who will bring their own energy, making this team something special. Something real special!

Add in the guys who were part of last year’s loss of the streak, and there will be a lot of determination and focus this year.

My only real question: Whose team will this be? Will we have one guy step up to “ride the bull?” Or will it be “leadership by the numbers?”

I know I hope Devon will lead it or be a huge part of that leadership.

  • Not gonna lie, I really like the cut of this team’s jib

  • Now it’s official… we’re back! Welcome Jalen!

  • Are we all happy or not?

Yes, we missed on several OAD targets. But we landed a core of quality players that should stick around for a while. And let’s hope the drama is gone.

I’m excited to see these guys develop!

  • Honestly it’s a better team than we had last year. Dotson > Dotson. Moss > Grimes. Ochai > Vick. Silvio < Dedric. Doke = Doke. And the bench is better. Garrett should be better since he won’t have to do as much. McCormack is a beast for a 3rd big. Wilson lets us play small. And I like McBride a lot more than Chuck.

  • I think the 2020-21 squad will look really good. I just don’t know how the 2019-20 group will look. We will be hoping for breakouts from several guys, or guys playing above their history or pedigree to be an Elite Eight/Final Four type of team. But I think this is a Sweet Sixteen type team that could run to the Elite Eight with the right matchups. KU should win the conference (possibly by a comfortable margin). So in that respect we are back, but this is not a national championship or bust type of team, and probably won’t be a one seed.

  • Update: we back folks, FF or bust as per usual

  • @BShark i like it that he has a quick release on hos shots. He seems to be able to pop a 3 off dribble quite easily.

  • @justanotherfan It will be interesting to see which squad is better but my money is heavily on the 2019-20 squad being better. If our line up is Dotson, Moss, Ochai, SDS and Doke, there is a chance we lose all 5 starters to graduation and the NBA draft. Then we could lose Mitch too, if he dont redshirt. I’d bet at least 4 of the 6 mentioned are gone and replacing that many starters and improving seems unlikely.

  • @FarmerJayhawk

Just consider Big Mac. Think of how he started last year and how he ended last year. The gains were huge, and he should even start this year better than he left it last year because of all the banging with Doke and Silvio between now and the season.

Part of why I think the 2020-21 group will be better is that of the group you listed above, only Dotson and Ochai are likely to be true difference makers.

Doke is very good, but we know his strengths and flaws at this point. He’s going to average 13 and 7 if he stays healthy, but he’s not a 20 and 10 or 20 and 12 guy.

Moss, same thing. He’s a good player, but we know what we are going to get - likely 10-14 points per game, with some good three point shooting. He’s not going to show up and average 17 for us all of a sudden.

SDS is a bit of an unknown, but I don’t think he will morph into some sort of superstar. I think he will be a more refined energy player. I see him averaging something like 8 and 8.

Dotson could take a big leap if his shooting is progressing. Otherwise, I would imagine he’s more efficient than last year, but not necessarily a bigger threat without adding some shooting.

Ochai, somewhat similar. He flashed some big time potential, but wasn’t consistent throughout the season with that. He should be a very solid starter, but I don’t know if he’s All American (or even All Conference first team) level.

The 2020-21 group should have more shooting, which is an area that next year’s team is at least thin in, potentially lacking outside of Moss. While Doke is a great player, you almost have to play him with additional rebounders/rim protectors because he’s not as good at those things as his size suggests he should be. That tends to clog the floor. The 2021 team should be able to space the floor better and get even more efficient offensively, whether Dotson returns or not.

  • @justanotherfan if Silvio and Och are back the 20-21 squad will be so damn good.

  • Expect Wilson and Enaruna to make pretty big SO jumps as well. Both can be special players on both ends.

  • BShark said:

Question @BShark you don’t seem all that interested in Braun. What is it that you don’t like about him? I, personally, see a bigtime prospect. Granted, will he star this year? Probably not. But by his junior year I see a very versatile, positionless player who’ll be able to score from anywhere (underrated as an athlete).
